They did a fantastic job. I thought it would cost me a lot to get the work done, they looked and said the repair was simple. So, at a fraction of what I thought I would spend, they fixed it within an hour. I will use them again and again.

The project kicked off with us meeting with our project manager Marty. He broke down in great detail how the project would progress and how they would make every attempt to keep us comfortable as the addition was being built. This was one of our greatest concerns going into the project knowing we were going to be living in a construction zone with our two kids for the next 4-6 months. Moss was very good with installing zipper walls (to contain dust), putting up temporary walls (to provide safety while our house was open to the outside), and even adapting scheduling so as to make our home livable while under construction. One of our other concerns going in was their reliance upon subcontractors to carry out several phases of the project, this really turned out to be a blessing in disguise. The subs were all fully vetted established companies Moss has been using for years (they already did the work finding the good ones so you can be at ease, if they did a poor job in the past Moss wouldn't have given them another shot). Alvero and family was fantastic and my kids loved having them around. On a select few instances when the subs work didn't live up to our expectations Marty would make sure they made it right. Moss further employees a large number of specialty craftsmen that perform anything from installing moulding to installing a new circuit panel and wiring up all the electrical. Louise was a standout here going above and beyond to not only perform his job as the electrician but also take care of anything else that needed to be done. The respect and admiration these craftsman all had for Marty really made us feel good and further proved how good Marty was at his job. On a higher level, when we had a contractual disagreement with the business manager, ownership stepped in and made sure we were satisfied with the end product. Thanks Justin. If I were to do the same project today I would hire Moss again (as long as I had Marty). You need to be comfortable with this company that you are handing your money and the keys to your house to, they're going to be spending a good amount of time with you. Moss's craftsman and craftsmanship far exceeded our expectations.
Description of Work: Moss built a two story addition (~1000 sq ft) on our house adding two bedrooms, a bathroom, and a family room, while opening up several walls in the existing structure to create a more open floor plan.

This is the second time I have used Moss and both times I have been satisfied. Both times the handymen requested my "to do" list on arrival so they can determine the most efficient way to tackle the list. They let me purchase the materials in advance, too, so they didn't have to spend labor hours gathering supplies. The quality of work is good, and they were very professional and flexible (to the extent possible) in scheduling the work. I will use them again.

We were looking for an interior painter for our entryway and had received numerous quotes. We chose Moss, though, after our rep Jason worked tirelessly to get us a fair price and on schedule quickly with Omar. The price came in slightly higher than we were looking for, but certainly within an acceptable range. Omar came on a Friday to do the estimate and was there right on time the following Monday morning. He and his crew worked hard and finished the job in one day, cleaning up very well afterwards. Overall I found Moss and their painting crew to be responsive and professional...exactly what we look for in a contractor.

