Robert worked slowly. Over the course of two days he only completed about 30% of the requested work. He made a big mess of installing the faucets. I had to hire a plumber to undo the damage he did, including replacement parts. The owner, Mr. Sikes, had come to our house to estimate the man hours. He thought everything could be done within 2 days. Apparently that wasn't the case. Our disappointment and frustration was paramount. Fortunately, Mr. Sikes only charged us for one day's work. We will not be using Commonwealth Renovations again.

The provider showed up on time, was very professional and discussed the work with me before he began. He replaced the caulking on one shower and did grout and caulking work on another. On the latter, the grout had worn away in places, and the tiles were out of position inside the shower and outside along the bottom of the glass door, such that the glass door did not shut very easily anymore. Everything was repaired and looks great! I used the Angie's List big deal, which was $79 for 2 hours. It took a little longer than that, so I actually paid a little more, but I thought the additional charge was still reasonable. I would use them again.

JB arrived at the designated appointment. I gave him my suggestion and he shared an idea also. He sent Tucker Plumbing to review the possibility of moving water/drain lines. Tucker Plumbing went out of his way to get to my house after he was unable to keep our first appointment. I was expecting a "floor plan" of the design but only got an estimate sheet. JB wanted to satisfy my request for the floor plan but needed to reschedule with another company who had the proper software. I was not interested in taking more of my time with another appointment. JB was apologetic for the misunderstanding of the Big Deal title but I felt that basically I paid $50 for an estimate that most contractors would provide for free.

I purchased the same service last year, and it went wonderfully. The employee told me all the other work the company did, and I subsequently called for an estimate to address the inadequate gutters and the flooding problem I have, and to replace the rotting fascia and stoop railings and replace/add gutters. Mr. Sipe was punctual, and discussed my options and the work he proposed thoroughly. I appreciated the time he took in addressing all my concerns. But since all the information was new, I didn't feel I knew enough at that time to make a comfortable decision that day. I apologized about it, at which time he mentioned he just sided a woman's house after giving her an estimate the year before. So there didn't seem to be a problem concerning my not making a decision at that time- to me, anyway. At the same time that I decided I'd like to review the previous estimate with him and finally have the work done (about a month ago), I saw he was offering the same handyman deal. I purchased the handyman deal again, and called Mr. Sipe on my cell phone. He remembered me instantly but since he was in his car, wanted to speak a little later. The day before the handyman work (for $111) was to be done, the handyman called saying he needed to see the dentist in the morning, and I said I had no problem with him coming in after the dentist appointment. Along about 2:30pm, the handyman called, and told me all the problems he had had. Hold on- Is he going to argue that he's only human and problems occur and deserves some common courtesy? Well, if a contractor expects common courtesy from me, and I believe I already showed him some the day before, then they had better show it to me. If he was able to be working on repairing his car then he had 2 minutes to inform me long before 2:30pm. At no time when he finally called was any inconvenience I experienced acknowledged. He only kept listing his problems. That is only justification. Justification does not in any way acknowledge the other person was caused any trouble and is worth acknowledgment. Justification......acknowledgment/apology.....not the same thing. I can only assume that since Mr. Sipe remembered the estimate from last year but hasn't contacted me to this day, he doesn't need or want the work that I need done. I had a list for the handyman plus there's the countertops, sinks and flooring that need replacing, besides the fascia and gutters, I'm considering siding; but obviously, he's not interested. Maybe it's not going to bring in the $bucks$; even if I have the money to do every repair all at once. So I'll be canceling the $111 deal that I purchased. Having reconsidered my rating criteria, I won't give out any more A's until I have dealt with a company for a good long length of time; Commonwealth Renovations didn't get a straight F because there was no botched work on top of it all....... so that leaves me to give them a D 'overall'.

