I go back and forth between Florida and Virginia, and they've been very understanding about that, when I have to leave. They left some of their stuff here. He's a wonderful guy to work with. He told me he was sending his A Crew and he really did. He sent two guys that were so professional. He's really the best. He's come out here himself just to see how things were doing. They work very, very hard. They're always on time. Mike is wonderful. He always emails me or checks. I feel real comfortable about the two workers that come out. They're really respectful. I like that Mike goes to Home Depot and uses his discount to get me things. I used to have a different company do the deck and I thought they did a good job, but when Anderson did it, I couldn't believe just how pristine it looked. He put some water on there, to show me, and you can see the water just kind of bouncing off of there, because the finish was so good. He left his tools in the garage and some of his stuff on the deck, for when I can come back into town and he can finish the job. He's just a wonderful guy, besides that. I can't say how nice he is. He's very responsive and professional. He's a great guy. I had another company out here to do some work, and he redid his work schedule to accommodate them. That's how nice he is. I'm retired and on a budget, so he's very conscious of that, too.
Description of Work: They're refinishing my deck. They're redoing all the wood around my front door and the windows, on the exterior. They're also refinishing my door that leads to the basement.

The crew arrived early and worked without breaks (including lunch) for the entire eight hours on both days. I went through my list of projects and left it up to them as to which ones to tackle ... to me, not one was more important than another. They took the most difficult one first -- rehabilitation the bathroom in the hallway between the porch and garage, which is used by my pool guests. Heavy rains that had seeped into the hallway and other weather stressors had left the room moldy, with rotting wood, peeling baseboards and stained ceiling tiles. The room looks brand new now, with a new wax gasket on the toilet, mold sanded off the door, wooden baseboard replaced all around the walls and rotted wood replaced on the step-up to the room. The second completed project was to re-attach carpeting on the side of my gazebo where my beagle had torn it off. That was successfully stapled back into place, even though some small chunks of the carpeting were missing. The third completed project involved painting the wall that attaches my all-glass sunroom to the house. I had planned to wallpaper that wall be realized the intense summer sun would strip the wallpaper within a few seasons, so we decided to paint the wall after applying Kilz to the surface to cover areas where heavy rain had seeped in and discolored the wall, which was covered simply with plywood. The fourth completed project, caulking my windows, was not done to my satisfaction, but it was corrected on the last day of the project. Some windows were skipped and others had the caulk sloppily applied. And, finally, I had dry wall tape pulling off of the wall in my bathroom and hallway. That project was only partially completed because the humidity was so high on the day that the tape was re-applied that it could not dry before time ran out on the 35-hour Big Deal limit. All in all, I was extremely impressed with the dedication and punctuality of the two-man crew, their knowledge of issues involved with the variety of projects that I asked them to complete, and the quality of the work (except for the sloppy caulking, which was easily repaired.) I would use them again in a heart-beat and I would recommend Anderson Construction to anyone who asked. In fact, I have bought another day's work of this crew's time to complete the dry wall project and the other undone project, which was to re-attach the wallpaper in my living room, which has started to peel away from the wall.
Description of Work: I had the talents and skills of two contractor-workers for a combined total of 35 hours, which translated into two days for two workers and a half-day for one worker, and they worked on and completed several projects on my "to do" list, including rehabilitating a restroom for use by pool guests, re-caulking all of my windows, re-attaching the carpet in my gazebo and painting one wall in my sunroom. One project (dry wall reattachment) was only half-finished because time ran out on the Big Deal 35-hour limit.

I met Mike through his Best Buy offer of 16 hours of work for $549. As a result, we did not have to discuss price. Mike called on 18 June and explained that, because the project they were working on took longer than anticipated, he planned to send George on the 19th and Levi on the 20th. Rain canceled the 19th. Mike called again and we agreed on 20 June. Levi and George rang my doorbell at 0815 on Friday the 20th. They finished at 1530. They put the drop cloth down on the concrete floor of the porch and George started prepping. Two coats of paint on both the porch and the railing. Levi fixed the shelf and hung the shade. He didn't realize the shade could pull from the top or the bottom but I wouldn't have known. He had a bit of trouble restringing the drape but figured it out in no time and had it fixed. Levi then helped George finish the painting and installing and hanging the flag. I am very pleased and happy with the work Levi and George did (as will my HOA). Their work ethic was exemplary and professional. They cleaned up after themselves. I wouldn't have known they were here except for the finished product. FYI I live in a townhouse.

