I emailed from the website stating service needed and provided my address. 301 Nansemond St. SE Leesburg, VA 20175 Owner responded that they do not work in DC. I emailed that my address is in Leesburg, Virginia but did not receive an acknowledgement. It may be that there was confusion during the end of year. I would not rule them out if there was additional correspondence, on site inspection and written estimate.

Easy to work with. Good price. Quality of work is very good. They could have been a little more careful with preventing concrete dust that propelled into a connecting space when cutting concrete block. But overall I think they did a good job.

Just be sure to tell the crew not to leave their equipment on the lawn or in planting. Once I made this clear, they took care of it right away.
Description of Work: They removed damaged hand rail and busted concrete steps, smoothed out the uneven surface that remained, and installed a beautiful brick set of steps alongside our driveway. Their work was outstanding, done quickly and they cleaned up after themselves very well. Additionally, we'd just had a new driveway installed and they were very careful not to damage it. A very professional crew did the work.

They were excellent, they were incredible. They went above and beyond. At first I wanted a weave pattern and they told me that they did not think it would look right so they suggested a herringbone, which costs a lot more. So I agreed and they ended up not charging me extra for it. When there was another glitch, they would make suggestions again about appearance and things. They took pain-staking work about where every brick was placed. They used piping bags to put cement in between each brick. They were very meticulous. They also had to deal with our land which is on a hill and not flat so they had to deal with different angles. They suggested added a step to balance everything out. They knew what they were doing. I would definitely recommend them to others.
Description of Work: Mottern Masonry Design did some masonry work for us. They took up the existing brick walkway and installed a new brick walkway with steel re-bars.

The two guys who came by to do an estimate seemed only interested in getting some routine maintenance work to do in the following couple of days. They tried the old, "X number of dollars, but if we can do it tomorrow we'll cut it by 20%." They never did give me an actual estimate for over $20,000 of serious retaining wall rebuilding that I ended up having done by another company.
Description of Work: No service was performed because I never got a real estimate.

Response from Mottern Masonry Design
This is not accurate. I myself the owner Jeff Mottern did provide this customer with exact price for rear retaining wall. Not only where we on time we also let this gentleman know that the wall would stand the way it was for years to come if he did not want to spend the money to fix it roght now. He may have us confused with another firm as we never wanted to repair wall as it was not repairable and let him know a total rebuild was needed. My company has close to abput 100 reviews and are all As and stive to be the best in the industry which is reflected here on Angies List. We always provide exact quotes if requested because we always would love the chance to have the work. We are extremely honest and would hope that all pur customers reviews would reflect that. Masoned 2 inch thick chocolate grey stone over brick fireplace...entire wall. These guys did a great job. timely, responsive and very professional. Jeff Mottern, owner, was great...responsive, professional, to-the-point and friendly. The crew was timely and professional. Salvador, the lead Mason, did the best job possible. Results were just as we imagined, which does not happen that often. They even allowed me to frame out the surround which allowed them to mason over that structure to add a "built-out" look. Turned out great. Very pleased.

