They did a good job, finished on time, and handled my request about my fireplace easily.
Description of Work: Had carpet removed from dining room, hallway, and living room. Vinyl flooring was removed from kitchen Tile entryway was removed from dining room. Engineered hardwood was installed in dining room, hallway, and living. Tile was installed in kitchen. Also had them remove old tile that surrounded my fireplace and replaced it with the same tile that was being installed in kitchen.

The wooden-floor re-finishers were prompt, quick and made the floors look much better. They were diligent before beginning their work to let me know what they could and could not improve so that I would have realistic expectations. The carpet installers also did an excellent job and were careful not to damage our recently-painted walls.
Description of Work: Hardwood floors were lightly refinished, and new carpet was installed in 4 bedrooms, on stairs and in hall area. Before pad was laid, an area in the upstairs hallway was "de-squeaked".

Very professional from start to finish. Ken and Don spent considerable time taking room measurements in our home and reviewing the various options for installation details including room transitions. Ken was very patient with our self-imposed long and tedious material selection process. His responsiveness and communication skills were appreciated. On the first day of the installation, both Ken and Don arrived to review the job specifics with Vicente's installation crew. The installers were efficient and meticulous. Dan (the owner) and Ken followed up with us after completion.

The selection process was easy with the information provided during the home visit. Having the samples in the home was a tremendous help. All questions were addressed. Installation scheduled as soon as possible. The installers were punctual, personable, and polite. Care was taken to minimize "knicks" that typically occur when carpet is installed. The carpet looks great!

Both the carpet and wood floor installations were well done and on the agreed to time frame. We were and still are very happy with the results and would hire them again for future projects.
Description of Work: Carrol John Flooring was hired to replace some carpet on a stairway, two landings and a small room and to install a hand scraped wood floor in a large game room. These were essentially two separate projects done by different crews.

We have only positive things to say about this company, not only because of the high quality of the work but also because of the helpful and friendly attitude of both the consultant/manager (Don Potash) and the work crew. My husband and I recently bought a house that was built about 9 years ago. All the carpet needed replacing; many of the ceramic floor tiles in the kitchen were loose; and we wanted to remove the carpet in one of the bedrooms and replace it with wood laminate. Being new to Dallas we struck out on our own to find a good carpet/flooring store. After seeing good reviews about "Carrol Johns Flooring", we decided to drive out to their store in Carrollton. We were met by Don Potash, who was friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. Don showed us several types of carpet samples in the store and wood laminate samples without pushing us toward the high dollar ones. He answered any and all questions we had with great patience and clarity. Don is about as far from "high-pressure" salesman as you can get, which we greatly appreciate. We run from high-pressure tactics. You will get none of that here - just honest communication about products and services. We did not know what colors we would need at that point, so Don said he would come out to the house when we were ready (after the painters finished) and bring out several of the sample boards. He made two trips to our house at different times because we needed more samples to look at before signing off. Both in person and via emails, Don was always great to work with - an honest, "salt of the earth" kind of guy. When we were ready for the work to start, Don came out to get his work team started and show them exactly what needed to be done. The team was great - they got right down to business and worked without a break, doing a beautiful job of installing, then vacuuming and cleaning up afterward. The floor tiles in the kitchen and breakfast areas was another job that we asked Don and his team to work on. It appeared to us that the tiles (when the house was built several years ago) were not installed properly by whoever the builder used at the time. The grout was crumbling around most of the tiles and many of them were loose. The work team came out last week and it turned out to be a massive job because most of the tiles needed to be pulled up, cleaned up, and regrouted. They worked all day and called in another couple of guys to assist. We were here the entire time and saw exactly what the issues were with the floor. Once again, they did a great job - all tiles are now firmly in place. The cleanup was top-notch. We did not have to clean up on our own when they left. We would use Carrol Johns Flooring again, without question. The price quotes were competitive and more than reasonable.Thank you, Don, and thanks to your work team for a great experience.

