Called for an estimate on 4/26/15 to have a door it's surrounding exterior replaced because of wood rot. Anyone who has dealt with a situation with wood rot knows you have to act ASAP. I do not understand how a business operates successfully when you cannot manage to provide estimates in a timely manner. I was told that no one could come out to provide a simple estimate till sometime in June. Six to seven weeks for just an estimate is ridiculous!
Description of Work: Nothing. Could not manage to schedule just a simple estimate until over a month and a half out.

It went very well. I had handyman services for a day and he was able to achieve quite a bit on my list including rebuilding a picket fence with new cross bars and pickets, and a new gate/lock/hinge. He even had time to custom cut the picket tops so that they looked just like the old ones. He was very nice, considerate, knowledgeable and skilled. I would really like to have them come back on a regular basis to get things done around the house!
Description of Work: Replaced outdoor lamp post and light, rebuilt a picket fence and gate to look just like the old fence, removed some other old fence posts, fixed two gutter problems.

They did a very nice job. The work looks very professional and well-done. The tile-work is beautiful, the room works really well for our purposes and they were very professional about showing up on time every day, doing the work and cleaning up after the work. Marty Fletcher was the project manager and he is fantastic. He calls or texts me each day to let me know if/when the workers will be there the next day, keeps me up-to-speed on the progress of the project and really knows his stuff when it comes to building and managing a project. We had a bit of a tight deadline to finish the job, because of a home business that I run. Marty went above-and-beyond in making sure the job was finished on time and done right.
Description of Work: We expanded our laundry room and added a powder room, as part of the new laundry room. It was a complicated job because they had to move the electrical box in the garage, add a lot of new plumbing for the washer, toilet and sink, do HVAC vents for the room, cut a door that opened out to the back yard (we wanted the powder room for our pool area) as well as construction to enlarge the room.

Moss Building and Design recently finished our basement. Their people did an outstanding job. In particular, I would like to single out two of them. Greg Greksouk sold us on the company. He showed us that we could afford not just the basic project but that we could also afford to upgrade the finishings to make it the basement of our dreams. The final price was what we were hoping to spend. But, we were expecting that it would actually cost much more. Brian Sherry, our project manager, did a great job of keeping the project on schedule and making sure that everything was done exactly the way we wanted it to be. He took a lot of the stress away by demonstrating that he was committed to ensuring that we were entirely satisfied with the work. He smoothed away the problems that came up with certain vendors and made it easy to work with some vendors we selected who were not on their recommended list.
Description of Work: Finished our basement including a large recreation room, a wet bar and dining area, a fitness room, and a full bathroom.

This is our fourth, and largest, project with MOSS and we were extremely pleased, as always. Our project manager, Matt, was very knowledgeable and detail oriented, taking care of us like family. Jodi, our Customer Care Manager, made the process as stress free as possible and the finish selection both easy and enjoyable. There was excellent communication from MOSS. We knew who was coming when and if there was a delay we were informed promptly. Their workforce was diligent and on-task. All of MOSS's employees were careful, respectful, and very clean. During the project, the roofing sub-contractor had some difficulties. Another roofing subcontractor was quickly found that fixed the problem and MOSS got the project moving again. The other issue we had was that the cabinet coloring was uneven. Matt and Jodi worked with the cabinet manufacturer to have the fronts redone until they were perfect with very little hassle for us. We were exceedingly pleased with MOSS and highly recommend them. We already thinking of our next MOSS project.

