Jeff and crew showed up when arranged to look at the porch and walkway I wanted redone. They listened to all my desires, offered some suggestions, and provided an on-the-spot estimate in writing. A couple weeks later after I'd sent in the deposit their crew arrived and dug up my walkway, and then poured a new one which they then covered with Virginia blue stone along with my porch. They regraded the property near the porch, and added a thick layer of large pebbles along the hose access area. They also gratuitously moved two plants that were in the way and could be replanted. Overall, a superb job at a reasonable price. Thanks guys.
Description of Work: Replaced and widened walkway, covered walkway and porch with Virginia bluestone, regraded property in the porch area, and laid pebbles down for the hose access area.

Our chimney was leaking and could not be fixed by copious amounts of caulk or the crown re-sealed. We had the chimney replaced from the eaves on up and faulty bricks below the eaves were replaced. I hadn't seen this particular job reviewed on Angie's List by this company. We took multiple bids. We chose Mottern Design based on talking to the owner, the price and the AL overall rating. The owner Jeff looked at the chimney and gave a very competitive fixed price quote for the work. He under-estimated the initial number of bricks his crew needed to replace, but he reassured us that the cost of the job would cover any extra bricks. At the start of the job, Jeff came by the first day to show me the brick he chose to best match the chimney, and came by the subsequent day to review his team's progress. His crew of four laid out tarp, put up the scaffolding, and tore out the brick the first day and re-built the chimney the second day. They came back the third day for a couple of hours to wash off the excess mortar. After the chimney had a chance to dry for a couple of days, they applied a water-proofing sealant. They also made an adjustment to the gutter to help the rainwater flow away from the chimney, and repointed the joints where previous caulk was evident. I also asked for and his team repointed some joints on our brick stoop and fireplace inside our home. The work site was thoroughly cleaned after the job was done. The chimney is fixed, I thought the crew did a really good job. I talked with the crew leader, and with Jeff (who came by everyday of the job). I felt the quality control was very high. They have very high detail orientation. They did a very good job of matching brick color, and a casual look at the chimney would not reveal the recent work. I would highly recommend Jeff Mottern and his company if you need somebody to do this type of work.

Jeff provided suggestions and details for all the work that was to be done. Jeff communicated with us frequently throughout the project so we knew exactly what to expect. His crew is very skilled, professional and punctual. This is the second project they have done for us. Both projects turned out beautifully. I highly recommend them to every one.

The owner Jeff came out himself to give us an estimate and spent a good hour with us going over our options. I didn't get any other estimates for the job since the company came recommended by family, but Jeff told us we were receiving a good discount based on fall rates and getting all of the work done at the same time. The crew headed up by George was always on time and respectful. They worked quickly and were able to get the demo and new foundation done on the same day and took two more days to complete the bluestone and smaller jobs. They came back to clean off the porch after the mortar dried and also moved the soil back up against the porch, which saved us some cleanup effort. The bluestone is beautiful and really increases the curb appeal of our home.
Description of Work: Took out existing concrete porch, poured new, wider foundation and reinforced with rebar, and installed bluestone on top of foundation. The crew also fixed some loose bricks on and around the chimney and removed a tree that was growing out of the chimney, as well as filled in concrete underneath some steps.

Jeff Mottern was very responsive to come out and give an estimate. He was very professional and helpful in coming up with a design that would be cost effective and keep my wife happy. After talking with about 5 other contractors Jeff was the most responsive and was priced competitively. When we signed the contract the guys came about a week later. About 6 guys came the first day for demo and they were very efficient. They built most of the forms on the first day while also saving a portion of the existing brick stoop. The next day they put in the 1/2 inch rebar and poured the concrete. A couple days later they came and removed all the forms when the concrete was harder.
Description of Work: Took out concrete steps, stoop top, concrete 5-12 inches thick. Concrete was reinforced with 1/2 inch commercial grade rebar and fibers. Steps coming down from stoop were widened to full width of the stoop. Lower landing was to have squared outer perimeter and steps leading down to the driveway was 5' wide.

This provider was charging $7,260 for a 16 x 14' patio that included tearing out of existing flagstone which had sunk, and replacing with new flagstone in a running pattern (similar to how subway tile is normally laid), bluestone and a 4" solid concrete underlayment. Pennsylvania "select" bluestone was an additional $580. This was WAY over the top in terms of cost, so we didn't choose this provider.

Jeff was great to work with in the pre-job phase where he made valuable suggestions about what I should and shouldn't do, something that saved me around $1000 in costs that I didn't need to spend. As we were negotiating the scope of the work he was flexible on things to help make me happy and I really appreciated this. As for the work, his team of two (Carlos and Pedro) showed up on-time, were very respectful, hard working and did an excellent job. I would ask for these guys by name in the future as I really got along with them, liked their work and would trust them to come back and do more work. To put it simply the quality of his team's work is undisputable. If I do further work I'll be giving Jeff a call even though he may not be he cheapest in the market, I'd rather pay a little bit more and get something I know I'll be happy with and have a low drama transaction. Simply put, working with Jeff was easy, I got what I expected for the price we agreed on the timeline we discussed. No issues, no problems.
Description of Work: The service provider removed and re-built a masonry wall, repaired damage brick on my home, pointed up brick on several areas large and small around my house. The service provide matched the texture of the existing brick so that once painted it would blend in with the existing structure.

