The effort took longer than what we had planned, but not due to Anderson Construction. Every time they started something, such as removing wall paper, they ran into problems done by a previous contractor 20 years ago. They kept us fully apprised as to what was happening, showed us the problems, briefed us on alternatives to remedy the problems and worked as quickly as they could. The quality and workmanship was fine. Since we were not available once they started putting the bathrooms back together, we had to rely upon Michael Anderson to pick out things like wall colors, toilet colors, towel racks, etc. If we were to do it again, we'd pick them out ourselves -- not that what he picked out was bad, but just different from what we thought. But Mike talked us through what he selected and why and we came around to his way of thinking. He really does know his stuff, having done it this stuff for 20+ years. He's got a very good team of people who do a good job. An added benefit of using Anderson Construction is that Mike knows a number of other contractors and was able to get our house painted -- inside and out, got our deck refinished, replaced a front door, and has found a firm to sand/repair our hardwood floors. Because of his personal commitment to us, we are planning on getting our house on the market 2-3 months sooner than we had planned. We are very pleased with Mike, as a professional and a nice guy.
Description of Work: We originally contracted with Anderson Construction to renovate 2 upstairs bathrooms at a coupon price. However, once they got into the project, they discovered a number of problems caused by a previous renovation 20 years ago. They ended up having to remove and replace all of the drywall, electrical and sub-flooring.

Overall this was a good experience, however the initial meeting and understanding all the supplies I had to get was intimidating. There was also, seemingly, an assumption that I had the same level of construction, tools and supplies understanding that the person initially estimating what needed to be done and what was needed, was the same. After that hurdle of getting the supplies and dealing with not just the large supplies, that I needed to have delivered because I couldn't handle it myself and the small supplies, was taken care of the crew who did the work was very good and very thorough. The estimate was really on-target also. The price, while I put a B above, it was a fair price, it was just higher than I wanted to spend and that's why the B. But as I said it was a fair price.
Description of Work: Redid my kitchen floor as the first time I got it done it was done very badly.

NEVER AGAIN!!! My $444 "deal" cost me over $1200. While I expected additional charges because the bath was a little bigger than the 40 sq. ft. that was covered I didn't expect it would be that much and if I had been given that cost upfront I would not have done it. I've dealt with a lot of contractors but never one like this one. He couldn't quote me a price because he said he didn't know what he might run into once he got started. I got charged an extra $375 to remove the old flooring because the tile, thin set and tile board was 3/4 of an inch thick. The fine print said nothing about this. The deal said "remove old bathroom floor and haul away all trash". It took 3 months for them to get to my project. I told him when we met that I was going to be gone for ten days in September so they couldn't do the work during that time. I got an e-mail while I was gone saying they were going to start the project! Once they finally started the project in October, Mike and George showed up to remove the old flooring which was completed in one day. Day two someone else came out to put down the new tile. They ran out of thin set before all the tile was done. Mike called ME and wanted me to go to the store to get additional thin set. I've never had any contractor do something like that nor would I ever ask one of my customers to do what they are paying me to do. Mike seemed to think that the fine print that was part of the coupon was only some of the things that weren't included. As for the project itself, it was OK, nothing special. Luckily I am fairly handy at doing a lot of things my self so I can do some of the things that will need to be done.

This coupon that the customer purchased only covered $1.27 / square feet. Coupon covered $50.80, and it says that we will bag the tear out material. The customer was dealing with more square foot than what was on the coupon, so that means also he had more doorways with threshold that needed to be installed. This was not a normal bathroom. Also customer has installed a pattern which was not included on the coupon, it was only supposed to be a regular pattern installed. The costs that were inquired were the additional man hours that needed to do the work. My man hours and payment out of pocket ended up being more than what he had payed, but we continued to do the job and explained to the customer that this was what it would take to complete the job. Customer negotiated with contractor and the price was lowered. The contractor hauled everything away and supplied more than what the coupon covered. The job came out perfect and customer said that he was completely satisfied with the overall job, hoping that he changes his mind on the grade,