The handyman was very prompt and worked very fast which was good since I'd purchased a deal for a specific amount of time. He did a good job on each of the little jobs I had and seemed to be very knowledgeable. I plan to use them again when I need similar work done.
Description of Work: Various handyman jobs around the house such as hang a heavy mirror, install closet shelves, install insulation.
We requested to work with Bob Keane's team as we have worked with them successfully before. Bob sent us Rick Taylor as his lead and we could not have been more pleased with this group of guys! They consistently showed up on time and worked very well together. Rick made suggestions as to placement of bath fixtures, lighting, as well as floor and shower tile. We could tell by their expertise that we were in good hands! As the head of this team, Bob was in touch with both his team and the homeowner to make sure things were running smoothly. As odd as it may sound, I was sorry to see the project done, cause I will miss seeing these guys! I guess I'll have to find something else for Moss to do!
Description of Work: Moss demolished our Master bathroom and helped us transform it into a beautiful spa like retreat. They set us up with various vendors who helped provide guidance in choosing materials that would work well in our space. This included fixtures, tile and counter tops. They then worked for about 4 weeks to install the fixtures, do the tile work, lighting, plumbing and painting.
We have a 1973 colonial that needed bathroom remodeling. Our next door neighbors had used Moss Building & Design to remodel and renovate their kitchen and are extremely pleased with the results. So we had Moss give us an estimate and decided to have them do the work. The original measurements and estimate were in late February, and the designer was a treat to work with. She set up an appointment, that fit our schedules, for my spouse and myself to pick out tile, cabinets, and design layouts and paint color choices. They were willing to allow us to pick up our own marble counter tops from a stone boutique and all our light fixtures, faucets, towel bars, mirrored medicine cabinets, and grab bars at our local hardware store.Work was not started until mid April as we were traveling in March. The Master bath was first to be demolished and renovated. John and Alex laid a plastic cover on the stairs and upstairs hallway and Master bedroom carpet and a canvas tarp over the entryway for flooring protection. At the end of each work day they vacuumed their work area, and swept from the work area down the hallway, down the steps and into a dustpan at the front door! They were extremely tidy in their work habits and once a week their "pick up crew" came by the house and took their detritus. It took about 3 days to get everything torn down and taken out. Then the drywall was replaced and weati board was used in the shower, we had a heating element for the floor in the shower/toilet area, the shower area and vanity area tiled. We had a mini mosaic tile used in the shower pan and as an eye-height accent around the shower stall. A hand-held shower head on a slide bar replaced the fixed shower head, as my spouse and I have a 13" height difference. There was a bit of delay on receiving the vanities (furniture always seems to be slow) and for the delivery of the marble vanity top. John and Alex did a wonderful job of bringing the wiring of both bathrooms up to code and installing a shower light and a bathroom fan/light combo.(The previous owner had done his own "re-wiring".) They also did an excellent job installing corner shelving and a foot-rest for leg shaving! John and Alex were kind enough to work with me about placement of the heated towel rack. knob placements on the vanity cabinet and wall plugs. As this was my first bathroom remodel, I had purchased high arched faucets, not realizing that the medicine cabinet door would be blocked by this. After this was pointed out to me, I exchanged the faucets and the work proceeded apace. They were kind enough to also install a toilet handle that matches the fixtures for me. There was a major delay in obtaining a glass door for the shower--it is an odd size. But the stunningly large and gorgeous door Mr. Keene, the foreman, was able to obtain for us was well worth the wait.. . After the walls were painted and the shower door hung, work began on the hallway bathroom. Again, demolition and removal took about 3 days. Again, we had a mini-mosaic tile accent at eye-height around the tub tiling and John suggested we use the mini-mosaic tile as a back-splash around the marble vanity top to tie the bathroom and dressing room together. We did, and it looks amazing! Again, Alex and John rewired the bathroom for a shower/tub light, bathroom fan/light combo fixture and extra plugs...the kids like to listen to their iPod while they shower. After installing a new tub and toilet, painting the doors, trim, walls & ceiling, tiling the tub area, floor and vanity back-splash, vanity knobs, matching toilet handle, replacement vent covers,Ale towel racks, window treatment and door robe hooks, Alex and John did one last work area vacuum, swept down the hallway, down the stairs and into a dust pan at the front door for the last time, picked up their plastic carpet covering and left. The next day their cleanup crew had picked up all their detritus from our driveway. We are most pleased with their work and not only will we gladly recommend them highly to others, we will be having them work for us in the near future.

Moss is fantastic and I would recommend them to anyone. They came in with a fair price proposal and negotiated with us to make sure the projects came in within our budget. Once under contract, we had nothing but good experiences working with Moss. Their personnel and subcontractors were professional, knowledgeable, respectful, and courteous. Our assigned project manager, Marty Fletcher, worked with us to make sure that we knew what was happening throughout the process. He always erred on the side of caution with the engineering decisions (particularly with the second floor addition), used high quality materials, and took the time to get things done right. Anytime there was an issue, Marty was quick to resolve it to our satisfaction. In the middle of the project, we had a family emergency arise. Marty and the entire Moss team was responsive, flexible, and extremely compassionate in working with me to finish the project. I cannot say enough great things about my experience working with Moss. I have also heard that they have a home repair/handyman service, which I have not used yet, but will be taking advantage of these services the next time I need help with smaller repairs.
Description of Work: Moss supported two related projects for us. The first was to add a floor over our 2-story living room to create a new bedroom. Then we brought them back to remodel our master bathroom and add a new bathroom.

