Description of Work: Outdoor lighting for my patio, walkway and trees in my backyard.

Description of Work: We used the "Big Deal" for Affordable Lawn Sprinklers and Lighting for lawn sprinkler tune-up. The landscaping has changed over time and I needed a couple of heads relocated just a few feet and I had one that was broken and they came out and fixed the one that was broken and they moved the one over about two feet.

Description of Work: We contracted with AFFORDABLE LAWN SPRINKLERS & LIGHTING for installation of an irrigation system for the lawn and garden, as well as landscape lighting. I discovered them online while searching for authorized distributors for Unique Lighting Systems, my preferred brand of high-quality solid brass, low-voltage lighting fixtures. Co-owner Reed Libby set up an appointment and came out to the house. I was impressed with his technical knowledge, business sense, and matter-of-fact design sense. I was determined to go all-LED for energy conservation, and we were right on the cusp of this becoming mainstream; Reed clearly digs the technology and stays up to date on the latest, and proven, offerings from their vendors. We delayed for a year, while we put in a major hardscaping project and the LED offerings came into the mainstream, and in that time, we decided we would also add an irrigation system while the yard was all torn up (due to the pond and stream installation). Reed came back again and updated his proposal with better equipment, and added a proposal for a RainBird irrigation system, for the front and back yards and all the gardens. The price was better than we expected. The lighting system includes 2 separate 12-volt circuits (one front, on a timer, and one in back on-demand), 2 well lights, 11 accent lights, and 3 path lights, and 4 underwater LED lights that were provided and setup by the pond company. The irrigation system includes one (very fancy) automated control unit, 8 lawn sprinkler heads, approximately 10 garden sprinkler heads, and a drip line for one very long, 45 degree sloping planted bed. The one nasty surprise of the whole project was what we had to spend (being Maryland residents) on the necessary "back flow preventer" that is required by WSSC for even the smallest of irrigation systems, and must be installed by a Maryland plumber with the special WSSC certification to install and test these things. Talk about overkill! The cost of the fixture alone was around $800, plus the cost of the plumber to install and test it. We had started out with a nominal budget of around $5000 each for a top-quality sprinkler system and landscape lighting system. If not for the crazy back flow preventer, which is a WSSC regulation and which AFFORDABLE, being a Virginia company, is definitely not to blame for, we would have come in well under budget. We are extremely pleased with the value the company provided us, as well as with the timeliness and professionalism they always demonstrated.

Description of Work: Using Angies List, i emailed 5 different irrigation companies. Joe was the first to respond to my email with a call about 45 minutes later. I received two other emails the next day. I also saw another company in my neighborhood getting a system put in. I gave the foreman my info to have them contact me. The company called me 4 days later to schedule the upcoming Saturday morning for a quote. I cancelled my morning plans, and they never showed up. I was rather unhappy. That being said, Affordable was the first and easiest company to schedule a quote with. The foreman who showed up was very nice and took his time explaining what he was going to do. I showed him around my property and explained what areas I wanted watered, and other areas that it would be nice if they got watered, but not as important. He took his shoes off to see the water main in my basement and explained to me the options to connect to it. I had my own ideas and he was very receptive. After the meet and greet was over, the foreman went to his truck for about 15 minutes and came back to present me the quote with a very decent drawing of where the zones would be. I needed 5 zones with 4 or 5 heads per zone. I said thanks and he left with a smile. When the other companies arrived they were nice enough, but didnt seem to care to take the time to really find out what i needed. Joe and his group ended up being about $500 more than my wife and I wanted to spend. The other quotes were within the same range, but I was really excited to finally have a sprinkler system. After explaining to joe about being close in price, he was very happy to meet me at the price I was willing to pay and he didnt make it feel like a hassle. As a side note, I want to explain that I am a local IT contractor. I have all the latest gadgets connecting me to my email. That being said, I sent LOTS of emails to joe with questions about EVERYTHING involving the process. 9 emails out of 10 he responded to my emails within 10 to 20 minutes, sometimes sooner. Only my later in the evening emails did he respond when he got in the next day. I hate hate hate having to call people in general. I prefer to email instead. Joe took all of my emails with stride. He replied with professional answers every time. After a while he even told me to relax and that he would have everything handled. Being a micro manager, that is very difficult for me to do. But I laughed at his response and told him I would try. So if you prefer to do things over email, Joe and his group are great about it. Well except his small copy/paste response on one particular email.... :-) We originally scheduled the install for two weeks after sending in my deposit. Turned out that they could fit me in a week earlier. On install day, about 6 or 7 guys showed up and were straight to work. By no fault of their own, they didnt have the ability to get a pipe under my driveway, so they had to use the trenching machine go through my back yard. I wasn't planning on this, so I was nervous. After they finished running the main lines, the "damage" to my yard was MUCH MUCH less that what I was expecting. 65% of the yard you couldn't tell they did anything. A few spots you can tell where the machine's tracks left a mark. They even went back to tamp down the yard. Once they completed all the connections, the foreman did a quick run though to aim all the heads and I was really happy. Since it was so late into the fall, he cut off the main line water to the sprinklers to ensure no freezing occurred. They completed the job in about 5 hours. That weekend it had warmed up and I decided to turn on the sprinklers due to my excitement. Very cool! Again emailing with Joe we scheduled the winterizing of my system the following week. The guys showed up as planned and on time, and connected the air hose to blow out all the water for the winter. Quick and easy for no charge.

Description of Work: Transformation of system and start up. The tech was difficult to schedule on my time because of distance. The service call was for 45 minutes including drive time. I had thought this company was in my area, appears not. Then they had to come back because of a valve malfunction, again, 45 minutes included drive time. Again, it was not very easy to schedule because of distance from me. Otherwise they were entirely professional, courteous and efficient. I was well advised. But each visit had expensive drive time. I'd be interested in a firm which is closer. The cost above covers 3 visits.
