It went very well. They arrived on time, removed the old and installed the new in the same day, about 9 hours. The flooring looks great; I am very happy with the results. My only complaint was that they could have cleaned up better. I recommend Rick's very highly.
Description of Work: Installed hardwood flooring in kitchen and entryway. They first had to remove the old stone tile in the kitchen and remove the old vinyl that covered old hardwood in the entryway.

Overall, the experience from Ricks was poor and will never use or recommend this company.
Description of Work: In May 2005 we hired Rick’s Carpet and Flooring to install Mohawk wood flooring in our home. After installation we had an issue with the stair nose at the top of the stairwell to our basement being very loose. Rick’s came back and inspected the area and added more nails to the stair nose which seemed to fix the issue. Over time, however, the step slowly became loose again. In Jan 2011 we re-carpet our basement. We received estimates, many of the other estimators pointed out that the stair nose was not properly installed and recommended repairing prior to the carpet installation. It was also pointed out that the quarter round molding below the stair nose was also improperly installed, as it was tacked overtop the existing carpet. Prior to the carpet installation, we removed the improperly installed quarter round molding and removed the stair nose to see if we could determine what was causing the stair to be so loose. We were disturbed by what we found. The stair nose was shimmed by scraps of old carpet tack strips, old flooring and cardboard. We understand using scrap flooring to shim, however using carpet tack strips and bits of cardboard is completely unacceptable. Even though it was six years ago, the “Quality Installation” which we paid for was sorely lacking. We did contact Ricks when we discovered this and their response was lip service at best, they did finally come out to inspect it, but only after several letters sent and phone calls.
The experience went very well. They were very prompt and professional. They were also very friendly. Now it is just a matter of finding the product we want at the right price.
Description of Work: They came and took measurements for some new flooring.

They had to inspect whatever needed to be carpeted and it was approximately 13 to 14 steps. They were very helpful. They assisted me so that I didn’t have to choose from what was on the floor. They even took me back to look at the remnants and the savings were tremendous compared to another store. They were all very knowledgeable. The sales people were very helpful and professional. I would definitely use their services in the future too.

Great experience. I was out of town when they installed the carpet, but they did a wonderful job and cleaned up after themselves. I'm very happy with the quality of the carpet and the installation job.
Description of Work: I bought a new house that needed to replace carpet in the entire lower level. Checked around and found Rick's offered very competitive pricing and a great selection. The sales rep was very professional and patient when I went back and forth about the color.
Rick had the work done by a subcontractor. The subcontractor was quick, punctual, professional and did a superby job in finishing the stairs. Although two other contractors bid to do this work and Rick's gave the lowest bid, in the other two bids the contractor would have painted the stringers. Because the contractors bid on different tasks I was not able to determine how competitive Rick's price was for this work..
Description of Work: Remove finish from thirteen steps and a landing by sanding. Customer paints the stringers. Rick finishes the stairs by shellacking and then apply two coats of polyurethane.