I purchased a 499 handyman for a day deal to have my front railings sanded and repainted plus some drywall work inside the house. He was the first contractor to truly FIX the nail pops, using an electric screwdriver to replace the nails with screws so they wouldn't simply sag again and ruin the finish in two years or so. The railing work was very well done -- though the pitting couldn't be fixed, the rust was removed and the new paint job was very adequate. My general take is that the contractor who was sent was competent and did good work though it was slow-walked somewhat -- despite this deal being for 8 hours of work, I think I probably got 6.5 hours of effort out of it. That said, northern Virginia is truly a rat's nest of awful contractors, all of whom are absurdly overpriced, and Moss is one of the better experiences I've had since becoming a homeowner in 2011. B plus; I'd use them again.

I first contacted Moss in spring 2013 when I was looking to remodel my kitchen and convert a laundry area to a half bath. I met with two Moss representatives and I was sent a proposal via email shortly thereafter. Based on that email, I replied asking if there were any additional design changes that could be made to reduce the cost further. After several weeks without a response I moved forward with another contractor on my project. Fast forward to spring 2016 and my husband and I are considering a two-story addition to our home. After putting together a short list of contractors and seeing the many positive reviews for Moss, I decided (against my better judgement) to give them another shot, hoping that my previous experience was a fluke. Our meeting went quite well and my husband and I were encouraged by the feasibility of our project and that we may have found a contractor that we could work with. We simply request a rough estimate so that we could determine the best way to finance the project and whether it was feasible within the next few years. I told the Moss representative of my previous experience with the company and he was puzzled by the lack of follow-up and said that it was likely that the people I talked to previously were no longer with the company. He assured us that my previous experience was an aberration and that there was a process in place at Moss to avoid a similar occurrence. We set up a conference call for Friday of the following week. Friday came along and I rushed home (even cutting short a hospital visit to a seriously ill family member) to join my husband for the call. After 10 minutes of waiting, my husband called the Moss representative who came to our home and he informed us that someone had quit and he couldn’t talk to us but that we could talk the following Monday evening. We never received a phone call on Monday and haven’t heard anything from Moss since – phone or email, much less an estimate. It has been SEVEN WEEKS since our in-person meeting. We obviously have no interest in pursuing any business relationship with Moss and, luckily, have found multiple other contractors that have been incredibly prompt with their proposal and stood by their word, but we wanted to provide this review for others that may have had a similar experience. It seems to me that either we ended up on a blacklist with this company (any reason escapes me) or that they are simply too large to handle a modest remodeling project to the point where you can “get lost in the mix” – TWICE apparently!

Brian Walker, the Moss handyman, did a fantastic job! He made my tired old vanity look new and up-to-date by raising it 3 inches and building a shelving unit that integrates seamlessly with the vanity. This required expert carpentry skills and a keen focus on quality. The result was wonderful! Brian also installed the vanity mirror, new plumbing fixtures, new light fixtures, and made a few other minor changes to the bathroom. The "Handyman for a Day" charge of about $500 was well worth it: I did not have to spend $1000+ for a new vanity, and I prevented sending a perfectly functional cabinet to the landfill. I am very pleased!

Dave arrived and was prompt and professional. He reviewed my list and and modified it as i requested. When the outside job was finished there was a lot of debris piled up. Dave asked me if i would like him to check to see if it could be picked up (this was not something I had contracted for). Dave made a phone call and Moss sent a large pick up truck and crew to clean all the debris (they filled the truck). When companies and employees go above and beyond the way Dave and Moss Home Services did, they earn my loyalty. I would highly recommend him. I will definitely use then again. We contracted with Moss, using an Angie's List deal for 8 hours of handyman work, and were very happy with the results. Michael, the handyman who was assigned to our project, was punctual, professional, polite, and did a fantastic job of removing an old laundry chute and shelving from a bedroom closet and repairing and finishing the drywall in the wall and ceiling. When Michael was finished with the work, he had not only completed the requested repairs, but also patched the holes in the rest of the closet and sanded all of the surfaces. We were ready to paint the closet and install new shelving when he left, which was a great value for us. We will definitely be using Moss again in the future.
Description of Work: Renovate a closet, including removal of framing, and drywall repair.
Moss is a very difficult company to work with. First round they sent sub-contractors out that did not do the job correctly. The sub-contractors were then followed by Moss employees that tore out and refinished portions of what the sub-contractors did incorrectly. A basic tub deck, shower wall retile with new glass shower door and walls was now going on eight weeks. Our faith was lost in their ability to get the job done right and in any kind of a timely fashion. They kept asking for more money which we were not going to provide until the job was complete. With their refusal to return we had no choice but to clean up the disarray they left behind and also hire another contractor to finish the job. Obvious events made it clear that it is a philosophy from the ownership down to disregard the concerns of the client and only assess the situation from their side exclusively.