Everything went great. The company was very accommodating when I had to reschedule twice because of rain (which would have knocked out painting the trim boards). And the handyman who did the work was fast, pleasant, and did a really nice job.
Description of Work: Trimmed massively overgrown ivy from my entranceway that was starting to take over the roof; painted the wooden trim boards that were discolored by the ivy; fixed the switch on my front porch light; and hammered a nail in the brick on the porch so I could hang a picture. It wasn't a really big job. He was okay. I did not spend more than the big deal purchase. He did a nice job. It was just a very small shower with a medium work, not anything heavy duty at all. There was nothing particularly good or bad. As far as the quality of work, it was fine. He did what he said he would do. He did a good job with the grout and calk.
Description of Work: I purchased a big deal for Commonwealth Renovations. They did come and the guy did some in the bathroom. He re-grouted a little bit and that was it. He had just a few places to pull out some calk and replace the calk. He had to pull out and scrape the grout a little bit and replaced the grout.

I need to remind them that they were supposed to come back and fix the mess that they made. The boss came out and looked at it and said that he was going to send somebody back on a Saturday, which was a month ago or more. I need to text him again to see if the person is coming. I did text him before because the last two weekends I had company so I said it was fine, but as of now I would not use them again. I think the guy who owns the business is very sincere and he is responsible for the people that work under him, but he did offer to redo some of the tile work. What I didn't like was that he knew I was putting a vanity there and he did not take the tile all the way to the wall. The vanity is on legs, even though the legs are short, and if somebody for some reason happened to overflow the toilet or the sink in the vanity that water is going to run on the floor, so it's going to find a place where there is no tile and get under it. It wasn't like I didn't have tile for him to do it. He just didn't want to cut those extra strips I guess because he didn't think I'll see it because it was under the vanity. Of course I didn't see it before he left because I actually left him there to get paint samples and when I came back they were almost finished putting the stuff in. I didn't want to walk on the tile because they had just done it, but after it settled two or three days later I went in there and wondered why it wasn't flush. There were certain places where the grout areas between the tiles were not uniform. Some of them didn't have the indentation and were completely filled, so I called the guy up because I had the cell phone of the guy who did the actual work and he said that my floor wasn't completely leveled. I asked him what he meant because it's cement, but he said just because it's cement it doesn't mean that it is level. I thought he should've made adjustments to whatever the stuff was he put under it to accept the tiles so that it could be uniformed. That was what made me actually start paying closer attention, so then I noticed the tile under the vanity was maybe three inches from the wall. I had a painter come in and he said his carpenter would put some thick baseboard back there, but even when he did that I still had a couple of inches where it was still a gap and so I called them again. He came out and said that he could put some molding around there. I paid him for the molding and paid this guy $20 to put the molding around there, but even with that I still have maybe between an eighth or a quarter of an inch gap. Water is going to find an open spot if it's running, so when I went to tile shop to take back the samples of some other tiles I was looking at and did't use to get my refund they asked me about it. I told them and they said water will get under there and that he should've done it all the way to the wall. I agreed and said that's what my other contractor did when I had my bathroom upstairs redone. Those contractors I had then came in there, tiled that bathroom, tiled around my new soaking tub, my new shower, and made two access panels. One of the panels was for heating access and the one was the water access for my soaking tub. They didn't do just plain all the tiles running side-by-side the same way type of work, which this person did and was of course easier for him. He didn't ask me and just did it that way, which I knew was quicker and easier. He did less cutting because all of them are in the same row and it's totally plain. I could live with that, but when you compare the perfect uniformed lines that my other contractors did they were perfect around every tile. It's the same uniform little grout indentation. They're clean and there's no grout that is piled up on one tile and real deep on another. They are all perfect and the flooring is perfect. It's sealed and I didn't have to seal the tile myself. When this guy was getting ready to leave he told me that I was going to have to seal it. I asked him what did he mean because my old contractors didn't tell me anything that I needed to do because it was don. This guy told me that I could get something from Lowe's to spray on it to seal it or for another $50 they could do it. When I mentioned