When I purchased the coupon on Angies list, it was for general construction and I had a year to use it. Mike the owner called me repeatedly to schedule but I had not had time to pick out what I wanted. Each time, we talked I had to remind him of the work I wanted. He also told me that he has different rates for electrical, plumbing etc but the coupon did not indicate anything other than general contracting so at one point I had to ask him what general contracting included. When the job started, progress was very slow with one person usually working an another watching/helping. After day 4, Mike the owner showed up at the end of the day to indicate that it would take 32 hours more to finish the job and I owed him 4771.00 I really felt like at that time, I had no other options but to finish this out because two bathrooms were torn apart. While the work that was done was good, there was nothing special. They did do a nice job cleaning up and the workers were friendly. Within a few days after they left, one of the toilets stopped working and then the other one stopped. Mike had to come back to seal the tile and when he did, he was adamant that it was not their fault and probably the result of an old water heater. My water heater is maybe 6 months old and I would have been fine with him telling me that when they do work, sometimes opening and closing the lines, causing some sediment or other issues. He did end up clearing the sediment and they are fine now but it was the attitude. He also was reluctant to provide timesheets and a receipt for plumbing supplies ($300) that were purchased. I asked for the timesheets as I had 5 people in my house over 6 days and I could not fathom how it took 96 hours to do the job. He did finally provide me an accounting of time but--- I'm still trying to figure out what took them so long but think the key to realize is that you should expect to pay for a helper to hold a screwdriver at 85 bucks an hour. In the past, I've worked with a handyman who gets in and gets out. If he brings a helper, it's at a reduced rate but usually they both were working to finish the job. The problem is that he's so busy, it's hard to schedule with him. I wanted to try a larger company as I need to do a kitchen remodel but I will not have Anderson back. If you decide to use them, get an estimate of hours in advance along with the rate.
Description of Work: I wanted to update two small bathrooms- one is a half bath (3'x6') and full bath (5'x5') not including the shower. The updates involved installing tile flooring and replacing the vanities, installing a light fixture in one bath, replacing the electrical outlet/light switches in both bathrooms. I planned on doing the painting and installing the mirrors and towel racks. When they removed the vanity from the half bath, they determined that pipe would need to be moved because I was having them put in an pedestal sink. Since the half bath is above an unfinished storage room where all the pipe is exposed, they did not have to do any major work associated with opening walls. The cost of service 6641.00 was for labor only. I purchased an Angies list coupon for 40 hours for 1870 but the work exceeded the coupon by 56 hours and that cost was 4771.00 or 85.20 per hour. They also bought 300 in plumbing supplies and I bought all other material.

When the company went out and started working we noticed the customer had plumbing problems inside where the vanity was. It needed to be moved so it wasn't in the way. The owner told the customer that it wasn't apart of her rate and that we would get everything prepped and start moving the PVC and the plumbing inside the wall, so we had to end up moving it to downstairs to the basement to be able to run new lines into the bathroom. Not only did we have to do drywall and finishing work and prep everything before we could put things back, we were doing all of the work the customer asked us to do. When we finished with the coupon we were on the customers time and I lowered the rate and had also taken off hours and retrieved materials to do job site. It was the detailed work that was asked of us to complete from sub flooring to tiling and installing fixtures and toilet. I was upfront with the customer completely. Hopefully you will call us in the future, we enjoyed working with you and your great hospitality.

