I had two damaged chimneys and collected a number of estimates from masonry companies and chimney specialists. Mottern impressed me with their honest assessment of the damage and potential repair approaches, as well as with their pricing. Once we agreed to use them, they were very quick in scheduling the work, and did a great job of cleaning up thoroughly every afternoon. Jeff called me part way through the job to let me know that they had discovered that there were more damaged bricks than they had anticipated. He said they were going to do the job properly, but they'd stick to the original price quotation even though the job was more labor/materials than planned. I wish all contractors were like this! I'm very glad that I went with Mottern, and plan to use them again for any masonry work I might have in the future. I highly recommend giving them a call.

I think they did a great job. The bricks look great and they finished the same day. They are middle of the road in cost, but excellent craftsmanship.

Mottern masonry did an outstanding job on replacing our sidewalks, front porch, and patio. Jeff answered all our questions and concerns, and made excellent recommendations. We chose the PA blue stone and it came out wonderful. The work was completed within the estimated timeline and the end result looks outstanding. This is a case where you would make the same decision again knowing the professional work that was done. Absolutely recommend

Business does not work in Warrenton or Marshall, VA - I called regarding the installation of two sets of brick stairs, brick walkways, kick wall and a rear patio but Guy responded that Mottern will not work in this part of Fauquier County. I can't blame them as the job was a big one and would likely be a fair amount of work and they may have too much work on their plate.

Contacted Mottern for an estimate to rebuild a "builder grade" brick walk (no foundation, brick on dirt - shoddy installation) with a proper concrete slab, and repair of a brick stoop with significant cracking and missing mortar. Mottern provided a quick and free estimate with several options. For the stoop, they cited "worst case" depending on what was found underneath so we could budget. Work was scheduled and completed within one week (weather permitting) and was of very high quality. Crew was courteous and performed excellent work. They used the extra mortar to repair several small areas on the brick facade without being asked. They also moved extra brick (the walk was shortened at my request) to the rear of the house and stacked neatly without being asked. Two small errors were found after installation, and Mottern was quick to say "no problem" and is already scheduled to be fixed. Small items like that are to be expected I think during post-work inspection - no harm, no foul.

Since the patio was primarily going to be underneath my deck, I was initially tempted to do a cheap patio to save money. Mottern Masonry Design is not the place to go if you're looking for the lowest bid but you get what you pay for. Given that we plan to live in this house for many years, I opted to spend a little more and get the best. In addition to the patio, they buried my downspouts to the edge of the property, redistributed the dirt in a low spot in my yard, and even seeded it before leaving. I could not be more pleased.
Description of Work: Mottern Masonry Design recently completed a large PA bluestone patio (just under 700 square feet) underneath my deck and I am beyond happy with the finished results. The thick cut stone was set on top of a reinforced concrete base and and then sealed with mortar to ensure it never shifts. From the initial estimate by Jeff, the owner, the work was completed within the estimated timeline and the end result looks phenomenal.

It went great. They color of the motor matches original, can't tell where they worked but brick side and stairs look good. My neighbor behind me had a point up job done at the same time by another mason and you can see the job - mortar is off color and ugly. I'm glad I used Mottern! The sidewall looks fresh and the stairs and front of the house look brand new. Staircase cracks fixed and joints all look solid. I would use them again for something else in the future and I'd recommend them to a friend.

The weather was very wet and rainy over the last week. Jeff's crew removed the old 40 year of bricks, prepared the site and poured four inches of cement as a base. He used rebar for extra support. Once the cement was dry his team installed a new brick pation with a border trim. His design was in keeping with the historic nature of the community and the final 13 x 13 foot patio fit perfectly into the look and feel of the townhome community. Since we did brick over a small area that was once garden, his team carefully replanted some bulbs hat were just sprouting to another part of the patio garden instead of discarding them. Several neighbors were so impressed with the results, they asked for Jeff's contact information.
Description of Work: Jeff Mottern of Mottern Masonry Design met us to propose a design for our patio at our town house in Old Town, Alexandria. While we had one idea in mind, he had other suggestions and a clearer vision of what would be a better design.

