I like their professionalism and their punctuality. The handyman that came was very respectful. He did the work well. He took off his shoes when he entered our house so he did not leave foot marks on the floor.
Description of Work: I used the services of Moss Building & Design/Moss Home Services. They did a couple of things for me already. They also added a bathroom in my basement.

Stan arrived early. We were waiting for him to determine if the exterior wood trim needed to be replaced or could just be sanded and painted. Stan took time assessing the trim as well as the deck needs. My husband was ready to run to Home Depot to buy the boards if needed, but Stan determined there was no rotting. He gave my husband the name of the primer he wanted to use and of the bolts we would need for the deck. He got busy sanding, while my husband ran to Home Depot. We had planned these 3 main projects, and also had a back up project of interior painting in case there was time left. However, the 3 projects were completed in just under the 8 hours. We would definitely use Stan again. He's a handyman with years of experience. We were also very happy that Moss could schedule us so quickly as we're getting the house on the market soon.
Description of Work: Stan, the handyman from Moss, sanded and painted exterior trim, added new bolts to our deck to tighten it up, and removed and replaced our kitchen sink.

It went beautifully. Their customer service webpage permitted us to track the project including the overall budget and phases/steps. The individual team assigned to our project ("Alpha Team") was above average and went the extra mile to make sure all went according to planned. They were open to make modifications throughout the project to ensure we were happy. The coordinator who helped us make all selections (tile, bathroom fixtures, carpet, etc.) was fantastic, responsive and knowledgeable. We would use Moss again in a heartbeat!
Description of Work: Finished our basement from top to bottom: moved plumbing, installed a full bath, created multiple closets according to our specs, and executed customized design plan based on our preferences including a built in bookcase and tiled laundry area.

Thank you for your review! Our Moss Online tool is a great way for our clients to track selections, schedule, and their budget easily from home. We are so glad that you found this tool helpful as it is another way for us to make sure a project runs smoothly and provides clear communication for our clients. We hope you are enjoying your basement and look forward to working with you on future projects!
We found Moss via Angie's List and they were the third estimate we got for the work. We just moved and the laundry room was in a middle level room that was unfinished. We wanted the laundry facilities moved to the basement, and that middle level room to be finished and soundproofed to turn it into a home recording studio. The hot water heater and humidifier that could not also be moved to the basement were moved closer together and enclosed in a closet. The new laundry room in the basement needed to be finished (walls and ceiling as well as recessed lighting) and have all of the electrical and plumbing installed. Our experience began with Nathan who gave us the estimate, and he was very nearly spot on. The only things outside of the original price quote were things that we asked to be added throughout the process. Moss is not kidding when they give that quote-- it includes every foreseeable item to be done. We had to wait several weeks to get on their schedule-- they are extremely busy! Alex, the project manager, contacted us immediately to let us know where we stood. He gave us a date to begin and stuck to it. The whole project was slated to take 8 days. Kevin, Brian, and Dustin were the first crew to show up and they were above and beyond fantastic. They are knowledgeable, friendly, happy to answer questions, and they showed consideration for every part of the house they worked in! They were friendly to my children (3 and 10) and even let me know when they would be doing more banging than usual in case it bothered the 3 year old during the day (it didn't, but they still let me know what they were doing each day). Snow and illness held up the project for a couple of days, and then our hot water heater broke during the work, but Moss got us a new one and had it to our house the very next day (obviously I paid for it, but the pricing was competitive with anywhere else and the Moss team installed it so there was no waiting around for a separate installation guy). This team did all of the framing, electrical, plumbing, and moving and installation of the hot water heater and washer and dryer. I can't say enough how great they were: I've since given out Moss's info and their names specifically to several neighbors thinking of remodeling. The only hiccup in the process was the drywall team-- they are the reason I put the quality at a B. They didn't do a stellar job, banged up a few of our hallway walls in the process, and then sanded without covering anything at all-- everything was thick with drywall dust. Through the first part of the process project manager Alex was somewhat hands off (and had no reason not to be-- it was a super competent team) but when I contacted him about the drywall guys he answered immediately, came out to the house to inspect, and eventually even pulled that team. Then he sent in a cleaning team to clean all of the dust and they did a great job. His response was fast, extremely attentive, and effective. We did have to wait a bit to get our project back on their schedule but once back on track it was smooth sailing again. Terri and Keller arrived to finish up the work and begin priming, and they were so quiet about their work we would forget they were there! But like the first team they were polite, friendly, considerate, and made sure to let us know where the project stood at the end of each day. Gary Sr and Gary Jr (a father son duo!) came to do the trim work and paint the rooms. They certainly lived up to the type of guys we'd come to expect from Moss! They both had a great sense of humor, were talkative and knowledgeable about many things; Gary Jr found that a window was leaking, discovered why, and helped me fix it. Gary Sr even gave me a much needed lesson in bringing in my potted tomatoes to protect them from the coming frost that night. They were supposed to be pulled away to another project after one day at our house, and I actually requested that they stay. Whether or not my request carried weight I don't know, but they returned and finished everything off. The last person we saw was Emil, who put in all of the finishing touches and fixed up a storage door that was giving us trouble. He double checked that everything was working and all of the details covered and our project was done! We haven't found anything that he missed-- he wrapped everything up perfectly. All in all, Moss did a wonderful job. Our 8 day project ended up being a 3 week project, but much of that was due to changes to the rooms that we requested along the way. That is the only real con among many pros-- Moss is SO busy that when a project takes longer they have to move crews around to get all the work covered. At times it was an inconvenience, but the finished product is exactly what we wanted and more. They will be the first (and probably only) people we call if we need to remodel anything in the future!
Description of Work: Moved the laundry room to the basement (including installing all new plumbing and electrical) and created 2 new rooms from unfinished spaces (one with sound proofing), including all electrical and new plumbing.

