Lesson Learned? Garage door openers and service are expensive. However, I have a 1 yr warranty from him (and he wrote this down for me) that stated if I had any problems, he would drive down and repair/replace for free, next 4 yrs was on Chamberlains warranty. While I couldve paid for the opener myself (I found online for $270), I know I'm out of touch with my tools and would have spent a whole day replacing the opener. Considering its a 3hr round trip for him (and he did this twice), and his superb responsiveness/punctuality, when all things considered, i saved. It was otherwise a nice repair if he did not try to lie about me not holding down the button long enough. Telling someone they are not operating a remote correctly after they have been using it for 7 years with no problem is not bright.
Description of Work: I had just arrived home for Saturday after being out. As I was parking, my garage door wouldnt open. I had to go inside the house and manually open the garage door. I called nearly every garage door business within a 80mile radius and had no responses, like it is these days, just answering machines as excuses. What garage door business would be closed on 2 out of 7 days of the week, at least have someone on call. Within the next 4 hrs the gentleman drove 70 miles to my location and resolved my problems. One of my springs broke. Not only did he replace it, but he also replaced my tangled pulleys and wires. After testing the garage door several times, he went on his way. Later in the day I was leaving for an errand and the door would not open. Called him back and he returned on Tuesday. While this was not his fault as he did test it, I have no one to blame, just unfortunate. Tuesday he returned and tried to make a liar out of me. As i was demonstrating that the door would start to open but then stop and close, it wouldnt, it was working as intended. He then told me that I was not holding down the remote button down long enough (I've been using this remote for 7 years). I told him he needed to come up with a better story. After about 5 more tries and the garage door stopped making a liar out of me, it stopped working. He said its too hot and unplugged the garage door opener. After waiting 15 minutes, he told me to try again... but this time, I told him to push the actual control panel buttons. Sure enough, with the remote "story" out of the picture, he pushed the button on the garage control panel, and it had the same symptoms. This time he said that your garage door opener needs to be replaced. He said that you have new springs, new wires, but the opener is too old (its been used since 1999 but in a period of 4 days (since he came), it got old? I told him to come up with a better story. This is why the FAIR professionalism. It wouldve been LOUSY if he did not, in the end, say, I cannot tell you whats wrong other than I have replaced everything with new, and the only thing I dont know about is your old garage door opener. He charged me $160 for the spring/pulley + emergency repair (Saturday). Now he wants another $350 to replace the garage door opener. I told him he was out of his mind if he thought I was going to pay $510 ($160+350) for a new spring and a new garage door opener assembly. He said garage door opener assembly is always $350, and a spring replacement is always $160. Since my garage door opener was out of business, I asked if he could make a compromise as I dont have this kind of cash sitting around (yes, cash only). He replaced my never-working second garage door pulley, wires, and also a broken spring, and replaced my out-of-service garage door opener. for the same price. Why did I do this? Lowes was the only other who picked up the phone. Lowes would charge me $39 to give someone a call (I called everyone else on Angies list by the way). Then said no one would arrive till middle of next week, and they have their own rates, and would require at least two visits; 1 to check out the situation (and $90 for that), and the 2nd to replace any parts (another $90, plus parts and labor = $300 for garage door opener (Chamberlain 1/2hp belt model) plus 1hr-2hrs of labor = . I told Lowes I already know whats wrong, why charge me double? I was told it doesnt matter what you think is wrong, they have to look at it.