I hired Carrol Johns to remove and replace the carpet in my main living area, master bedroom, two guest rooms, four closets and a small hallway. I scheduled the install a few weeks in advance. ONE DAY PRIOR to the scheduled install date I had still not heard when the installers were coming. I emailed my contact, Michael Potash, to find out when the installers would arrive. He informed me that the carpet was not in and that they would need to push the install back to Saturday (originally scheduled for Wednesday). We were also coordinating my time off, painters and other issues - so moving the install to Saturday wasn't really an option. We settled on Friday - even though I was assured at the outset that we had scheduled in plenty of time to install that Wednesday. INSTALL The install was interesting. The installers showed up late on Friday without calling, but immediately got to work removing the old carpet. This left my house a dusty mess (which was to be expected). They remove the old pad, start installing the new pad and carpet. Everything seemed to be going well. The carpet I picked is lush - very nice and thick with a thick pad. I'm not sure these installers had much experience installing carpet so thick. It took them quite a bit of time to get it attached to the tack boards and stretched. But, after making a ton of noise, they finished up. CLEANUP Outside of a very light vacuuming, almost no cleanup occurred. They hauled off the old carpet - but fragments remained in the yard and throughout my house. It was Friday evening around 6 p.m. at this time and it was clear they wanted to go home. INSPECTION THIS IS WHERE THE REAL ISSUES START: Upon inspecting my carpet, I noticed that nearly all of my baseboards had been damaged. From scuffs to major scratches and grooves to nails sticking out that had come loose. I also had grooves in almost all the door frames from the equipment and a small crack in the drywall in one of the guest rooms. THIS WAS UNACCEPTABLE. I attempted to discuss this with the install crew, but he didn't quite understand my issues and I said I would take it up with my contact. I signed off on the install at that point because I was assured my contact would take care of the issue. I also paid the remaining balance (both bad mistakes). AFTERMATH The following Monday, I emailed Michael Potash with photos of all the damage and an explanation of what had happened on Friday. I said I wanted this fixed and I wanted a contractor of my choosing to do the work. Michael insisted to have his contractor come back and fix the damage - but I refused. Why would I let the contractor that caused the damage try to repair it? Michael said that approval would have to come from the owner of the company to do it my way. I said that was fine - but the owner happened to be "out of the country" for a few days. In the meantime, I placed a stop payment on the check I wrote a few days earlier to try and ensure this would be fixed. About two weeks later, I heard back from Michael that the owner had approved me using an outside contractor. So, I proceed to have the baseboards replaced and spent a good deal doing so. I submitted this number to Carrol Johns and was rebuffed. At this point, I was dealing directly with the president Dan Ratcliff. He told me there was no way I could have spent so much having baseboards replaced - and went so far as to say he never approved the work. At this point, I told Dan that the work was done and I had spent what I spent. Based on my calculation, we had spent more in time / effort / materials than what was still "owed" to Carrol Johns, but Dan disagreed. I told him to suggest an alternative sum and I would consider it, but I didn't hear from him again for several weeks. Then, three days ago, I get a certified letter from Carrol Johns stating that they had attempted to collect the remaining balance from me, but emails and phone calls had gone unreturned and THEY HAD NEVER HEARD FROM ME. Nevermind all the emails back and fourth about the project issues after the install. Plus, I have YET to receive a phone call from Dan despite him saying he's left multiple messages. Now, despite photo evidence to the contrary (and the fact that we had two of these rooms painted the day before carpet went in), Dan is accusing us of not having any damage and demanding the remaining payment. To this point, this is unresolved. Carrol Johns has threatened us with a mechanic's lien and possible legal action because I stopped payment. I am in the process of posting all of my email conversations with Michael and Dan, plus photos of the damage to www.carroljohnsflooringdamage.com. IN CLOSING This project started just like any other - but quickly devolved when issues arose. To this point, Dan has yet to offer us a discount for our trouble and has rescinded his offer to pay for the damage. I simply wanted new carpet for my house. Instead, I have this ridiculous situation and treats from Dan Ratcliff. Unacceptable. UPDATE 2-21-14 So, instead of continuing to work with me on the problem, Dan Ratcliff turned me into the Tarrant County DA. To avoid further legal issues, I paid for the remainder of the project. Basically, Carrol Johns and Dan Ratcliff extracted the remaining balance from me WITHOUT ADDRESSING THE ISSUE. I'm now out the cost of the carpet AND the cost to replace the baseboards. I've not heard from Ratcliff in over a month despite emails to him. Despicable.