The offer was as follows: $1,499 for a Handyman or General Contractor for a Week1499.00 1 Order Number:1288560 Ordered On:May 26, 2014. I was asked for my phone number on 27 May 2014. I was not contacted until 12 Jun 2014 at which time I said roughly what I wanted done and that I would send a detailed explanation. Unfortunately, I was unable to complete that before I was contacted again and told that they wanted to start the next day 17 Jun 2014. I said that I could not support that and the reply was that they were starting then and that if I could not have the replacement trim available that they would get it a Home Depot. I got up at 0400 the next morning and got the material out and placed in on my front walk. Only one workman showed up on the next day. He tore off the first dormer completely by the time I got home from work. He mentioned that most of the wood was fine. So I agreed with him to put it back on and just replace the rotted boards. The next day two workmen showed up and when I got home they had removed all the rotted areas that I requested be replaced. Then final day they told my son about noon that they had to leave at 1 pm because it was only a 35 hour ticket and that they had replaced and caulked all the rotted trim. Then today while working in my yard my son points out to me that they left a ladder. Shortly after that the owner of the company comes by to pick up the ladder and ask how it went. I say ok and he informs me that this offer was not for doing high work, because of the risk involved. This was precisely why I hired them and at no time before this did he mention that this was an issue. Then he asks me to fill out an Angie's List Review. I say that I will do it online which is what I am doing now.
Description of Work: Replaced rotted trim around a dormer, one board on another dormer, one small board on a porch soffit, one large piece of trim on the bottom front face of a second story overhang.

The coupon that was purchased by the customer doesn't cover the workers doing work on the steep roof, but we went ahead and did it anyway. We performed all work that was needed to do the job, and we finished in a timely matter. I felt that the workers were punctual and did the work on time, and the price was not controlled by us, the customer purchased the coupon. We enjoyed the hospitality and enjoyed doing the work, we hope that the customer will change his mind on the grade that was given because we met all the customers needs.

The service turned out fine. They completed the job in about 2 weeks. There were additional fees for the types of materials we chose for the project. We were aware of the charges beforehand. Mr. Andersen seemed to be disorganized, but his 2 workers did a fabulous job. We discussed with Mike some specifics that were missing in the Big Deal write up. He did take our advice and re-wrote the deal. Scheduling was not an issue and they were here every day until the project was completed.

The work was done well and they cleaned up well. My only issue was that the deal was for five man days and they brought three people each day, which in my opinion could have been accomplished by two people each day. Consequently, I owed them an additional man day of $920.

