We bought a new home in the M-Streets area that was mostly updated, but needed a few additional fixes. I was really impressed with DFW Improved. Ed Westerman was prompt and professional, and I was more impressed with him than some of the other contractors we interviewed for this job. I needed all of the work to be done by August 1, and they pretty much met that deadline. Jason was our project manager, and he could have been a little more communicative during the process, but overall he was great. I had an issue with the initial can lights that they installed but they came right out and fixed them for me. I also love the 1-year warranty. The work they did was very high quality. Our house looks great and DFW improved did a really great job!
Description of Work: We had DFW Improved build stairs to a finished attic, cover up and remove the pull down stairs, paint our entire house, remove/change the tile in front of our fireplace, remove track lighting and install can lights in our living room, install a new standard size stove/vent hood for a non-standard size range opening (including fixing cabinets and granite to the new 36" range and vent hood).

The fence was tricky since it was not your typical fence. Our first estimate was beyond our budget, but Ian and his team didn't give up and came to our house several times to come up with a solution. Ian, Jeff and their team are honest and solid. I feel like they're a trusted source for any future work we may need.
Description of Work: We had a custom fence replaced.

Gary Simms (sales) provided the estimate for this job. He was punctual, efficient, and friendly. Since DFW Improved uses the same database as insurance companies, aligning his estimates with the insurance adjuster's estimate was a breeze. Once they were selected, Doug was assigned as the project manager. Doug was also very friendly, his guys were very respectful of my home, and the work was completed quickly and to the highest quality standards. The one hiccup that came up was handled immediately and professionally. I would recommend DFW Improved to anyone needing work done to their home whether it was an insurance claim or just improvements. I will use them in the future when I need work done to the house that I cannot complete myself.
Description of Work: DFW Improved completed and insurance repair job (water damage) at my home. This involved drywall repair/replacement in an upstairs hallway, an upstairs gameroom and the downstairs kitchen. They repaired the hardwood floor in the upstairs hallway. They replaced two light fixtures and painted all of the areas that were repaired.

It was a nightmare. They were suppose to take 4 days, so we moved out with our cats to a hotel. We were able to move back in 5 days later, but only the floors were done. We discovered that they ripped our recliner chair (the response to us was "it was an old chair anyway"), scratched our dining room table, broke our bed headboard lighting (which they did finally fix), and destroyed our Murphy bed. When the Murphy bed fell, it scratched up the new floor they just put in and broke our ceiling fan. I had asked for new bathroom fixtures & they painted around the old ones & I had to get them to come back & put the new ones (which were in front of the hall with a huge note on it to hang them athe first time they came). Also, they NAILED the new mirrored medicine cabinet to the wall, so when I called as it was hanging off the wal,l the response was "I guess they should have anchored it". They did come fix that, however, they did not recess it like I asked. I'm not sure if I can trust their anchor job & may have to fix that as well. We had a big discussion over texturizing the walls because our last project from h*** needed to have the wall repainted since texturizing was not done then either. I was assured the wall would be texturized this time. Well, they ONLY texturized in the spots where they fixed the cracks. It looks horrible. The bathroom ceiling was suppose to be painted keeping the popcorn. However, there are places where the popcorn was completely missed, yet it did splash on the walls in other areas and around the vents are globs of paint hanging there like stalactites. They also failed to glue down the transition strip from the bathroom to the office & it slides around when you walk on it. The worse part was they kept saying they were going to fix the Murphy bed. They left it in the middle of the room. This meant I had to move the furniture every day when I needed to get into the closet for my scrubs, then move it back so I could use my vanity to get ready for work (at an angle since I couldn't fit the chair all the way back with the bed in the way). At night the same process. Forget using my desk as there was no way I could fit around the bed. I also couldn't put any pressure on the bed as it might scratch the floor up more. It was like this for 12 weeks. I finally couldn't take it anymore & said to either fix it or remove it. They talked me into a few days more, then another week saying they had the part. After 14 weeks we had had it! So they were suppose to call Thursday to let us know the verdict. Did not hear from them. I contacted them Friday & we both took the day off so we could be there. They promised Saturday they'd come by 2-3pm as they said they had the part & needed to pick it up. They did not show until 5 pm and said they came to rip the bed out. Which they did. We had the room painted to match the Murphy Bed. So now we need to have both the bedroom & bath repainted - this time texturized to cover all the flaws. The floor is still marked up from when the bed fell. The ceiling needs to be redone in the bathroom. We furnished the new ceiling fan & they did put that up, but they have cost us far more than this project was worth. The Murphy bed alone will cost us (with the same shelves we had, plus mattress & installation) $5,000. We would have been better off using Empire for the floors (they said they would've done it in one day), hired the same painters who fixed the last disaster, and paid to have the Murphy bed taken down & replaced by a professional. On top of all this, we had paid them $5,000. down. I got a call several weeks after I thought this was done. Ken said they would give us a $4,000. discount - which meant we only had to pay them $1,000 on the balance. I told him AFTER we repainted the bedroom & bath with texture, AFTER we redo the glumpy ceiling, AFTER we get a new Murphy bed, AFTER we replace our recliner (which we can't find one we like so far in that fits in that area) and AFTER we figure out what to do about our dining room table, that if there was anything left they could have it. They did send us a confirmation that the work was paid in full within the hour. However, they are costing us far more than we got out of this horrible job. I do have pictures & video which I am keeping while we go thru our repairs. We went through 14 weeks of h***. No, I would NOT use DFW to even make a dog house!
Description of Work: They were suppose to put in 3 lament floors, 1 tile floor (bathroom), paint JACK & JILL bedrooms & bathroom. The big thing was we had a Murphy bed & we went with them because they said they could take it out, do the work & replace it. The charge was to be close to $10,000. It was the most expensive bid, but because of the Murphy bed we went with them.