Jonathan Greeson, the salesperson at Rick's did an excellent job in guiding us in our purchase by selecting the type of carpet that would be best for our application and by making us aware of the difference in installing carpet on stairs waterfall style or New York style. Without Jonathan's guidance we might have had the carpet installed water style and now that we know the difference, my wife and I greatly prefer New York style. Two carpet installers came on the scheduled date and time. They spoke good English, were polite, cleaned up and did an excellent job installing the carpet. We are very pleased with the result and with the process that led to the result.
Description of Work: Rick's removed carpeting from stairs and landing from stairs that connected ground floor and second floor and installed new carpeting in its place. Rick's installed a carpet runner on stairs and a landing that connected ground and basement floors.
Our work was completed through two contracts: one for the flooring work, and one for the other renovations. On the flooring side, we worked with Rob (sales) and Gus (refinisher), and had no complaints. They were responsive, on time, and honest. When the final coat on one floor showed some bubbles, Gus came back, buffed it out and added another coat, which seemed to fix it. Gus seamlessly wove in the existing wood floor to the newly installed kitchen wood floor. I would consider working with Gus again. Our experience on the "Home Improvement" side of Rick's was altogether miserable. First, we had to live without a kitchen (and for the most part without walls OR a floor!!) for six months -- from the time we signed the contract in May to the time they completed the work around Thanksgiving. The contractor was unresponsive, inexperienced and an alcoholic. It took him weeks to get our design to us, and then he would disappear for weeks more at a time. Workers would show up at the house once a week if we were lucky, and would stay for less than half a day. If the contractor came, he showed up at 11 o'clock or later. We complained to Rick's management, and eventually they fired him and put someone else on our job. Of course, a month later, we were told that the original contractor had been rehired and would be placed back on our job. By the time the renovation was complete, we had worked with 4 different "contractors." It was a circus. Additionally, we were told halfway through the job that, to make up for the delays and general incompetence, they would order custom cabinetry for us -- at no extra charge. We continued on the belief that they had ordered the cabinets. Then, JD, the manager, showed up at our house another month later to tell us that they were going to have to order the original cabinetry identified in the contract. This is when I lost it. Not only had they not ordered our cabinetry yet, but they wanted us to start from scratch--again! We ended up with the custom cabinets but had to split the difference in cost with them. Once they realized that they had no money left on our account (not surprising when a job takes 6 months), they began cutting back everywhere -- the "contractor" started doing work himself, but none of it was done correctly. He did the "plumbing" and cut a hole in our brand new kitchen floor in the wrong place! Then, he tried to repair it by gluing a square of laminate white oak in the hole -- we have red oak hardwood floors! (Thankfully, I called Gus and he fixed it...) Instead of following the specs to install the pop-up outlets in our brand new $7000 quartz countertop, he cut the holes too big so that the devices fell through the holes instead of resting on top of them -- and then he tried to say it was my fault because "I pushed too h****** them." Just one nightmare after another. I know this may be hard to believe -- but it actually gets worse. By the end of November, the kitchen was more or less complete. A few items remained and, given the experience up to then, I refused to pay the final $1000 on the $45K contract until all items were completed to my satisfaction. The day before Thanksgiving, while my entire family was at home and I was out shopping, I received a phone call from my husband that Rick's had shown up at the house to complete the last items, despite our specific request for them to wait until after the holidays. To boot, when my husband asked them to leave, they replied "You will have to call the police to get us to leave." "Unprofessional" just does not cover this. I understand that Rick's may have now stopped the home improvement part of their business. I hope this is true. Stay far, far away from this place.
Please accept my sincerest apology for any trouble or inconvenience you experienced with Rick's Home Improvement, Inc. I would like to note that Rick's Home Improvement, Inc., and Rick's Carpet and Flooring are not the same business enterprise. As you noted in your review, Rick's Home Improvement, Inc. is no longer doing business. However, Rick's Carpet and Flooring will continue, as we have for the previous 25 years, to consistently deliver quality flooring products and professional installation services to our customers. I assure you that your experience with Rick's Home Improvement, Inc., is not representative of the good quality work which was typically delivered by Rick's Home Improvement, Inc. However, as the owner of both Rick's Home Improvement, Inc. and Rick's Carpet and Flooring, I made the decision to close Rick's Home Improvement, Inc. after determining that Rick's Home Improvement, Inc. was not consistently delivering the exceptional quality of work that the customers of Rick's Carpet and Flooring have come to expect. I don't remember how much I spent with them. They were fine. I am now having a problem in one room with the carpeting coming up in the middle. I was going to find out what I can do about that, but I haven't done anything yet. They were pretty average. It is hard to tell about their price. I have been out of the country for 5 years. I didn't do my price comparison because I had no contact with the price. The quality seemed okay at the time. They were pretty good on punctuality. I would probably use them again in the future.

This was very easy from start to finish and took less than a week from my first visit to the store to the finished project. We had shopped around and returned to Rick's because of previous jobs they had completed to our satisfaction. The showroom staff was helpful and knowledgable. We ordered the flooring but did not initially schedule the installation as we needed some time to pack up books, boxes, etc. When a death in the family forced us to prepare for a houseful of guests - we needed the installation expedited so that we could put the furniture back before family arrived. Rick's was very accommodating in scheduling the installation according to our needs. The installers arrived promptly, worked hard and did a wonderful job. They went the extra mile in locating and repairing squeaks in the sub flooring and making an attractive transition between stairway and upstairs hall. The installation staff was polite, cheerful and meticulous - not only in their craftsmanship, but in cleaning up after themselves. We are delighted with our new laminate flooring!