The workers started on time and spent all day completing the project. The workers knew what they were doing, were very polite and answered my questions. They even repaired one of the sidewall pavers which was not part of the project. The workers cleaned up everything after they were finished. We are very happy with the finished work and would consider Jeff for any work in the future.

Mottern Masonry removed our old pavers and overgrown gardens, poured concrete reinforced with rebar, and laid down varrigated bluestone. In addition, they buried our downspout and leveled the patio (our property is on a slight hill). From the time we called to the time we were grilling on our new patio, only two weeks had gone by. They also removed all trash and scrubbed the stone afterward. We're very happy with the result and the speed of service.

I was extremely pleased with Mottern's customer service, attention to detail, and prompt remedy to any requests I had regarding the work. I got an immediate estimate from Mottern's owner and was able to schedule the work right away at a reasonable cost (when other companies I got estimates from said the work could not be completed for several weeks). The installers arrived early on the day that the work was scheduled to begin and got to work right away. They answered any questions I had regarding the project and were professional and courteous. They removed and hauled away all old material and came back on the final day to clean up the entire area. The owner came by on the last day as well to ensure I was satisfied and to answer any more questions I may have had. I was very pleased when I asked that a couple of things be done regarding the stone (select more variation in colors and replace a scratched stone), I was accommodated at no additional cost. That is true customer service and I appreciate it. Thank you, Mottern Masonry Design!

Project started on time. Jeff discussed the job with me at the time of our first meeting and took great notes. He talked about his years of experience in masonry and concrete work, this led me to believe he would be the one actually doing the work and overseeing the project. When the work started I realized there was foreman who was the main person overseeing the work, not Jeff. The workers did a neat job and kept everything clean. After excavating they took all the dirt and old materials away from the property for disposal. They completed the concrete pour on the 2nd day and Jeff let me know via phone that I would see them come back to hose down the patio and then a couple days later they would come back to seal the concrete. Everything looked fine until the day when the patio was hosed down. The majority of the patio was a light grey color with the exception of a corner that was darker grey. I called Jeff to ask him why there was a difference in color and he told me that they had to get a 2nd truck of concrete and the concrete was wetter than the first batch which is why it looked "wetter" or darker. He told me several times that the area would cure and become lighter over time and asked me to wait 2-3months for the curing process to take place. I took a couple days to think it over in the mean time they came back to seal the patio. After the sealant was on, the darker area become a big eyesore for me and my wife. This was especially true after I was able to walk on the patio to take a closer look, the darker area looked like a different texture (more rough) than the remaining patio (which was much smoother). I was asking Jeff for more details of why and how this may have happened. Jeff did not like me questioning him and critiquing his work. He told me "you wouldn't tell a home builder how to build a house." I just wanted answers as to whether there was an issue mixing the colors or whether the 2nd batch of concrete came from another job's leftovers or anything that could make sense. I did not buy that the concrete was just "wetter." I am no expert (and I told him this) but I did not like being talked to like I was an idiot by Jeff. Instead of confirming my worries he laughed when I voiced my dissatisfaction. I told him that this laughter was becoming irritating and he literally told me - "if you don't like it you can go f**k yourself. I will come and take out the patio and you can have someone else do the work." He later did text me and said "I am sorry for yelling at you earlier." He also agreed to have his employee come back and seal the patio again with a darker stain to help blend the two different looking areas of the patio. After the staining, I am satisfied with the way it all looks. The texture difference is there but not as noticeable with the darker stain throughout the patio. In conclusion, I did not like how Jeff was unprofessional in his dealings with me and for this reason, above all else, I would not recommend his company to a friend or family member. UPDATE: A year later, my patio is sagging in a number of spots now and has dips that collect rain water which stays stagnant causing discoloration in those areas and not to mention the wet areas promote bugs! (See Current Pictures). I attribute this sagging and dips to a sub-par foundation under the concrete. I am no expert but I think if the foundation was done properly this wouldn't be the case. I am sure, Mottern will point this to something on the fine print of his contract. ***PLEASE READ CAREFULLY*** Maybe I have just had bad luck with this company as many on this site have good reviews, which was the reason I chose to go with Mottern too, but wishing now that I hadn't. I will have to spend more money now to get Flagstone installed because there is really no good way to correct stamped concrete unless you redo it altogether. From my prior review: 03/21/2016 Project started on time. Jeff discussed the job with me at the time of our first meeting and took great notes. Description of Work: Excavate backyard and built stamped patio. UPDATE: In March 2016, Mottern Masonry installed a stamped concrete patio for my townhome in VA. I am writing an update for my review from last year. Jeff told me that he has been in business for many years and learned the craft from his father who was in this business as well. I got quotes from a few other contractors who explained to me that they would excavate the lawn, then add a few inches of gravel, pack it in, and then pour concrete over that to ensure a lasting patio. Mottern assured me that it was unnecessary to do gravel on a house that has been around for a number of years and that gravel would be only necessary on new construction homes as the dirt is still settling. I believed him based on his years of experience and let him do the job by just pouring concrete on the dirt without a gravel base. I am now wishing that I had gone with my gut and chose another contractor who was willing to do the job correctly.