Response from DFW Improved
In response to the client's concerns: In regards to the chair, there is some discrepancy on exactly what was said regarding the chair. Our staff recall telling the client we would either fix her chair or have the bottom recovered. We did not say “it was old anyway”. The original proposal included scraping the popcorn from the bathroom ceiling and fixing the issues with the texture. The client removed the texture and scraping the popcorn from the scope of work. In the proposal they signed, we were only to paint the guest bathroom and 2 guest bedrooms. When the painting was complete, we went over the job and she was happy with the work. Hanging the new bathroom fixtures and mirror were not part of the signed proposal. The client added this late in the project. Because of this, we did not have them installed before the painting was complete. They were installed after the painting. The headboard lighting was never broken, it was just unplugged. We did scratch the floor during the moving of the Murphy bed. I told the client we would replace the scratched pieces. However, she said to leave the floor the way it was. We colored the scratch to hide it the best we could. At this point, we did everything the client asked us to do. The only item left was to fix the bed. We made every effort to fix the bed. We called the original manufacture for the parts. They said they would ship it to us. However, after many weeks of multiple conversations and no part, they finally informed us that they don’t have the part because her bed was a discontinued model. We then took the part to a machine shop to try to have them make a new one. We informed the client that it would take a while to get the part made. After a couple of weeks the client told us she was tired of waiting and wanted the bed removed. We removed the bed. One the rare occasion accidents happen, we make every effort to fix the issue. Had the client allowed us, we would have taken care of all her issues. We did give her $4,950, which would cover a new murphy bed and chair to make things right with the client.

Paint costs aside DFW was slightly higher than the competitive for the labor and their crew did an excellent job! They painted all cielings, walls and woodwork with two full coats, fixing sheet rock and priming several rooms. The downstairs rooms have 10' ceilings and the upstairs 9'. In addition they used oil-based paint for thewoodwork which gives a beautiful lasting finish. A project manager ensured that our house remained clean during the work and that a very quality job was completed. We plan to use DFW Improved for more projects in the future.
Description of Work: DFW painted the inside of our entire house, about 3400 square feet, using Benjamin Moore paint.

Had to call DFW improved 2 times and leave 2 messages before I got a call back. Finally got a call back and we discussed the project and set a tentative date for him to come out and look at the job. He said the job was something he could definitely handle and would want to do. He said would call back and confirm the date after he checked his schedule. Never received a call back. Called DFW improved twice after I didn't hear back and left a message. Never heard back from him. Complete waste of time!!