We are very happy with the results of this project. We sought to extend and beautify our outdoor patio space. Mottern Masonry did a terrific job in helping us plan and execute the job. The bluestone is gorgeous and the craftsmanship of the crew led by George was top-notch. Among other things, they solved a slope problem we had been experiencing with our old patio. They provided an accurate estimate of how long the work would take (including rain delays), and they cleaned the work site extremely well upon completion. We have received many compliments on the work from neighbors and friends. We are very satisfied customers.
Description of Work: Installed 33' by 16' rectangular flagstone patio, using variegated Pennsylvania bluestone. Used existing smaller concrete patio as base, and extended area by adding 4-6 inch, 3500 PSI concrete slab using commercial grade rebar every 2-3 feet. Removed concrete steps that were no longer needed. Extended existing retained concrete steps and wrapped with weather face rock. Washed down.

I was initially in the market for a stamped concrete patio to replace my old brick patio that had buckled after recent years of brutal freeze and thaw winters. I wanted something more permanent and maintenance free. Jeff Mottern came by within a few days of my contacting him thru Angie's list. He worked up 2 options - the stamped 2 color tinted concrete I asked for, and the more expensive stone surface on top of concrete base. He explained that while the stone was more expensive it would be a lower maintenance product with no spalling and it doesn't need to be periodically sealed like stamped concrete. So while I hadn't previously considered the stone option, I opted for the stone. Work started the following Friday. Old patio removed, new patio framed, rebar installed, and 4-6" concrete base poured by mid afternoon Friday. Stone was delivered on Saturday. Monday and Tuesday the stone was set, and mortar work completed. After 5 days of curing the crew returned to clean the surface of mortar residue. They came back several times again that week to touch-up any areas that still showed some white residue from the mortar work. And Jeff offered to send them back again if I felt any additional cleaning becomes necessary. The finished product is beyond my imagination. In addition, my old patio had a French drain underneath that has stopped working. Jeff's crew dug a new French drain, cleaned out the debris blocking the old pipes and installed new gravel. Now the drainage is perfect. I couldn't be happier. I will mention though that concrete projects like this require some heavy duty equipment, so my side yard where they had to bring materials and equipment through to get to the worksite suffers some grass loss. They re-graded it a bit after the work was completed, but I'll still need to add some topsoil and reseed it. No big deal, though. I highly recommend Jeff. He and his crew are professional, courteous, and they bend over to make sure you get what you are paying for.

The sidewalk looks amazing! Really great craftsmanship and just like the picture I had sketched, only better, much better! The finished product was more that expected. We would definitely call Mottern Masonry again and highly recommend them to others. We decided to have a brick walkway put down to replace the old concrete sidewalk that was destroyed when the main sewer had to be replaced.. The new sidewalk is curved with a wider flare at the driveway for easier access. It completely opens up the entrance to the house and looks welcoming. In fact, just this evening, my grandson commented that the sidewalk was really "good looking" and even made the entire house look better. We have had that same reaction from other family members, neighbors and friends. During the planning stages, I decided to place a new lamp post with lantern beside the walk to provide additional lighting and style to the yard. The electrician left PVC pipe and wire to be placed under the concrete before it was poured. Mottern easily completed that task so the new lamp post placement should proceed smoothly. We also had pointing work done on the side of the house and a crack repaired. Much of this work was high on the building and required work on ladders. Special attention was given to match the mortar color as much as possible. I was glad to have it completed and looking good again. The final repairs were to large cracks in the carport concrete slab due to settling. It looks much better now that they are repaired.. We were very pleased with all the work which greatly improved the condition and look of our property.
Description of Work: We needed a new front sidewalk after sewer replacement, also repairs to the brick on the side of the house as well as large cracks repaired in the concrete slab of our carport. There were several steps involved with lots of planning. Jeff was always available through email to address concerns and changes. Everything was scheduled and timed beautifully when the work crews arrived to start the projects. They were very reliable from start to finish.

We had a great experience with Mottern Masonry. The product was great, and the service and communication were outstanding. After we contacted Mottern, Jeff set up an appointment with us to provide design options as well as estimates. Jeff provided several options for our patio. He also provided a recommendation on what he thought would be the best option. I like the fact that he is really passionate about what he does, and genuinely seemed to care about how everything was going to look (like an artist). He responded to our questions promptly, and provided frequent status updates on the project to keep us informed, even when we did not request updates.

The whole project from start to finish was very easy. Two people came to make the assessment and give a price. Several alternatives were offered and advice on each one was given. The project started and finished while I was on vacation which seemed like a recipe for disaster, but it went flawlessly. The wall was constructed, the mess was removed, and the crew left minimal impact on the yard. They even took the time to gently dig up some hostas that were in the way of the wall and placed them in the garden so I could replant them in another location at another time. As I mentioned I wasn't home to ask them to do this but they took the time to do it anyway. To me that speaks to the caring and professionalism of this company and its employees. My opinion on their price is simple - its NOVA and things cost more but I felt as though the price was reasonable and the quality appears to be outstanding.

