James Madison Shell is almost right next door to our apartment that we had recently moved into, so we figured we would take our cars there for our annual inspections before really looking into / researching mechanics. In July 2008 my husband brought his car there for the annual state safety inspection. We left the car and asked them to call us when the inspection was complete so that we would know when to come back to pick up the car, since there were a couple of cars ahead of us in line to be inspected. Many hours later we had not received a phone call so we walked back to the Shell. His car was in the parking lot and the inspection had obviously already been done, no one had contacted us. The car did not pass the inspection - the mechanics gave a list of items that needed to be fixed, the estimate for which was about $800. We were very sceptical about this since the did not seem to have any problems. The next day my husband took the car to another shop (which we had never used before) near his work and had them check it out, they found ONE ITEM that needed to be replaced which cost about $30. Then his car was good to go. In the year since then there have not been any problems with the car. In July 2009 we took his car to be inspected again (this time NOT at the James Madison Shell) and it passed the inspection with no problems found, so I really find it hard to believe that there was any validity to the problems cited in the 2008 inspection. Personally I feel that they were only trying to take advantage of us and have us pay for excessive repairs that were obviously unnecessary, I'm very glad we had the car taken somewhere else last year so that we did not waste the money.

We are VIP customers. We get discounts on every service that they provide. We get a coupon book also. We have been going to this place for almost 30 years. They are closely tied to the community. We took the Girl Scout troop there, and they were very good at working with and showing them things. They have always been very good. They always call if there might happen to be an unforeseen expense. Very seldom do we have to leave a car there overnight. They do have great records there. They can pull out and look at anything that has ever been done there. There is a new manager there. I have never met him, as my husband does all of the dealing with them now.

I have been using their services for about thirty years. They are convenient. They are trustworthy. They are also competitive with everyone else. The work is always done in the time they say.