We called Mottern Masonry after starting and cancelling the repairs with another contractor due to lack of progress and excessive time. The owner met with me within a couple of days to review the problem and provide an estimate. He provided options for both basic repair of the problem areas (which included a significant portion of the top landing and the step) as well as replacement of the complete top stoop and step. He laid out the pros and cons of both approaches (including price, aesthetics, and how long the repair would last). He also quickly identified the mortar color used on the house and indicated he could match it. With regard to brick color, he was very clear that he could match the brick color, except that the current brick-line that matches did not include some of the 'red-orange' bricks that our house has. We choose the replacement option because we plan to stay in the house for a long time, the aesthetics were important to us, and the cost difference was not that significant. Once we agreed to the contract, the owner laid out the schedule, which included doing the main work three days later and then coming back 3-5 days afterwards (depending on the weather) to do final chemical/power wash clean-up. The team showed on time, completed the job as expected, and left the work area in good condition. As promised, they came back several days later to do the cleanup. The only hiccup that we had was that after the power wash some of the mortar on the lower landing that originally appeared to be in good shape had crumbled due to the pressure. I called the owner and pointed this out. His team was back again within a couple of days to repair the areas, and again came back several days for the final cleanup. This was done as part of the original contract (there was no consideration for any additional cost). Overall, Mottern did a fantastic job from both craftsmanship and matching our existing bricks and mortar. They were very clear on the schedule, and worked exactly to the schedule identified. They were professional and left the work site in good condition when the job was complete. When there was one minor issue with the final product, they resolved the issue completely and quickly. Based upon this experience, I highly recommend them and will use them again for future masonry work.
Description of Work: We have a front stoop with a landing, a step, and a lower landing. Much of the mortar between the bricks had pulled away and deteriorated. Many of the bricks had either chips or chunks missing, and were loose. We went with the option to completely replace the top landing, replace the step, replace a small section of the bottom landing, and remortar and clean the bricks on the bottom landing that could be salvaged.

I was having a leak coming into my home right in the dining table and they came out to give me an estimate the next day after I called. I was very lucky as they had a cancelation and would be able to do the complete job the next day if I agreed. Of course I did because I was having water drip down on to my dining table. I happily agreeed for them to do the work next day and if I agreed they would give me a $600 price reduction. I really lucked out. they came out early in the morning and tore down the old chiminy, put up a brand new one, with a new cap. It looks so great, and no leaks. Of course it rained the day after they finished and I had no leak. Brick looks great the they finished by early afternoon and took away all the old brick. Wow what a wonderful company.

I called Mottern and Jeff came to my house the next day to give me some ideas and an estimate. The crew came the next week and worked for four days. They were careful not to disturb the existing shrubs around the walkway and stairs, and did a good job cleaning up the job site. The stones are very attractive and have interesting patterns and colors. My only complaint is that outward facing edge of one of the stone steps has numbers and letters written in red and black ink marker. Apparently one of the workmen was in a hurry and did not carefully inspect the stone he was using. I did not notice this flaw until the crew had left. Jeff's assistant came out and looked at the stone and said someone would come by to remove the marks. I guess someone came by because the red and black marks are not as visible now but they are still there. No one has ever called me to ask if the stone was cleaned to my satisfaction and I have not had the time to pursue this issue.
Description of Work: The original front walkway from my driveway to the front door was concrete but a previous owner had applied brick over the concrete. Mottern removed the bricks from the walkway, stairs and stoop, and installed rectangular bluestone in a random pattern over the existing concrete.

Our HOA Board of Directors determined that the capstones on a wall surrounding our neighborhood entrance sign were coming loose and water was seaping down to the masonry below. We had several vendors come and look at the wall, tell us what they would do to fix the problem, and give us an estimate for repair. Of all the vendors, we were most impressed with the knowledge, recommendations, and cost estimate provided by Mottern Masonry. Once the Board approved proceeding with Mottern Masonry, they came out and did repairs on the day and time previously agreed to. The workmen removed and re-set all the capstones, many more than we had anticipated, working very efficiently. The final product looked good and all work was done to our satisfaction. Jeff Mottern answered some follow-up questions and provided advice about whether water-proofing was needed.

