Arriving home from work, my boyfriend noticed that water was coming out of the back door. He went inside to find ~2 inches of water throughout the kitchen, living room, and dining rooms in our newly purchased house. Apprenently the water line to the new refridgerator had burst and was filling the house with water while we were at work. He called me and asked me to find help while he turned off the water to the house and began to try to move the water out of the house. I had recently moved to Houston and called the first people I found online. They promised that a representative would be at the house in 30 minutes. I arrived about 1 hour later at the house and the folks had not yet arrived. Finally three people arrived, walked through the house, explained what they would do, and promtly waited for their help to come. Finally, 2 hours later the carpet and damaged laminate flooring came out and they started to vacuum up the remaining water with a large shop vac. Then they turned to the baseboards, testing for water content in the materials. These came off, and the 2 feet off the bottom of all the walls (also tesing throughout for water content). In the process of taking out these materials, the workers managed to damage the ceiling in 3 places, break a tile in the kitchen, and try to convince us that we had to remove a built in bookshelf made out of wood that had not been in contact with the water. Additionally, at about 10:30pm when they had pulled out all of the wood paneling in the living room, they proceeded to attempt to convince us to let them take out all of the custom, mostly solid wood, kitchen cabinets and to let them replace the new granit counter tops. The water had at this point been tap water and in the house for maybe 4 hours overall (based on rate flow estimates and volume calculations that I have since done). Once the removal was complete, and they did do what needed to be done (and possiblily more than was needed), they placed ~14 fans and ~6 dehumidifyers in the house for 4 days to remove any potential for mold. It was difficult to get them on the phone, but finally they did come out and arrived at least 30 minutes late every time. The overall experience was lousy, and I hope that no one ends up using them. The final conclusion that I had drawn from this experience is that these sorts of contractors are out for the largest payout that they can get from the insurance company & generally, if your insurance covers the damage, the insurance company won't mind increasing your payments to make up for it.