Purchased the deal on 8/22. Was suppose to hear from Anderson Construction by Monday 8/25. Got a email from Mike (service provider) via Angie's List email to call him to go over the project on 8/26. Same day, I replied back via email with dates to meet. He emailed on 8/27 with another request to call him and that he needed my telephone number. I called himbut got voice mail so left my info along with my telephone numbers. Since I couldn't get a hold of him on the phone, sent an email with my telephone numbers. He emailed on 8/28 to call him when I got home. My husband called him later that day and they spoke about coming by later that day. Mike said he'd be in touch to let us know if he could squeeze us in on 8/28. Later, Mike calls me, returning my call from the message I left 8/27. He did not realize that he spoke to my husband a bit earlier that afternoon regarding our project. I did not get a good impression after this. I felt he was overwhelmed trying to meet with as many clients as he could squeeze in one day. He later called about 6pm letting us know he would be on the way after his current client. We finally met him about 7pm. We showed him the bathroom that he was to be renovating. He noticed that we have an older bathroom with cement tile and cast iron tub. He mentioned that would be an extra $15/sq. ft. He took some measurements (didn't write down the measurements) but did not tell us how much extra that would be b/c he didn't have his calculator. He explained that they would demo the tub, tile around the tub and floor only. I asked about the wallpaper, I believe he said they could do that but they didn't know what would be under it so didn't know if that'll be extra or not. He said if we wanted to remove it, it would be easier to do. He also talked about the plumbing and placement of the bath faucets and that may have to move. Every time we asked if it would be additional, he kept saying we're getting the discounted rate. Not sure what that meant, was that included or were we getting a discounted rate for the additional work? We also talked about where to purchase tile and materials. He recommended a couple of retailers to look into. After discussing a few more issues,we concluded our meeting. Mike said he'd call us with the contact information. He called my husband the next day and emailed the info to me on 8/29. My husband and I were confused over some of the things we talked about. After the holiday weekend, Mike emailed us about the reps, which we did not go see during the weekend. Since we were still unclear on the additional costs for the demo of our tub and cement tile and plumbing, we emailed Mike to his direct email b/c I was tired of having to sign into Angie's list to check the email. We asked for specific costs relating to the tub/floor demo which he should have been able to calculate for us. When he responded, he did not address the additional cost for the demo and only mentioned that would not know about the plumbing until the wall was opened up. And he again asked for me to call to discuss further. I think he could have given us a couple of scenarios with an estimate attached to each one rather than telling us "don't know until the wall is opened up". I am not going to have a contractor open up the wall and then tell me it's going to cost X dollar amount to take care of. Overall we were not comfortable with the fact that he did not give us any cost estimates for work that was not included in the deal especially in writing and didn't address our questions in our email. I know he likes to talk to his clients on the phone for faster response, but I prefer emailing as a primary means of communication so there is no confusion about what was discussed. I got the impression that he is the owner and likes to meet with his clients personally which is great. But think he may be spreading himself too thin and not devoting the time each of them needs.

I called him as soon as I purchased the deal. He did not call me back for a week. He called me back and wanted to come a on a day that I would be working. I tried to call him ahead of time to have him come out when I would not be working. He came in the evening at 8 o'clock. He looked around and wrought up an estimate. He did not bring tile samples. He wanted me to pay and additional 895 dollars.

I did get a return call but it took over 3 weeks. They seemed too too busy to take on new work. I asked about putting in a tile floor in my master bath. The man I spoke to took my name and address and said he would stop by to take a look and provide a quote when he could. I figure that they must be doing really well to not contact me for so long.

They made us rip down two walls that my son put up. The ceiling fans were never finished as well. The putting up of the walls took two days. I don’t know why it took two days. My son had both walls up and tiled in one day. After the workers put up the two walls they told me 40 hours was up under the Big Deal. He tried to give me a bill for materials that wasn’t itemized. He tried to bill me for a wet saw when we had one and they had reused screws. We also had to clean up the mess and take it to the dump ourselves. I’m very unhappy and want my money back. I feel like I’ve wasted my money, my bathroom is in worse condition than when he started. He made many promises until I removed a previous bad review and then he changed his tune and hasn’t done anything and we haven’t heard from him since.