Response from Mottern Masonry Design
Stamped concrete is one of the most cost effective options we offer, but the first thing we tell our clients is that we can't offer any guarantee that there won't be variations in color and texture in the concrete. It is the nature of the material. This is actually a written clause in our contract, and in addition to it being printed into our contract, we also hand-wrote it into Mr. [Member Name Removed]'s contract so he would know exactly what to expect. When variations appeared in his concrete, however, he was quite surprised. We gave him an honest assessment of what to expect: when the concrete cured, the variations in color would begin to blend. We told him he would have the best result not staining the concrete. To assure him we were being honest, we told him that if the color variations did not blend the way we said, and he remained unsatisfied with the color of the concrete, we would guarantee in writing that we would return and stain his concrete free of charge (generally a $1700-$2000 charge) within a few months. His wife even told us that within just a few days, she had seen a substantial change in the darker area of the color and saw it lightening already. I sent Mr. [Member Name Removed] several photos of different jobs where the dark concrete had cured to a lighter color, and concrete that had variations in color had cured to a more even color. I showed several different examples to assure him that I know what I'm talking about and I am not being dishonest; however, he continued to say that he would not remit payment for his job. I answered this client's calls on weekends, even Sunday mornings and afternoons, responded immediately to every call and e-mail, and went above and beyond to assuage his concerns. We then agreed to stain the patio at that time because he didn't want to wait, as I suggested for the best result. When we showed up to stain the patio as we agreed, and before we did so, suddenly Mr. [Member Name Removed] called to complain that staining would no longer be sufficient because now he was upset about surface irregularities that he had not previously mentioned. I again referred him to the contract, stating that as it is the nature of concrete to have surface irregularities, especially stamped concrete, I couldn't guarantee against them. We had also already agreed that we would stain it and that this would be an amenable solution. We stained the concrete and came out with a beautiful result. I would like to attach photographs here, but the Review Response doesn't allow it.

We are very pleased with the entire process through the finished project. Jeff returned our calls quickly, work started on time and lasted within their estimates. All workers were respectful and cleaned up after each day. The work was even better than our expectations as well, quality materials were used and when an issue did arise, we were contacted immediately and able to find a solution with the workers guidance. Would recommend without hesitation!