I?m writing on February 7, 2014, after removing Mike Anderson from my condominium in the middle of a bathroom renovation yesterday morning. Working with Mike has been a nightmare. I own a 650-square foot, 1-bedroom unit in an old condominium complex built in the 1940s, typical of many old buildings in my area: brick, sturdy buildings. I wanted to renovate my bathroom on a small budget, and I had no experience with bathroom remodelers. To protect myself, I joined Angie?s List. On August 23, 2013, I purchased a Big Deal with Anderson Construction for $5,999 for ?a complete remodel on a standard 5'X8' bathroom including demolition of old bathroom and labor and materials.? My bathroom is approximately 5? by 7?. The deal included a materials allowance of $1,600.00. From the beginning, things seemed a little off to me. Mike came out to take measurements, but I was never provided them. I was never provided a written estimate of what the entire project would cost. I was never presented with a contract to sign. He seemed to be very disorganized. In fact, at one point I had to re-measure the bathtub area myself and give him the measurement. I also had to re-send him measurements he himself took. A lot of communication from him was via phone and text message. I was getting nervous and eventually started insisting that he communicate via email so that I would have at least some things in writing. Just before Thanksgiving, I had had enough. He tried providing information on items via text message on the morning of November 27, 2013. I told him to email me the information, with pricing. Later that day I emailed him and said: ?Mike, I am extremely frustrated with your refusal to provide me or the [vanity, toilet, and fixture supplier] and [tile supplier] representatives with measurements, provide me via email pricing on options for the tub, shower door, window, and other items, provide me with a written estimate, and otherwise fail to respond to my emails and insist only on talking on the phone. I am getting my money back from Angie's List, which has my request for a refund.? That day he wrote back and said, ?I sorry but I did text you the item that you needed, and our company will be there and come out, I just need a measurement so the order is right, this is not a problem, I have it ready to go for you.? This is typical of the type of communication I?d receive ? not on point and not entirely understandable. He thereafter sent a barrage of largely unintelligible text messages that evening and the next day, Thanksgiving, discussing measurements and pricing. Unfortunately, I did not stick to my guns. I later canceled my Big Deal refund request and pressed on with Mike. I was close to having everything selected, and I felt I had come so far that it would be a shame to start over with someone new. I had read other Angie?s List reviews about communication issues with Mike and figured that?s what I was dealing with. It was frustrating, but it didn?t feel that anything more ominous was afoot. Fast forward to late last week. Mike informs me that he and his crew will start the job on Monday, February 3, 2014 (four days ago). I was caught a bit off-guard, but eager to get on with the project. I still no written, itemized estimate or contract. We did some email back-and-forth. I had to dig up an old email he had sent, and a supplier?s invoice, to figure out for myself the final pricing for all of my materials selections. After adding everything up and subtracting the $1,600.00 Big Deal materials allowance, I wrote a check to Mike for $5,456.88. At that point, my total out-of-pocket costs for this project was $11,455.88. I left the check for Mike to pick up on the first day of the job. Admittedly, there were some tough aspects to this project. We knew there was mold behind in and behind tiles and concrete walls to deal with in this old building. Mike had said he had worked in buildings like this and in fact in my complex (which I later confirmed with him is not true). Based on conversations with Mike, I had a vague sense that there would be some increased costs associated with this. Without any written estimate or contract, exactly how much I didn?t know. On the first day, he told me over the phone that additional labor and materials would cost an additional $4,900.00. This shocked me, and I told him I needed everything itemized. I was scared that he would keep increasing the costs on me, and asked at one point in exasperation whether this project would put me out $20,000.00, which to me seemed astronomical. He said no. He sent an email that somewhat resembled a contract with the $4,900.00 additional amount late on Tuesday, February 4, 2014. If I paid this amount, I?d be out $16,355.88, with costs potentially rising. I wrote him back the next day, demanding to know what the final project would cost (i.e., an estimate). His initial response did not include a final project cost. I responded: ?Tell me, in writing, how much this project is going to cost me. Your response must have a dollar figure in it.? He responded to say that it would be ?another 4781.00.? If I were to pay that additional $4781.00, my total out-of-pocket costs would have amounted to $21,136.88. This was getting out of control. Over the phone the night of February 5, 2014, Mike insisted that the concrete and mold and plumbing were all surprises that increased the cost. I told him there was no way it could possibly cost that much for a small bathroom. We argued back and forth. Finally he said he would cap the project at $20,000.00 ? again, an amount that seemed to me astronomical. With no background in remodeling, however, I didn?t know for sure. A realtor I spoke with that night, however, was shocked at the price, as was a friend who is in the real estate business, and other friends I?d spoken with. That night Mike emailed me another ?contract? stating that ?the bathroom is not to go past the 20,000 mark and what was paid out is 5999.00 coupon and 5456.88 Paid amount 11,455 balance 8545.00 and the Material is also included.? After further arguing with him on the phone, I emailed back to confirm that I did not agree to the 20,000.00 figure he was now proposing. To get some perspective on reasonable project costs, I also sent out a message to an email list of owners in my complex explaining what was going on and asking for people to send me total project costs from those who had done bathroom renovations. None were anywhere close to $20,000.00. One owner did a ?full gut job? (?if it was with in the confines of the bathroom it was completely removed and rebuilt?) in 2012 for ?just over $9,300.? Another said, ?We gutted out our bathroom and re-modeled November 2013 for $8000. The contractor we used quoted $5000 for labor - no materials. We spent $3000 for materials/finishes.? Another reported, ?We completely gutted our bathroom and redid everything and I think it cost around $10-$12k.? Another ?complete remodel that included tearing out an old bathfitters shower? totaled approximately $6,000.00 ($3,500.00 in labor and $2,500.00 in materials). Another resident remodeled the bathroom for $4,000.00. All of this convinced me that what Mike was asking was outrageous. I called him that night to instruct him to stop working and leave the job site. I reiterated this in a follow-up email. The next day (yesterday), I had to take a day of vacation from work to deal with all this. After an early morning appointment, I returned to my condominium mid-morning to find Mike still there (although his materials and equipment had been removed and loaded onto his vehicle). He wanted to negotiate and offered to finish the job for $2,800 ? down from the combined 9,681.00 he said it would take the day before (or down from the $8,544.12 that would bring my all-in cost to $20,000.00); in a subsequent email, he said he would finish the job for $3,900.00. I asked him to leave. After all this, I began questioning everything. Mike had obtained the tub. I saw that it was a Bootz brand-tub ? one of the least expensive available. The exact model he obtained, a 4.5-foot tub, model number 011-2302-00, go for under $200.00 at stores such as Home Depot. He charged me $735.00. I was only provided a receipt for the tub after repeatedly asking him for it. The receipt he eventually provided today is dated yesterday, February 6, 2014, even though the tub had been ordered and delivered well before then. Without an itemized list of materials and pricing, I feel I need verify for myself all costs, such as total costs for tiling and the bathroom window. I'm trying to pry them from Mike. So far, I have only the tub invoice. The only amount I trust as being accurate is the one for the bathroom supplier because an invoice for that was given directly to me. In retrospect, I should have followed my instinct and gone through with canceling the Big Deal I purchased. I should have taken the other Anderson Construction negative reviews more seriously and ignored the positive ones. I should have surveyed my community first and gone with a recommended contractor. Now I?m left with no working bathroom and need to hire someone else that I trust to finish the job.

