Mottern Masonry Design

We did three projects with Mottern Masonry - a patio, a front walkway, and retaining walls. The work was very high quality, and so was the stone they provided. They communicate promptly, are very responsive to questions/concerns, clean up after themselves. Prices are better in the cold months; they were the lowest bid when we were taking bids. Highly recommend!

His crew was accommodating to our schedule (we are a preschool in a church building) and the project went exactly as promised. The new stairway and walkway are beautiful and just what we wanted. The price was very reasonable and we couldn't be happier!

We hired Mottern masonry to remove an old concrete patio and steps. They installed a new Pennsylvania variegated square cut blue stone patio, steps and retaining wall. It looks amazing! These guys are highly skilled and professional. Showed when they said they would and were at our house full time until it was done. They were very accommodating while working with us on the design and were very careful not to damage our lawn. We couldn’t be any happier with the process and the final result!

We had another company do the steps a few years ago, and they did a messy job and doubled their estimated price. Mottern was prompt, gave various options, and did a beautiful, professional job. Mottern did an excellent job helping us design and install a backyard pool deck and patio. Mottern was quick to provide an estimate, and had good ideas at the design phase that were both attractive and economical. The crew did the work quickly (despite weather delays) and did high-quality work. We opted for a stamped concrete patio, and it looks great. The project was challenging because of the pool and grading around the house, and Mottern provided good solutions to drainage and other related issues.

They just completed my driveway, walkway, and front stoop. It...looks...amazing!!!! Price wise they came in at the middle of 3, but they did more than we asked. They took one look at our front yard and offered to take the dirt from the brick flower beds we had removed and grade our front lawn to help keep water away from the house. Then they seeded and covered the dirt with hay to help beautify our home. For timing, they finished a couple days later than estimated, but they accommodated our schedule when we asked them to not work one Saturday since we were having our son’s birthday party and then there were 2 days of rain that stalled them so I can’t complain. Guy, Jose, and the crew were knowledgeable and pleasant. I can’t wait to have them back to fix my side walkway and downstairs fireplace.

From start to finish the project was grade A+. The quality of materials and craftsmanship were top class. Our walkway and front stoop look outstanding. The new look adds so much more value to the front of the house and yard. I definitely recommend the guys at Mottern Masonry Design. Thanks again!

From the estimate to the finished walk, the job Mottern did was excellent. The estimator gave a detailed description of exactly what the crew would do and how long it would take. And that is what they did within the time frame given. They removed the old concrete walk, squared and framed in the new walk, installed a beautiful new flagstone walk, and finished up by curing the newly laid flagstone for several days. They were the only contractor I talked to who talked about this curing step. They were timely, professional, careful, skilled, and courteous. I feel fortunate to have found them. All the work was done in February with a low-season discount.

Mottern did well, considering the weather. They had to delay a few times because of rain and snow but they finished in a reasonable amount of time.

It went very well. The owner Jeff came to our house and thoroughly discussed the options with us. They started work shortly afterward, but had to suspend because of weather. Jeff kept us well updated until the weather broke. The workers were punctual and professional, and the end result was a beautiful Pennsylvania blue slate walkway. We also appreciated the landscape work they did, including reinstalling our walkway lights when they were done. We are still getting compliments from our neighbors. Overall, very happy with the job.

Since buying our house a year ago, we have worked with nearly a dozen contractors for everything from carpentry to roofing. Mottern Masonry Design has been by FAR the most pleasant experience to date. I found them on Angie’s List as one of the highest rated companies in the field. After reaching out to them and five other masonry companies in the dead of winter (when other masonry companies just tell you that they don’t work all winter), Guy from Mottern Masonry was the first and only contractor to call the same day as I put out the request. We set up a time to meet the following week. Guy’s responsiveness in communications is a lost art in the trades and among small business managers—he is proactive and thorough in his communication...clear, concise and correct every time. When he and Jeff Mottern came out to do the inspection, they were candid on areas that needed help and honest on areas that did not necessarily need help, despite me naively asking about it. That candid dialogue is the mark of an honest contractor...they aren’t the type to sell you a service that you don’t need. Jeff clearly knows his craft and employs the best. Mottern quoted me an honest and fair price, and were precise in what they could and couldn’t do. The workers showed up the first available day the weather would accomodate the grout setting (two weeks later in early Feb), and his guys hit every possible trouble spot I saw on our house. They did a good job color matching the mortar to our existing masonry. The whole job took only five hours, starting five mins earlier than when they forecasted they’d be there. Then a week later, they returned to hose down the mortar and ensure it was setting properly. Our townhouse masonry has now been reset many years, and our confidence in the aesthetics and structure of the house is restored. Overall, Mottern will be at the top of our list for future projects—even with their competitive pricing, you can’t pay enough for the peace of mind and integrity that this kind of company will bring you as a homeowner. I recommend Mottern Masonry Designs to anyone needing high quality masonry work on their home. My recommendation is based on the excellent work they recently did restoring and upgrading the brick and stone work at my home. I hired Mottern Masonry to replace and enhance the brick and stonework at the front of our home. This included a long, serpentine brick walkway, a front stoop and steps covered with flagstone, a brick patio at the front of the house and a low walled-in garden between the patio and front stoop. The goal was not only to repair and replace the original brick and stonework, which had cracked and settled in several places, but also to enhance the appearance and look of the house. Mottern’s crew removed all of the old brick and stonework, the garden walls and the front steps. They removed the old concrete base and poured a new 4-inch reinforced concrete base for the serpentine walkway, patio and garden walls and poured new front steps, tying the new steps into the stoop with rebar. They recovered the stoop and steps with an attractive, thick Pennsylvania bluestone and built a matching threshold at the front door. The low garden wall was rebuilt and topped with thick Pennsylvania bluestone to match the steps and front stoop. The serpentine walkway and patio were done in traditional red brick pavers, which complemented the brick house. In addition, all vertical areas (i.e. the garden wall, step risers, and front and sides of the stoop) were faced with an attractive chocolate grey stone veneer. This extensive project was completed on schedule (it required three men for three weeks) and on budget. I was very impressed with the high quality of the material and craftsmanship. The thick flagstone that Mottern used was a vast improvement on the thinner flagstone used originally on the stoop and steps. All elements – walkway, patio, stoop – fit together well and the fine quality of materials and workmanship has enhanced the appearance and look of the house. My wife and I could not be happier with the results. I interviewed five contractors and received three bids on this project. Mottern’s proposal was competitive in cost, but superior in terms of quality of materials and scope of work. I feel it was the most cost-effective proposal I received.

They did a beautiful job. Lots of hard work involved. The craftsmanship is top notch and we believe these improvements will last for many years to come. The colors in the stones are gorgeous.

Jeff Mottern and his team were very professional and personable and did a great job. They were not the cheapest quote we had, but we went with them because we felt comfortable with the reviews we had seen, as well as the high quality work shown on their webpage and on Angie's List. They were very helpful and responsive when we had questions and didnt treat us like we were idiots for not knowing the finer points of masonry. Definitely enjoyed working with them and will work with them again in the future.

The project went well. We asked them to pour a new concrete pad for the entrance (the old one was cracked) and replace the failing retaining wall (original from 1957). The final result completely satisfied my requirements and expectations. The project was completed on time and on budget as agreed to. Jeff and Guy were prompt, professional, and courteous and quickly resolved the only issue I had, which was relatively minor. The new wall looks great and I expect to bring them back for some additional work.