I am the owner of a duplex townhouse and we agreed with my next-door neighbor to completely replace both our ugly concrete and plain driveways and walkways as well as to re-point our old front porch brick staircases at the same time. We are both renting our places so none of us live on site. It is important to note that the entire process had to be conducted by email and over the phone with occasional exchanges of photos. Despite this handicap things could not have gone smoother and been more pleasant. Mottern came in the Spring to do their assessment very shortly after my initial phone call. They sent us a very detailed estimate by email the same day and we discussed some details over the phone. They made some very good suggestions and convinced us to modify some of our initial ideas for better more suited options. The price was very reasonable for a job of that scale but we felt a little bit "short in cash" at that time. Mottern told us that if we could wait until the Winter/off season in December they would be able to shed some money off the quote. We agreed and re-contacted them at the end of November. We signed the contract and set the construction date for mid-December. When we contacted our tenants to alert them of what was coming, we found out that one of them was pregnant and due at the end of the month. She was extremely anxious and very hostile to the idea of having such a major construction in front her house so close to her due date. We explained the situation to Mottern and they handled the situation flawlessly with a lot of tact. They personally called her, explained the entire process and reassured her. In parallel, they negotiated with another client of them to switch dates so they could start the 1st week of December on our project. They estimated that it would take about 6-7 days (weather permitting of course) and after the first day of demolition it started to pour rain for 2 straight days. Nevertheless, they kept their promise and the job was done in exactly one week. The result is beautiful (we came by the house at the end of December to check their work personally) and all of our neighbors in the street gave us compliments. During the entire construction time, and without me asking, the manager would send me photos every day to show me their progress. At the end, they had to repair more spots on our brick stairs than what they had quoted us and they did not charge us a penny more (it was worth about an extra $1,100). They also put down rolls of sod in places where the grass had been damaged in the front lawn. I have used a lot of contractors in my life, but I think I can safely say that I had never encountered a company that is as professional and reliable as Mottern Masonry Design. They get the Contractor Golden Globe from me!

Although initially Mottern Masonry didn't come in with the lowest bid on our pool terrace project, we soon discovered that the other bids we were given were not nearly as comprehensive as Mottern. When we asked the other bidders to replicate what Mottern was doing (i.e. in cubic cement, actual brick and a parching project around the section of our home), they backed away and said there was "no way" they could do these things for Mottern's price of $10,500 (we were given the Winter rate even though that officially doesn't start until Dec/Jan.) We were told the project would be finished by the end of November and it was--with a few days to spare! The design suggested by Mottern was actually better than the one we had developed. The only issue we had was that the crew was a little messy but they managed to clean up fairly well afterwords. We're not docking any points for this because when you're dealing with tons of cement and brick its difficult not to make a mess. We've worked with many contractors over the years (we've remodeled five homes) and Mottern Masonry is at the top of the list in our Best Service category. We highly recommend them!

really good. Response to initial call and request for quote was very quick and extremely polite. Exchanged ideas and made suggestions - I needed a bit of time to make a decision about the materials - they were patient but made sure that I knew that they couldn't proceed until I had decided what material I wanted. Jeff arrived to review the new lay out - then introduced the team lead by Marlin - who would be working on the project - they arrived on time each day and worked steadily to complete what was needed - carefully cleaning up each day afterwards. Project was completed in the time planned. I had a question about the final invoice - Jeff called back in minutes to review and clarify the discrepancy - The final job is beautiful and the work executed very nicely. I am very happy with the work and the manner that the job was conducted - everyone involved was extremely professional.

Excellent workmanship, punctual, professional and team did an excellent, high quality job. This is my second project with Mottern. The first was a stone walkway in front of the house. Also excellent construction. looks great. Highly recommend for quality , price., professionalism and punctuality. Very flexible. Very adaptable to needs.

sIf you want a great job done by and excellent company you have to go no further than Mottern Masonry Design. Our old tired brick walkway was a mess and our front stoop had broken away from the front of the house. Jeff and Guy came out to give us an estimate for a stamped walkway and stoop. We had seen their work as they have done many jobs in the neighborhood. They provided excellent advice as to what was needed and provided a fair price. It turned out to be well worth the money. They said we would be scheduled for November and they were right on. We had ordered a stamped concrete walkway and stoop in a grey color so the stampings would look like a slate walk. They started promptly and finished promptly. We wanted the job finished by December 3 as we had a party planned. I called several times to be sure it was finished by then and they assured me it would be.Tthey sent the crew out on Thanksgiving day to complete the job way before our party date. I can't thank these guys and their crew enough for the cooperation and timeliness they displayed. The quality of the work is EXCELLENT. As I indicated they came highly recommended by neighbors and I wish to pass on that high recommendation. THIS FIRM IS GREAT!!!.