Mike came in and took measurements. It is a small bathroom, 5x4. He told me how much tile to get, which I thought might be more than necessary. He told me we would have to take the trim off to do the floor. The other thing that was specified was that to remove the toilet would be an additional cost. I said that was fine, I undestood that. The final bill had somehow increased to about $1200. He said the tile was expensive tile and I said I went to the place he told me to to pick it up. He said it was 7-8 dollars more per tile. He then said he had to do an additional 5 hours of work with two people. I told him they could not even fit two people in the bathroom. He said his going rate was $150/hour. So I called another company and asked what they charge per hour for labor and they said $55. I was just totally frustrated with the whole thing. I said if they had told me just because I was going to put new trim down, I would have said no. I said I am deducting 10 tiles that I did not need to order. They did a nice job, the work was good, but there was no way it should have cost me that much money.

The workers came out to remove the toilet, the base was not apart of the coupon. I told him $120 per person is what it was for the plumbing part. Also installing the toilet was not apart of the coupon and purchasing the material was not apart of the coupon. The owner of the company had to come out to bring all material, this coupon did not cover all of that. Not only was two people on the job site the owner was also getting all of the materials. We negotiated the price and told customer just pay me what you want. The customer seemed like a really nice person, until it came to the pricing and then he changed completely. So each customer, I explained to them how the coupon works. He was subtracting tile off and that was for the cuts. Anderson Construction ending up paying for it. I hope in the future he will change his mind on the grade because we work for all we got. Thank you for having our company out, call us back if you need anything else.