We had a patio door replaced. They did a good job. The installer was most helpful along with his apprentice. They asked questions on how I wanted it completed and did a professional job. We had tried them previously for handy man projects as well. Both times they were on time, in budget and did good work. I would recommend them.

The team was very professional. They were very flexible and worked around our schedule. They even remembered to not ring the doorbell early in the am so they didn't wake up our daughter. The project manager was frequently in touch with us and visited the site several times to review the work. They were very friendly and responsive. They gave a free estimate and were willing to line item several ideas we had with the project so we could pick and choose from several options.
Description of Work: The project was a basement repair. This included fixing drywall, installing recessed lights and flush mount lights with switches, two new vents and painting. They created a nice cover for our circuit breaker box that blends in.

Stan arrived at 7:15 AM for a scheduled 7:30 appointment. He immediately got to work and performed the following repairs: 1. Changed damaged vinyl siding. 2. Repaired a broken sliding closet door. 3. Put together a 15' trampoline. 4. Repaired damaged portico roof. Stan is such a hard worker. He is professional, friendly, extremely proficient, knowledgeable, and above all a perfectionist. He did a fantastic job. I would highly recommend Moss because of their outstanding service and commitment to perfection.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us! We are so glad that you were able to take advantage of our deal on Angie's List as it is meant to help you get those "honey-do" items done in a timely and efficient manner. We appreciate your compliments to our team and thank you for your recommendation.
We absolutely love Moss Home Services. Specifically, Maria Estes, the scheduler, is a pleasure to work with and is the epitome of excellent customer service. When I first spoke to Maria, I had a terrible experience with JW Home Improvement. I was very upset because JW never showed up and were AWFUL to me when I called them. By the time I called Moss, I was angry and frustrated. Maria placated me and when I informed her that I needed a handyman as soon as possible, she worked her schedule so that I could be accommodated. When I described the type of projects that needed to be completed and suggested a handyman for the tasks, Maria recommended an electrican and explained why. By doing that, she saved me time and endless frustration. Maria impressed me tremendously and continues to impress me with her responsiveness, her professionalism, and her wonderful attitude. Maria is one of the many reasons why we will continue to use Moss Home Services. Since the first time that Maria scheduled Dolan, the handyman, we have had numerous other home projects. Brad, the electrician, re-wired our circuitry and replaced old light fixtures and ceiling fans with new ones. When my husband and I spoke to Brad about the circuitry project, it was evident that Brad was extremely knowledgeable and recommended alternative solutions to us. We took his recommendations and are very happy with the circuitry re-wiring in addition to the other work Brad completed. Each time that Brad and Dolan did work at our house, they arrived promptly at 7:30am with our list of projects in hand. They knew what they had to do and set about accomplishing the projects in a very efficient manner. In addition, Brad and Dolan treat our home very respectfully. They are careful to lay down plastic liners to protect our floors, they clean up the trash afterwards, they wear shoe covers, and they leave our home as clean or cleaner thn when they arrived. Because of their professionalism, competency, and outstanding customer service, we recommend Moss Home Services to everyone that we know and share our postive experience any opportunity that we get.
Description of Work: Dolan, the handyman from Moss Home Services, did the following for us: 1. Painted the ceiling in the dining room 2. Painted the ceiling in the office 3. Installed ballet barres 4. Removed old ceiling fan and install new ceiling fan 5. Repair dry wall