Their work quality was excellent, however it was a bit more than I wanted to spend. He was good to give me a discounted rate as went longer than the week. They worked hard. The owner was always accessible.
Description of Work: This was a Big Deal for a general contractor for a week. They enclosed a wall in the basement and repaired some others. They also painted everything as well. Not only was Mike on time and courteous but he was willing to work with us on pricing so we could stay within a strict budget. We are a military family who has to prepare our home to sell rather quickly because we have new orders and were dealing with issues caused by the previous owners of the home having bad work done, along with squirrels burrowing into our second story. He was also willing to work with a crazy schedule caused my ongoing medical treatment and was very careful to clean up to prevent adding to my sickness. The new bathroom is beautiful, it works well and perfect for resale. The metal combination material he used on our siding to cover the damage by the squirrels is amazing and has kept the from being able to reopen the holes. We have a few other things to be done, like a kitchen refresh and new flooring and will be using Anderson again because they have been great. I can safely say I would and have recommended him to all my neighbors and family, and those who have used him did so with great success.

He basically rehabbed the whole bathroom. He worked on some plumbing issues, which we didn't know that we had and minor electrical issue. They also added a pedestal sink, new toilet and tiled the floor. Its beautiful, they were on point in explaining how to take care of the tile. He was just remarkable! They workers were so great. They were on time and the job was started and finished right on schedule. They were really neat and put cloths down to make sure they didn't dirty the floor. I would highly recommend him. He is a great guy and he does great work. He may do my bathroom in 2-3 months.
Description of Work: He put in flooring, counter tops, cherry wood cabinets, and even put in my appliances.

We discovered termites in our basement (which is our one-year old's play room) and once my husband opened the wall, we realized that some of the beams were destroyed and needed to be replaced in a small area of the basement. Mike was able to get his crew out to make the repairs a day or two after we first called them. We really appreciated that they were able to fit us in so quickly. As with their last job for us, they meticulously cleaned up each night before they left the jobsite and did an excellent and speedy job drywalling and painting. We were very pleased and relieved!
Description of Work: Replaced 3 floor joists, treated for termites, insulated, and replaced and painted the drywall.

