The team was amazing. Great guys who did a good job. They had some issues with the washer on a tricky stair landing and broke one of my banister pillars. Initially NorthStar was responsive but now that I have provided them an invoice, they have gone dark and have not paid for the replacement of the pillar. This move has now cost me money to replace the pillar and I am getting no response from Monique at Northstar. I have followed up 3x.
Description of Work: We used a deal on Angies List to move some belongings on April 2nd, 2016. It was a handful of heavy elements, washer, dryer, mattresses and some TV's. That was all.

It was okay. There were issues with the move in terms of some items being lost or some items being damaged and things like that but I have already addressed that directly with NorthStar so it is taken care of. Their response to my claim was good and smooth but the move itself was not ideal. The move itself was a lot more expensive but then the Angie's List coupon did help out a lot. Just for the particular move, I would say it was a C but I have used them in the past and I have given them a better rating in the past. The price was fine. Responsiveness; it was fine. Punctuality though, that would be whatever the lowest grade you have is. They should have come at the time that they were supposed to come. And then for the movers once they were here to not take as long of a break...I don't know if that is even possible, I don't know what the work policy is but... I felt the break wouldn't be a little bit long given that the start was delayed. My previous two experiences with them have been good and so given an opportunity I would use them again. There was one move about two years prior and then another move maybe 3 or 4 years prior to that.

We headed out in the a.m. (slept on the floor with our stuff in the house) and took everything out of every car each evening as we traveled from hotel to hotel until our arrival. Upon arrival we had so much to do including unpacking the four pods that had arrived and painting and such. I placed the sealed "Debi's Car" box on the shelf in our walk in closet and didn't touch it until after the HORRIBLE crew that delivered our stuff had gone. The delivery was horrid. They scratched floors, dumped items all over the living room and garage that belong elsewhere, the local crew that was suppose to come---didn't and the delivery crew said if we wanted more people to help we needed to come up with more money. My husband, son and myself carried furniture and boxes everywhere. We worked non-stop throughout the day. My husband cut himself trying to carry mattresses and I hurt my back carting heavy items that should have been carried by the moving crew. They lost our leather couch and had a third party crew deliver it DAMAGED the following week. We found the straw hats jammed into the LOCKED armoire that was also in the master bedroom (and somehow unlocked by the crew) and a box packed by the movers. It is important to note: No one had contact with "Debi's box" from the time I found it sealed in the office to that awful moment I opened it to find that my jewelry box was missing. I contacted the LAPD and NorthStar immediately and spoke to Monique from NorthStar. She claimed she was doing an internal investigation and was only half done and would get back to us the same day. We heard nothing from her and her "private number" was just the main number. I YELPED for help and Lauren Fitzgerald responded and said that we had been told "last week" that they would contact us within 24-48 hours. CRICKETS. Then a person claiming to be Wendy De Paola emailed me and said she was taking over from Monique and would have a report to us by the end of the upcoming week. When she didn't call, we called her. We have never spoken to her--she just emailed she received my husband's message and needed another week and would cooperate with the police. Then she emailed me and said she had been contacted by the police and would be dealing with them. So--to be crystal clear. No one has spoken to US, the VICTIMS from NorthStar, about what we know except asking me to describe my jewelry box in emails and claiming these items were "missing" and that the crew was "devastated" by my loss and that THEY were suffering terribly. This company not only stole our jewelry and heirlooms, they took my memories.. And now they keep informing the world how HURT they are, how SAD they are, and how GREAT their reviews are but that "They take theft seriously." So seriously, they have never spoken to the victims in almost 4 weeks over our losses.
Description of Work: I hired them to move our home (4 bedrooms) from California to Colorado. An estimator (Ron Cohen) came out and gave me an estimate that was almost two times the others I had received. I had used NorthStar on several prior local moves. They had always worked very hard. I told Ron that this was too much and he lowered the bid to $7900 plus 3% for using our credit card. On the day of the move, 4 workers (David F, Anthony Z, Rueben and James) came to move us on May 26, 2016. My son, myself and my husband were the only ones there. We had already sent four U-Pack pods ahead and now were packing all large furniture, garage and outdoor items. They were to take the contents of our home to Colorado and unpack and set up the furniture in the rooms designated. They worked very **** ** packing on the move out date. They divided up and the four of them worked very hard in every room to get things packed. I started to pack my valuables and personal items (as was my husband) in boxes marked "Debi's Car" and "Car Stuff." They were told that we were doing this. I trusted them and was enjoying their hard work and friendliness. I began packing my box (Debi's Car) in the master bedroom. I had placed my medications, old coins and the like along with my jewelry box with every single family heirloom and piece of jewelry of any significant value (including my wedding ring, diamond cocktail rings, my deceased parents' rings, my great grandfather's gold pocket watch, an antique spoon with a gold Moses, gold charms from around the world on a bracelet, gold coins in bezels on a bracelet, gold watches, my husband's great grandmother's watch, and every gift of jewelry my father or mother gave each other or myself. I was the caretaker for my children, holding these pieces for them from their grandparents.) I kept them hidden away on top of an antique armoire (which is very tall and has a hidden compartment area that cannot be seen unless one is on a ladder. I also placed two straw hats on top which gave the illusion that the area was flat and that nothing was able to be stored up there. I was called away many times after I began putting items in this box. I had gotten the pills and the coins in the box and gently laid the lid on it when I got called away. I never once questioned that these items would be taken. David F, the foreman of the job, found me and asked whether I knew that the antique armoire was broken. I responded that I did know it was broken as I had done it when I put my jewelry box on top. He said he just wanted me to know. It turns out that the break he was talking about was not the break I was talking about. I was then called out back and my husband returned from running an errand and we watched as the armoire was taken around the back of the house (through our sliding glass doors in the master) by one of the movers. I made my was back inside and passed other movers taking my headboard and mattress down the hall. As I entered the master bedroom, the room was empty. No "Debi's Car" box or "car stuff" box or anything, including the straw hats. I went back down the hall and looked in the home office and the boxes were in there (this is where we were keeping all our car stuff including our suitcases and travel bags) and there were the two boxes taped up and on the shelf ready to be packed in the car. I made the HORRIBLE assumption my husband had packed them up and he later informed me that he had thought I had finished them up when he was gone. The rest of the day was hectic with one truck filling up and them ordering another to finish the job. I was told they would take it back to the warehouse to combine the trucks and then after we finished (I had to repeatedly show David F that items he was refusing to move were on the list prepared by Ron Cohen--but we worked that out), they wanted to take a photo of me and the crew so I could "YELP" them. I gladly did so. In fact, I gladly YELPED how wonderful they were. I had provided lunch and drinks for this crew and gave them all we had in our credit union savings account as a tip.

