Excellent from the initial estimate through job completion. Company representatives proved to be knowledgeable, punctual, pleasant and very responsive to customizing the stair design to accommodate special needs. The workers did a nice job and took initiative to suggest options to fine tune the design. The overall results exceeded expectations and demonstrated an interest in being helpful. Although more pricey than some, I am glad I chose Mottern to meet my needs.
Description of Work: Removed and replaced old steps and sidewalks from front of house to street and to driveway and added short walkway to rear door, all in concrete. Removed resulting trash and cleaned up.

We had a problem where our concrete porch (37 years old) had settled and separated from the foundation leaving a few minor holes in the cylinder block. On June 6 th, 2013 I contacted Mottern Masonry Design by email after reviewing several prospective listings on Angieslist. We were in a small bind with our availability this summer due to other obligations. Jeff Mottern came by for an estimate on June 11 th. Jeff was very professional and to the point with the solutions and a price for our problem. I chose to replace the porch. Jeff offered a very fair price for the project including the repair of the foundation to be performed in a timely manner. They had a crew arrived onsite on the following week. They were very polite and to kept continually busy putting two full days in and getting the job done. We were minimally interrupted during the process. They returned to remove the forms a couple of days later. All in all we are very happy with their professionalism, timeliness everything was completed as discussed in Jeff's estimate, he also kept in touch throughout the project. The new porch looks great. I would happily use Mottern Masonry Design again in the future.

I wasn't quite ready to do and they have given me quotes on it, but I have got to just decide what I am going to do so that is why it has been hard to put out a comments on it because both companies were very nice and you know it is just that I don't know whether it is going to work out or not, it doesn't whether I can financially afford to do what the second company it needs to be done, but whether I can afford to do it is we have a problem and they gave me couple quotes and couple of options and I just haven't made up my mind yet at what I am going to do on that. They were very nice as far as working with them it has been easy, but it is just I haven't made up my mind yet. I would get a quote from them again in future if I end up not doing it now.
Description of Work: I called Mottern Masonry Design and they gave me a quotes end of May on exactly what I asked for, but then I talked to another company and they thought one of the things I asked about didn't really need to be done, which I had to agree when they pointed out the fact.

Jeff Mottern of Mottern Masonry was top-notch. We called Mottern Masonry after having problems with other providers even getting quotes. Jeff arrived for the appointment on time and competely described the work that needed to be done. His quote was very reasonable but most importantly he gave us the option to save some money if we allowed him to proceed with the project around their schedule the following week. He called us the day before the work was to be completed and the crew arrived as scheduled the following day. The work is fantastic and the two workers on the project were very experienced and pleasant to deal with. The steps and repaired brick watertable look great and their work made us realize what a poor job the landscaping contractor had done seven years ago when the patio and steps were installed. We fully anticipate using Mottern Masonry again when the need arises.
Description of Work: Rebuilt patio steps and restored brick watertable.

The ad for Mottern (the ad appearing on the Angie's List page) indicates that they serve Fauquier county. I live in Warrenton VA. This company called back and said I live 'outside' their service area. Warrenton is in the middle of Fauquier county. The ad on the Angie's list page is misleading. They do not, as far as I can tell, serve very much of Fauquier county -- perhaps Upperville -- if that. If they serve but a sliver of the county, why keep the ad listing as it is?

The entire project went very well. Jeff worked my project into the schedule quickly and arrived as planned. The cement stabilized the rock wall at the edge of my garden. Wish I had done it years ago. Both the patio and rock wall look fantastic. The project was a little more expensive than I expected, but the end product is well worth it. Was very pleased with Jeff Mottern. He is very responsive and helpful. His crew did an excellent job. Definitely recommend Mottern Masonry.
Description of Work: Mottern Masonry replaced the mortar between the flagstone pieces in my patio and set a rock wall in cement. They had to remove each piece of flagstone, clean it, reset it and install new mortar. The rock wall was rebuilt and additional rocks were added.