We had a good experience at the showroom where the salesman was VERY patient with us. We finally arrived at a decision for a Silestone counter top, DuraCeramic floor and glass tile back splash (DuraCeramic is a hybrid vinyl/ceramic product, and it wears like ceramic but is softer on the feet.) The quote came in at about $7500 which was less than I expected. In particular, the floor was about $2000 vice a bid from Dominion Floors for $2700. We decided to use Rick's. The counter top installer came a couple of days later, measured and said that the "L" in our counter would be cut from one piece. The next day, the salesman called my wife (I was unreachable) and told her than a single piece for the "L" would make the counter top cost twice as much. Since $$$ was very important to us, she said to make it two pieces and was assured that the seam would be almost invisible. The installation began, and the piece on one set of cabinets (a straight section and the "L" were separated by the stove) was beautiful. I went away only to come back an look at the two piece "L". I was astonished! THEY SEAMED IT ON BOTH SIDES OF THE SINK CUTOUT; it COULD NOT have been more visible - it was the first thing I saw when I came into the kitchen. I was LIVID! Then my wife showed up and went ballistic, not because of the seam, but because the two parts of the counter top DID NOT MATCH! We were unhappy campers. The installers (there's is small firm, they cut and finished the top along with installing it) were VERY sympathetic and said they would do whatever it took to make the customer happy; if I wanted it seamed in a different place or a one piece counter top, they would do that. I called the salesman who promised to take care of the problem. Several emails to the salesman ensued, but I didn't hear from him until two days later. I had already called the counter top people and told them to make it one piece, and he said they would. Then came several calls from the salesperson, and he finally told me the additional cost would be about $560 (NOT twice as much as he told my wife). He told me the extra cost was due to the "waste" of cutting an "L", to which I replied, "Well, just have them bring me the waste - it should be about 6 feet long and 2 ft wide" and the salesman said "they will do that." We'll see if we get that. THEN the salesman said we needed to schedule the plumber. "What plumber" I asked, and he told me the plumber would hook up the faucet and the disposal" and I told him to send him quickly after installation since our kitchen had been without a sink for three days now. Then he says the cost will be $250!!! I was far more surprised than pleased, but was quite happy with myself for not telling the salesman what he could do with his plumber. We are going to do that ourselves. As I am writing this, the counter top installers are working away on the "L" - so the overall verdict on the installation is still out. But there were just TOO MANY surprises from Rick's - (1) the quote was for a seamed installation which they didn't tell us when we signed the contract; (2) the additional cost of the counter top; (3) the plumber! The latest thing came up this morning when I told the installer I was so glad we had chosen this particular Silestone - to which he replied that the counter top was granite, not Silestone as we thought! This is really getting old... It just seems to me, and I may be very wrong, that the sales technique used was to get the customer under contract, then raise the price (and profit) so the customer gets what he/she wants. Use Rick's? - Never again. But, to be fair, we still have the backsplash and floor to install, and they may do a wonderful job on that. I'll update when that occurs in a couple of weeks.
Description of Work: Counter top, DuraCeramic floor, glass tile back splash.
I visited their showroom to get some flooring ideas. The salesman, JD, was very helpful in explaining the different types of products and their applications. He came by my condo a few days later to take measurements. Again, he answered all my questions and taught me quite a bit about my gyp-crete subfloor. At the time, he gave me an unofficial estimate of 2600, which included taking up the old carpet and padding, and installing 300 square feet of Mohawk laminate flooring, trim, etc. and a cork underlayment. I asked him to email a detailed quote to me when he got back to the office. In the meantime, my condo association informed me I could only use a felt underlayment. That was fine with me because it was cheaper. I called JD and asked him to note the change. A few hours later, I got the quote, which included felt instead of cork, but it was 3000 for 343 square feet. I asked why the square footage was higher, and he said they add 10% for a margin of waste. He never mentioned that at my house. Even so, 10 per cent of 300 is 30, so I asked where the extra 13 square feet came from. He said he would check his measurements and reply back later. I never heard from him again. Another salesperson left a follow-up voice mail a few weeks later, but I didn't bother to call back. While I was initially impressed, ultimately the price shuffling deterred me from using their services.