Anderson Construction communicated via email, AngiesList message, phone calls and even text messaging while we tried to arrange an estimate date. I appreciated the flexibility in arranging this meeting but the communication itself was a little confusing as to when or whether or not we would be meeting. When we did meet, the contractor was very vague about potential additional costs and what would/would not be covered by the deal. I was also surprised to learn that the tiny bathroom being renovated would have already maxed out the minimums being covered by the deal. Anything I asked about - even permits - were not covered by the deal. (Most of these extra costs were things I had to prompt for, not things that he brought up on his own.) No formal estimate was drawn up so I did not have a good sense of how much this was going to cost. Shortly after the consultation, I received a number of blurry pictures of other work and no further information about cost. The contact information I was given for follow-up was misspelled and unclear as to who was associated with a showroom. It seems as though I could go with a different contractor and not save any money by using this Big Deal for bathroom renovation.

Due to the age of the house and not being able to see the things that needed to be repaired we could not give a solid price, but we did give an hourly rate that would cover the unforeseen things that we were going to run into. We were going to incorporate the coupon into the project to cover a lot of the expenses that were beyond the coupon rate. The owner enjoyed coming out to talk with the customer and we're hoping to do the work, but for the extra costs that were involved the customer said they couldn't afford it at the time, but would give a call in the future. The contractor was giving the customer the lowest rate. We hope that you will change your mind on the grade.

Great! Including copper pipe replacement was able to handle all work.
Description of Work: Remove wall on - master bath jacuzzi - replace fixtures and install new plumbing and replace tile.
The job went well over budget in time and money, but most of that was due to the age of the house and the initial state of the kitchen. The previous owner had done a lot of work poorly, and so much had to be redone. For example, the old back porch had been enclosed, but the sloping porch floor had not been leveled. Given this and other unforeseen conditions, the project ran over its financial and temporal budget and ended up costing about $30k and 5 months. However, Mike's carpenter/plumber/electrician was responsive to the changing situation and did his best to maintain both forward progress and a livable home while the project was underway. Although I had to do most of the shopping for materials myself (included in the $30k), I was most pleased with the skill and craftsmanship of the work. I now have an enviably modern kitchen that balances with the old charm of the house.
Description of Work: I have a townhouse in the Takoma/Brightwood area, built in 1928. I bought the house in 2010 as a foreclosure and have been living in it and renovating it since then. I had Anderson Construction renovate the kitchen, which required changing the floor plan, moving walls, building a bar and a closet, re-wiring, updating plumbing, hanging cabinets, and installing tile floors.

I have been trying to schedule a date for Anderson Construction to replace the tile in my bathroom since November 23 - to no avail. My coupon expires January 21, 2014. Can you help me out?

Response from Anderson Construction
Contractor came out to do the work, and we had to put a leveler down on the floor, and put tile at a diamond, which was not covered on the coupon. Also moved toilet, cabinets, pedestal, and threshold, and reinstall everything. The money from the coupon was $444 covered $1.27/ square foot. Contractor went past in the square foot and additional work and additional time was not even payed for and we ended up with bad grade and did five days of work. It had taken almost $2000 in labor time for the customer to come up short, so we went in the hole. So this review is not a strong review towards the company. It would take an earthquake to change this grade, this lady is impossible to work for, but thanks for having us out, we enjoyed going in the hole.

Mr. Anderson came to see our bathroom and told us that it was larger than the coupon allowed, that he would probably need a jack hammer to remove concrete in it, and that it would cost about $6,000 more, or $12,000 in total. That was way out of our budget and I don't want a jackhammer inside of my house:)

Bought 40 hours worth of contracting services via Angie's list. When the contractor came, I asked for an estimate, was told "lets just see how it goes" Got an estimate to complete the job once the "deal" hours were over. Total job cost was more than twice the "deal cost" I am not saying I overpaid, just that contractor never provided a written quote until well into the job. Not sure that's even legal in Virginia. Would not buy one of these from Angie's list again, would not use contractor again.

The reason it wasn't written was because we gave her a day rate, and then we had written an sign order estimate for her for the work to be continued and agreed on price and continued working. Thank you for having us out to do the work, and hope you use again in the future.

Anderson took down my old deck, built a new one to my requests, amended my existing fence with a new gate and put up a new fence on another part of the property. Everything was done very well and I like the result so much I used them again for another fence project later. I'd gladly use them again. Very easy to work with and listened to what I wanted and made suggestions that made everything easier.
