Service went very well. They were professional and did a good job. Any issues were resolved quickly.
It took about five weeks from the time of the order to then schedule the install. Several weeks after the order, I received a product color sample from the factory which Signature requested that I sign/approve and send back to them. I accidently left/lost the sample at Home Depot. Signature had no problem sending me another. Installation was finally scheduled and three installers came out for three days. I was again impressed. They were professional, friendly, and experienced. After watching them work, I then understood why they call it recrafting. The product is really and quot;craftedand quot; by way of measurement and on-site custom trimming to exactly fit over your existing cabinet frames. The custom cuts they did were amazingly perfect - around corners, the crown molding etc. Unfortunately, some panels were missing in the order delivery and an incorrect cabinet door was made but Signature promptly reordered and reinstalled the correct panels/door as quickly as they could. They also came back to finish some detailed work with filling in seams and wiping off some glue smears etc.
Alex communicated with me throughout the entire process and apologized for their factory mistake. Another mistake they made was in my favor; the factory provided self closing drawers which we did not want to pay extra for but we certainly enjoy and love the feature.
Overall, we are extremely pleased with out kitchen recraft transformation. Signature Woodcrafters offers a quality product, experience, and a systematic approach to the entire project.
The overall experience could be described as apprehensive, tedious, fun, frustrating, long, dirty, exciting, fun, etc. However you want to describe it, we are very happy with the results. My wife's wish was to make her old, smaller kitchen appear new and more spacious. I had always wanted a coffee bar, and I told her the best way to make her kitchen appear larger was to get me out of the one corner, where I sat with my computer and a small table to my side. The worst part of the entire experience was using the dining/living room as a kitchen. Started out kind of fun, like camping, but Donna soon tired of doing dishes in her bathroom sink. But, for prospective customers, the wait was worth it.
Our original cabinets were approximately 25 years old but in really good condition, so I was looking into refacing, rather than replacing. I ran across Signature when I researched 'recrafting' rather than 'refacing'. I was intrigured by the recrafting so I called and set an appointment with Alex Van Nuys, the designer. During Alex's visit and telling her of my plans to remove some cabinets and make the coffee bar, and my desire to move some of the old cabinets to other spots in the kitchen, as we were replacing old microwave in 'hutch' type cabinet to an over-the-range microwave. One thing Signature didn't do is move old cabinets around and try to make them fit in the scheme. Alex suggested she run our estimate to include recrafting as well as replacing with all new cabinets. This turned out to be only a couple thousand dollars more for brand new cabinets and knowing everything fit into just where we wanted it.
Alex provided me with drawings of what our new kitchen would be like and between me, my wife, and Alex, some changes were made along the way. To keep the symmetry, Alex suggested a 6and quot; shelving unit next to one of the corner cabinets so that the space to the window was consistent with the space between the other corner cabinet and the window. Remember, this is an old house and the dimensions were not symmetrical. This shelving unit turned out to be one of our favorite things. On the side wall that has the open area on the end, Alex chose a two-door cabinet that angled to the opening and on that angle is another door to the same cabinet. This is another favorite.
We visited the Signature showroom in Haymarket and my wife and Alex teetered back and forth on just what we wanted in cabinet sizes, hardware and all. We also chose the granite we would use for the counter tops based on samples that Alex had in the showroom. Another visit to our house by Alex confirmed the choice of cabinet color.
Between the time of actual work starting, Alex had us go to a stone yard and look at granite. While looking at millions (not really) slabs, we changed our minds and went with a lighter granite for the main counters, but stuck with the choice we had made for the coffee bar. Little did we know that we'd kind of have to do the same thing later, as it was too early to reserve any slabs. And we were told to keep in mind that each lot looks different, so at the time of our final selection, we may not be able to find a slab that looks exactly like the one we liked now. That's exactly what happened. There was only one lot to choose from, and my wife wasn't sure it would look as good as what she had originally anticipated.
The guys arrived to demo the kitchen and were done in less than a day. It was a close call in moving the refrigerator from kitchen into the dining room, but Bobby, Steve and Jack squeaked it through without a scratch. They were careful with the old cabinets, which remember, were in good shape, and piled them outside for a friend of mine to come and pick up for use in his home. Bobby Kemp, the Project Manager, was great in working with me in scheduling our other independent trades to get in and do their work. Following demo, I was able to squeeze in the painting, basic electrical restructure and window and door work, as well as the subfloor preparation work.
The tile backsplash was next and was an interesting project. Signature subbed to a really good tile company, and we were very impressed with the work and the workers and how conscientious and adaptible they were to our desires.
Forgot to mention the subbed plumber who installed our sink and the faucet that we had purchased at Lowes. Larry too was great. Being that our house was 50 years old, there was much old electrical and plumbing to deal with and Larry and Bobby worked together to get the sink and dishwasher installed.
We had LED under cabinet lighting installed and it adds to the already beautiful tile backsplash immensely. We hung pendant lights over our bar and that finished off the project.