Great job on the brickwork, but it was the cleanup that seriously hurt this job. First let me say the brickwork of Mottern is above reproach. The patio and walkway look great and the materials and people were quality. My complaint is with the managing of preventable things. When the cement truck arrived, he parked close to my fence pouring the cement over it into a wheelbarrow to take to my patio. During this process they splattered cement all over my stained wood fence. I noticed this the next day. Because the brick crew is not the clean up crew, this did not get addressed until completion of the job the next week. After some back and forth with Jeff Mottern about how it wasn't cleaning off and after the clean-up crew had to peel the stain from my fence to get the cement off, he agreed to take $350 off the price so I could have the fence repainted. Another legacy of the cement truck was the collection of oil stains left on my front driveway when it was pouring concrete for my walkway. Needless to say, as much as the crew tried to clean this up, oil doesn't come off of concrete. Additionally, the day after the crew had left, I was looking at my back patio and noticed cement was splattered on my brick wall, sliding glass door and adjoining woodwork. It took me hours to clean the (new) door of glass and vinyl and I gave up trying to clean the wall and woodwork and ended up repainting those items. Jeff was very responsive whenever I would call or text and this time was no exception, but even though he offered to have the cleanup crew return, I knew the cement wasn't coming off of the brick/wood and I had already fixed the mess. In summation, Mottern did a great job providing a handsome walkway. Unfortunately, the lack of care in prevention meant more work for me and left me questioning their professionalism. While I'm proud of the front walkway which I see every time I drive into my yard, that is offset when I see the mess of oil stains in my once pristine driveway.

We had an excellent experience. Jeff Mottern, the proprietor, was prompt, friendly, and had lots of good suggestions about how to do the work right and in a cost-affordable way. We had him in to get a quote within a week of my first calling him, and we scheduled the work within a month of signing the contract. He put 2 men on the job. They were very careful, they asked questions of us when issues came up that went beyond what Jeff and I had discussed, they worked hard and were very professional. Jeff came by once a day to make sure they stayed on task and that the work was satisfactory. We're very happy with the patio extension. It looks great, but Jeff's bricklayers also went above the call to make sure it drains well even though it's in a tricky part of our yard for drainage.

Jeff Mottern, the owner, give us an estimate after examining the site and giving us several suggestions regarding how the job could be done in a quality manner. We adopted all of his suggestions. For example, we wanted to enlarge an existing front cement entrance step by making it three feet wider and one foot longer. We thought the new cement would simply be added to the existing step but Jeff noted that it could separate in the future and he suggested we remove all of the old cement and pour a new, one piece cement step topped by flagstone with natural stone on the face of the risers. After we agreed to a price and a date, Jeff's two man crew (led by Salvador) arrived on time and worked very hard and carefully over several days to complete the job. They clearly took pride in their work and are excellent at their trade. The finished right on time and we are very pleased with the final product. Several of our neighbors and even other craftsmen who have come by to do other work on the house have remarked on how great the walkway and porch look. Even the back patio, a simple cement slab poured on a sloping piece of land came out exactly the way we wanted it. Mottern Masonry is not necessarily the least expensive among its competitors, but the quality is superb.

Jeff came out to meet with us and discuss the project. The crew did a great job and even redid another section of wall without charging us more than the bid. My husband passed away suddenly and I am moving across the country to be closer to my children. I need several repairs done before I put the house on the market. One repair is to fix the two brick steps in front of my home. Mottern wanted $1800 for two steps! I was surprised and after speaking with better informed people, I was told that it was a sign that they did not want my business. So, they made the price exorbitantly high. Whether this is true or not, it did seem way too expensive for only two steps. I would not recommend contacting this company again.

Response from Mottern Masonry Design
We here at Mottern Masonry contacted customer and informed her that we have a $1,500 dollar minimum plus the material cost. In this case to relay a few steps was $1,800. We have a $1,500 dollar minimum because most small repair repair jobs we do actually cost that much and is what it's actually worth. We do let all of customers know if it's not actually worth that and point them in another direction which many times is a handyman, We are extremely honest and fair and is not that we did not want the work. We do a few hundred small repairs every year. Many of our competitors have higher minimums of $5,000 and don't like to do small jobs which we do all the time.

Excellent job, workers showed up on time each day, professional in all respects. Jeff, the owner, figured out a design that we hadn't thought of and recommended a way of re-doing the porch that different from what we originally considered with another company and the entire job came together better than what we expected. So glad we went with Mottern and would recommend this company to anyone looking for stamped concrete work including other masonry jobs. First rate all the way.

Mr. Mottern was very prompt both with the appointment we made and the estimate for the job. We did not use his services because we decided to go with a different design. However, I am quite confident that his company would have done an excellent job in a timely fashion and would be happy to consider their services for future work.
Description of Work: Gave me an estimate to replace patio.
