Jeff Mottern had been here years ago to give me an estimate for this job but I was not ready to do the work. I called him back when I was ready and he came within a couple of weeks to do a new estimate for the same job. I asked him about covering over the old concrete steps and stoop with flagstone, my idea of saving money. He said that because the steps were in very bad shape (sinking, cracking) he would not do what I was suggesting. Instead he recommended fully replacing the steps for stability and looks. Jeff gave me an estimate (and recommendation) for going with stone or brick. Given the poor condition of what was existing, we decided to go ahead and fully replace. It is a very expensive job but I am glad we did it! The workers came on time, tried to be respectful of the plants in my garden (it's hard to demolish something concrete) which were very close to the steps. I don't believe what they built will sink anytime soon! They did a great job of cleaning up the debris and removing excess dirt. The workers were English speaking, which is a plus when working with contractors.

Contractor advised that the project would take three days of effort. It actually took 3 1/2 days overMemorial weekend. The work was completed professional and in accordance with our initial discussions. The workmen arrived promptly each day and completed project as proposed. We were pleased with the job.

We couldn't have asked for a better experience during our recent patio install. Jeff (owner) and his crew at Modern Masonry ("MM") worked with us and our budget to install a backyard patio that hit everything on our wish list. During the estimate process, we provided MM with various design and material options and they took the time to write up multiple estimates to help with our decision. The project commenced almost immediately as the materials we selected (stamped concrete) allowed for scheduling flexibility. MM estimated the job would take ~2 weeks from start to finish. Thankfully, the weather cooperated and they wrapped up in just under two weeks. MM's crew assigned to our project was extremely clean and courteous. They ensured that tools were packed up at night and trash was disposed of timely. You could tell from the pride they put into their work that everyone on the crew had extensive experience installing patios. Jeff (owner) mentioned that his crews have worked directly for him for many years which is an added benefit of using MM. The end result is a product that will get a lifetime of use from our family. We will certainly recommend Mottern Masonry to all of our friends and neighbors.

Mottern Masonry Design was hired after giving a quote to re-do my patio. The patio was outdated with old railroad ties and divided into 3 different levels. It was very unusable. He tore out all the flower beds, the railroad ties and made it into one level with a concrete base covered with brick. I can now use it for a sitting area with plenty of room for guests and gatherings. He was very prompt in getting the work done and very receptive to a change in the middle of the project. I would recommend Mottern Masonry Design for anyone wanting to do a hardscape project. Patsy P.

Jeff, the owner, showed up in person with an assistant to assess the job; he gave us a written estimate the same day. He also showed up on the 1st day of work to check in with his crew - who were very polite. The company is family-owned and local - which are pluses in our view. Between the estimate and the first work day, Jeff was very responsive to our emailed questions and concerns; he patiently put up with all our requests for custom touches to our new patio. The finished patio looks great!

Jeff's crew did a fantastic job. First, Jeff is a super nice guy. He walked around with me, talked about all the different options I had to repair the different things I wanted done, gave me ballpark figures to help with my decision, and then talked about how long different strategies would last (i.e. Repair only the bricks on my steps that are cracking, crumbling, vs. relaying the entire front porch). I signed a contract on a Friday and the crew began prep work the very next day. They were there a total of 3 or 4 days, and did a great job cleaning up afterwards. My steps look great and the repair work around the pool is equally well done. Mottern Masonry delivered exactly what they said they would. I recommend them highly to anyone needing Masonry work.

The job was completed in less than 30 days from initial request to work off of punch list. We are very pleased with all aspects of the job. The initial estimate was done quickly and professionally. We had a quote when then they left the property due to the use of some in the truck automation. Design alternatives were presented to address both design considerations and cost considerations. More than one quote was provided for our consideration. All questions were answered. The work was started just a few days after the initial deposit was made. The crew was professional, worked quietly and observed agreed working hours. The work site was returned to original clean condition at the end of the job. The number of working days to complete the project was estimated at the start and was met at completion of punch list work off. The final product exceeded our expectations. The variation of the stone colors is very appealing. The 2 inch stone is very attractive and the cement work was done with precision.

It was two weeks from estimate to completion. The owner and crew were prompt and polite. They were not the lowest price, but not the highest either. I felt most comfortable with their knowledge of the job that I wanted done. They listened to my ideas and executed them. Within three days the job was complete. The crew were some of the hardest workers I've seen. Their experience shows, the mason on sight really took pride in his work. Our patio is exactly as we wanted it and we could not be happier. I would and will use Mottern again.

