Was referred to me to do less than 10 feet of fence. David started the work on a Monday, but only took down the old fence. He, then with the help of a friend worked on the fencing next door to me, and finished that job in two days. On Wednesday, I asked when he may finish my fencing, and he said that he would get to it. On Friday evening, late, he brought his two young children and put up 3 posts and about 3 feet of fence, He then said he would finish later that night, despite it getting dark. He left without telling me and did not come back until early Sunday morning. I was not aware of him being there on Sunday except for the fact I was awoken by my house alarm going off which happened (its connected to land line telephone) when he cut my telephone line, trying to put a post into the ground. I went outside and inquired him about it, and he denied cutting my phone line. I went back into the house and then decided to go back outside and ask him if he was going to finish the job that day. He got really belligerent with me, and asked me what my problem was. I told him I had a problem with him giving me empty promises, taking over a week to put in less than 10 feet of fence, and possibly cutting my telephone line. He told me he would not finish the job, and then went into his truck where he proceeded to dig through the messy pile of invoices on the truck front seat. He found my invoice, and pointed out that I had paid for the materials and could keep them and that all he owed me was $1. He pulled one dollar out and gave me my invoice. I have since heard this is a major insult in this type of industry. I asked him for a business card, which I had kept asking for for a week now, and he told me I could just copy the name and number off the back window of his truck. Then he drove off. So, I was out $400 bucks, and left with a pile of wood, not enough fence posts, opened bags of concrete, no gate lock hardware (a request of mine) and the wrong type of nails! All of this was piled up on my drive way. I had to pull the materials back into the garage in 100 degree weather, by myself, and try to find another fence builder to finish the job. I finally did, and they told me that the fence piece he did do, and the fencing he had done for the neighbor were some of the worst fencing they had ever seen - uneven, poorly built, and completely vulnerable to the extreme Texas weather! Now I am not sure what other work David Hughes does, but I can tell you it is probably just as poorly executed, and I would never ever recommend him. If I had spent more than I did on him, I probably would have tried to drag his sorry self to court by now!