We recently completed a 3200 square foot home renovation, and Moss was the chosen general contractor. I had used Moss in my previous home for a master suite bathroom renovation and was very happy with their work, and wanted to continue the relationship. We brought them in on our new home project, which was a full over-haul of a historic home in Delaplane, Virginia. The home had not been lived in over 7 years and was severely neglected. We needed all disciplines ?on deck? to do HVAC, plumbing, electrical, drywall, bathroom tiling, kitchen cabinet installation, and flooring. Having a formal education in design and a working background in project management, I knew what to expect from a ?typical contractor?. Moss exceeded my expectations multiple times over. At the beginning of the project, I met with one of the senior managers (multiple times) at the property (quite a distance from their office) and discussed the project in depth. He heard what I wanted, asked the right questions and assisted me in making the right choices for finishes which directly affected the tight timeline in which I needed to complete this house. After receiving and approving the budget (after some massaging), I was happy that Moss fulfilled my request and gave me a project manager with whom I worked previously on my last project. Matt and I met at the home, discussed the budget, scope, and the cost and established a preliminary schedule. Moss was very flexible with me in allowing me to procure some of the materials for a cost savings, which was greatly appreciated. After the permitting process, the Moss staff worked with my schedule for access and the project kicked-off in full speed! The disciplines all talked with one another and worked well in not allowing too much ?down time?. Matt gave me daily updates and status reports on what transpired in the home and the next steps to be taken. Since I believe that Communication is the most important action in a large project (our budget was hovering around at $300k), I appreciated the afternoon calls from Matt and was excited to see their progress. The progress did go well, and all promises were kept. The team was considerate of the home and treated it like their own (e.g.: shoes were removed, trash was picked-up, etc.). The thing I appreciated the most was the getting to know the guys working in the home. It felt like we were a team working towards the same goal: restoring a vintage home. Their professionalism and commitment actually made me feel good about the project we were taking on. The project was not complete when we were forced to move back into the home. It created some scheduling challenges with us being home, but Moss was very kind to work with us and completed the project. Even after the project was formally complete, Matt, the project manager, followed-up on punch list items to ensure his team and his subcontractors took care of the open items. Even Matt himself came over to assist with punch list items so that he could confirm the work was done correctly. That attention to detail was greatly respected which is why I will use Moss on my next project.

The work was excellent - I can not even see where the repairs were made to the wall - and I had floor to ceiling cracks. THe other thing that is very important to me is that the person doing the work was there early so I wasn't stressed about getting to work on time. When I got home, the work was all done, and the place was clean. Who could ask for more!

We purchased a house that, politely put, needed fixing. We contacted Moss Building & Design based on the reviews on Angie's List. It went very well. I had a tight schedule and Moss was very accomodating. Our new home had NO functioning bathrooms. The basement bath had a fascinating shower that was very tiny and about a foot off the ground, clearly not legal or safe. Moss secured all the necessary permits to replace the shower with a proper, safe one plus they updated a workroom to have electricity and fixed many of the other safety issues in the house. They were done in a timely manner and we were able to move into our new, safe and now BEAUTIFUL house on time. Even Brian, our project manager, stated he was surprised at how beautiful it all turned out. I love the new house, a couple of small issues popped up after the work was completed and Moss was quick to address them. I very highly and enthusiastically recommend their services.

It went very well. Alex was my project manager and was very communicative with me the whole time. It turned out that the door was delayed so we had to delay starting by a week, but thankfully everybody was available. As the work was progressing, since the job was incorporating a new look so to speak, Alex texted me pictures of the door when it got installed, so that was most welcome. All in all, I couldn't have asked for a better experience. It could have been a little cheaper of course, but the pricing was not out of this world unreasonable to me at all and the results are well worth the money I spent. I've used Moss for many other handyman projects and always feel like I'm getting my money's worth. I will definitely continue to use Moss for my other projects as they come up.