The existing porch pad was demolished and taken away and a new pad was put in. There was fill added and the area was re-graded with a second step added to make the height up to code. The surface was brushed so that rain, snow and ice are not a problem. It still looks great over a year later. We did have an issue that was addressed well. At the base of the right side, the concrete oozed out of the form and prevented the downspout from fitting back into the standing pipe that runs under ground and drains out to the street. It did take a couple of telephone calls and visits, but the problem was addressed to my satisfaction. I am pleased with the porch and imagine it will still be in great shape years from now! I would not hesitate to recommend Mottern Masonry for big jobs or smaller jobs like mine.

Jeff and Guy came to my home, listened to my needs, and provided a reasonable quote for the service I requested. They gave suggestions and improved on my original design with adjustments that didn't increase the price. I was impressed that they didn't try to sell me on more than I needed. The work crew came on schedule and removed my original concrete patio, as well as another structure in the yard with a concrete base. They laid out the patio design to my specifications, then poured and stamped the new 21' by 15' patio. The whole process took a quick three days. A week later (between rainy days) they came back for one more half day to seal the new patio and complete the stepping stone path. I'm very pleased with my new larger patio. The walkway and stepping stone path are just what I needed to get around the house. I would use this company again and highly recommend them.

Response was always prompt. Price was quite reasonable. Jeff and his crew were always on time and as planned. We were unfamiliar with stamped concrete and Jeff gave us references of other jobs in the area so we could see what the finished product looks like. When we couldn't decide about some detail or changed our mind the guys were great and truly had the "customer is always right" attitude. The result looks great, we've gotten lots of complments and we would use them again in a heartbeat.

We selected Jeff Mottern and his masonry company out of multiple providers because of the quality of his work, his very-fair price point, and the clear pride that he and his team take in the company's work. To find a good stone masonry company, I relied on Angie's List to see what other customers recommended. I can say that the "A" rating that Mottern Masonry has on Angie's List is well-earned. Jeff is a perfectionist, which is a great quality to have in a contractor relationship. He is constantly in contact, getting back to you quickly about any questions you may have. He knows stone inside and out, and was able to immediately suggest a stone mix that perfectly matched the stone on the existing home. He also is on-site at multiple times throughout the project to ensure that his experienced crew stays on track. From the laying of the cinder block foundation, to the cutting of the stone, to the beautiful placement piece by piece throughout the walls, to the final site clean-up, Jeff's crew was wonderful. They are expert stone masons, and have been with Jeff for many years. The teamwork shows as we had no issues related to quality or timeline for completion. Everyone who has seen the finished product over the last two weeks has been blown away by the quality of the workmanship and the beauty of the walls. They have added immensely to the value of our home, and we can't wait to put in the trees, shrubs, and other plantings we've waited for years to add to the front. We loved working with Jeff and his crew, and already have other projects lined up that we'll be using his company for in the future.

I think it will look better after the concrete dries. I am hoping the cracks he repaired on the side will look better after they dry. At the moment they look worse than when he started. I would like him to come out and check the work before I give him the check. He arrived at 7 am on the day he said he would. He gave the instructions to his employees and stayed for a bit to see how things went. His employee, Salvador, was very polite and professional and kept me informed of the status of the work.
Description of Work: I had Mottern Masonry come out and reparge the side of my patio as it was old and chipped/cracked, and repair some cracks in the cement covering the blocks on the side. He had to return after the weekend as the concrete developed a number of little cracks in it as it dried. Jeff didn't even flinch when I told him about the cracks. He said someone would be out to redo the work.

