Our contact with Jim was professional from beginning to end. We called and scheduled an appointment for an estimate (not easy as we both work but Jim was accommodating), the estimate was clear, and there was no pressure to make a decision immediately on the work. However, I was very comfortable with his professionalism and how he answered my questions, so we got our job put on his schedule immediately. I think we had to wait a few weeks to get on the schedule, but this as not emergency work so that was fine. I felt the price was very fair for all of the work we needed done, which included supplies for the new shelving and wood for the molding. The work was completed exactly as scheduled. The molding work looks beautiful, the cabinet doors now close and the doors no longer stick. However, what I had described to Jim about how we wanted the cabinets done was, to be honest, not very clear, and my husband was not happy with the the final design (he was not present for the estimate). Jim came back out and changed them, just charging for the extra materials, and we are both very happy with the end result. We will definately use his services again!
Description of Work: We had multiple small jobs that we did not have the expertise or time to complete. These included taking apart prior cabinets above a new larger refrigerator (the doors would no longer open as the fridge is taller), making and installing new shelving to replace the cabinets, making and installing custom molding around bottom of the kitchen cabinets (we had had granite countertops installed and there was now a space between the floor and the cabinets as they had to level them), fixing some cabinet doors which would not close properly, and leveling a door.

Jim and his office staff (his wife) were very professional and a joy with which to work. His prices are pricey but you can trust him with your home. Jim will show up on time, get the work done promptly, do a good job, and stand behind his work.

The things we needed he couldn’t do. When I called up to arrange for the appointment I specifically said what I needed and I don’t think the message got passed to him. He had no clue when he got here. I told him what I wanted and he said I don’t do any of those. I thought it was a waste of both of our time. He was very nice but what we needed he couldn’t do. The scope of what he can do is very limited.

I attempted to just get an estimate for some exterior caulking work to my property. The woman on the phone stopped me mid sentence and advised that they do not do exterior work on the 2nd or 3rd floor of a property. Not sure how these guys have such great ratings if they are unwilling to get on a ladder....

We do apologize if we cut you off, but we do try to not waste customers time if we can not do the job. At the time you called, we did not do higher ladder work due to insurance issues, and the type of handyman jobs we accepted. We were so busy, we had to limit the jobs we took. However, we have good news! Due to popular demand, we expanded and now accept more types of handyman jobs and do much more ladder work, including work on higher levels. Therefore we hope you'll give us a ring next time you need a home project done!

Jim was quick and cleaned up the area when he was finished. Based on this experience, he's my Go-To Handyman.
Description of Work: Jim was on time and very professional for the estimate and installation date. I had visited the big stores to purchase and have installed a storm door. Neither vendor was responsive, reasonable or complete (for the installation). Jim came out for the estimate and provided all requirements to include painting. All I had to do was purchase a door and some paint. He did the rest, including picking up the door at the store.

This is the second time we have had David Harris from "Jim the Handyman" out to do work on our home. This time he fabricated and installed three hand rails and ballisters on two of our back stoops. Davis is very thorough and very conscientious about his work. It is of very high quality. This time he ran into a problem but quickly figured out how to solve it, went and got the additional materials and completed the job. We have a couple of more jobs that need to be done and you can be sure we are going to have David return to do them.

The appointment was delayed due to so much rain lately, but otherwise the job went very well. Polite, professional, and a reasonable rate. Roz at the office called to remind us of the appointment, and is great about following up if you have a question.
Description of Work: Repaired several rotten boards in the wooden siding in our home. Estimator was professional and polite, and ended up being the person who returned to do the work. The two workmen did a great job & cleaned up any debris, etc. They were also really nice to my kids who were home at the time.

Based upon their excellent Angie's List and Better Business Bureau ratings, I contacted Jim the Handyman to complete several repair jobs on our sunroom. I was very pleased with the professionalism and positive attitudes at all phases of my experience. Roz, the office manager, immediately arranged for one their employees (Randy) with years of experience in sunroom construction to give me an itemized estimate. Randy arrived on time and explained how he would fix the problems. Once my husband and I agreed to move forward, Roz scheduled the work for the following week. Again, Randy arrived right on time with an assistant and got right to work. They tackled the smaller jobs first, before moving on to the more demanding insulation replacement job. After they were finished, Randy showed me everything they'd done before submitting the bill. We're very happy with this experience, especially with the fact that they ensured the person they sent us had specific experience in sunroom construction. This increased our level of confidence immensely. Based upon this experience, we'll be sure to call Jim the Handyman for other jobs around our home.
Description of Work: Repair warped Trex panel on deck; replace corroded handrail hardware; replace locks and plane door under sunroom; and replace some insulation panels under sunroom then install pressure-treated plywood to seal off and hold in place.

Well to say that it went anything less than outstanding would just not be fair to David or to Jim the Handyman. When we have other jobs that it what they do, you can be sure we will contact them! While I can't speak for others at Jim's, I can tell you that David Harris is an outstanding craftsman. He knows the trade and goes out of his way to make sure you are satisfied with the job! He is so good that we have asked to have him back for a second job. We submitted a work request to Angie's list and the next day we got a call from Roz, Jim's wife, and we were able to schedule the first visit for an estimate that same week. Roz told us David would be on site between 9 and 11 each day and he was always here on time. There is no question that David knows the trade. He comes in does his work, cleans up any "mess" and is very cheerful and friendly.
Description of Work: We had a hand rail post replaced, two side rail and one hand rail added to a stoop, a shower deck re-belugas and some sidewalk pavers reset.