Jeremy, and his Crew of Carlos, Lloyd, and Christian took most of the angst out of moving the contents of my Condo to my new apartment. Luis, Antonio and Dominic were amazing! They were extremely professional, on-time, hard-workers, and efficient and had the best attitude given that the move involved about 75 steps at an incline due to the location of the house. They took extra care with all of our belongings --not one item suffered a scratch! They dis-assembled and re-assembled everything efficiently and placed it exactly were it needed to be. They made our move easy and almost seamless, which is hard to do! We would definitely use Northstar again and would request Luis, Antonio and Dominic by name!

The actual moving day was fine. The 3 movers and truck showed up at a reasonable time, and the guys busted their butts to get our stuff into the truck, being sure to take care with our more fragile items. Where it breaks down was in the assessment phase. The guy who came out to assess the house severely underestimated the amount of stuff we had. I showed him the house and the garage, but he didn't take into account that my husband had lived there for 34 years and underestimated the amount of time, the cost, the size of truck, and the number of movers we would need. The original estimate was around 1500$. but the final total was nearly 2000$. I have to give the head mover props, though, because he must have realized not too long after he got there that they were going to be undermanned, but he kept going. The estimator originally quoted for 9 1/2 hours, but to finish the job took closer to 11 1/2 (part of which was it took 45 minutes longer to drive from the old place to the new place than officially estimated). Considering we had already used a small truck to move some things, the fact that they had to leave behind enough stuff to fill another 26' truck that we had to rent a week later to finish the job ourselves was frustrating. Still, they could have dumped everything in our driveway and left, but they worked over the time and the one guy through his lunch to get everything into the house or the garage. Another complaint was the level of confusion at the office. I had called directly the week before the move to confirm they were coming and find out what tie they would arrive. I confirmed, and then received a call later on the same day to confirm my move for the following week, that I had already confirmed. It just made them seem a bit unorganized, and I just had to hope everything would go well. Plus, when I first had an estimate done, the estimator said he would email the estimate later that day. Two days later I had to call them and ask for the estimate, because I had never gotten one. If I had to rate just the moving guys alone, I would give them an A, because they were polite, helpful, and worked their butts off. The main office, not so much. The assessment was woefully inadequate, and the main office seemed unorganized and not particularly helpful. I would give the office a C or D, so I compromised with an overall B. I guess I would use them again if I could get the same movers.