The brick wall on the side of my home had cracks and holes. I had water leaking into the home, it was really bad during the storm Sandy. I studied the reviews for Masons, and contacted Mottern Masonry Design. They responded quickly and arranged for Jeff the owner of the company, to come out the next day. Jeff was punctual and very professional. He pinpointed the problem areas. He was very observant, he saw some damp areas on the brick. Jeff arranged for his men to do the work in a few days and he even called the day before the scheduled repairs to confirm the appointment. His men were very polite and professional. Their work was seamless. You cannot tell where the brick wall was repaired. They matched the mortar perfectly to the old one. They also pressure washed a front brick walkway that had mold and mildew. The pressure washed area looks brand new. I had a great experience with this company. Jeff the owner, is such a decent honest man. Thank you so much for doing a great job.
Description of Work: The brick wall on one side of my home was repaired. The masons magically fixed the holes in the mortar and the cracks, the wall looks like new. While there was no need for me to hire Mottern Masonry, I greatly appreciate the owner's professionalism, honesty and integrity. Jeff was most generous with his knowledge, explaining the problems to me in detail and suggesting what trades I should contact for resolution and what things to point out. It is obvious that the company values its customers. I wouldn't hesitate to hire them in the future.
Description of Work: After experiencing interior water damage in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, I contacted Mottern Masonry for an estimate for masonry repair to my townhouse. The owner responded quickly to my call and scheduled a visit that was convenient to my schedule. He took the time to check out a number of potential water entry points and confirm that the masonry was not the cause of the problem but rather sections of flashing where the caulking was failing and areas along the foundation where erosion had occurred.

The service was not provided (see above).
Description of Work: Our brick steps leading up to the front door had developed some cracks in the mortar as well a section of the brick wall enclosing our patio. After researching Angie's List, I contacted Mottern Masonry Design to get a 2nd quote on the work to be done. Jeff & his foreman came to the house, they had given me a morning time frame but when they were running late, they called to advise me of this which I appreciated. Upon seeing the cracks that concerned me, Jeff told me that these were cosmetic, not structural and that I could regrout these cracks myself by obtaining a tube of grout from a hardware store. He would be happy to do the job himself, but that his company had a $ minimum and that the work that we needed was not equal to the minimum. I very much appreciated his honesty (the 1st company gave me a written quote, never idicating that the issue was cosmetic) & indeed,I did go out & purchase the grout, fitted it into our grout gun & did the repairs myself. I would certainly return to Mottern Masonry for any future brick work that needs to be done.

The owner performed the estimate and was able to give me an idea right away when the job could be performed. He sent a crew of 2 who worked diligently for most of the day. The only thing was that more bricks needed to be replaced than antipated.since they ran out of bricks, they used bricks they found in my back yard. I wish they would have asked first before taking about a dozen of them. These bricks were just leftovers from a patio installation in the past so that a big deal, but it would have been better if they had asked first. All in all, the walkway looks awesome...a job well done. Their price was reasonable also. I would use them again.
Description of Work: Removed a section of the walkway that has settled and relaid a new 4-5 inch concrete slab, which was tied into stoop with rebar. He also included in his service to power wash the entire walkway to give it a uniform and fresh look.

I contacted three companies that were recommended on Angie's List. The first company sent a representative to view the property and while clearly professional and experienced, provided an estimate for the work that was much lower than what we had been expecting. Mottern was the second company contacted. The third company set up an appointment but didn't show up; when I called, they said that they had an emergency at another job, which is why they couldn't make it. (Since I had seen this same excuse noted in a company review on Angie's List - I can't be sure if it was the same company - I didn't pursue them further). Moreover, I had already pretty much decided to go with Mottern Masonry. The owner, Jeff Mottern, came and reviewed the property and discussed what needed to be done, and provided an estimate before leaving. Although his estimate was not the lowest we'd received, or the lowest we probably could have gotten if we'd interviewed more companies, it was about what we had expected for the driveway alone, and I felt confident in his experience and professionalism. He stuck to the terms and amount of the contract, even when his crew discovered things like the thicker-than-expected portions of the driveway and steel reinforcements that were twice the norm. We have had problems getting up to our front door, as the first step was much higher than normal; this made it especially difficult for our elderly mothers. When I discussed the problem with Jeff, he advised against completely tearing down and rebuilding the front steps, as he said they were solidly constructed. In fact, he was the one that came up with the idea of rebuilding the red brick walkway into a ramp, which has made the first step much easier to navigate and looks great. He and his crew were extremely professional, courteous, and always on time. He called ahead of time to let me know when he was going to be late for our first appointment or when rain would delay the project. We are very pleased with the finished product and would definitely turn to them again for any future concrete work.
Description of Work: Mottern Masonry replaced our concrete driveway, which is about 65 feet by 8 feet, rebuilt side steps, and renovated our front steps. The driveway replacement involved jack hammering up and hauling away concrete that was anywhere from the normal 5-7 inches thick to about a foot thick. It had been reinforced with not only steel rebar (which I understand is the norm), but also steel lathe mesh. They installed new rebar and poured a new concrete driveway. The job involved taking down a large steel basketball pole that was imbedded in the concrete, as well as snaking out and enlarging a drain located in the upper left-hand corner of the driveway. Although the original intent was to work around the extant brick side steps, because the steps were on top of the old concrete, they had to be torn down and replaced with new concrete steps; also torn down were two decorative brick walls. The concrete front steps were resurfaced and a portion of the red brick walkway leading up to the steps was rebuilt to form a ramp leading up to the first step, which was very high. At no additional charge, Mottern also power-washed the red brick walkway.

