Everything went smooth. I felt comfortable leaving a key for them each morning and trusting everything would be fine and look great upon my return from work each evening. The job was finished in the estimated amount of time and the couple occasions when his employees were still working when I got home from work they were very professional and courteous to me and my family. The floor tile selection went smoothly, even via text and email and I am very impressed with the final product and quality of work. Currently waiting on a quote for my next project...I will use them again.
Description of Work: I remodeled my entryway and needed someone to lightly texture the ceiling after I removed the popcorn finish. I also needed a new closet wall framed out and sheetrock installed as well as a new porcelain tile floor. While there I asked them to finish the ceiling and floor in the half bath that I was remodeling as well.
I found Phillip on Angie's List. This is my first purchased home and the first time I had any major repair work. I initially called him to come give estimates on a variety of cosmetic and remodeling projects I am anxious to start. He showed up the next day and we did a thorough walk through with my to do list. As we were completing our conversation, Phillip noticed I had some rotting wood at the base of my patio door (on the inside of the living room). Upon further inspection, there was also water damage with the flooring in the living room (small area), the flagstone patio outside, and the patio entry stair was higher than the threshold of the doors. The patio doors I knew were cheap to begin with, and I had also noticed when it rained the water would splash over the outdoor threshold and sometimes into the house. Of course I was disappointed at first that I was going to have to address these repairs instead of making the house "pretty". I was appreciative that Phillip took the time to explain to me that if I waited too long, the issue could become much larger over time (possibly termites or worse). Even though my renovations were likely a much larger and beneficial job for his company, he advised me that repair should take precedence. At first I was a bit shell shocked with the estimate of what the repairs would cost (again first time home buyer). After doing some research of my own on the cost of the materials, I confirmed that what Phillip quoted me was very reasonable. We replaced the patio doors with energy efficient fiber glass that has a lengthy warranty. Gutters were added to redirect the rain to my outdoor patio drains preventing further damage. The entry stair for the patio was removed and made shorter in height so that the water was no longer running underneath the doors inside to the living room floor. I had an extra box of my laminate flooring in the garage and his team replaced the damaged floor in the living room for free. The repaint of the patio ceiling and painting the new gutters to match my trim was done with the paints that I already had in my garage to alleviate further expense to me. Unrelated to their tasks: while the team was here I noticed a foul smell taking over the back of the house. Phillip came inside and determined it was my plumbing vents (the pvc pipes coming out of the roof) that were for some reason sealed! He took before and after photos of the pipes and repaired them at no additional cost. Also when he came to my front door for the first visit I couldn't even open it for him. He also fixed this for free. One of the items on my original list was to repair the crack across the patio, they also repaired this at very minimal cost. When his team was done, the first big rain came the following day and small adjustments that needed to be made were visible. He had them back out to complete these that same week. I very much appreciated that Phillip went out of his way to make my repairs as painless as possible by fixing extra things (at no charge) so I could see as many results as possible when his team was done. I look forward to working with the company again on renovations and further repairs that come along.
Description of Work: Had water damage on patio doors, ceiling, flagstone, interior wall, interior laminate flooring
This is the third job we?ve done with HRR services - so I understood the capabilities of the company and Phillip Warwick prior to starting. I am also a handyman myself and can do many of the tasks I contracted him to do, I just don?t have the time. I?ll go room by room and provide a little detail on the last job. General: My wife and I did most of the demo with the exceptions of the three bathrooms. Doors: All the doors in the house were sub par. We gave some direction on what we wanted and Phillip did a good job with choosing the right doors. Kitchen and Breakfast: When we purchased this house, the kitchen was a 1972 mess! I wanted to tear out all the cabinets and Phillip said it would be better to save them. That was a good call. I sanded down all the cabinets and rebuilt the doors. Phillips guys did a great job with sanding prep and paint on the cabinets. They repaired the sheet rock and floated out such that you could not tell it was ever patched. He also installed a designer vent hood and dishwasher. Den: I tore out all the old paneling walls (two layers) down to studs. Phillip?s guys installed sheet rock trimmed out and painted. The room looked great. Dinning: There was no scope here except the mirror removal. We forgot to include that in the scope during the bid. One afternoon I dropped by the site and the mirrors were gone, walls floated and painted. He charged next to nothing for this work. Utility Bath: Phillip removed the existing tile and toilet, demoed the vanity. The window was beyond repair and he replaced that as well. After tile, vanity and counters were installed, the he painted and added the new toilet. Hall Bath: During demo, the tub was damaged and I felt like it could not be repaired. Phillip replaced it at his expense. He also repaired the vanity, did the paint, plumbing, tile and toilet. Master Bedroom: This room was mostly paint, however, we moved the door going to the master bath. Phillip was able to match the texture in the walls such that you really could not tell after paint that it had been moved. Master Bath: This room was a big deal. We put in a new tub (there was no tub before), moved and enlarged the shower and put in a new closet. Phillip put in a new toilet, new window and installed a purchased vanity. The tiling in this room was very upscale and Phillip?s team did a great installation. When finished, this room looked great. Remainder: Phillip did touch-up paint in various places that needed it at a reasonable price. Other Comments: You can always reach Phillip via text. He will respond even when on vacation. Phillip was always happy to meet us at the job site if we had questions. Phillip was willing to work with other contractors on the same site (this is not always easy...) Phillip was flexible with us regarding schedule (I needed some time to finish my scope so he could do his).
Description of Work: Paint in kitchen, appliance installation, sheet rock, paint and trim in den, 3 bath restorations, three doors and two windows, paint in master, den and touch-up in other areas.