We appreciate your feedback and take all concerns regarding our quality and customer service very seriously. When the sub-contractors who demo’d the wall in your shower did not demo the wall to the correct height, your MOSS team was able to easily fix this problem and continue with your project. While 8 weeks did pass from the time the contract was signed until the time you found another contractor, we could not begin renovations in your bathroom until your tile selections were made. Once your tile selections were made (4 weeks after the initial signing) we were able to promptly begin work on your project. Because of the tight deadline for your remodel, we worked diligently to complete your project, even when your at-start payment was not made. While we always want to ensure our customers’ needs are met, we cannot stray from the contract and waive the most important payment of a project. Your condition that we would not receive the at-start payment until we upgraded your shower door allowance was concerning to us, especially since we had already started work in order to complete the work in time. Receiving the at-start payment was non-negotiable for us and resulted in your search for another contractor. Our philosophy at MOSS is to take care of our customers and provide high quality work and a trustworthy home improvement process. We wish you the best of luck on future projects.

The provider was timely, friendly and well qualified for the tasks. The workers were respectful of our home, cleaned up after themselves, took care to protect our belongings and were otherwise quite friendly to our children. We would welcome them into our home again in a heartbeat. As with any project, we had a few decision points and items that needed to be revised. The provider spotted each one of these issues for us, raised them proactively, and implemented our decision. We had one mix-up, but it was noticed very quickly and remedied to our full satisfaction.
Description of Work: The provider built an new internal wall with a door, all matched to the existing trim in our house, and ran a new 220V electrical line for some kitchen equipment we were adding to that newly-created room.

The project was completed in a timely manner and was well done. Additional flashing was added to the french doors on the outside deck and many areas were caulked. The work was professional and looked wonderful when done. I would recommend Ramell and Moss Building and Design without hesitation and would use them for any additional projects I may have in the future.
Description of Work: There was a leak due to inadequate flashing on french doors - Moss Building and Design's representative, Ramell, evaluated the problem and suggested that additional flashing and caulking would fix the problem. Ramble was professional, knowledgeable and very skilled.

My old vanity was a well made cabinet of solid wood, but it was at a very low height. Also, the very wide makeup area under the counter was a waste of space. I asked for the counter to be salvaged, the vanity to be raised 3 inches, and a shelving unit to be created in the open space beside the vanity, and the whole thing must look like an integrated whole. I asked for new plumbing fixtures and light fixtures to be installed. Brian Walker of Moss Home Services did a spectacular job! He is an amazing carpenter! The vanity with the integrated shelving unit at a more functional height look wonderful. I am extremely pleased with the quality of the work, the professionalism of the handyman, and the great relationship with Moss Home Services. I have used them numerous times, and they remain my go-to company for home repairs and improvements. Thank you!
Description of Work: In one day, Brian Walker of Moss Home Services did a minor makeover of my hall bathroom, including raising the vanity, building an integrated shelving unit to fill the unused makeup space, installing new lighting and new plumbing fixtures.

He installed the chandeliers with no problems, and was very careful and meticulous in the way he primed and painted our wrought iron. He was flexible when I asked him to change tasks in the middle of a task due to my preference that he work on the pergola instead with the time left. Friendly and informative. Did the work quietly and was professional. Thanks very much.
Description of Work: Took off a chandelier and ceiling mount, attached two chandeliers; sanded outdoor banister and lintels, primed the banister, partially enameled the banister; partially stained a pergola; drilled some holes for a cat door on an indoor door.