I thought I had posted this review earlier but apparently not. My apologies to Moss for not giving them timely recognition. It was time to finish the basement. I first met Justin from Moss at a local home show, several months before my project was to start. He appeared very knowledgeable and answered all my questions about the ins and outs of finishing a basement. In the months after the home show, I?ve talked to neighbors who had work done by Moss, or who?ve seen work done by Moss, and the refrain is uniform praise. When it came time to solicit bids, I picked Moss and another contractor I also met at the same home show, and two contractors with excellent reviews from Angie?s List. Moss?s bid was in the middle of the pack and was the more detailed in terms of scope of work and warranty terms. The bid also included a rough drawing based on my requirements and a lighting plan. Moss?s philosophy is one of collaboration. Unlike other design & build companies who would insist on having everything done and sourced through them, Moss is happy to accommodate other trades I might favor, materials I might obtain elsewhere, or even work I might do myself to cut down on cost. Also, while the other companies I interviewed sub-contract out plumbing and electrical, Moss has in house plumbers and electricians. Needless to say, I picked Moss to finish my basement. After contract signing, I was introduced to Jodi, who was my customer care manager. She walked me through what to expect during the construction process, what I needed to decide when, and my contacts for materials like fixtures and tiles. She gave me a 3-ring project binder to keep everything organized. On the first day of construction I was introduced to John, my project manager, and the father-son team of carpenters. We did a walk-through of the area, pointing out the specifics of what needs to go where, and generally where the walls would be. I had done quite a bit of planning before I put the project out to bid, and knew fairly well where in the floor plan precision is required, and where it can ?fit as needed.? The carpenters snapped lines for the framing and had me confirm the walls and doors are where I needed them to be. Over the next several weeks the framing went up, the trades came through, dry walls, doors & trims, flooring, paint, and final walk-thru. Along the way, as Justin and John warned me, I changed my mind on a few things and did change orders. There were a couple of items that had to be redone but that?s not unusual in any project and they always did it to my satisfaction. Overall, I had a very positive experience with Moss. They were very kind to put up with my incessant questions and my popping in and out to look while they worked. They also have a handyman service division and I will most definitely call them first for any future handyman projects. UPDATE: Since 2012, I've used Moss Home Services on a few jobs around the house and they have always been professional, the cost reasonable, and provided great follow up service when necessary.

It went very, very well and we were very pleased. He did a great job.
Description of Work: I used the doors and handymen service of Moss Building & Design | Moss Home Services. We had them to install a new door and so he had to do part of the framing around the door and painted it. Put the lock and everything.
We found Moss to be very professional. Although our original project manager left the company, Rob took over the job and the work was completed much to our satisfaction. Emil, Ken and the rest of the crew did a great job. They were punctual, courteous and meticulous. They made sure that they left the work area in order and clean. We would definitely use Moss Home Services again for any future work.
Description of Work: We had a slow leak from the hot water supply to the dishwasher which did damage to the end cabinet panel. Moss replaced the cabinet and repaired drywall and the pocket door frame damage in the basement that was also caused by the leak. They also installed 3 pendant lights over a wet bar and repainted the ceiling after the repair work.