Plain and simple, this guy is a fraud! I had 2 service visits from the owner, Mr. Phillip Warwick. The second visit was to correct inefficiencies from the first visit and for some new items. This cost me additional money for the repairs to the repairs. Mr. Warwick mainly supervises his employees, who may or may not be illegal immigrants. And by supervise, I mean that Mr. Warwick spends the majority of the time berating and speaking in an inappropriate manner to his employees. My wife and I both felt badly for the workers, as the comments that they were forced to receive were inappropriate and offensive to say the least. Furthermore, Mr. Warwick made racially offensive remarks in regards to one of my neighbors. The ceiling fans, the grout work, the lighting installation, the chandelier installation, and the faucet installations went well. The television installation is another story. My primary television was installed, but Mr. Warwick had to return in order to make the installation look acceptable by installing trim at our request, as after his first attempt, there was exposed wall beneath the television. The surround sound, after 2 attempts, still does not work properly. I refused to pay for a third visit to correct a problem that was not properly fixed on the first visit. Mr. Warwick also managed to sell us on the need for a blue tooth device to connect the audio, gaming, and DVD system to the television. Mr. Warwick sold us on a $500 piece of equipment that does not work. Mr. Warwick refuses to refund the costs and has offered to return (for a fee) in order to reset the device. It should also be noted that Mr. Warwick collected a personal check for this equipment, but will not provide a receipt. By not providing a receipt for this equipment, I am unable to claim the sales tax on this purchase for Federal Tax purposes. Furthermore, I am unable to check on warranty information as well. This equipment retails at numerous stores for $439.99, yet Mr. Warwick billed me $500 for this piece of equipment. In regards to the second television installation, Mr. Warwick completed this task himself. Mr. Warwick installed a bracket with a shelf, and simply connected the cable box to the television, leaving the wiring exposed. This was unacceptable. After returning the second time, and at my expense, Mr. Warwick ran the wiring through the wall. Mr. Warwick patched the wall with the quality and precision of a 4th grader, as demonstrated in accompanying photos. In regards to the hanging of the closet door, again, this work was pitiful to say the least. The door is crooked and misaligned, which is reprehensible since Mr. Warwick claims that doors are his specialty. As clearly demonstrated in accompanying photo, the door was so misaligned, that I am able to see into the closet itself. Finally, since we had just moved from out of state, we had a sofa and love seat which was less than 2 years old, that we intended to donate to a charitable organization. Mr. Warwick convinced us to donate these goods to his church, and offered to provide a receipt from a recognized charitable organization. Mr. Warwick took possession of the furniture and failed to provide a receipt. When confronted, Mr. Warwick has provided a plethora of excuses. I still have not received a receipt. In short, this provider is a fraud! The fact that he openly touts himself as a, "good Christian", makes me sick to my stomach as he has lied, and stolen from me. Lesson learned, and I will not recommend nor use this provider for anything in the future. I consider my payments for services to be a cost for a lesson learned, and I am positive that I will never see the receipt that was promised to me again. The services that I received from HRR Services was sub-par to say the least. After the initial service, Mr. Warwick had to return to make repairs to his repairs. This was done at my expense. Upon completion, even though the work was not performed satisfactorily, I was not going to have Mr. Warwick return only to charge me again. UPDATE Since posting my factual review, Mr. Warwick has contacted me via e-mail and is threatening and harassing me because of this review. This action is deplorable.
Description of Work: Installed 4 ceiling fans Wired two televisions, one with surround sound Installed 2 faucets Installed 3 light fixtures Installed 1 chandelier Grouted 1 small bathroom Installed 1 closet door Grouted fireplace