everything to the tile people they told me that they could've bought the grout that already had the sealing in it which was maybe what my other contractors had did. What really ticked me off was the fact that because they thought I wasn't going to see it since it was under the vanity they didn't take my tile to the wall and there's a tile that's very noticeable right there in the middle of the floor. There's very few tiles that have a beautiful uniformed grout area. The tile guy at the store said it's when they go back with the sponge and rinse it they make those lines, but first of all I didn't see them doing that and second of all they chipped a piece of my door frame which I saw when I came back from the paint shop. There was a piece of the door molding propped up against the wall and I saw this little chip that was about four or five inches long. I wondered where it came from and didn't think anymore of it. It wasn't until the painter came that I saw it and he said he'll paint over it. I didn't have the piece of chipped wood that came out of there, so he just painted over it and it's less noticeable because the molding is white and I had the room painted white. One of the things that I pointed out to the contractor himself, and he saw it when he came, was that right there in the threshold where the tile meets the metal trim for my carpet it keeps crumbling. So now half of it is crumbly with whatever that stuff is and the other half is empty where the crumbly stuff is gone and I've swept it away. He said that when the guy comes back he was going to have him put in a threshold, which he should've mentioned before because when my old contractor did my other bathroom that was what he did for both doors that went into that bathroom. He put a nice little block that he called a threshold that he must have gotten from the tile shop and it was a neutral color that was a beautiful match for my tile, so I don't have any crumbling at the entrance of either one of those doors. It's all pretty and I can't saw enough at how beautiful the tile work is in my other bathroom compared to this. When this contractor came out he saw me looking at these books with pavers and stuff. He then asked me if I was getting ready to do some more work and I told him yeah. I had a 14 x 16 ft. deck built that's upstairs and I want to do a patio under it so I won't lose all that space in my yard. He says that they do that too, but I said to myself that he won't be doing that for me because he can't do a simple bathroom there's no way I'm going to pay big bucks to have a natural stone patio that's like 20 x 26 ft. done by them. The bathroom is like 8 x 4 or something, which is small, and he couldn't do it right. The deal was for $359, but I spent more because the amount that they allow for the tile was totally ridiculous. There's no where you're going to find anything decent for that price, so at the time that they came there was a sale going on which was good. The tile that I picked out was probably half the regular price or at least $3 less per square foot than it was prior to the sale, so I paid the difference and the amount that they allowed for the tile. It was $70 and something dollars more, but what was really funny was when I initially called about the tile the contractor price was actually much less which would've cost him no more. I told them that it was okay and paid the difference. I then paid $120 to take out the toilet and put in the toilet, $25 to put the screw in the new light fixture thing on, and that was it. When he said $50 to spray the seal I told him no and that I'll do it, so I went to Lowe's and got my own sealant. It was also $20 to put down the molding and then I paid for all the materials. It was like $285 for additional labor and I'd round it off to $80 for the difference in the tile. I did like that they were punctual, but I did not like that they assumed that they were just going to take away my old vanity because that was what they were getting ready to do. I told them that I wanted to keep it and that I was going to donate it because if anyone was going to get tax credit for it that would be me, so I donated it to Habitat for Humanity. They were putting it close to their truck to take it away, so I told them that I wanted to keep it. I asked them to bring it back and put it in my garage. I didn't like that they chipped my frame and did not attempt to repair it because they could've got some wood glue or something and glued it right in there. I also didn't like that they tried to hide that they did not take my tile all the way to the wall. Just because it's under the vanity doesn't mean I want a half finished floor. The best thing that I can say about them was that they were on time. They got my carpet dirty and filthy. I don't know what it was that they got on there, but I didn't have too much heartburn on that because I knew after all of this was done I was going to have the carpet cleaned anyway. The carpet cleaner did have a hard time getting that gunk off the floor. They were punctual, nice, and courteous. I felt taken advantage of when they did not cover my complete floor. I really don't think they should've charged. It was the guy who put down the molding who did it. It seemed it should've been part of the installation if I bought the molding, especially if you screwed up and I'm trying to fill up a wide gap. I just wouldn't hire them again.

