Mike Anderson was great to work with. The team was extremely professional. They took great care of our furnishings while performing the service. Mike did state up front that we (the client) would be responsible for the materials and further for picking up the materials. However, there was some miscommunication over what materials that they wanted. The company was diligent. I did think the dry wall mud could have been a bit better applied. I think, though a bit expensive, the price was fair for all that the company performed. It is very hard to find such a conscientious company these days.
Description of Work: This coupon was for 40 hours worth of labor. We used the time to fix a leak in an exterior wall in the family room.

It would have been a bigger job for him and 4 or 5 weeks of project time and we weren't comfortable with him doing the work replacing the doors because he specializes in bathroom and kitchen remodeling. We didn't realize how involved the bathroom remodel would have been. It also would of been nice if he would have been a little more prepared for our meeting so we could of felt more comfortable using him for our project.
Description of Work: He came out and we sat down for 2 hours and got to know him. We then showed him one of the jobs replacing a patio door and taking out another door in our kitchen. He said they would have to pull up the floor, flashing, and replace one of the other doors with a window. He recommended we replace all the siding because the siding on our house currently is too old. He wasn't comfortable doing a project in our bathroom that involved putting in a shower insert. H also said the tile would have to be torn up and replaced because the tile we currently have is no longer made.

He told me that we’d get started and see how far the Big Deal would take us, and then we’d see how much more that I’d owe after. This wasn’t a good experience. I went to the home improvement store to purchase a built-in microwave so that it wouldn’t use up the hours I’d purchased, but he didn’t give me any specifications that he wanted. When I returned, he took hours to make it fit, and made me feel like it was my fault, and that I was paying for labor for him to fix his own mistakes. He also told me to go get some Bunkie Board, but again with no specifications. I bought the ½”, and when I got back he told me that I needed the ¼”. Once they started doing the work, they wound up using the 1/2" and I took the ¼” back to the store. Once that 40 hours was up, he did offer me another 40 hours at the Big Deal price. I wound up paying him another $3700 on top of the Big Deal to finish the project. The project also took longer than expected to complete, and that cost me a month’s rental income. This really bothered me because he’d said he was going to bring his whole crew with him to knock my job out, but instead they were sent to another job. He only brought one person with him.
Description of Work: He came out to do a kitchen/bathroom remodeling, as well as an in-law apartment.

This job was more then what we bargin for, but I explain the problem that he had. This was more then one project that he waited done, it went from straighten a room out to window, door , Tile floors concrete board, and trim and floor, wood work to plumbing, to moving bathroom to other side of the room the work was inpeccable. he even told me that he hire on more then one job, Also put a complete kitchen in in a short time he was crush for time so I bought more then one grew in he expect allot. but doesn't want to pay for quaity work, I had my round with this type of customer, we don;t for rice! he wanted me to do more work at his house and I cancel because of what I went through, don't get me wrong he a nice person but he just cheap. I should of taken picture it came out perfect. He rented it right away. This was his second house. This wasn't even enough to pay the grew that we had working , we went in the hole. Thanks Anderson Construction Great job.
Quality of work was excellent. We had an issue with the quality of the ceiling paint. Mike worked with me and the manufacturer to obtain replacement paint and pay for the labor to repaint the kitchen and family room ceilings. Resolving the issue with the manufacturer took a lot of time and effort on Mike's part and he kept on top of the issue and continued to push until the manufacturer provided payment to complete the job.

Mike Anderson met with me to discuss what project we could reasonably accomplish in the timeframe available. Deal does not include materials; but Mike worked with us to itemize items for us to procure for the project we selected. Team worked diligently and performed quality work. Mike came by himself to finish up final touches to make sure we were happy with the results.
Description of Work: Purchased Big Deal - 40 hours of general contracting services. Updated 37 sq.ft. bath; replaced vinyl flooring with new sub-flooring and tile. Replaced baseboards; removed and replaced vanity; set new mirror and light fixture. Repaired wallboard and painted room. Spent additional for materials, fixtures, and supplies; so total update cost roughly $4000. Mike hauled away old vanity and light fixture for no additional cost.