We hired Jim to install a new front door for our home. Our entire experience, from start to finish, was a pleasure. Jim's wife responded to every call within 24 hrs, Jim was punctual for the estimate (and patient with my screaming children) and he did an outstanding job installing the door. I followed Jim's recommendations for the type of door and locks, and it looks sensational. I was concerned that the installation would damage our recently repainted living room walls. However, Jim was able to remove the old door and replace the molding with no damage whatsoever. We left a key for Jim, and he completed the work while we were away. Everything was done perfectly and the house was left reasonably clean and tidy. What a pleasure to work with a true professional.

After perusing some of his reviews on Angie?s List and speaking with my neighbor (who had work done by Jim), I asked the mustachioed handyman to come over and provide an estimate for a repair of my sidelight, siding, and interior wall. We noticed some damage in these areas when we purchased the house and wanted to get it repaired before the winter months. I scheduled the estimate after work, which was very convenient as I have to remain gainfully employed to pay for the services. Jim showed up on time and provided a thorough inspection of the area. During the inspection, Jim even asked if I am handy with a paintbrush, trying to save a few bucks. I liked that. I mean I?m no Picasso, but I did a heck of a lot of finger painting in school and was confident that could finish up the job if Jim got me off to a good start. Jim wrote up the ticket and I was pleased that he uses a bottom-line-pricing policy, rather than using the per-hour-plus-materials method of this competition. You know what you pay for and don?t need to worry about surprises. Anyways, with price in hand, I scheduled for Jim to come out and do the work. There was a bit of juggling here and there due to the Biblical rainstorm that prevented Jim from working outside, but Roz was very flexible and came up with an alternate date. As with the initial estimate, Jim showed up on time on the date of service and was courteous and pleasant with plenty of pearly whites showing underneath his brushbroom. He was with his son Mike and they brought all the tools and handyman bric-a-brac to get the job done. Both Taylors went right to work and in under an hour were finished and ready to show me the result. Overall, I was impressed by the quality of work and time it took to complete the task. So bottom line ? yes I would use Jim again for similar work and I will continue to recommend him to my friends/colleagues. Jim is top rated on Angie?s List for a reason. A final note - Jim is quite pet-friendly. It must be the matching whiskers, but my cat Siobhan A. Feline took quite a liking to him!

The gentleman that came out for the estimate was punctual and professional. He quoted a price of $1100 for the two rooms. I told him that I thought the price was high, and I would be getting other estimates. The next day Jim's Handyman's office called and asked if I still wanted the work to be done. I told them that the price was high and that I had been quoted a much lower price ($650). The office person told me that she had a crew that had a job fall through and they would do the job for $650, as long as they could start right away. I raced home to open the door--the two workman came in, looked around and then said they couldn't finish the work in an afternoon and passed on the job. I would've never come home had I thought that they weren't going to complete the work. I ended up using the another painter at a cost of $600-- he did a great job. I had several estimates--this company's quote was $350.00 over the next lowest bid. They may do good work, but they are very expensive.

These guys are fantastic. I truly think they are the most reliable and honest people you can use in the Northern VA area - and as a new home owner, I've used quite a few, Basically, I had to call them to repair some damage that was likely done when I had carpeting installed on an old staircase, plus a few other odd jobs around the house. They showed up on time, gave me a very reasonable quote, and did all their work quickly a few days later. I wasn't even too worried about leaving them unsupervised. I highly recommend using them, and while I hope my house doesn't need it, I would absolutely use Jim the Handyman again in a heartbeat.

We had a rotted-out wood overhang over the door to our house. Called and requested the company give us an estimate, which they did within two days. We were able to schedule the work within two weeks. Capenters showed up promptly and had it replaced with 1 1/2 days work. The carpentry work was so good that a contractor neighbor wanted the contact info for the carpenters so he could use them on a job,. Would definitely recommend them and plan on using them again for other repair work.
Description of Work: We had a rotted-out wood overhang over the door to our house. Carpenters repalced the entire 4' x 5' overhang, attached it to the brick front of the house, installed supporting pillars and bolted them to the concrete stoop in front of the door. Shingled the overhang and painted everything.

I called Jim who showed up and gave me an estimate. He was friendly and nice enough to walk through my new townhouse and look for anything else he could fix while he was there. About a week later, a technician showed up to do the work. It was all done well, promptly, and to my specifications. The final bill was a little (around 15-20 dollars) over the estimate, but the cost was still reasonable compared to other handyman services I reviewed. I'd use Jim again in the future. Update: I'm sad to have to update this report. Starting around February, I noticed the the exterior door was warped and cracked. In March, I finally called Jim to see if they could come take a look a the door for repairs. The woman who answered the phone became very hostile and aggressive with me after I reported my issue, telling me there was no way that they did the work, and challenged me to find a receipt. I felt I was being treated in a extremely unprofessional manner, so I simply said thank you and hung up. I really thought Jim's was one of the better handyman services in the Northern VA area, but being open to criticism is key to just about any profession. I was calling in hopes of working with Jim to have him fix my door - not demanding my money back or anything like that. I doubt I will use them again in the future - what a shame.

I had Jim come out and quote me on 4 jobs. One of them was simple and he pointed out I could do it myself. The other was some caulking, which I thought I could do. He explained to me how to do it. The final two were basically installing items into doors; one pet door and vents into two other doors. Jim completed the job in accordance with his quote, and did an excellent job. He paid attention to the details, including doing some minor paint touch up that I think was over and beyond. Overall I'm very happy with the work.