In 18 years of serving the public I have discovered that if I behave honestly and with integrity, my customers do the same. Exceptions to this rule are very rare. Scuffs and scrapes to baseboards, try as we might to avoid them, do happen. The member’s photos show minor scuffing, some of which appears to be dated. I OFFERED TO SEND OUR PAINT AND TRIM CREW IMMEDIATELY UPON RECEIVING THESE PHOTOS. The member refused. I made several offers to settle for less than the original amount owed, asking only for a contractor's estimate, invoices or receipts for the repairs made or related material. The member has never provided any such documentation. I offered to personally inspect the installation to assess the situation. The member refused. The member signed our satisfaction form- checking “yes” boxes in four separate places on the form- and gave our installers a check for the full amount due AFTER the installation. The member then put a stop payment on said check without notifying or warning us of his intent. We felt this constituted “Theft Of Service” under state law. I repeatedly asked the member to call me, assuring him that we could solve our differences in one 5-minute phone call. The member would not call and would not answer my calls. Finally, after more than two months and having run out of options, I turned the hot check and supporting documents over to the Tarrant County District Attorney. It’s the last thing I wanted to do. We are not perfect. Of course we make mistakes; I would never suggest otherwise. I feel we have done everything that anyone could reasonably expect from a business to try to fix this situation before it reached this point. I am proud of my company, its employees and the fantastic customer base we have worked so hard to build. UPDATE 2/26: We have received full restitution from the Tarrant County Worthless Check Division. The member emailed me to notify me of his restitution payment. Other than that I have had no further contact from the member. Dan Ratcliff President Carrol Johns, Inc. 972-679-6426

Michael P met me at house we have on market this morning even though he was technically off work for holidays. Estimate process was excellent and price was reasonable. Signed contract for 1/2 down and scheduled service for next week. This afternoon we got an offer for house and they didn't want the carpeting installed. Called Michael and he cancelled the contract without cost but said he would keep the information on hand in case contract fell through and we needed to install carpeting after all. Was very pleased with his professionalism and dedication and will certainly be contacting Carrol Johns first when it is time to replace carpet in our new home.

What was really important to us was price, quality and getting the job done in the timeline we set. We had the work done before we moved into the house. All of that was met to our satisfaction! They worked with us on the price. They were able to get the product we requested. It was installed in a timely fashion, but I could tell they wanted to do good work. They asked us when we would come by and check in if we liked it. I appreciated that. The first round of carpet was damaged and had to be sent back, so that set us back a couple of days, but since the majority of the house was hardwoods and only two bedrooms carpet, we were able to move in on time and it worked out. They even checked in on us after the install and gave us hardwood and carpet cleaner. They were personable and I felt easy to talk with and that is important to me. Thank you!

Fantastic. Don Potash is the sales rep who helped me and he was wonderful – very patient in answering my questions, and generous with his time, including coming to my home repeatedly with samples. During the job itself, he was at my home nearly every day and closely oversaw his crew; when he wasn’t at my house, he promptly answered his phone when I had questions. He’s also an all-around nice, honest person – a pleasure to work with. The crew was great, too. They have been installing floors for years, primarily with Carroll Johns. Very professional. The crew did a great job of communicating with me, even identifying a leak that was problematic in that it slowed their job down, and that they easily could have floored over without saying anything just to avoid the hassle – again, very honest folks. Very respectful of my schedule and picking up well each night so my children couldn’t hurt themselves. Dusted and replaced all of the furniture before they left, left my home neat and clean and looking great. They were also very patient, for example when I decided I needed a different grout color, which again, created extra work for them.

