So, I'd heard this company's commercials on the radio, and thought it would be a good choice when my system suddenly quit cooling the night before. I submitted a service request online that night and at the same time bought their service contract for an initial monthly installment of $35.00, which I later cancelled. I received a call from the company the next day, and was given an approximate time the technicians would arrive. I was quoted 89 dollars for the initial call, which was due prior to start of work. The technicians arrived, one of which was either a journeyman or possibly craftsman and an apprentice. The more experienced began on the interior unit, and then asked to go outside to check the exterior unit, while the apprentice watched on. I kept an eye on them mainly to learn as I had four years of plumbing experience serving in the Air Force. After about 30 minutes of troubleshooting, the technician said he thought the expansion valve was the problem, and quoted me around $1,400 dollars. Having a mechanical background, that quote seemed rather high to me, and so of course became suspicious. Then the technician began talking about my manufacturer's warranty, which I still had over a year on, and recommended replacing the coil as well, which would reset the warranty to another 5 years, but when we pressed him about the need to replace the coil and whether it would be covered by the warranty, he said no, because there's nothing wrong with the coil and manufacturers check returned parts before paying the company for the replacement. This made me even more suspicious. Of course, this would increase the cost even more. Then, suddenly the initial quote went above 2K because during troubleshooting they had to drain all our freon from the system, and would have to be replaced. At this point, I started making phone calls to my homebuilder service rep and paid the 89 dollars for the initial call. The quote broke down as follows: travel charge $35, Replace High Temp Hemostatic Expansion Valve, $289.79; OEM Thermostatic Expansion Valve $71.37 (note part was under warranty); Replace/Install liquid line filter dryer, $228.22; Recover, Evac, Return Refrigerant, $362.51; Evacuate Refrig System, $297.26; Charge system w/ R410A, per pound,
[email protected] ea; Total Estimate: $2042.91. You can see why I went with another company who charged me only $250 to replace the part, recharged my system at no add'l cost, and cleaned up whatever mess the Beyer Boys left (during troubleshooting, they tore into the vent hood so tape was left everywhere, and air was freely blowing out the hole that was left) Buyer beware.
Description of Work: Performed diagnostics on system, drained all the freon during troubleshooting, and identified the problem was with an expansion valve. Provided estimate on costs to repair; left system as is as if expecting to return to finish job later.