We first contacted Anderson Construction back around October. We were pulled in by the $1870 for a week of general contract work deal. They were never able to give me a definite date on when they could start work until I got a phone call in mid-January informing me they would be arriving to start on the following day. The crew seemed like good, hard-working guys. but there are two things you need to keep in mind: 1. In order to keep your costs down, they highly recommend that you provide them with all needed supplies. In our case, as the work went on, additional issues were uncovered, and I ended up having to to Home Depot 4 or 5 times over the course of a week. 2. The week of general contract work deal is actually 40 man hours, so if a three-man crew is sent out, that "week" ends up being less than two days! After that, a price to finish up the work they've begun is negotiated. I thought the negotiated price was fair, but just be forewarned. So far, we are satifsfied with the work they did (time will tell if there are any issues, but there IS a 5-year guarantee). We will definitely consider hiring them again the next time we're in need of serious home repair work.

We bought the Angie's List coupon for a "general contractor for a week." The project was to move the washer and dryer from our cellar up to the ground floor kitchen of our 1920s house. This was a challenging project requiring considerable electrical and plumbing work to re-route water and drain lines and to provide electrical power for the washer and dryer. We also needed the construction of a wall to enclose the washer/dryer, work to vent the dryer outside, and a kitchen island had to be moved. Understandably, this work cost more than the coupon. We bought many of the parts and supplies ourselves to minimize the expenditure of contractor time. We worked directly with Mike Anderson, who came and gave us an appraisal of the job and also performed much of the work himself. We found Mike and his crew to be very easy to work with and communicate with. They worked fast and kept the work area extremely clean. We have been very satisfied with the work. There were no problems with the plumbing and electrical work, and the framing and drywall work is impeccable. Mike was conscientious, checking back with us to make sure we were satisfied with everything, and also helped us with a broken outside water pipe that was totally unrelated to the work we were doing on the inside of the house. We would definitely use Anderson Construction again for other projects.
Well, there were more caveats than were described in the coupon. From what I understood the coupon read, it just said general contractor work. However, when I spoke to them in person, they said that there were limits: no exterior work (which was what I originally intended), and no electrical. The coupon was limited to interior work: painting, bathroom tiles, etc. So, I did have to somewhat change my original intent. However, the painting that they did was very good. They had to not only paint, but patch up the walls/ceilings where there were gauges, problems etc, and they did an exceptional job.
Mike and his crew were fantastic. They were polite and professional and the quality of the drywall in particular work was impeccable. Each night that the crew left our house they would clean up to the point where you never would have known we were having work done on the house. Mike looked for cost savings and kept us informed as to how the projects were progressing. He also recommended future fixes for minor issues that he spotted in our home that we or someone else could perform. We have a couple more projects in the pipeline for the coming year and will be using Mike and his team again.
Description of Work: We had purchased the Angie's List big deal for Anderson but ended up having several larger projects that took longer than the time allotted with the deal (which we assumed going into the projects). The largest project was moving the washer/drawer in the basement. This included moving the electrical and plumbing and lots of drywall work. We also had chair rail installed in our dining room and the fix of a leak behind a bulkhead in the dining room that also required drywalling.