The chimney had deteriorated in our 36 year old home. We called three companies for an estimate. Jeff called back the same day and provided us with an estimate the very same day. We were not home when he came and he left his estimate at our door. Jeff called back the next day to ask if we had reviewed his estimate and to reiterate that he could finish the job on that Friday for a reduced price if we chose to move forward. We had not yet heard from the other two companies we called but wanted other estimates. It was obvious that Jeff wanted the job as he called back the next day. We were quite honest with him, relaying our concern about not getting other estimates as we had no means of comparison between his price and other companies. We were impressed with his response that his prices were in the moderate range but that we could rely on him to make sure the job was done right. He asserted that another company (widely used in the area) might offer us a lower price but that he could guarantee that his work was of higher quality. After several conversations with Jeff and a belief in his sincerity (along with the fact that no other company had called us back and we wanted the work done as soon as possible) we decided to move forward with Jeff. We agreed on the discounted price as we were willing to schedule for that Friday. Although Jeff wanted his workers to arrive at 7:00 a.m., he was willing to move them to 10:00 when he understood how strongly we felt about not getting up early in the morning. Jeff and two other men arrived right on time. We had previously discussed the possibility of some grout being replaced in our walkway but Jeff was originally uncertain that he could find a better match. When he arrived on that day, not only was he more confident that he could match the older grout, he agreed to do this part of the job for free. The two men worked diligently and completed the job in about five hours. They were extremely pleasant individuals who took obvious pride in their work. They did a a very good job on the chimney and a great job on the walkway. They told us they would be back the following Monday to wash off the grout and new brick work. Over the weekend, with more time to look at the work, it was discovered that a couple of areas required some caulk and a piece of gutter guard was knocked out of place. Upon their return on Monday, the men were more than willing to handle the couple of minor issues and did an excellent job cleaning up. Jeff did not ask for payment and we actually had to call him to find out how he wanted to handle getting our check. The check was put in the mail and we have the peace of mind we wanted before winter.
Description of Work: The top course of brick was replaced and a new cement chimney crown was installed. Grout was replaced in several places. Several areas of our walkway where the grout did not match was replaced with a color that did match existing grout.

They came out and provided an estimate. Asked that I rate them on Angie's list, which I promptly forgot to do. Until I was promoted by your most recent e-message. Asked me to decide on short notice and provided a discount if I did so. Also, advise that many of my slate pieces were custom and that if they had to be replaced it would be a bit more expensive. Advised me on the cost for replacement price for non-custom pieces. I decided to keep the crew working. After the job was completed someone came out to inspect the work and answered a few questions I had. I am satisfied with the work in the front and the back. This is the second time I have replaced the walk way in the 15 years I've lived in this house.
Description of Work: Replaced the masonry in the front walk-way, Reset the slate in the back. It took two days, they were here early and worked a full day in the heat. the grout in between the slate pieces was broken and weeds were growing in between the pieces.