This project went very smoothly. I called the company, and an appointment to look at the work was made for two days from that time. Mr. Mottern arrived at the scheduled time, answered my questions, and provided a quote before leaving. The work was started the next week. The first day of work, the existing material was removed and the framing for the new stairway, walkway and landing was constructed. On the second day (Friday) the rebar was installed and the concrete was poured. The workers returned first thing Monday morning to remove the framing. The work area was left clean each day, and Mr. Mottern quickly returned my phone call when I had a question.
Description of Work: Mottern Masonry Design removed our front stairs, walkway, and landing, hauled all material to the dump, and poured new stairs, walkway and landing. 3500 fiber reinforced concrete with 1/2 inch steel rebar was used.

They did it in gray and we really like it. I have gotten a lot of compliments on it. He did a really good job. He took a lot of pictures when he came out. I do need to have him come back out, because it does not look like it sealed right. It really does look beautiful. The only problem that we had, they ran out of sealant and they were going to come after they got done with another job and it took them 2 or 3 days to come back. They had got tied up at the other job. The workmen were very nice and they were very proud of their work. I think that it was a good price, we were pleased, and I think in our heads we had a ballpark figure. The quality was good. In some spots, it is a dark grey and in other places it is a lighter grey and that is why I am wondering if the sealant is not right. When they said that they were going to start the job, they were here. He was very professional and the workers were very professional and they were really good at cleaning up. They did a very nice job.

Response from Mottern Masonry Design
We gave this customer an option to do thick cut stone patio and walks on 4 inch concret slab which they declined due to price.(About 3,000 more) We did tell them ahead of time that on crushed gravel is not as good but due to their budget they declided and did it on the crushed gravel. This method is a different look and also does not last. The other method of solid slab base will result in a much more appealing product and tried to explain this to them ahead of time so they knew exactly what they would be getting. So in this case only average expectations in their opinion wheret met, but was due to what they where willing to spend. I do let people know up front all the small details such as in this case so people can decide for themselves and sometimes when going the cheaper route this can be result. We want all of our clients to be happy and almost all of our review here on Angies List reflect that. I know personaly as a consumer I want good products as well and thats what here at Mottern Masonry we do. We will continue to strive for the best product. Jeff Mottern

It was an excellent job and completed in two days as promised.
Description of Work: The company telephoned me promptly and Jeff came out for an estimate the same day of call. His estimate for the job was at least $1,000.00 less and more compare to other estimates. He told me exactly when he could perform the work if I let him know within a day. I was two days later in calling, but he still came and completed the job within 4 days. The work: Rebuilding steps at the end of my concrete porch and rebuilding the brick and concrete base of a decorative lion on the driveway. The goal was to make the steps safe and attractive. Mottern put in 5 steps where there had been 4 and the distance between each step was now even. The materials are attractive and complimentary to the current structure. I have more extensive hardscaping to do in our front lawn next year. Jeff at Mottern will be the first person I call to do the job.

Fantastic - We are so glad we had Jeff (the owner) come out to give us an estimate. He called ahead to confirm, arrived on time, prepared with samples and photos, listened to our key needs and responded with a design that matched our requirements plus the details that someone with his experience can add. His lead mason is every bit as good as he said and blended the new brick with the existing well and the steps and walk just flow. When we had some comment mid project they figured out how to do what we asked for without a fuss and delivered the project right on time. They clean up each evening and left our home looking neat. We love our new sidewalk. Next time we need masonry we will only need to make one phone call - Mottern
Description of Work: They removed our old broken brick sidewalk and front steps, replaced it with a new concrete sub and new brick herringbone pattern walk and front steps. They provided great ideas and added perspective on the project to make it better than what we asked for. Their attention to detail and quality was great.