They were late the 2 days he(the owner) came. He complained about everything. His life whatever. Never cleaned anything up. My equipment is ruined that he had me buy. Alot of wasted time. He was misleading.... After spending that much money I still have to hire someone to put the gutters up at the worst time of year. He should have done something else and left my gutters alone. At least I had gutters before he came. When he was to return he didn't and called halfway through the day. He would not give me a straight answer on the phone about how much more money he wanted to put the gutters. I felt uneasy with this guy from the beginning. Big mistake. This guy tears everything up and you either have to cough up thousands of more dollars or Give up a car and more money for him to finish. If he couldn't do this I had plenty of inside work he could've done. He just assumes we have an endless supply of money. When I asked him why they primed the ramp and didn't finish with the gutters he just said that wasn't enough time. A whole day wasted. It's a wheelchair ramp! He was clearly mad I didn't give him more money. The house is a rambler built in 1956. 60 feet long. I just wanted the gutters replaced. It's a straight line back and front.
Description of Work: They were really late. He took the gutters off my house and then kept complaining. He ran the time down and when he decided my time was up he told me several days later after the fact. I still have no gutters up. He had an attitude the 2nd day. He talked about himself nonstop. He bragged nonstop that he was the best construction co. in the entire area. He wanted $4,700.00 more to put my gutters up. When I said no, he said another $1,870.00 plus one of my cars! He left all of the equipment he had me buy out in the rain. He had a worker prime a deck when we knew it was going to rain for 3 days. When I said no to his demands of more money or my car he through my stuff in the rain and spun his wheels out of here. So I paid $1,870.00 and another $900.00 in supplies. He hung a little shadow box 7 inches higher than we agreed to hang it. I have plaster walls. This is terrible. The worst....

I value all members feedback on Angie's List as this is essential to the success of our business. This member purchased a Big Deal coupon offer for $1870 for a General Contractor for a week(40 hours of labor). The coupon included a 2 hour consultation to discuss the work needed at which time the member let me know that she had some outdoor projects. The coupon offer was specific to interior work, but we always try to be accommodating, and willing to do the outside work. As we checked off projects on this member's list, the 40 hours was almost gone, and i let her know. At that time, if she wanted us to continue with the work, we offered to honor the same hourly rate as the coupon. She agreed to have us continue, and we completed an additional 16 hours of work, of which we HAVE NOT received payment. Throughout the course of the job, the member expressed how happy she was with the work. Anderson Construction strives to make sure our customers understand and are comfortable with the services they will be receiving, and i encourage you to browse through our other reports for a more accurate representation of the quality service we deliver.

We bought a Big Deal with this company and unfortunately had to have Angies List refund our payment (which Angie's List did readily). No where in the Big Deal did it set limitations on what type of work was included in the 40 hours we bought, so we planned to use this for a significant amount of electric work, both inside and out. Over months of phone calls with the contractor telling us what we wanted to have done was not really what was covered in the BIg Deal but they would do it, we had yet another call and were told by Anderson Construction they would not do the electrical work at all and they suggested, multiple times, other projects (this was all over the phone). Projects more in line with their definition of the work the Big Deal was for (again, there were no limitations identified in the Big Deal on what work would or would not be performed). At that point we contacted Angies List to look into a refund.
Description of Work: No work was actually performed.

Anderson Construction's initial communication with this member was very specific in explaining The Big Deal coupon purchase was for indoor work, and did not qualify for the level of Electrical work that they required. We always try to meet the needs of our customers, but under the circumstances associated with the work requested by this member, we declined the opportunity to complete the job, and suggested they utilize Angie's List to find an electrical contractor to meet their specific needs. The member mentioned months of phone calls back and forth and this lengthy communication process was related to challenges in reaching them versus our availability and response time. This member was provided with a full refund for The Big Deal purchase.

Workers showed up on time and performed all the work that was requested of them. They installed new base molding and trim around the windows. The crew was very professional and did a great job, the molding looks fantastic. After finishing work they cleaned up each night before they left. I purchased the deal through angies list and they even stayed a few hours extra to finish up.

Good. Mike was hard to get to call me back and get stuff scheduled. But once I started talking to him, he was very responsive and attentive. We agreed upon a price for the project, although as the project progressed, we did have some disagreement as to what the negotiated price and work included (as minor issues popped up). His team moved quickly and got the job done aggressively. I actually wanted them to slow down because I had to wait for the vanity top to come in. All in all, the experience was good and I'd use Mike again. Even with the issues, Mike was far more reasonable to work with than other contractors I've worked with.