Response from Houston Repair & Remodeling
I am a fraud! How dare you!!!! I am fully aware of how you are as well. We responded properly and many times you never got back with us. I am not going to take this laying down. All items you mentioned were never shown to me as a problem. You said you were fully satisfied and very pleased. You sir are the fraud, you have made criminal accusations and have never asked for anything to be reworked for service or confronted me. I responded to you each time and never have left you in a lurch. I don't berate my men and as for your neighbor I never made a racist comment. We were talking about the fact that he let his dog crap in your yard and how upset we all get when that happens. You are just upset about paying money to fix a house you bought sight unseen. I will post this on all my web media and Angie's list. Phillip Warwick General Manager HRR Services

decks, handyman service

I will start by saying I am very particular and probably a little hard to work for. I have used HRR Services for several projects, this being the most expensive and largest. Past work has always been done by Phillip himself, with him bringing in 1 or 2 assistants as needed, and overall I have been very pleased. I went into this project with total confidence that he would do a good job. Phillip was very prompt in meeting with me to review the job. It was decided his crew would do demolition, he would then give me some time to make a final decision on the specifics of the replacement deck as I needed to adjust my original plan due to price quotes I was receiving. I received a verbal estimate based on anticipated dimensions. Demolition took less time than anticipated, Phillip was then ready to start the project immediately. I made some quick decisions on doing the deck based on existing footprint with minor modifications on where the upper and lower level split would be and where the deck would end. I added in painting siding adjacent to the new deck at Phillips suggestion. We discussed where the downspout extensions needed to go, that was an add- on but that price was not discussed. We decided to wait to finalize lighting and any additional railings til the deck was done. When the deck surface was completed, we met to discuss railings and lighting. I had an existing electrical line with 1 outlet and 1 switch, wiring already running to a second outlet area with cover plate only. Phillip did the electrical work himself: added a light fixture, 2 electric outlets. This work appears professional, grey conduit to the floodlight along the outer side of the fireplace/away from the deck, matching the brick. Everything is cleanly secured, nicely done and in good working order. We discussed railings, but nothing was in writing. This is where the communication broke down. I said I did not want a heavy look: options were discussed and I agreed to a top rail 1x4(mistake). I do NOT have any deck building experience and had no idea this would not be a good option. We also discussed caps for the posts. When the railings were done I felt something was off but did not say anything as the caps still were not there. Phillip added the caps when he did the electrical work. When I returned home after that was completed it looked worse! There was a corner post off square that I had not noticed. The cap on top made it stand out as an obvious mistake. The balance was off. The railing looked cheap and flimsy. I had to go online and research how to build deck railings. There was no vertical trim board under the horizontal top rail, and everything I found indicated the top rail should be a 2x6 for the type of rail I was having made. The top rail was replaced and trim board added today. The off square post was corrected as much as possible. That corner of the deck itself is not at a 90 degree angle. The railing looks better but it still is not quite right. The carpenter tried to trim the top rail corners to make it look better but something is still a little off. I hope that when it is all stained a uniform color it will blend and look more cohesive. What I learned from this experience is as follows: 1. Always have everything in writing before a job starts: diagrams, photos, dimensions, product, pricing. Some of the 'add on' items pricing was not discussed til end invoice was presented. There was no invoice or written agreement prior to project near completion. 2. Ask how much experience the crew being used has in your particular project, and get references for that type of work even if you trust the contractor. 3. Be present each and every day a some point when work is in progress. I would still consider HRR Services for handyman type repairs. I think this was a job they were not experienced enough to do as well as it could and should have been done. The actual deck looks good, but following the prior 'footprint' was taken too literally. A call to me regarding some minor adjustments would have prevented the off square corner issues. Little extras were done and I really appreciate that. When I mentioned the printing on the deck boards was something I was going to have to sand out, Phillip immediately had one of the guys taking care of it. Phillip added in extra siding painting on an adjacent area and did some roof cleaning in the areas they were painting without additional charges. Site clean up was excellent. Crew was respectful and pleasant.
Description of Work: Removal of large existing deck, removal of wooden play structure. Built new deck, smaller size but based on original footprint of part of the original deck; add a light fixture and additional outlet, replace existing outlet with electric already run in the area; paint house siding in deck area; replacement of 2 gutter downspout extensions with trenching to route water under deck toward lawn.