I don't get to say this often about a contractor, but absolutely nothing went wrong. I didn't have to do anything but pay the bills; my project manager, Matt Alspaugh, handled all the stress. He called me about once a week to give me updates and prompt me to make decisions or purchase materials. He kept me organized, and kept his craftsmen and subcontractors organized, with all his punch lists. The construction foreman, Brady, was good at spotting potential problems ahead of time, and he called me up to discuss them with me before making a decision. I really liked that. While Brady & son were putting in the bathroom, we had a cold snap and 4 pipes burst under the downstairs bathroom, in the crawl space. I used Moss's plumber to fix them. A couple weeks later, with another cold snap in the forecast, Matt sent Brady & son over after hours to do an emergency insulation of the access points into the crawl space, thus preventing a repeat. I realized later that they were protecting their investment and avoiding a situation wherein the homeowner might think they should fix the pipes for free. That was an example of the thinking ahead that impressed me throughout the project. These guys are experienced and know what they are doing. I saw that at all levels, from the co-owner, Jason Hampel, who gave me the initial estimate and convinced me that I wanted to work with Moss, on down to the guys who were upstairs banging nails into walls. I'm surprised they don't charge more; their price of $60,000 was quite competitive with other contractors. But their people are the best.
Description of Work: Created the space for an upstairs bathroom out of the back roof of my Cape Cod, by putting in a gabled dormer. Then installed the bathroom from scratch. Additionally used some of the space created by the dormer to put in full-sized closets in both upstairs bedrooms.

Both the handyman and plumber were professional, punctual and hardworking. Both communicated well their processes. Initially, the handyman was under the impression my kitchen ceiling was the only chore, which was done very professionally. Once he was done with this, well under the 8 hours purchased to include the plumber, I stated there were other projects I had because I purchased 8 hours. He had no issue at all performing my additional tasks and actually went beyond what I asked. I have no hesitation at all recommending them.
Description of Work: I purchased the Handy man package for 8 hours of service. My handyman needs ended up needing their plumber for a couple of hours for outdoor and indoor faucet issues and handyman services for kitchen ceiling resurfacing/painting, kitchen backsplash regrouting, fence mending, and garage hole repair.

Beware hourly rate deals. The give hourly rate workers no incentive to be timely. So, I have to say upfront that the Moss management was responsive to our concerns and made every effort to provide good customer service. They seems like an honest company, and the work was generally high quality. The reason they got a "B" and not an "A" from us was for their billing and scheduling practices. Use them for complete jobs and skip the hourly handyman deals. We purchased an Angie's List deal for several hours of handyman services. We needed to move a cabinet, fix a hole in our ceiling from a plumbing repair, as well as put up a tile backsplash and paint the kitchen. We didn't know how long this would take, but when contacted by telephone Moss refused to give us even a ballpark estimate of how much they might be able to get done in that amount of time. This is understandable when they haven't yet seen the work site, but they refused to do so even after their first worker had seen the place.... What followed was a frustrating cascade of incomplete jobs and rescheduling that left us frustrated. They sent multiple workers on different days to fulfill the request, and we had to go over the details each time. The shuffle was in part meant to make sure they had the right guy for each task, but it lead to some frustrating inconsistency. It took several weeks to finally complete the job. Ultimately, the 8 hours budgeted wasn't enough to complete the tile work. When discussing how to finish up, the Moss manager and I agreed to have the guy use up the remaining hours from the deal, and then "finish up". Needless to say, I was surprised and shocked to receive a bill for an additional 9 hours of labor at over $70 an hour. Lesson learned- be specific in these things. "Finishing up" might mean a full workday to some people. Apparently the workers and managers at Moss did not feel it necessary to seek authorization or inform the homeowners of the nearly 100% time and price overage. At that rate it would be cheaper for me to take leave from work and do it myself than to pay the handyman. An auto repair shop would never perform that much work over an initial estimate without seeking to inform the vehicle owner and receive permission.... On the plus side, when I made my case to the Moss management (and, frankly, explained that I was going to have to provide fellow Angie's List users an accurate and detailed account of my experience and bill) quickly agreed to a reduced rate, which we felt was fair. Bottom line: Moss did quality work and is responsive to their customers. But the hourly rate deals are tough for both homeowners and companies to manage, especially in the expectations realm. I would avoid such deals in the future and just agree to work on a job-by-job basis so there's an incentive to finish early and under budget for the contractor.
Description of Work: Cabinet move, Ceiling/Drywall repair and painting, and tile backsplash.