I called Moss to figure out a leak in my living room ceiling. The Moss plumber came out and inspected the ceiling and suggested that the leak was coming from the master bathroom shower. After further examination, he concluded that we would need to remove the tiles from the shower floor and halfway up the shower walls and replace them. He suggested that a sales consultant visit us to go over the timing and potential cost. On a side note, while the plumber was at my house, I asked him about a thumping sound that came from our pipes when we would turn our water on. He did some tests and concluded that issue was a faulty PRV valve. He offered to fix it right then and there but as I was heading out (and it wasn't a real emergency), we decided to have him come back a few days later. He came on time and very quickly fixed the valve and the thumping noise was gone. And there are no more worries about a potential leak. A few days later a Moss handyman came out to repair the panel that had to be cut out to repair the valve. Emil was courteous and respectful and got right to work to fix the panel. In fact, it looks better now than it did before! Back to the shower....a sales consultant visited us and went over the master bathroom issue. We were told 4 days labor (that included ripping out the tile, re-setting new tile, and also repairing the ceiling in the living room that had been damaged by the leaking water. We agreed to the price and time frame. Unfortunately, the project couldn't begin right away because the tile that I'd ordered (on my own) was backordered. However, it ended up coming in a week early. I called Moss and they found someone on their team to come out the next day to start the project. Our project manager, Alex, was very responsive throughout the project. The guys who came to work were very nice and careful about keeping the house and work area as clean as possible. The project took just 4 days and in the end, we like the shower much better than before. The work was done beautifully and carefully. I was very pleased. Moss is coming to my house this week to install floodlights on our house. I would definitely continue to use them.

They did a good job. They cut into the drywall in the downstairs ceiling and found the source of the leak, which was in the plumbing of the upstairs bathroom. They pulled out some of the shower tile to access the plumbing, repaired the leak, then replaced the tile, drywall and re-painted the downstairs ceiling. They did a very nice job and everything looks and works perfectly now. Very professional, honest, easy to work with. We've had Moss do several projects on our home and have been very happy with their work. Marty is their project manager and he is very accessible, knowledgeable and professional. He is the best project manager we have ever worked with. We'll definitely hire Moss for other projects in the future, should we need more work done.

The work done was excellent and we could not be more pleased with Moss from start to finish. We specified the drywall repair work we needed, and asked them to use a basic white paint because we were going to deal with repainting later. No problem. The estimate was quick and professional. They sent two men out to help remove the old ceiling drywall and bring in the new drywall and get it set in place. They arrived exactly when they said they would, and immediately got to work. Then one worker finished the job of installing and patching and painting. They did exactly what we wanted. They paid so much attention to cleanliness, which we appreciated as it was our kitchen ceiling being repaired. The work was done quickly and efficiently, minimal fuss. The invoice was delayed a bit, but it was exactly as we expected. We will definitely hire this business again for future remodeling and/or handyman services. Great experience.

On January 28 I called Moss and spoke with Linda, a member of the ill-named Customer Care Team. I explained that I have a house in Arlington where I want the basement remodeled, and that scheduling a consultation is difficult because the property is rented. I further explained that the basement situation is "quirky" and would require someone with a real designer's eye. She said Jason, one of the owners, would "by far" be the best person for the job. Because we had to schedule around Jason, me, and my tenant, we set it up for March 26 - two months in advance. On the afternoon of March 23 someone from Moss called me and said, "Jason has had something come up and has to cancel. Would you like to reschedule?" She also offered to have someone else keep the appointment instead of Jason. I pointed out that (a) I had scheduled 2 months in advance; (b) rescheduling is difficult because the house is rented, and (c) Linda had gone on and on to tell me that Jason was THE best person to help me design a remodel for a weird, quirky basement. I felt that the Moss person either didn't hear me or didn't care about my situation. She dismissed each of my concerns without truly addressing them. When I asked to speak to a manager she replied that all the managers would tell me the same thing. So I ended the call without resolution. After thinking about it for a bit I called her back and asked to speak with Jason. Finally, she relented and said that it was a "family matter" that was causing him to cancel. Her tone make me think it was perhaps something grave and I started feeling guilty for pressing the point. I eventually got Jason on the phone and he explained that he did, indeed have a family issue in the sense that one of his family members wanted him to do something. It was far from urgent or bad and, in fact, he admitted that it was essentially just poor planning on their part. After all of that Jason finally said he would keep the appointment if I you really wanted him to - but not without a healthy dose of guilt thrown in. I decided that if he would be keeping the appointment reluctantly I may not get his best work product, so I politely declined. Jason then proposed that I skip meeting with them and meet with an outside architect with whom they often work. On the upside I'd get actual architectural-quality diagrams suitable to take straight to a builder. On the downside, I'm paying around $500 right out of the box rather than getting a sense of what the builder thinks. Since I was pretty disgusted with Moss by that point, I decided to take them up on their offer, meet with the architect and skip Moss. I'm sure I'll get a quality product for my money, but the architect is limited in what designs he can give me because he has ideas that only a builder will know whether they can be done (like blowing a doorway in the wall of a bomb shelter). I can't believe that Moss was going to cancel an appointment they'd made with me 2 months earlier. I'm deeply disappointed with the unprofessional way they went about canceling it. And I think it's kind of crummy that Jason offered to keep the appointment - but only after letting me know how much it would interfere with his family plans. And now I'm paying around $500 for an architect's designs without knowing whether a builder can actually do all of them. UPDATE: Moss referred me to an architect rather than keep the appointment we had scheduled 2 months earlier. Including travel, I spent 3 hours on that architect, who said he would have something back to me in "a couple weeks." More than a month later I never heard from him, either. Apparently Moss likes to work with contractors who share their concept of customer service.
Description of Work: They called me on 3 days notice to cancel a consultation appointment I scheduled 2 months earlier. Staff was unsympathetic and uncaring about how difficult it would be for me to reschedule.