My experience with them was nothing but good. The price was definitely good. It costed me $1200. The service was very good. They did clean up after themselves. They did one thing that they did not have to do. It had no charge. I had a small piece of carpet left over and they installed it in a closet for me. Everything was good with them.
Description of Work: Rick's Carpet & Flooring Showcase installed carpets in 2 rooms in November last year.
It went well. Rick's was very responsive about getting back to me as we had to reschedule the services numerous times because of the weather (Snowpocolypse). I am impressed with the work they did, particularly the fireplace which replaced cheap peel & stick tile the previous occupants had used. Rick's also gave me a good deal on the tile as it was leftovers from a previous project that happened to match the colors I was looking for. My only complaint was the two gentleman who installed the laminate didn't seem to know the schedule or what work they were supposed to do. I had to have the subfloor replaced in a few places and they came ready to install everything. They also put a small whole in my ceiling somehow, but I was able to fix that. Otherwise, they did a good job installing and finishing the laminate.
Description of Work: I went in just to buy carpet and laminate flooring but ended up using their handymen service to remove and install bathroom vanities and to tile the fireplace.

I had a kitchen and other areas of my home remodeled in 2008. Rick's was chosen for the flooring because of their reputation in the area. Sales was great. Greg Homer was a pleasure to work with and helped tremendously in my selections. I had ceramic tile flooring and a backsplash installed in my kitchen, hardwood in my dining room, entry hall and powder room. All were done exceptionally well. The following year, 2009, I decided to have an addtional backsplash done to match the earlier one. I made numerous calls to make sure that the correct grout color had been ordered because a change was made during the previous installation to a different color than the floor grout to provide a better match. I was assured that there would be no problem. The installers came, completed installing the tile and when I walked into the kitchen during the grouting I knew immediately that the wrong grout was being put on. I phoned the store and was assured that this would be taken care of. I've made many attempts in person and by phone over the last year to have this resolved and to this day, I have two different color grouts in my kitchen, even though manager J.D. said it would be handled quickly. Almost a year later and I'm still waiting for it to be resolved. For the total amount spent on all the flooring and backsplashes, they did a good job, but when they make a mistake they don't want to own up to it. So I'd give them a B-.

AWFUL experience with Rick's Carpet. I wish I had known about Angie's list before hand and read the reviews. I have never in my life had such a bad experience. I first signed my contract mid-November 2009. It is now March 11 and the project is not complete. I ordered tile, a heating pad for the tile, carpet and binding. They had to measure THREE times. The tile I originally ordered which was displayed on the floor was discontinued ... but, I was not told that for at least two weeks. They were going to install on a Thursday, Friday and Saturday. When they came on Thursday, after I took a day off work, they only dropped off their supplies. When I was upset with them, they didn't understand why. They did end up working on Sunday as a result, but only after I had to get extremely upset with the sales manager, The electrician first installed the floor heater at 110 volts even thought it clearly stated 220 volts on the box. (I know this because he told me.) He didn't put a kickplate on the wire -- which is required by code -- which meant when the floor trim was put in, it went through the wire requiring a need for re-wiring. A project manager came out to look at it. He had no background in electicity so another person had to come out. When they ordered the binding for the carpet (in late January after I signed the contract in mid-November!!), they didn't order enough. So, further delays. When the carpet was first scheduled for installation, I waited until noon (they were supposed to be there at 8:00). When I called, they told me he wasn't coming but would come the following Saturday. I called the following Friday at 5:00 PM. The manager had no idea whether or not the carpet guy was going to be there on Saturday (he wasn't). When the carpet was first installed, it was off-center (and I don't mean by a little) ... and it was not firmly nailed/glued in place so they had to come back out and do it. I called the general manager on Wednesday (3/10) to see if the new thermostat had come in. It hadn't. I called him this morning to see if it had come in. He said he would call me right back ... he still hasn't and didn't answer my second call. My VISA was charged for completed work and it is still not completed. Do not, not, not use this company. I have never written a bad review before. This was / still is AWFUL.