The scheduling service was great, there was a delaying in the estimator to arrive and the scheduling service called numerous times to let me know an approximate time of arrival. Once the estimator showed us, he seemed rushed. Was only here about 10 minutes. He took no measurements and actually didn't wait for me to fully explain what I wanted done. His estimate didn't include painting in other rooms that I also wanted to have work done in as well. I won't be using their service. When I compared what they were doing to what the insurance company was paying for the estimate came in a little higher than what the insurance would allow or pay. Since this appointment seemed so rushed, I am not sure if they will give the attention that I am wanting to get this job done.

The worker showed up in a timely manner, as promised. He was professional looking and acting. I left him home to complete the job by himself, while I went to work. When we returned home the job was completed as promised. A very nice, neat job was done and the area was cleaned up after completion. I do beleive that they have grown too busy and are either not interested in taking just any job and/or they try to avoid using the phone as their primary source of communication. (Which isn't really best for me unless you are a personal friend or family.) This job was bid early in the year. The original request was to do this work, install a gate in the back of the fence, and install a storage building. We ended up having someone else install the building and did not have the work on the two gates done at that time. I called on 9/10/13 to see if I could get someone out to do the gate repair as my dog escaped while we were at work. The person who answered the phone remembered me, said they would pull the prior bid and get back with me. After receiving no call back, my husband called late the next day to talk to them about doing the work on both gates, as originally discussed, but with changes. No one ever returned my husband's call either. After a few days I noticed that I had an email from them re-sending the original bid with no mention of doing the second gate or if someone would need to first come out to provide a bid on the changes to the second gate work. I responded to the email, asking what steps needed to be taken and needed clarification quickly (meaning a phone call) as I needed to get something done with the broken gate soon so that the dog would not again get out. At this point I am completely discouraged at the unability to speak with a live person, but did receive a rather cryptic email stating they would be there in the "AM". With still no acknowledgement of our numerous requests to include the addition of the back gate and still no phone calls, nor a clear understanding of what day in the "AM" someone was going to show up on, I asked for clarification of the day the work was schedule. Fortunately, someone showed up as scheduled and completed the repair on the broken gate. The next day after the work was performed I finally recieved a phone call from someone requesting I mail the payment. Even then she did not want to give me the address over the phone but wanted to email or text it to me? Even at that, I never received that email or text providing me with their mailing address. We decided to look further for someone to perform the rest of the work.

We asked Phil to help us with an unfinished mahogany stained glass door that had lots of issues. The end result looks amazing. It was beautifully stained and finished with new hardware. We had him build the custom door frame and had all of the outside trim painted on the house. The work was completed when promised.I was impressed at how the workmen treated my house and yard with respect and did not leave any debris behind. They were very professional. The work exceeded our expectations and we would definitely recommend HHR to others.