I am more than happy to report on the work that Mottern Masonry Design did for me. In all respects this company is outstanding and was a joy to work with. To start with, the owner, Mr. Mottern, responded very quickly to my initial phone call. He then met with me personally at the job-site to go over what was to be done. We spent considerable time at this. Mr. Mottern was eager to hear my thoughts and ideas and quickly grasped what it was that I had in mind. In the course of this discussion he made a number of important design suggestions regarding the overall shape of the stoop and walkway, the type of pavers to use, and the their pattern, etc., that really made a difference. The result is a new front entrance to our home that is not only tasteful but truly elegant.. As for the work itself, I cannot say enough about the crew that did the job. Each member of the team was hard-working and conscientious. They arrived early in the morning and worked all day with hardly a break. The project took four days from start to finish and they "went at it" the same each day. The workers were friendly and easy to communicate with. Finally, their skill-level was impressive. Laying concrete and overlaying brick pavers in an intricate design pattern requires special expertise--and they have it! So, the fact that my new stoop and walkway look just great is due to the entire Mottern team. I should add that I received three estimates for the same work and Mr. Mottern's bid was, I thought, very reasonable. Finally, let me just say that the Mottern company is the best by far that I have ever worked with. I will not hesitate to call upon them again.

We couldn't be more pleased with the results. It looks gorgeous. Jeff, the owner, responded to my initial call within an hour and kept in contact during the entire process. This project took approximately 11 days from start to finish. It involved removing the existing 40+-year-old brick-over-concrete patio, crumbling concrete stairs, and stoop that the original builder had not reinforced (we discovered it was built on fill dirt!!). The crew consisted of 4 very prompt, considerate, friendly, and polite professionals.
Description of Work: Replaced back stoop, staircase, retaining wall, and the entire 25 x 25 back yard (a Georgetown patio style) of our brick townhouse with gorgeous bluestone for the patio and solid brick for the stoop, staircase, and retaining wall. Replaced a large, difficult-to-access, area in the existing back patio wall so that it is indistinguishable from the original.

We contacted Jeff of Mottern Masonry in early January to begin the discussion of building a 550 sq ft. stone patio off the back of our home with steps coming out from the house and one step down in to the yard. We wanted 4 wall sections and 2 pillars. We were looking to have chocolate grey stone walls and Pennsylvania irregular shaped flagstone for the floor. Of the 3 places we contacted, Mottern was the fastest to reply (within an hour via email). Jeff and Guy came out to our house within the same week that we initially emailed and discussed in detail the patio we wanted. Before they left, they provided us with a quote. Jeff's quote was the most reasonable of the 3 places we contacted and we felt confident in Mottern based on the other reviews that we read on Angie's list and other places. Jeff gave us an estimated start date of the 2nd week of Februrary and the crew, led by George, started that Tuesday. At the end of the first day, the thick slab of concrete had been poured. The crew showed up on time each day and worked diligently. I was always in contact with Jeff if I had questions or needed updates. Jeff was always extremely responsive. The crew kept the area clean and were very professional. We had some delays due to weather which was out of everyones control, but all was finished at the end of the March. We are very pleased with our new patio and we can't wait to enjoy a full spring, summer and fall on the patio. I would highly recommend Mottern Masonry for a patio or any stone work. They deserve their high reputation.

Jeff Mottern and his team are consummate professionals. Last summer, he and his crew transformed the aging concrete front steps and walkway of our house with bricks that held up beautifully over the winter, despite being covered with thick ice several times. Last week, they extended our existing backyard brick patio and also replaced crumbling steps leading to the back gate with brick. In addition, they replaced worn and broken railroad ties with stone. My wife and I decided that we wanted to have a raised stone wall around the area where we plant our garden to add visual interest and function - the wall could serve as a place to sit and to easily reach garden tools and grilling utensils. The wall is stunning. We assumed that it would be built from pre-cut, uniform pieces of stone. Instead, Jeff's craftsmen cut and shaped the stone pieces that make up the wall from large slabs of stone! This was true masonry. It was fascinating watching them work with hammer and chisel, create the wall from unique pieces of stone, and artfully apply mortar. Jeff and/or his team always showed up on time, worked long hours and were invariably courteous and professional. I had a few issues during the installation of the brick that replaced the steps. Jeff had these problems addressed and corrected very quickly and the result is a gorgeous backyard that my wife and I plan to show to friends and relatives with great pride. We can't wait to start planting to really show off Jeff's work. I have my own business and deal with vendors all the time. I have also hired my share of contractors for home improvement and maintenance. Jeff and his team stand above just about all of them in terms of professionalism, skills, meeting deadlines, and honesty and integrity..

How did it go? In one word: superbly! I had contacted the company via its website, and received a call within an hour. Jeff & Jay were at our house the following morning and had very helpful suggestions as to the design and materials which would best carry out our wishes to improve the curb appeal of our house. Both were ver professional and easy to work with. They were able to set a date for early the following week. Jay came out again and introduced the team of three men who proved to be very skilled and professional. The job was completed the following afternoon and the clean-up was excellent. We are extremely pleased with the result, and would highly recommend the company to anyone contemplating a new walkway, patio or other hardscape!
Description of Work: Covered the entire top of the front stoop and riser of stoop with thick slabs of variegated bluestone and the riser with rock. Covered the front walkway with the same bluestone and and set it in Portland Cement. Designed and implemented a solution to a problem we had with drainage from the existing sidewalk. Poured a concrete pad for a new lamp post.

