Overall, we couldn't be happier with the service. The cost ended up being a bit more than we had originally planned because our list involved some pretty hefty items and we needed to bring in a 2nd man to help out. The work is perfect though. I am thrilled with the appearance of the work and the functionality of the work. We will definitely be calling again for our next "to do list" of jobs.
Description of Work: Tony completed a large number of tasks at our house. He re-installed an improperly installed slider door, dry walled a ceiling, reinforced the supports of our sun room, insulated the sun room floor, installed a stairway from the slider to the patio and installed lattice under the sun room.

They were on time and under budget in performing the job(s) we had for them, ranging from painting a stairwell to repairing holes in a hardwood floor. They did the work quietly and professionally during our office hours. After having a couple of other firms come in and fumble the work, the Handyman folks finished up the work started by the previous contractors and finished our short list of small tasks. I would hire them for my own home and will when I have the need.

Lou came out with a subcontractor who he left alone to finish the job. Subcontractor did ok job installing it. However, it took him close to eight hours to install 3 feet of base cap moulding and the shelf with 3 L-brackets drilled into the concrete. Lou first charged me $596 -- $515 for labor plus $81 dollars for materials to install a simple shelf and 3 feet of molding! When I objected to the price, he eventually took off two hours of travel time to pick up the materials. I still think that this is way too much money for such a seemingly simple job. ($459) When I told him I was willing to pay a fair price, he was very hard to communicate with. He was very insistent that this was a very fair price. He said he shouldn't have to have his workers drive and buy the materials for free. The subcontractor didn't have the right the right tools to drill into concrete. The drill that Lou left him kept losing charge and wouldn't drill into the concrete. I suspect Lou didn't give him the right drill bit for concrete. I never heard him using a saw to cut wood; it sounded like he was cutting it by hand. I highly recommend staying away unless you like getting ripped off.

unfortunately this member contacted us to remove 2 doors installed by another contractor who she was complaining about, this should have been a huge red flag, but we decided to try to help her anyway. we did not show up to install a shelf we showed up to remove 2 doors and reinstall 2 doors, among other complaints from the other contractor, which i thought he did a fine job. we could not do the doors due to heavy rain forecast. then she insisted we do the shelf in the basement and multiple pieces of trim although short pieces. well these pieces could not be found, we offered for her to go find the trim, then we searched for the trim which no-one had, mind you this is base cap on an old home, finally we got something close at l sweet lumber. yes we charge for our man searching for trim for her home that she insisted on. my employee is my employee not a subcontractor. when we gave her the price she offered us 200.00 for material and labor, even though we didnt charge her for the travel time, this was still not good enough for her. we are not the guys you find on craigslist without insurances and licenses, this is what we charge she knew upfront what we charge than threatened us with giving us a bad review on ANGIES LIST! we will not be stong-armed with bad review threats from members. we bend over backwards for all customers. please read our other reviews. thats our reputation. please remember you cant make everyone happy all the time. so she has now contacted angies list and put in a complaint for a resolution, these are her comments Desired Resolution: A refund of $250. This amounts to 3 hours @ $68/hour. 3 hours is more than enough time to install a simple shelf with L-brackets and 3 feet of moulding and get materials -- of a standard shelf and a piece of moulding. I live 5 minutes from Home Depot, Lowes and 3 minutes from Sweet Lumber. my thought: I'm assuming we should pay for her material also???

Lou arrived early, having given an estimate of time for the job; Handyman Matters has a 4-hour minimum charge, $275. I also need washer and dryer repair but Lou explained on the phone, and when he arrived, that Handyman Matters doesn't do appliance repair. He gave me a recommendation, which I called, and have since had the washer and dryer satisfactorily repaired. I had one extra job I had forgotten to mention on the phone. Lou did all jobs in a little more than 4 hours. Everything was great. The faucet job was more complex than anticipated and involved removing the entire sink from the vanity. Lou also cleaned the p-traps for the bathroom sink, and the dishwasher. I noticed after Lou left that the bathroom sink didn't drain well; next day Lou came back and fixed it. He's actually the sort of guy who will fix anything within reach before you know what's happening! Lou also examined the gable of the house which needs cedar shingle replacement; I am expecting an estimate for that work. I would be very happy to call on Handyman Matters again. Thank you Lou!