There were a couple minor issues during the project, all of which Bobby was right on top of and satisfed to our satisfaction with a smile. If I were in his shoes and had to put up with our pickiness, I would have been really frustrated. I guess that's why he does what he does and I do what I do. :) I have to mention the fact that Bobby and his crew came from a long distance to arrive at our place by 8:00 each morning to get things going. All areas were cleaned up and we couldn't have been happier with the results.
The kitchen has received RAVE reviews from family, neighbors and friends, and we couldn't be more pleased. I'm just excited to see how my wife has it decorated for the holidays. We succeeded in getting me out of the corner and as I type this, I'm sitting at my new location on 'the other side' of the wall at our beautiful coffee (and computer) bar.
I know I have probably missed some points here, but I just want to offer our thanks to Alex, Bobby, Steve, Beth and Signature for a great experience.
In regards to the quality of their work, I gave them a and quot;Band quot; because most of their work looks great with high quality. We asked for a few touch-ups which they did without any hesitation. There are two reasons why I gave them a and quot;Band quot;. (1) The stain on one of the landing tread pieces does not match the rest of the pieces by a noticeable degree. They had agreed to restain that piece at our final walk-through, but this was before we noticed the major project with the landing tread that needed the groove for the flooring planks. Once that issue came up, I just wanted to get that solved quickly, so I didn't push the issue with the staining that was off. I could tell by the limited communication the company was giving me, that they were very displeased that the had to replace the railing and I resolved myself to having to accept that disappointing stain color in order to be able to move on in the project and get it completed. (2) The other problem is that the pickets underneath the railings are not all perfectly in line with each other. Some of them are off by nearly 1/2and quot; (I measured it). I asked their technician about this and he said that it isn't unusual for the pickets to be off by as much as 1/8and quot; so he didn't think it was necessary to replace the handful of pickets that were not in line. However, I have spoken to others in the field and they say that if the pickets were off by that much in new home construction, the railing would have been rejected by the homebuilder and would have to be rebuilt. So, I wonder if I was being dealt with in the most honest way.
I am still giving them an and quot;Aand quot; overall because they did what they said they would do for the price we agreed to, they were professional and prompt, maintained good communication throughout the project. Aven though I had paid in full before we noticed the problem with the landing treads they still came back and replaced those parts for no extra charge. That proves to me that they are trust-worthy and would do a good job for someone else.
All in all, this was a fabulous project with Signature's great team and we are very pleased.
As for the actual work, the two individuals who completed the installation were very hard workers, and willing to answer questions whenever I had them. They kept the work area quite neat, and vacuumed when they were done.
I found this company to be extremely professional and responsive. Their commitment to customer service was obvious. They work together to solve all the issues. I would recommend them for other services, but not specifically for Recrafting or Refacing.
For my experience recrafting and refacing cabinets is very, very difficult. it’s never going to look quite like a brand new cabinet. I’ve also found that it’s not worth the money, since there are problems that are almost impossible to solve:
- 1- Measurement: It is extremely difficult to measure the cabinet door and front drawer above, as well as align them correctly the first time around. It’s a time consuming process.
- 2- Different lots of the same stain: If a door or a front drawer are not the same width one of them has to be re-done. The problem is that different lots of the same stain are never exactly the same. This has happened to be three times: I have different cider stain colors on certain doors and front drawers. I was told several times that different parts of the wood stain differently, which is true, but using a single lot for the stain reduces the differences to the point where one cannot notice them.
- 3- The hinges: was another issue difficult issue to solve. Cabinet frames are covered with matching 1/4and quot; solid hardwood, and because of that, the standard hinge does not fit properly. This was very hard to fix. They used an extra long screw in an angle direction. I really don’t know for how long the hinges will last.
Additionally, there were some bumps in the road like there are with all jobs, but the impressive thing is how the Signature folks handled these bumps. They were always accommodating, always more than fair and always made it right. Their commitment to customer service was obvious.
I highly recommend them.
Having received no designs for final approval and no charges to my credit card, I called Signature the end of April and was told that the salesperson no longer worked for the company and they would have to find out what had happened with the job. I was called back the next day, by the original salesperson, who did indeed still work for the company, but as a contractor and not a direct employee. He confirmed the measurement of the fixed shelf height and confirmed 13 May as the installation date.
A week later, the salesman called back to report that in the personnel status turnover, my contract had in fact been misplaced and no one had been working on it. They would be unable to construct and install the cabinet as scheduled, but would have to delay until 20 May. Certainly, this was very upsetting, after having waited 8 weeks and completing preliminary electrical work in the space, that would have to be concealed for the gathering at our home. Drawings were sent to us finally on May 6, and some design changes were requested. Having tried to rush the job, the construction had already started on the cabinet without design approval. They asked us to review pictures to see if the product would suffice without the design changes. We reviewed the pictures, but still requested the changes be made in the flutes and plinths.
The cabinet was delivered and installed on 20 May, but the installing cabinet maker had not been given the new design and built the cabinet with the wrong flute and plinth configuration. As a result, the cabinet had to be left unfinished and new material ordered. The company was to call me the next day to set up a completion date the following week, but after not having heard anything, I called on 25 May to determine the status. I was told that the material had been ordered, but they had forgotten to call and set up a time for installation. They would be unable to deliver/install until 3 June, which is when the originally scheduled 13 May project was finally completed.