Mottern Masonry built a new patio with a firepit in place of a wooden deck, which they also removed. The first three words which come to mind to describe the finished product are WOW, Awesome, and Outstanding! I had a wooden deck which I wanted to change out secondary to the upkeep and the overall appearance of the deck. I received several estimates. Jeff Mottern contacted me the same day I had put in an online request. He came out for a consult several days later. Jeff is someone who you instantaneously like. He is very easy going but obviously very knowledgeable having done concrete and stone work prior to becoming an owner. He offered several suggestions, but was never pushy.. I had wanted a firepit with a sitting wall. He told me the added cost of the sitting wall and said that he would do whatever I wanted, but to keep the cost down, to start with the firepit with a circular area and that it would be easy to add the sitting wall later. He also offered some suggestions on how to add ambience to the patio which had nothing to do with his concrete/brick work. He asked if I could wait for the estimate and ended up giving me 3 estimates for 3 different designs to include stamped concrete and firepit with and without sitting wall. He explained the differences in cost and the pros and cons of each of the estimates. I knew I had found my contractor, but told him I would get back with him. The work was scheduled in about a week. The crew, along with Jeff, arrived at 7 am on the first day. Jeff reviewed the project with his crew foreman as well as with me to make sure we were all on the same page. The crew arrived promptly at 7 am every day and even came on Saturday! Some of there days were quite long (10 hours) but they ALWAYS had smiles on their faces. They were outstanding. It was obvious they were proud of their work and enjoyed it very much. They laughed a lot but were VERY hard workers. The craftsmanship of my firepit and the surrounding circular area of the firepit is nothing short of beautiful. The stones were individually cut to give a very cool/modern design. I had also asked to change something in the design and Jeff accommodated it immediately. The work took 6.5 days. After 3 days of letting everything set, the crew arrived a little after 7 am on a Saturday (again) and powerwashed it to let the beauty of the stones shine through. The patio has added a new dimension as well as a cool look to my back yard. The result is spectacular. I am 100% satisfied with Mottern Masonry overall. I am totally impressed with the owner and the crew. The work was thorough, fast, and top notch. Hire this company for your work. You will not be disappointed.

I'm not longwinded, so I will just say that the team that did the work was highly skilled and did an outstanding job. I give an A on price because while not necessarily cheap, you get what you pay for, and the quality of both the workmanship and the stone provided was very high. The price was thus very reasonable given the product delivered. You only need this done one time, so you might as well have it done right. I can recommend without reservation.

I used Jeff and his Mottern Masonry crew once before for some brick work and was so impressed with the quality of their workmanship that I never considered anyone else when I was finally ready to set my patio and landscape retaining wall. I spoke with Jeff in early Sept and asked if he could come out to give me an estimate and his professional opinion on my ideas. He scheduled me within a week and arrived on time and eager to hear what I was envisioning. We discussed the pros and cons of stamped concrete and flagstone, as well as various types of landscape wall materials. After about 30 minutes of brainstorming he wrote up two separate estimates for the patio and two more for the landscape wall - all within reason and my expectations given the respective materials. When asked, Jeff told me matter of factly that he thought the less expensive landscape wall option would look much better. I let Jeff know it would likely take some time to get back him since the HOA had to review and approve the design. He understood completely, commented that he did a lot of work in the neighborhood and didn't foresee any issues with any of the designs being considered, and offered to put the job on his calendar for the week I was expecting to hear back from the HOA, adding that we can always push it back if needed. As Jeff expected, the HOA approved both of the designs and work commenced on schedule two business days later when he showed up in the morning to ensure the trace lines were accurate. The entire project took only four days ? three for the patio and one for the landscape wall. Jeff and his crew were always professional and pleasant to work with, and they cleaned up the yard as if it were their own each evening. In just the first week after the project was completed three neighbors and an unrelated contractor all commented how terrific it looked and inquired about the company that did the job. Another neighbor commented that the crew was "great" and "very considerate". It?s pretty obvious Jeff's team are masters of their craft who enjoy what they do. Their patience and attention to detail are evident in their work, and I?m very pleased how everything turned out. So just go with Mottern Masonry, you won't regret it.