Issues began at the beginning with lack of communication about needs for job. I repeatedly asked what supplies and parts I could obtain to ensure that the service provider, Anderson Construction, focused their efforts, and the hours that were obtained through the Big Deal, on the job. I had taken notes during our initial consultation but the SP did not provide specifics about size, type, or confirmation that the list that I had was complete. I also was unable to obtain in writing an estimate of the number of hours for each of the jobs that we discussed as a possibility. As an initial project, I chose a very straightforward re-flooring (ceramic tiles that I provided) and painting of a small, half bath on the ground floor. This job required removing and re-installing the existing toilet and pedestal sink plus replacing the faucet, flush mechanism, and light fixture, which I again provided. Based on the rudimentary list that I had and assurances by the SP that he had over 30 years of experience, I obtained the supplies with the expectation that if something would not work or was not a quality product, that a replacement could be obtained. However, as the job went on I was told after the fact if the SP had a problem, but the item was not always replaced. I was willing to try to work through this issue by leaving a list of tasks with accompany supplies, but even that was not successful. I would have overlooked this lack of preparation and communication if the final product was well-done, even acceptable. Unfortunately, that was not the case. When I got home today the bathroom floor was soaking wet. When I cleaned up what I thought was just residue from the job, it became obvious that I had at least one leak in the room. As it turns out, both the seal of the toilet and the joint in the waste pipe for the sink were leaking significant amounts of water. Fortunately, both were controlled by shutting off the valves. Upon further inspection, I found that the newly installed light was crooked, the wall board had not been spackled or smoothed before being painted, the silicone around the base of the shoe molding, toilet and pedestal had gaps or was so heavily applied that it spilled onto the tile, wall and baseboard. The light buzzes and dims, a spacer was in the grout, the grout is uneven and discolored, the tiles are uneven in height and spacing, and the doorframe is not sealed against the tile. To add insult, the newly painted walls and baseboard had been nicked, scratched and scuffed but no effort was made to touch up or repair these items. I discussed these issues with the SP over the phone this evening (Thursday, June 6, 2013), who has offered to fix them, but my lack of confidence in his judgment and decision-making makes me reluctant to trust him to not create greater problems. Case in point, I provided an off-the-shelf flush mechanism that my sister had installed in her toilet and is similar to one that I installed in another toilet in my home. The SP could not make the mechanism work and reverted back to an old-fashioned flapper. Given that we are amateurs and he has over 30 years of experience with both plumbing and tile work, I?m not impressed. This could be overlooked if not for the fact that there were multiple instances of things going wrong on such a simple job. My most significant issue with the work is that the work of a master plumber should not result in such extensive leaks. He told me that he believed that the wax gasket that I bought, with no guidance from him and he confirmed would work for this job, was not the right fit. And yet, he installed it anyway, swears that nothing was leaking when he tested it, then sealed up the toilet and left, only for me to come home and find water all over my new bathroom floor. The same for the drain pipe for the sink, the SP admitted that it leaked when he initially installed it because he was trying to use new PVC pipe with the old metal joint/trap. So instead of replacing the old connector he attempted to fix this with tape. Again, when I came home and tested the new faucet, water leaked all over the floor. When I questioned this decision, the SP stated that he had difficulty seeing under the sink since there was no light bulb in the fixture and he did not have a flashlight. This again causes me concern that someone who supposedly has so many years of experience could not plan for this eventuality and ensure that the appropriate items would be on hand in case these issues arose. Everything that happened required a new trip to the store, and subsequent delay to the project. In addition, what should have been routine items, i.e. spacers and quickset for the tile, plumbers putty, caulk, silicone, threading tape, had to be provided by me, a non-professional. According to the SP, the reason that the grout is uneven and not cleanly applied is the result of me providing the wrong size spacers. Yet, it was never explained to me that there were different sizes and types and how this would impact the tile installation. Needless to say, I would prefer that the plumbing and electrical concerns be addressed by someone else. One option is to take the money that I paid for the Big Deal and apply what is needed to bring in a highly rated contractor with plumbing, electrical and tile experience from the area to correct these problems. I have included photos of the problems I have identified with the job. I apologize, given the lighting and location of these issues, they are difficult to discern.
Description of Work: Update of a small half-bath.

Response from Anderson Construction
Our company had to use sealant on fitting some were old she wanted it that way. Well I tould her don’t go in the bathroom for 36 hour until everything dry. Well that didn’t happen she got home that evening step on the tile that was just sealed and started running water and flushing toilet, the toilet was rebuilt completely. But customer wanted to use her own parts so she had me take it back apart and it was already done. But to make her happy I did exactly what she wanted I tould her that this won’t work. But some people you can’t talk to them they just don’t hear she only hear what she wants. The company replace the ¾ round she wanted us to piece together the old impossible. The sealant was to seal from the tile to the trim and the concrete was so unlevel is wasn’t easy to work with I can go on and on but it not even worth the space, one thing is we give a 5 year warranty and we will come and fix everything and anything. We don’t get paid for the work until we were done there is always going to be a list or punch out list to finish a job. We will always be there for the customer but this customer you can’t work with out of all the people we work for over the years this was the worth one. Reused old trim that she didn’t replace and used old toilet that should have been replace it had ton caulking on it and is she would of stayed out of the bathroom everything would of dried right and if there were any point we would of taken care of it. Plus she didn’t even pay her bill which was 960.00 plus material so our company was Fair. (Keep the money plus the money for material and have someone do the touch up $1,320 material and labor

We found out about Anderson through an Angie's List deal. Mike is hard to communicate with at times - I think he's got so much going on, it seemed to me he had a hard time with scheduling/remembering etc. However - the work that Gerver and Roxie did was amazing. They are so thorough, so efficient, do such quality work. We hired Anderson for several more days of work, specifically requesting Gerver and Roxie.
Description of Work: We had Anderson Construction do drywall repair, wallpaper removal, drywall installation.