I purchased the Big Deal for $1870 for "a General Contractor for a Week" back on August 5th. One of the reasons I purchased the deal was because it said it included two hours of project management. I have a sizable "punch list" of home improvements, so I had hoped that someone from Anderson Construction would be able to meet with me to go over the list and give me an idea of which projects could be completed with the Big Deal and/or how much more it would cost to do other items on the list. When Mike called, he said that he had sold so many Big Deals that he wouldn't be able to get to my project for a while. I told him about my list and asked when he would be able to stop by to take a look at the project areas. He said he didn't do that, that I should just pick something on my list and that he would get back in touch with me in September to schedule the job. I chose to have the flooring in my basement replaced. When I mentioned the type of flooring I was considering to replace the warped laminate flooring, Mike made a suggestion for a different material (one that I hadn't considered) and recommended that I go ahead and buy all the materials to have it ready on a certain day. I rushed out to Home Depot, loaded up my car with all the supplies and brought it all back to be ready for the crew on a Wednesday. Wednesday came and no one showed up. I called late in the day and found out that the crew was still on another job and that they would come on Friday. Friday came and I got a call that the crew was not going to come out until Monday. I fully expected the job to be delayed again, as Monday was the day Superstorm Sandy came through, but, I'll have to give it to them, they showed up despite the threatening weather. When they showed up, Mike was surprised at the type of flooring material I had purchased and seemed unprepared to install it, despite having been the one to suggest it. He said that since that material was what I had, they would go ahead and install it, even though it would normally cost more than "general contracting" or carpentry, which was what the Big Deal certificate was good for. After checking in and getting the crew set up, Mike left to go to another job. The crew who did the work was good, albeit a little slow. They worked long hours, even though it meant driving home in the dark, stormy weather. I was surprised by a couple of things that I hadn't run into with contractors in the past. For example, we were asked to pay for a blade that wore out during the course of the job, and asked to purchase a large container of material (which the job only required a small amount of) even though the crew had a full container with them. When the job went past the 40 hours we had pre-paid (the Big Deal), there was some debate about how much we would be charged to finish the job. Since I had to leave town before the work was done, my husband handled the negotiations. I hesitated to write this report because I had mixed feelings about the experience. I'm glad we had the work done, and it was done satisfactorily. And I don't think any of the problems were due to negligence or bad intentions, and I don't want to malign anyone. But, it was a rather long, drawn-out and difficult process due to communication difficulties, misunderstandings and delays. For any future projects, I will probably go back to a contractor I've used in the past who is more expensive but very responsive and does high quality work.

Overview - excellent work, nice guys, communication could use improvement. I was a bit frustrated with the scheduling because Mike wanted to schedule the jobs all in a row but could say when they'd be done at each site, so it didn't really allow me to plan much in advance and I wanted to be home so I had to plan to stay home from work. (I know they had a lot of demand from the coupon so scheduling was challenging.) It worked out that I could be home when he proposed coming. I also was frustrated with the lack of information upfront about pricing. Understandably, he wanted to do the job well and take however long it took for them to do it right, but that didn't allow me to budget and determine how much I could get done within my budget. So they began and after a couple of days I had to say stop, I really need to figure out how much this is going to cost, and he did give me a price that I thought was fair for the work to be done. (I redeemed the Big Deal coupon, which was $1850, I think, and then paid an additional $1850 for the rest of the work.) Despite these communication issues, Mike and the two other guys were very nice and did excellent work. I would be happy to work with them again and was very comfortable having them in my house. (One of the guys even gave me a ride to VA on his way home - so nice.) And very high quality work, which is the most important thing when investing in your house.