Response from Commonwealth Renovations
Let me first start out by saying that if [member name removed] had read the Big Deal coupon before she purchased it she would have known that there would be additional charges for the services she requested. The other bathroom that she keeps referring to I feel sure already had these charges included in the price and I’m sure she paid a much greater amount then we charged her. I feel she is complaining about things that she already knew in advance. It stated on the coupon that her tile allowance was $1.37. It also stated that it does not include repair of subfloor, pulling and resealing toilets and it also states that the tile will be placed in a straight pattern. It is very clear that it only covers the cost of tile, grout and the labor to install it. [member name removed] picked out the tile and grout so we had no hand in picking out a grout that did not have sealer in it. Tile was run up the wall leaving 1 ¼ in. left for grout on a concrete subfloor. Once the baseboard & the shoemold were installed it left a 1/8 margin which is normal and acceptable. Grout was put as the finishing edge against the wall to finish it so that water would not get behind it. That is out normal installation. We spoke about the threshold initially and she declined it because it was extra and then she said we didn’t install one. She was made aware of this from the beginning. We tried to schedule her 2 weeks in a row to run a bead of sealer across the shoemold and install a threshold for her and she was unable to do that each time so we waited for her to let us know when it would be a convenient time for us to come out. It is our practice to haul away anything we remove as a courtesy to the homeowner and were happy to let her have her vanity back when she requested it. As far as the chipped wood, [member name removed] never spoke about it to me when I went back out there so I am confused as to why she would say we did that and never let me know of it. I am sorry that she was not satisfied with everything, but I feel alot of this could have been avoided if she’d read the coupon before purchasing it. JB Sipe

I paid for this Angie's List deal during the first week of August and was promised a call within 2 days. I called numerous times and left messages, but never received a call back. I finally called Angies list, and they told me to try him one more time or they would try to find someone else to do the work or I would get a refund. JD the company owner finally did call me. Someone was sent out almost 4 weeks after I initially purchased the deal. The worker was polite when he came in. I showed him the two bathrooms that the tubs needed some caulking around, and 1 bath needed minor touch up grout work on the wall tile. I stayed downstairs and listened to a lot of noise, metal scraping and the sound of power tools. About 45 minutes into the job, he came downstairs to get me and said there was a problem. I went to look and he had scraped to far over into the tub surface so the tub was discolored. The tub was initially white, but over years it had turned a darker white. The tub looked like new before he came, because I kept it spotlessly clean. Since he had scraped too far over the edge of the tub from the caulking that was already around the tub, the tub had an area that was bright white about an inch around the tub. It looked terrible. When you touch the surface you can feel the difference between the scraped area, and the tub itself. When he came I had given him a choice of about 5 kinds of caulk, 2 kinds of grout that I had purchased at Home Depot the day before, as well as painters tape that he could use put around the area to protect the rest of the tub. He didn't use the tape. I have had the tub caulked numerous times over the years and even done it my self without anyone ever doing this before. I would have been better off doing the job myself. He spent 1 hr 15 min here, and then left. He didn't even go in the second bath to do any work. While he was still here, I called JD the owner of the company, and told him what had happened. He told me to tell the repairman to call him. The worker immediately packed up and left. I paid for 2 hours. The worker caulked around one small tub. I told him that I was not satisfied. I would never under any circumstances use this company again. I have looked back on previous ratings from other customers, and this company does not have consistently good ratings in fact quite a few bad ratings. It should not even be on Angie's List.

It went really well with Commonwealth Renovations. They are respnsive and exercise excellent communication. We decided not to go with them but we would readily recommend them to others.
Description of Work: I contacted the company to receive an estimate for a moderate to major kitchen remodel. The company promptly returned my phone call and were out to my house within a few days. The gentleman that came out was courteous and professional and attentively listened to our desires for our kitchen. We solicited his suggestions on the proposed layout. He was quite thorough with measurements and asked us numerous questions to ensure he understood exactly what we wanted. Within two weeks he returned with three different proposed kitchen designs. The designs were quite detailed and he explained each specific configuration and answered our questions. the pricing was quite reasonable. Ultimately we decided to go with another company due to a winning design that we loved. This company was a photo finish second place and would recommend them to anyone.