They did not use the right materials. I had a three week wait while they re-ordered. They were supposed to lay down waterproof flooring which we paid extra for. Instead they laid down plywood. They had to rip up the plywood and lay down the right floor. As far as pricing, he was right in line with another quote we had. However, every time we tried to call and talk to a salesperson or manager we were put off. They laid tile about 8 years ago for us and I asked them to cut the tile to match the wall. They cut it too short and it then did not meet the wall. They also tiled the front entry way and it was not trimmed off properly. I had to make them come back and correct it before I would pay the balance. The product has not held up either. It dents too easily and tile is cracked.

Walked into their store knowing what hardwood we wanted installed (had seen it at lowes down the street) and knowing the price of the floor at lowes ($4.50/sq ft for floor alone). Salesmen met us and seemed eager to get our business. We were somewhat suprised that we couldn't get any pricing for the materials in the showroom - but didn't press the issue too much becuase we knew the approx. cost of the wood type we had selected. The quote we received to floor 715 sq ft of our currently empty (no furnitute to move) condo was $9,600 (not incl taxes). We were hoping to get the work done quickly - but the quote came in so much higher than expected that we had to go get 2 other quotes on the install using the exact same wood, trim, etc. The other quotes came in at $7,400 and $6,300. A week after receiving Rick's quote -and after having taken the time to get the other quotes - we received a phone call that they were holding a "super sale" if we purchased the floor and install immediately - and that they would drop the price $1,500. We were really dissapointed that we had to spend so much of our time arranging to get the other quotes - and that Rick's only dropped their price after we didn't immediately purchase through them. We felt like the "super sale" technique was something used by a used car salesman in a movie. We walked away w/ a very negative view of both their pricing and sales techniques.

We ordered cork flooring and bathroom tile from Rick's. Rick's did not do the installation, which was done by our contractor. From start to finish, the experience was very frustrating. The salesperson, Colin (who has since been let go), helped us select the tile in the showroom, which went fine, but he did not tell us the correct kind of bullnose tile to use for our project despite our detailed description of the arrangement. We only found that out much later when our contractor began installation, and then we had to order more tile and we are stuck with useless tile. The main problem was repeated delays and having to call over and over again to get our tile. First, they delivered the wrong tile. Then we had to take it back and they said they would have the right one waiting for us. When we arrived, they did not have it. We had to go back at least twice more before they actually had it. And at that point, we had to literally go into their warehouse and find it for them, and then argue with them about whether it was our tile (it was). Meanwhile, we had to make repeated phone calls as the delays mounted week after week. In the end, it took more than 2 months AFTER the expected delivery date before we got our tile. Unfortunately, for other reasons, the project was then put on hold for nearly a year. When we discovered at that point that we needed a little bit more accent tile, Rick's couldn't find any record of our order at first. They eventually did find our order and made an attempt to order more of the tile for us from Mohawk, but told us that Mohawk has no record of that item number. We found the item online and ordered it, and we do not plan to use Rick's again.
Description of Work: We purchased tile and flooring, but no installation services.

Rick's flooring subcontracted out work on our wood floors, and that individual did a fantastic job. HOWEVER, when it came to our carpeting, I have never had such a terrible customer service experience. They provided a total estimate that included one of our bathrooms, but when it came time for installation, they did not order enough. They initially acknowledged their mistake and said they would make it right, but then continued to put us off with a series of lies when we called to inquire as to the status. First we were told it was on backorder, then it was stuck in the warehouse, then it was never ordered...I finally called and spoke with a manager who FINALLY (6 months later) ordered the carpet and had the carpet delivered and installed. In the process of discussing this issue with one of our realtors, she indicated that she lost her voice screaming at them for their terrible service. I would go out of my way to steer people away from this company. Their alleged excellent customer service is a ruse.
Description of Work: Wood floors refinished in 3 bedrooms and a hallway and carpet installed in 3 rooms and a stairway.

Sales staff was helpful and nice. However when the carpet arrived - the one for the sunroom was wrong. I had to wait an extra week for the right carpet but the second time they brought the wrong padding - so again I had to wait another week. It was a little frustrating - but it worked out.
Description of Work: Replaced carpet in the sunroom and one bedroom.