All in all we are very happy with the process and the results. Once we understood how much it was going to cost we no longer had to worry about how long the final product would take. The crew that did most of the work (Gerber and Roxanne (sp?)) was meticulous and got things done the right way. Because of the way the pipes for the vanity were placed in the wall, which was not changed, the vanity we had bought had to have the interior shelf modified but the crew handled it well.
Description of Work: Mike and his crew redid one of our bathrooms. They took the walls down to the studs and put up new wall board, tiled the shower, floors, and walls. The also installed a new shower pan, a new vanity, and toilet. The casing around the door was replaced and a new threshold was installed. New lights were installed and a new vent cover as well as a new exhaust vent.

Bought the voucher earlier in July/August timeframe not really knowing when we would be ready to have work completed in Condo. The advertisement stated that I had a whole year to use the voucher. Before any work could be completed we needed to have the unit emptied. Between getting another contractor to pick up junk from unit and suffering a broken ankle, the condo unit could not be ready for the contractor until December 2012. Had difficulty getting in contact with the Contractor at first. When we finally made contact - the Contractor was nice, but complained that the advertisement for DC was not supposed to run when it did which put an extra burden on his company. I was also told that I would need to use my voucher while they were in DC, which meant that I needed to have the work completed by the end of December, not in line with what the voucher advertised. Contractor gave me list of what I would need to purchase to complete the work -- I took his list and bought everything that was required. First day, contractors showed up 30 minutes late. Completed walk through and left condo with them starting their work. They started on re-grouting the tub and walls in the bathroom -- got a call and was told that they would not be able to start on this because they had not brought the correct grouting tool until the next day which put back the start time of this part of the project -- this company states that they rehab bathrooms, why didn't the worker have the right tools to complete this at the time. I told them to start other projects until then -- came into the condo 4 hours into their first day and found that they had only completed the check on the 2 electrical sockets and taken down and put up 1 fan -- which I know that it should have only taken about 10 minutes for the sockets and 45 minutes for the fans (at most). What they didn't complete before putting up the fans was to prime and paint the ceilings around the areas of the fans before installing them, which left me to have to do this after they had been installed when they departed at the end of the project. The impression that I had at this point was not favorable -- but I left them alone to complete their work, hoping that if I didn't micro-manage their work they would get everything completed on my project list. At the end of the project the following items were not completed out of the project which forced me to have to get others to complete this work: 1) Prime and Paint all baseboards, ceilings and walls of Condo. It may seem as though I am very negative about this review, but I believe that if the contractor had a better sense of what his employees were doing with the time that was allotted to them, all the items of the project would have been complete at the end. I believe that the contractor was hoping that I would extend the project out another week, paying the full price so he could make more money on the project -- I found this out when I had to extend the project by 8 hours so they could finish what they were working on. This was my experience with this contractor, you on the other hand might have a better experience.
Description of Work: Bought voucher for 40 hours of General Contractor work for $1870.00. I extended the project by 8 hours which added an extra $490 to the project. Thought that it was a good deal and needed to get some work completed in my Condo before I put the property on the market. Needed the following work completed: 1) Clean and Re-grout the tub and walls in the bathroom; 2) Fix earthquake damage in Living Room and Closet in adjoining bedroom; 3) Required two electrical sockets to be checked for their wiring; 4) Installation of three new ceiling fans to replace old fans; 5) Replace ceiling fixture with new Ceiling light fixture; 6) Fix hole in wall left by removal of old intercom system and sand for priming and painting; 7) fix hole in wall next to window in living room and sand for priming and painting; 8) Spackle and sand the walls and ceilings in all rooms getting them ready to prime and paint; 9) Prime all baseboards, Ceilings and walls of Condo; 10) Paint all baseboards, Ceilings and Walls of Condo; and 11) Fix sealant around toilet..