Please note: This review DOES NOT review/represent DFW Improved's workmanship on reparis, it is only based on their salesmans responses. Although the initial quote was lower, we decided to go with another company due to the lack of response and having to follow-up multiple times on questions. In addition, I mentioned that we had received an Angie's list booklet and there was a 10% coupon in it. Even though I never mentioned we were members of Angie's list, the salesperson said he had already applied that coupon and would not give the 10% off. After asking multiple times to confirm the repair dates (important due to holidays and scheduling) and not receiving a response and also being told that the project manager would contact me to discuss but never did, we decided this was not what we wanted to deal with. We got the feeling that we were just a 'small job' and not as important. Not saying that is what happened, just how we felt. Overall, DFW Improved has a good reputation and I hope that this was just a one off situation but it is very important because first impressions are everything.

Response from DFW Improved
The client originally called in we knew they were an Angie's List customer and we always extend that discount to our Angie's List clients whether they mention a coupon or not. It took him six weeks to accept the proposal which was expired by that time but we honored the price anyway and then made two revisions to the proposal for his changes within a three day period (from 11/5 -11/8). After that he accepted and then cancelled unexpectedly a day later. We apologize his perception of his experience was not up to our standards.

My parents' home was built in 1963-64. The original windows needed to be replace. The siding (also original) had to be replaced as well. This was going to be a BIG job. We had 3 estimates and DFW Improvement was far better. Brian, of DFW Improvement, was the first to meet with us and we were impressed with how he listened and took his time with us. In four days, Brian had a written proposal. We met with all of the project managers/supervisors and we had a meeting prior to the start of the project so everyone was "on the same page". First, the 19 windows -- old out and new in -- less than two days. We love them -- quiet, energy efficient. They have made a big impact on the look of our home. The siding (Hardie Board) was a huge job. They worked as a team and in 5 days was completed. Such an improvement! We love the new gate Aaron made for the back entrance. The painters came right behind and did a great job. A few days after that was completed, the gutters were installed, completing the project. DFW Improvement's communications by phone, emails, and in person were phenomenal. Jeff and Brian could not have been nicer. The job was heavy in materials and we paid in 4 or 5 payments as the job progressed. But the final payment was not made until Jeff and I did a "walk through" and he was sure we were totally satisfied with the job. (As with any job, things get broken -- sprinkler head, faucet, etc. -- all repaired.) Clean up was better than expected. So glad we did this project. We are looking ahead to more projects with DFW Improved.

He said we would have the estimate to replace or repair siding, fascia, soffits, caulk and paint by the following Monday, maybe Tuesday. That actually gave him 5 or 6 days to work it up. Other companies have provided their ballpark estimate onsite, with an itemized plan emailed within hours. It has now been a week since he came and he have not had a phone call, an email, a messenger pigeon, or a smoke signal. Nada. Zip. Hope he's OK. He seemed like such a nice guy.
Description of Work: We are trying to determine if we need to do exterior work prior to putting a house on the market .The man scheduled to make an estimate showed up on time, in company attire and in a marked truck. He was personable and seemed knowledgeable. We enjoyed meeting him.

Ryan was a GREAT project manager. He made us feel very comfortable about the process and in fact, he felt like a friend was helping do some work on our home. Of course with every major project in your home, it creates a bit of chaos due to all of your things being placed in the middle of the room. But the guys were always gone by the time we came home. In addition, we felt very comfortable with DFW improved working in our home while both of us worked knowing that they had a lockbox on our door and only the appropriate people would be in our home. Another benefit to this company is their willingness to add additional things, not originally discussed. After painting began, we changed our mind on how we wanted a room painted and we also asked them to paint the mantle. They did so with no hesitation, questions, and made it very easy. (Of course discussing the additional charges that would be involved with the change) I would recommend and use DFW improved for future projects. Especially if Ryan is involved!

He did an excellent job. I have a double wide mobile home, and one side started to sink a little bit, and so he got under the house, and jacked it up. He then put shims under the anchors under the house. It wasn't a real big job. He was very thorough, very polite, and he did a good job. Toward the end, he had somebody come out and help him a little bit with the jack and stuff. The price was reasonable.

They did a great job finishing all of the work and cleaning up after themselves. We were very impressed with their service. We really liked the owner, Doug Spiger. Doug seemed to know his business very well and was always a presence on site. We checked around with other companies and their prices were competitive. I have recommended them to several friends.

We had a bad experience with the sales representative who did the bid. We had an expectation that there would be two coats of paint. This was not specified in the bid one way or the other and we paid extra for a high quality of paint. The quality of the work that was done was done well, however, the dispute over the number of coats was a problem. They did not resolve the issue to our satisfaction.