Called Carrol Johns after receiving quotes from other flooring contractors to have the floors in my Kitchen, Family Room, Media Room and Hallway replaced. The kitchen had linoleum, the media room had Pergo and the Family Room and Hallway had carpet. I called Carrol Johns because of the excellent reviews on Angie's List. Michael Potash came to my house and reviewed the project, showed my wife and I wood choices, discussed options and subsequently furnished a quote. The quote was slightly more than I received from the other quotes I got. The reason I chose Carrol Johns was that they had better reviews for service and the fact that the other contractors were just installers and would not take responsibility for the wood. I could just imagine if something went wrong; the battles that would take place with the installer blaming the wood and the manufacturer blaming the installer. The Carrol Johns crew came out two days after i signed the contract and started the work. The installation crew consisted of two workers that moved the heavy furniture (we had moved the light stuff and breakables ourselves) and started work. They worked hard for two straight days and completed the job. We had a brick fireplace and decorator wall in the Family room that they had to undercut to make the joint with the flooring and we had a step from the Family Room to the entry foyer that was previously covered with carpet that had to be redone in the wood flooring. Both of these jobs were done with great skill and look great. i received a call from Michael after the work was done to see if I was satisfied. I told him that I was. I have waited until now to post a review because I wanted to give the floor a chance to show problems before i recommended it. No problems have surfaced and it still looks great. I am very satisfied with the process with Carrol Johns Flooring.

He arrived right on time, was very professional and helpful. I chose the tile and grout colors. He said he would call me no later than Monday to let me know when it was scheduled. He called Monday and said they would be there Thursday. Thursday they arrived on time, very professional, work was complete in one day, and it all looks beautiful!

My representative from Carroll Johns is Zach Ibarra. I can't say enough great things about Zach and the company he represents. Zach is professional, knowledgeable, honorable, patient, and a valuable asset to this company. I highly recommend Carroll John and Zach. I plan to do more updates in my house next year, and I will be a returning customer. Actually, I consider myself an existing customer now and in the future. Here are a few details regarding my experience. At the end of June I joined Angie's list to find a hardwood/ tile company. Based on ratings, I decided on Carroll John. Zach Ibarra was assigned as my representative. We spoke on the phone and after discussing many options, he came to my home with samples based on our conversations. I decided on laminate hardwood for my office/entry and luxury vinyl tile for my kitchen/utility room. The installation was on or around July 5. For reasons unknown (maybe a bad batch of glue and something that rarely happens; it also rained immediately after the installation for several days), I had problems with the vinyl. There was glue leakage inbetween the vinyl tiles. Zach had the installer, Mario, come to my house on several occasions and clean the glue up. Mario was also very professional and an excellent representative of this company. We finally had to make a decision to pull up the vinyl and do a moisture test. The moisture test came back okay. I got credit for the vinyl tile and installation and decided to install porcelain tile the second time around. I had to pay a small difference, but the end result was wonderful. I love my laminate hardwood and my porcelain tile. This company stands behind their products and installations.

GREAT job. Not the biggest selection of the companies we went with, but the products they had were high quality and represented a variety of price points. The installation was fast and VERY smooth. They made one tiny error (accidentally floored over a hole we'd had put in for a dryer vent) and were back the very next morning to fix it- even though *we* had missed seeing the error and signed off on the job. Would definitely use again- but we probably won't have to, because I am VERY happy with the floor and don't anticipate re-doing it any time soon!

I didn't use them because I was quoted materials which I found to be inferior but they tried to pass it off as top of the line. I researched the manufacturer and name brands, which were both made in China and far inferior to what I wanted and what he said he had.. When I emailed them about it, he never responded.

Response from Flooring Direct
My company has not, does not and never will get our clients involved in products of "inferior quality." We have too much to lose by so doing. I have attempted to contact this member today without success and will continue to do so. Our rep, Mike Wallace, quoted the member LM wood flooring (for stair treads) and Shaw carpet for other areas of the home. LM wood products are manufactured to strict quality standards and offer warranties comparable to anyone in the industry. Shaw Industries, a Berkshire Hathaway Company, is the industry leader whose carpet products are 100% designed and manufactured in Dalton, Georgia, USA. I do not know how the member made her determinations as to the quality or points of origins of the products we offered. We did not install any of them and I don't find anything negative when I search the internet. We strive for 100% client satisfaction and will continue to do so for this member. I hope to speak with her soon. Dan Ratcliff President Carrol Johns, Inc. 972-679-6426

Both the sales and installation folks were very courteous. I thought that they were very hard working as well. I only wish I would have realized how much dust would be produced. They sealed off the room, but the built in bookshelves and drawers got dust in them. Had I known, I would have sealed those off as well. However, my floors looked beautiful.
Description of Work: The refinished the wood floor at my office.