When the removal of heavy vegetation by the side of my house revealed a faucet that I hadn't known about, I was dismayed to find that the builder had connected it to the hot water pipe. I had new landscaping and needed to be able to use the faucet. I called Houston Repair and Remodeling, thinking that I needed a general contractor who could not only do the plumbing work, but also break through the brick veneer to get at the pipes and then restore the brick veneer. I wondered if my job was too small for them, but Philip came out promptly, and he had a thorough look at the pipes in the attic and in my bathrooms, to understand how the connections had been made. He was trying to avoid, if possible, having to go through the brick. While he was in the attic, he commented on a split vent pipe from the stove that needed fixing - very fast and easy to do, but I never would have noticed. As he worked he way through the water pipes and we talked, it was very clear that he is knowledgeable, skilled and very thorough. He ended up concluding that to maintain the original faucet, it would in fact be necessary to break through the brick, which would be an expensive ($1000) job. Then he noticed some exterior, above-ground pipes for the sprinkler system and he proposed a much cheaper solution - run a new pipe and faucet off the sprinkler pipe and cap off the original faucet. The price would be $325. I thought that was a great solution! He also noted that the exposed sprinkler pipes needed to be insulated, which the sprinkler contractor had neglected to do. He came out the next day while I was at work to do the job. He insulated those pipes and also tested the entire sprinkler system, locating a broken head that needed replacement. His assistant called me to get my OK for an additional $40 charge, but I was away from my phone. When she called later that day to get my credit card information for the $365 charge, I agreed to the extra without any problem, but I was charged only the original $325 quoted. I'm assuming that this is an example of Philip's principled business practices. I really appreciate people who go the extra step to do things right, even if they are not entirely in the frame of the original problem. Philip could have ignored the sprinkler pipe insulation problem and I would never have noticed. Testing the sprinkler system was also an added bonus. Houston Repair and Remodeling is now definitely my first choice for future repairs on my house.
Description of Work: Routed a new outdoor faucet from the sprinkler system, replacing and capping off the existing outdoor faucet, which the builder had connected to the hot water pipe.
Phillip was easy to talk and work with throughout the project. He was fair in his pricing, and he did high quality work that made me feel proud to sell the home. The prior owner left me with a lot of W** moments as we stumbled upon complete rig jobs from his prior installs (magnetic kick plates to cover rotted wood, who does that?). Each time, Phillip talked me though what needed to be done to make it right. Again, because of Phillip (and Angie's List contractors in general) I feel good about handing our home off to another family. I would not hesitate to recommend HRR's work to friends or family.
Description of Work: Phillip came for a water heater install, and I ended up hiring him on to finish our home remodel. I was fighting to get things tied up to get our home on the market, and Phillip got us there in spectacular fashion. He did landscaping, countertop framework repair/leveling, sheetrock repair, interior and exterior door install, painting, cabinet install, appliance install, packing/decluttering and house staging.

Called on a Monday to see if I could get someone to come out and tell me about fixing a jacuzzi tub in a house I am buying. He was able to work me in about an hour and a half later which was great because I was at the end of the 10 day limit on negotiations. He was early and spent time really looking over the tub and answering questions. In the end, the cost was not worth it to me because I really didn't want one of those tubs anyway. However, I do not feel that the estimate was unreasonable. He then talked about replacement cost for another tub which I followed up on and found his estimate to be spot on. He also told me that the tub was just fine for a soaker and was clean. The jets looked like they hadn't been used in quite some time. He also told me how to keep the jets clean with a 10% solution of cholorox every six months. I came away feeling very grateful for his input and that I could now make an informed decision.
The work was inferior and the quote was very misleading.

I called Phillip on Monday and he returned my call later that day. I explained what I needed done and the specifics (linear feet and ceiling heighth) of the room. Phillip stated he would text me a bid site unseen. I was impressed because I had a fair idea of what it might cost. I had already scheduled an appointment with another contractor the next day. I had not received Phillip's text yet and assigned the job to other contractor. When I called Phillip re: the bid he stated he had sent it. My phone, sadly did not receive it. Phillip's bid was lower. I think in part because the other contractor had to travel further to my location. I still have other jobs that need doing, so I will call him again.
Description of Work: Estimate painting and installation of crown molding.
Phillip arrived as scheduled, the work proceeded without any difficulties. Everything was done professionally and completely and looks great!

I contacted Phillip for repair to an exterior gate. This involved removing broken hinges and latch mechanism and replacing these items. Repair was done in my absence. When I checked the gate I found the latch mechanism was not working properly. It was flimsy and hard to open, appeared rigged up, unprofessional in appearance and not appropriate. I have worked with this company before and had good service and response, so I did not hesitate to pay the total invoice amount prior to Phillip returning to adjust the latch. This was the end of July. Today is September 22nd. I now have a gate latch that will not open at all and in spite of multiple contacts and multiple promises to be here to make adjustments, Phillip has yet to show up. I sent an Email on 8/1: Phillip stated he would come by and adjust the latch. He never came. After waiting for a month(too long) without contact, I sent another Email on 9/10: Phillip stated he will take care of it tomorrow. Did not come. Another Email stating he would get there Thursday, could not make it Tues. Again he did not come. Phillip sent Email to me on 9/17 apologizing, stating he will get this done this week. Did not come. **** Addendum: Phillip did contact me and did come back to properly repair the gate. He apologized and accepted responsibility for essentially 'dropping the ball' on this issue. His offer to go over and above and remake the gate was not necessary but appreciated. I will continue to trust him to provide professional workmanship on other projects. I adjusted my ratings for this work, but still state only a fair job due to the time issues involved.