I am disappointed to hear of your dissatisfaction. At MOSS we strive to provide all of our clients and potential clients with the utmost customer care, it is what sets MOSS apart from others in our industry and has allowed us to receive the Angie’s List Super Service Award for five consecutive years in a row. I am disappointed that this was not portrayed in our interaction with you. We have an enormous amount of respect for our clients and their schedules. We would never respond in a way that was inappropriate, such as saying: “Fine, I’ll keep the appointment if you really want me to.” This would be rude and counter-productive if we are both going to invest time to meet. The intent was to satisfy your needs in any way possible. I apologize if this portion of our conversation somehow gave you a different impression. After hearing the project details and understanding the design complexities, we both determined that having one of our architects meet with you first at the original scheduled appointment time would be the most effective use of your time. Since speaking with you I am happy to hear that you did meet with the architect at the original scheduled time and indicated that you plan on engaging him to move your process forward. I understand you will not be asking us for a quote to execute the work. I wish you the very best on your project! Sincerely, Jason

We had been considering a kitchen remodel for years, but trying to figure out how to remove an unsightly bulkhead running through our kitchen always got in the way. Moss came up with a solution and oversaw a new HVAC system installation. Moss kitchen designer, Erin Hoopes, guided us through the process of choosing appliances, cabinets, fixtures and countertops and her expertise is apparent when you look at our completed kitchen -- IT'S BEAUTIFUL. Our project manager, Marty Fletcher, was always very responsive to any questions we had and very accommodating when it came to changes we wanted to make. Marty always made us feel that our satisfaction was his number one priority. Terry and Lonnie did a fantastic job with the day-to-day work and their attention to detail was incredible. They cleaned up each day before they left, which meant a great deal to us, as we have kids and a dog. Speaking of our dog, the guys even took great care of our dog! Greg Ivie, the electrician, is the best you could ask for. He did so much wiring (including a new electric panel) and installed so many lights, fixtures, appliances, outlets and switches and it was all done perfectly. His knowledge of his trade is impressive. He even worked through one weekend when we were going to be out of the house so he could minimize the time the power would be off while we were home. Talk about great customer service -- wow!