A very professional and experienced masonry team. The existing brick walkway on our 35-year home was in disrepair and did not give a good "first impression" to friends and family when visiting our home. After considerable research, I emailed Jeff Mottern who quickly responded and we scheduled an appointment for a design consultation and estimate. It was immediately obvious that Jeff routinely does brick and stone entryways, because he had a lot of ideas and offer a number of options. We ended up replacing the brick walkway with blue stone, and we also replaced rotted landscaping timbers with a stacked stone wall. Jeff's team completed the job in 5 days. It included removing old bricks from the existing walkway, removing old landscaping timbers (entire front of house), and removing two large and overgrown bushes against the front of the house. I expect most owners to be good with their customers, but what was so surprising was that Jeff's team was just as impressive. The foreman, Jose, walked me through the project at every step, including roughing out the design with paint, walking through the layout again once the concrete forms were in place (but before the concrete was poured), and then we also discussed the details such as the height of the wall as the project came together. Jeff, the owner, would stop by to inspect the worksite and reported back daily on progress (I was at work most days and was unable to supervise the work other than in the evening), although I worked most closely with Jose, the foreman, as the project was completed. Now that the project is complete, the front walkway and stone wall has completely transformed the overall look and quality of the house. My wife really loves it (always important) and I couldn't have imagined a better outcome. It looks great.

Jeff, the owner, showed up on time to do the estimate. He provided an estimate on the spot. The crew showed up on time and worked non-stop for about 7 hours. They dug out for the footings and had the cement poured that first day. They removed all the dirt. On the second day, they showed up on time and again worked for about 7 hours without stopping. They built out the new stoop with cinder block and added the new front step. They also put new stop on the face of the stoop and step. On the third day, the crew showed up on time and worked non-stop for another 7 hours and laid the blue stone on the stoop and front walk. They cleaned up the work sit before leaving. It was an excellent job.

I contacted Mottern and scheduled an appointment for Jeff Mottern, the owner, to come out a couple of days later to give me an estimate for the repairs I needed. Jeff arrived on time and took a look at the areas I knew were in need of repair, and also gave the rest of my house a good looking over, noting a few other helpful items. Jeff prepared the estimate - I received a small discount for scheduling the work to be done the next day. The estimate was in line with what I was expecting, and I was happy to have the work completed so quickly. Jeff and 2 associates arrived shortly after 7 am the next day to complete the repairs. They even waited until after 7:30 to begin the work so as not to disturb our neighbors too early. There was no need for me to stay home so I went to work and came home to see that the repairs looked great. The estimate Jeff gave me is exactly what I ended up paying. Very satisfied and will definitely call Mottern for future masonry needs.
Description of Work: I hired Mottern Masonry to do some repairs to cinder blocks on our back door stoop, our basement wall, and also a couple of small brick repairs on the front of our house. One of the walls of our back door stoop had deteriorated pretty significantly and a large hole had formed. A few other cinder blocks on our basement wall had more minor damage, but needed repair as well.

A fantastic and professional company. I called them on Presidents Day expecting to schedule an estimate within two weeks. To my surprise Jeff was there that afternoon, and offered to start work that week! Jeff helped with the design and made some fantastic suggestions for a sitting wall that we hadn't considered. His crew also added an extra step at our front entrance that really made the step down safer. The end product is spectacular!
Description of Work: We contracted with Mottern Masonry to demo our existing sidewalk and install a new one out of rock. We also requested a fire pit, and to resurface our existing stoop. At Mottern Masonry's suggestion we also added a rock sitting wall.

We received estimates from three companies to install a long walkway from our driveway to our front door. Jeff, the owner of Mottern Masonry, came to our house at the agreed upon time and gave us several different estimates for the walkway including installing brick, stamped concrete, or Pennsylvania thick-cut Bluestone. This was nice because it gave us a whole variety to choose from. Jeff was attentive and kind enough to answer other masonry questions during his visit. He gave us a great suggestion using river rocks in another part of the yard. We purchased the Pennsylvania Bluestone walkway on a 400 psi concrete base reinforced with ½ inch steel rebar. During the time period it was to be installed there were several days of inopportune weather and Jeff was prompt about notifying me when his workers could work. Jeff came by to check on the work while it was in progress, and even with the weather, the walkway was done promptly. The stones in the path are beautiful and look like quality stones. Based on the finished work, we decided to add on an additional portion of stonework to our stoop for an additional $1480. We hope to do a back patio with Mottern soon, too.