This member is correct with regard to my timing and I apologize and am remiss for this situation. I will refund the full price listed in her review and offer to completely re-work that entire gate with a new post, gate and hardware. I hope I can regain her trust and hopefully learn to schedule my time better in the future.
We had a tree fall on our house in the mid-June storms, creating 9+ holes in the roof, roof brace damage, gutter damage, drywall damage, and other resulting repairs. We hired Phillip with HRR because he came highly rated on Angies List and he was the only contractor who returned my request for quotes (in all fairness, one did tell me outright that he didn't have time to come do the job). He was prompt to return all communications and start scheduling times when his crew could come out. Upon coming out for the estimate, he noticed a few things that did not get reported to our claim and worked with our insurance claims adjustor to get it included (which was greatly appreciated). He even addressed some issues that our builder had done less-than-desirable work on and he got that added to our claim where applicable, and then added the others to our bill after discussing our options with us. We were glad to have all the work performed at once. Once the repairs got started, Phillip stayed with his crew almost the entire time getting everything done, kept us informed of the progress quite often, and it only took them about 3 days (total) to get all the repairs done - over a span of two weeks due to rain. We felt like the repairs were quality work, that Phillip was very honest and that we got our money's worth in the process. We even had to deal with an "issue" during the work (completely out of Phillip's control) and we felt very confident that he handled it to our satisfaction. We would certainly use him again.

The work was originally scheduled about a week before. However, life happens. Phillip had to reschedule the work due to illness. He had been bitten by a brown recluse spider and was suffering very severe effects from it and the meds he was prescribed. Still not 100%, he scheduled the work on a hot muggy, rainy Saturday because he was concerned that I had had to wait too long for the work to be done. (I had certainly understood why the work was delayed and had no problem with that.) He and his assistant met me at the big box store to pickup the doors and proceeded to do the installations. The painting of the door was excellent, better than I could have ever imagined. The house gable was cleaned and treated so that it would not accumulate more mildew. All the work was neatly and professionally done. If the ratings on Angie's list included an A+, Phillip certainly earned one!
Description of Work: Install garage side door and paint; install steel security door; install front and rear screen doors; reinforce side door hinges and door jam; install new lock set on the side door; repair trim around the side door and paint; mildew wash east end gable of home

Phillip was very punctual and easy to work with. In dealing with an older house and the challenges often presented by the same, he offered good suggestions for completeing the tasks requested. The work was done in a very professional manner and when completed in a timely manner, the premises were left clean and clear of debris. I was very pleased with the quality of his work.

The response time for the appointment was over a week but with all the rain we had for several weeks it is understandable Phillip was pretty booked. He showed on the promised date and time and inspected both the roof and the attic. He determined that although there might be other issues in the future the fix to the immediate problem was nothing more that caulking a few holes where the nail heads rusted out. The fix was quick he would not even let me pay for the tube of caulk or his time. I would definitively recommend them to others.
Description of Work: We have had a leaky roof for some time but in the drought never paid much attention. This year we needed it fixed. Phillip showed up at time stated, inspected the roof and attic and decided the fix was simple. Tended to the problem
I called Phillip to help get my mother's house in shape to put on the market. He responded promptly and did excellent work. We were pressed for time, and Phillip understood that and went out of his way to schedule the work as soon as possible. Because I'm out of the area, I appreciated that he sent me photos of each completed task. He was also honest about not being the best choice for a couple of tasks. I'd strongly recommend Phillip to anyone looking for handyman services.
Description of Work: Clean attic after animal got in, fix leaky valve, fix broken kitchen drawer, replace outside electrical outlet, replace light bulbs in high locations, door replacement, door refinishing, lock hardware replacement.