The work went well, paid great attention to detail, would not be satisfied until all was done properly. His thoroughness led to a significant change of scope, and the level of care and detail translates into a slightly slower hourly progress. It's important to have clear and constant communication with Mr. Anderson as the project progresses: he will explain everything and offer recommendations. If I could change anything about the experience, I would have liked to have a job-based estimate from the start rather than pay on hourly rate, but the project started out as an Angie's List coupon, so the hourly rate billing was the default extension when the project went beyond the original scope due to unanticipated complications. Mr. Anderson and his staff were all pleasant, polite, punctual, professional and trust-worthy, and take great pride on doing a good job.

Mike was hardworking and on time, and subcontracted tile installation to a perfectionist. The end result was good, save for some small issues with trim. Everything else was difficult to endure. Mike was not clear in his initial estimate. I believed this project would cost 1870 in general contracting, plus 5500 in materials and additional labor, for a total of 7370. I discussed this with Mike, and ultimately decided to go ahead, with the common understanding that this exceeded our budget. As outlined below, these numbers were dramatically different than our bill. Though he tried, Mike was unable to secure the tile we wanted, and I purchased it and had it delivered, believing this would be deducted from our total. It was not. Although I contested it, no materials were included in the quoted price. The estimate I signed stated that- but it was not as we discussed over the kitchen table and I had no reason to go back and check the estimate verbiage. Mike charged us an additional 1870.00 for labor based on additional time needed, and not forecasted. Mike asked me to purchase and deliver additional grout, backer boards, etc. Mike ordered the items with the statement that the cost would be under 500 dollars. The bill was over 1100 dollars. In the end, our 7400 dollar project cost us 13,000 dollars. Mike said he would remove various levels of old flooring to get us to a smooth floor level. He chose not to do that for whatever reason, leaving us with slightly different floor levels. We discovered old tile, possibly asbestos, which Mike said he would have tested, and alluded to having tested, but he never shared the results. He did some type of encapsulation, but we are unsure whether there was anything to be concerned about in the first place. The subcontractor did a great job, but had to leave while tiling was in progress. Mike got another crew in to finish, understanding we were greatly inconvenienced, however their work was not to the same standard. We expected the junctures of the floor and wall would be finished with quarter round, caulk, or something, but this was not included, leaving an unfinished appearance. We hired someone else to finish it out, which is another expense we had to bear. Mike was great about keeping in contact and working with us on timing. He was very personable, and seemed genuinely interested in our satisfaction. Mike called later to check on our other, ongoing renovation work. Unfortunately, we feel overcharged and early misconceptions over cost were never satisfactorily resolved. It was an expensive lesson learned. Though his work was average or better, and this may be an anomaly, we cannot in good conscience recommend Mike to others.
Description of Work: Removal of existing flooring, build up with hardiboard, tiling of main level.

Response from Anderson Construction
Our Company came in to do our job and to find this job was big. We find there was different level of floors and we had to do all kind of leveling unexpected work, Tearing layer after layer up and to get the floor as level as we could. There was all kind of additional work we did and didn't even charge for it.This was a old house, Our company did our best to please this customer and we did the best that we could and we did enjoy working for them, they had more then one contractor working on job,to be honest i cut him allot off the price, They where charging at Home Depot 5 Dollars a Square foot for 12x12 only. And that doesn't include door jams threshold and leveling floor out, we did 18x18 and granite Around Island into the floor without any extra charge. The price for 18x18 is 11 Dollar a square foot. I pay my guys 5 dollars a square foot To install, Our company went in the whole doing the job. We charged 5 Dollars square foot. We were very nice and always on time and we went the extra 9 yards for the customer. Our company will always be there for our customer and help them with all there needs. Some Customer just don't know.

The items on my project list were not a good match with this Angie's List big deal. As a result, I didn't have 40 hours worth of work and had to tell Anderson Construction that we would try to work out something later as I would still like to use their services. I told Mike I would call him a bit later for a follow up discussion about the projects.
Description of Work: I purchased a big deal through Angie's List for this company for a general contractor for a week.