The repairs went much faster than anticipated, so while Jonathan went to the store for a special adhesive, we went to Ikea for a bookcase we had been wanting to purchase. The 8 hours of work gave us enough time for Jonathan to perform the work we had initially requested, plus assemble the bookcase. We would use their services again, and probably will later this year for another project. One word of caution about the handyman deal: make sure you have plenty of work ready to be done. The work may take less time than you think and if you want to get your money's worth for a pre-paid deal it is better to have more work than not enough work. They did a great job at our house and we are very happy with the work that got done.
Description of Work: We bought a deal for handyman for a day. During that time frame, we had several small repairs resolved: light fixture installed, horizontal blinds installed, miscellaneous caulking, shower soap dish installed, slow drain repaired, door knob replaced, wire shelving installed, and a bookcase assembled. The handyman also measured out spacing for us to hang picture frames at a later date.

We hired Moss to repair damage caused by a pinhole leak in a pipe. Ken was the employee who performed the work and did an excellent job - especially the floors. Ken went out of his way to find floor boards that matched the rest of the flooring in our living room. After sanding, staining, and finishing you cannot tell which boards are new and which are 60 years old. He kept everything clean and minimized dust from sanding. Also, Moss did an excellent job communicating with us to schedule a work date and everybody (from the estimate to the actual work) showed up on schedule.

Fabulous! Best two workers I've had in a long time. They were good at what they did, worked non-stop and on time. Very efficient, and professional. Will definitely call them if I have any gutter, rotten wood issues in the future.
Description of Work: Cleaned all corners, and re-caulked, also fixed rotten wood at corner.

In his first visit, Brad from Moss came by and removed the undercabinet lighting fixure/wires. He told me it would be better if he came back and complete the remainder of the work when the old cabinets were removed On the second visit, Brad completed the work order by adding two GFIs and a new outlet after my contractor removed the cabinets. I was not there at the time (had a lock box), but when I came home that afternoon the work was completed, the drywall was not torn up. He did a very professional job. The quality of his workmanship was noted by my contractor. I would absolutely use Moss again in future projects.
Description of Work: I'm in the process of renovating my 1970 kitchen I needed to upgrade my electrical outlet to GFI and add a second outlet to meet the electrical code requirement. I also had wires/old underlighting fixtures removed from my existing cabinets.

The entire experience was a pleasure. I was worried about it being overwhelming, especially the selection process. However, the kitchen designer, Erin Hoopes, assisted with each and every decision (cabinets, flooring, tile, lighting, paint, etc.) She was able to take my very high level vision and make it come alive. The Program Manager (Bob Keene) and team that actually did the construction (Marty and Elwood) were top notch. They were at the house each and every morning first thing - I've never seen people in the remodeling business so punctual and professional. The quality of each facet is outstanding - cabinets, countertop and appliance install, hardware and lighting, etc. It was all completed without a hitch. I was nervous about the scheduling, given the nightmares I've heard from friends and relatives about over-promising. However, Moss provided a detailed schedule that I was able to access online that they kept to, even given the bad weather that we had during the winter. They set expectations and were able to deliver on time and within budget. There were a few change orders, but those were due to me wanting further work done - not because of lack of planning on Moss' part. Using Moss' online tool was really easy. I was able to approve the design, selections and change orders at my convenience without the hassle of the exchange of any documents (although they will provide paper copies if needed). I also trusted the Moss crew explicitly to be in my home unattended. We have two dogs and I was worried about them getting out with people coming and going - this was never an issue. The crew was very respectful of my home and everything was cleaned up at the end of every day. I can't say enough good things about my experience with Moss Building and Design. There was never a moment when I wondered what I had gotten myself into. Each night it was exciting to go home and see the progress that had been made that day. The transformation is amazing!

I called to request an estimate for a kitchen and bath renovation. They earliest available appointment was over a month away, which I took. On the day of the estimate the designer emailed and said she needed to delay/cancel due to car problems. I understand that this is out of her control, I had taken off work that morning to support the meeting. I rescheduled for a few weeks later. On the morning of the rescheduled appointment the designer contacted me and said she had to cancel due to a passing. Of course I"m sorry for her loss, but I had taken off work that morning to support the appointment. I was hoping that the company would have had some plan in place to cover the appointments in these instances, especially given the long lead times to get an appointment.