We wanted a nice clean new look to our old and dated cement front porch and walkway. One that would blend in nicely with our style home and tie in color-wise with our blue front door, blue shutters and brick work. Jeff, the owner, recommended a flagstone that contained blue and grey with small traces of brown. Brilliant. The actual work was conducted over about a 3 day period and the team was always punctual, worked hard, and did a great job in both stone placement and cutting. The new porch is awesome. After the work was completed, the crew cleaned up the area and you would never know it was a active construction site a couple of days prior. Outstanding job.

Our backyard is a steep hill to a storm drain that was completely unusable. From the time of meeting with us for the initial estimate to the end of the project (nearly 2 months), Jeff was very responsive (emails usually responded to within minutes and never more than a day) and accommodating. For example, at the time they were building the patio, we had not yet made a decision of whether to install patio lights in the columns or strip lighting under the sitting walls. They installed PVC pipes through the columns in case we decided to install the lights later and offered to send a crew member back out to drill the holes in caps, if needed, Jeff was very clear and straightforward about what he thought would and would not work as well as being honest with us about what he thought was not worth spending extra money on and where we could cut costs. For example, we wanted stairs to the patio. Our ideal option was more money than we wanted to pay and we didn't like the appearance of some of the more economical options. Jeff worked with us to come up with a solution that was economical and that satisfied us. We were also easily able to communicate with the crew leader that was here at all times the crew was working. The crew often worked on Saturdays, especially if week days were lost due to the rain, snow or cold.
Description of Work: Built a large thermal bluestone patio (>2000 square feet) set on a concrete base with sitting wall (>50 feet) on a sloped and otherwise unusable backyard, columns at the end of our driveway and stairs down to the patio.

Jeff and his crew were prompt, timely, very hard working, and extremely efficient and professional. I am happy with the results. The only negatives were that one of the bluestone steps had an intergral unacceptable stain. Jeff replaced it free of charge. The risers have some not very pretty (but acceptable) markings. The parge on the walls have developed streaks which Jeff and his crew say is from acid that washes down from the bricks after the acid is used to clean residual mortar from the bricks. They say the streaks cannot be removed but should dissiapate in about a year.
Description of Work: Built a total of four 14" high walls totaling about 150 ft. long on rebar reenforced concrete footers. Walls were parged surface concrete block topped with brick. Installed three 3 1/2 ft. wide blue stone steps and risers and two (top and bottom) blue stone landings -- all lined with additional walls same as above. Additionally, parged -- similarly -- an old existing brick barbeque converted to a "planter" and lined the top edges with brick to match that of the walls; it now blends seamlessly with the new walls.

Jeff and his team are incredibly professional. Within a day of my calling, Jeff came out to look at the work that needed to be done, and within 48 hours I had an estimate. He was able to schedule the work within two weeks, and kept in touch via email about what was happening when -- the start date shifted somewhat due to weather. His team came out over Thanksgiving weekend to complete the work, and then came out on a Saturday to do the final chemical wash of the flagstone because I mentioned to Jeff that I was having an open house on Sunday. I just wanted to make sure that there was no issue with people walking on the flagstones, but he wanted to make sure everything looked great. It did! I used Mottern several years ago to rebuild the brick steps leading to the front door, you can bet I'll call them when I am ready to repair the driveway and when I get around to hardscaping the back gardens.

Jeff came out and gave a quote on the spot and gave us a very detailed explanation of the work they could do on the walkway. We were impressed with his design suggestion for the needs of a wheelchair that we had not even thought of ourselves. Jeff was very responsive to questions along the way. Their professionalism and workmanship is excellent!

Mottern transformed an asphalt parking area in my backyard into a lovely, high-quality patio area that I can now use for mutilple purposes--from basketball court to high-end patio for dining and relaxing. Their prices were in line with other cement contractors who didn't offer a stamped option, which is highly desirable. Further, they gave me a premium tint that they had an overage on, for free. I couldn't be happier with the outcome as well as the professionalism of this company!

They were tremendously responsive in returning emails and accommodating changes in our plan, such as switching from square cut to irregular stone for the firepit portion, and wanting to add a border to set around the firepit. Jeff suggested using pavers for the border instead of cut stone, which looked great and saved a lot of money. Everyone on the crew was polite and professional. We recommend without reservation.
Description of Work: Installed bluestone patio, approximately 29x14 with rounded fire pit area and seating wall.