Our office building was sold and without a lot of notice we had to find new office space and move within two weeks. We contacted Northstar Movers and asked for a Friday move after 4:30 PM, when our phones were being shut off. 4 Men actually arrived a little early and we were absolutely AMAZED but the level of service they provided. They were so efficient and professional.....Their attitudes and workmanship was beyond our expectations. They moved us within 4 hours and set up our new office...Damage Free.... If I was trying to find fault or make any suggestions as to how they could have done better, I could not. I would not only recommend Northstar but would suggest you save yourself time by not even bothering to look further. I've used them in the past to move my household and would not ever call anyone else if I needed moving service again.

Description of Work: They took too long to unload. Instead of filing up the elevator and move several stuff at once, they loaded one or two boxes at a time and took a lot longer than anticipated, which costed me so much. I contacted Northstar Moving to give me an estimate to move my belongings (4 bedroom home) to a new home approximately half a mile away. The estimator showed up as scheduled (on a Saturday) and was able to provide me an estimate the same day. The estimate was for an amount not to exceed. In fine print they state there are charges for packing material, boxes, shrink wrap etc. that will be used during the move and the owner would be charged accordingly. Northstar Moving was not the lowest estimate I received but seemed reasonable, professional and had good Angie's reviews. Approximately a week later, I contacted them to schedule the date of the move (November 27, 2015, the day after Thanksgiving). The four person team showed up on Friday as scheduled at 8 AM. The I went over the things that they would be moving, and things that I would take care of. The four person team moved very quickly through the home quickly shrink wrapping and disassembling bed frame, china huts etc. I had packed most of the items up and had them in boxes labeled ready to move. The first problem was the movers could not get all my things into their truck. They had to leave things back stating it wouldn't fit in the truck. I had to get another self moving truck to move those few items. I was a bit upset, but that wasn't the half of it. The moving truck showed at my new residence around 2 PM, the movers said they had to stop for lunch. They quickly unloaded the truck and took the furniture to the proper rooms and assembled the furniture. Not all of the boxes were placed into the correct room, but that could be expected. The team finished around 6 PM. The lead mover went over the charges, which were just below the not to exceed value of $1600. It took my family about 3 weeks to fully unpack everything. What was missing was some important paperwork (social security cards, birth certificates, passports etc) and all of the items in that piece of furniture. That piece of furniture arrive empty, so I figured all of the contents were packed up and in some other box that was transported over. They could not have been left at the old house, since the following day, I had the house professionally cleaned from top to bottom. And I was there to oversee the cleaning. However, before the cleaning crew came, I went through each room, each draw, each cabinet etc. to make sure nothing was left behind. The entire place was empty when the cleaning crew arrived. There are few other things missing (but those items are minor compared to the paperwork), but they are not as important as the paperwork that is missing. I contacted Northstar Moving. They send me a form for loss and damage items and told me to submit the claim. They have not so far offered any assistance. I asked them to check their trucks to see if a box or something was not unloaded and maybe to question the moving crew.

The move went flawlessly. My team, Alfonso, Miguel, Manny and Richard were pleasant, patient, and careful. They carried everything so the wood and cement stairs wouldn't get damaged from the dolly. They made it look easy - no huffing & puffing. They had to have been exhausted but they didn't complain once. I will recommend them to anyone who asks.

We had purchased a $50 coupon for $150 worth of moving services. I called NorthStar to see if they could help me move a couple pieces of furniture. I was told there would be a minimum fee of around $400. I became very frustrated and hung up. I later posted a review giving the company an F. I received a call back the next day from Wendy at NorthStar wanting to understand the problem and help to remedy the situation. At that time, I realized NorthStar is actually a large moving company and not a kind of "handy man" helper type move that I needed. Wendy offered to refund my $50 since we mistakenly bought the wrong type of service. Wendy was very professional and I will consider using NorthStar in the future for a larger move. They get an A for customer service and follow-up.