For this project, I purchased the $499 deal (8 hours for an electrician). In order to gain time, I purchased all the necessary materials (ie shallow housings, recessed lights, dimmable switches, plates, LED bulbs etc) beforehand. Once Greg arrived, he inspected the materials and had me run to HomeDepot to grab some other items that we needed. No biggie. Estimate of time to finish entire job: 1 day and 1/2. Greg arrived on time on both days, worked diligently and non-stop until project was accomplished. Greg is a hard-worker. Greg is very professional and knows his trade very well. He made useful/important suggestions. I highly recommend Greg for any electrical project. This was my first time ever hiring a contractor. I have zero knowledge concerning electrical work and I just needed someone to come to my house and do the work w/out me having to worry about a single thing. Also, customer service at Moss Home Services is awesome! When I first contacted Moss, Maria Estes explained very well how the $499 deal worked. She is very courteous and patient. She's also very responsive via e-mail and phone and kept me in the loop about scheduling and answered all of my questions in a timely manner. And I had many questions. :-) Thank you Moss!
Description of Work: 1) install new recessed lighting in living room area 2) install kitchen island lighting (pendant lights) 3) replace existing kitchen light fixture with one (track lights) and; 4) replace existing bathroom fixtures with new ones

They did a beautiful job! We have recommended Moss to several friends and colleagues. We've worked with several builders/contractors over the years. By far, Moss is the most professional, honest, skilled contractor we've encountered. Their project manager, Marty, is the best in the business. He is very knowledgeable in all aspects of the construction business, accessible, always available by phone, has answers for all of our questions, and he always made sure to email or call me each day, to let me know how the project was going and when the workers would be there next. We plan to have them do some other project for us, down the road. Additionally, I appreciate that they used licensed workers, that they make sure to get all the proper permits, and they really do things by the book. They also guarantee their work. They are really the best in the northern Virginia, Washington, DC metro region.
Description of Work: We hired Moss to do a major remodel of our master bathroom and they did a lovely job. The job required some pretty extensive plumbing work, as well as construction work, tearing down an old wall and enlarging the bathroom, etc. They did the entire bathroom: design, demolition, trash removal, plumbing, construction, install of new bath/shower/toilet/vanity/lighting. They painted, did the tile as well. They did an absolutely beautiful job and we love our new bathroom. We've gotten so many compliments on it and the work is very professional. Great attention to detail!

This man, and I apologize for forgetting his name because I really should remember he was such a pleasure and very knowledgable, came at the time agreed. We walked through what needed to be done and he remembered one thing on my list that I forgot during the walk through. He went through each job and if there was an issue or a little more attention needed let me know and then went and finished the job. He was very methodical in his approach and after each task was completed cleaned that are and when to the next. He was very respectful of the home. He seems to really enjoy what he does and it showed. Everything works. Every thing looks great and I couldn't be happier.
Description of Work: He's put in place 3 smoke detectors, two ceiling fans, two light fixtures and fixed one switch

There were four things we especially liked about working with Moss: 1) They were careful to protect the house from dirt and damage by hanging plastic, covering the floors, moving furniture. 2) The workmen were pleasant and professional. 3) They were quick to respond and good-natured when we had questions and requests for changes. 4) They kept their tools and the materials orderly and out of our way, and they took away the trash promptly.
Description of Work: Moss installed a bathroom in our basement. The plumbing had not been roughed in

Moss did a wonderful job completing the unfinished areas of our basement (approximately 850 square feet), including a bedroom, sitting room and walk-in closet for my college age son, and a billiards room. The project manager, Marty Fletcher, was terrific. Marty assembled such a wonderful team to do the work that we really didn't see him that frequently, nor did we need to. Ryan Pettit and David Prescott did the framing, carpentry and electrical wiring. In addition to being extremely competent, they were truly nice guys that we enjoyed having in our home. Their attention to the smallest of details and impressive productivity set the stage for a superior project outcome. Moss subcontracted the drywall installation, priming and painting to VL Drywall, who were masterful, and used high quality Benjamin Moore paint on the walls. Moss also subcontracted out the tile (12 x 24 inch) installation and it looks awesome. I selected Moss for this job after reading Angie's List reviews of their work, and they did not disappoint. Our neighbor has decided to use Moss to finish their basement based on our recommendation. We wouldn't hesitate to use Moss for any future home projects, big or small.