ALONG WITH MY COMMENTS BELOW, I WOULD DEFINITELY RECOMMEND LOU AT HANDYMAN MATTERS TO ANYONE. PROFESSIONALISM Lou at Handyman Matters was very responsive and professional from the beginning through phone, email or text. When I first inquired about his services, he immediately called me back and set up time to meet with me about the project. He was pleasant, flexible and accommodating with his schedule to fit mine by meeting very early in the day or later in the day after work. I found that to be very convenient. He was also punctual and texted me when he was on his to meet me. PROJECT AND PRICING I talked to Lou about a variety of projects in my home from a patio and cement replacement to a built-in shelving unit. He quickly came back with estimates in a couple days. I appreciated his responsiveness. Due to my budget, I decided to only do the built-in shelves. I asked him to improve his price and he did. I thought his estimate was reasonable. When I was talking about my ideas, he was very responsive and open. He offerred ideas and solutions as well. I found him NOT to be an "order taker" but a good partner in solving some of the challenges of constructing the unit to my expectations. I am a designer so I took a few days to design the unit. Once I gave him my drawings, he was quick to give me his construction plan. He managed my expectations by showing possible issues up front by telling me where some of my designs may have to change due to how he needed to build it. We agreed on a final plan. I asked about an advance payment but he said he will bill me once the project was done. I was happy that he was not trying to get money from me from the beginning. During the construction phase in his studio, he sent me photos to update me. This was very helpful. RESULTS Overall, I love the shelves and they look great. They are built well. The only reason I gave him a B on quality is because some of the details of the unit were not as great as I wanted. Most of it was in the sharpness of corners, seams, hinges and fine details that are associated with furniture type of construction. In order to get it closer to how I wanted, I spent a couple hourssanding, painting and improving some of the fine details myself. As a designer, I am more picky than usual. So, this may not be as important to others. QUICK NOTE If you are concerned about fine details, make sure to be clear on your direction and make sure that you are both on the same page. Make sure to understand exactly how something will be constructed and don't leave anything up for interpretation.
Description of Work: I asked Lou at Handyman Matters to create a white built-in shelving unit that was about 9 feet high and 13 feet wide over a doorway. The shelving material was MDF and in addition had 2 maple doors. One door was for a closet and another door was a convertable closet door and desk surface with a hinge and metal arms for support. It included some light electrical to place a socket in the unit.

My shower was leaking, so I logged onto angie's list trying to find a handyman to solve the problem. I usually pick the more costly ones because I want good service. They sold a coupon on Angie's list stating that 8 hours of handyman work was $525, and I bought the coupon assuming 8 hour of professional work could fix any leaking shower right. They sent the handyman in, and he fixed the problem, which was good. But when they finished, they tried to make my husband to pay them $1012.50 on spot. Luckily, My husband, unsure of what was happening, did not "pay by credit card or check" as asked. I ended up paying $950 for this job in total, after a few phone disputes with Tracy their office manager. She spoke fast and aggressively. She only slowed down after I told her that I would report them to Angie's list. I suspect she has been doing the "same job" to different customers for sometime already. The handyman (Tony) was very good, but he forget to paint the wall back to white. I did not want them to send anyone back to finish the job, because they charge $75/hour and 35% overhead on materials. They would name the price of the Material used and add 35% overhead on top of that with no receipt, despite my multiple requests. I AM VERY UPSET!!!! :(

Very well. The carpenter, John, is an artist. He built cabinet doors to match existing cabinets. He put a lot of thought into what he was going to have to do to build a custom cabinet area for washer dryer. They handled my kitcen renov from soup to nuts. Any associate who worked on my project, cleaned up after work so well, you would not know that they were there. They are pleasant and professional. I can rely on them. Most importatnly, I trust them. This is the hardest working company I have ever dealt with. I am getting ready to have them do another project for me.

The job itself was performed competently, but the communication between the office on the color of the shingles did not. I specified the gray color that matches the main house. When I arrived back home from work, my gosh, the colors were totally wrong! They chose light gray, closer to white, than darker colors. The colors did not match at all. When I brought this to the owners attention, I got not response and they said they will not do anything to correct it. Will never use their service again. I now have to look at the roofs with different colors - painful reminder how things got missed.

The service was outstanding. They had a secretary come out before and after and take some pictures. She even came out to make sure everything was going ok when she was sick. It turns out she was previously married to a contractor, and you could tell she knew what she was talking about. She made a bunch of very good suggestions. The worker was great as well. He did an excellent job and in my mind was a 5 star worker. The craftsmenship was excellent. They were very courteous, and professional, and they cleaned up very well after themselves. I really appreciated the promptness as well. They always called before they came, and if they were ever going to be behind, they made sure to let me know.

This is a handyman service where you pay an hourly rate plus any materials that will be needed so total cost of the job is unknown until the end. Do get an estimate of the time it will take to complete the project and estimate of materials that will be needed - this is how you gauge the total cost To keep within budget stick to the project - addl work means addl time and money If a quick run to Home Depot or Lowes is required and you feel comfortable with the "shopping list" lt the workman continue to work on project and you be the one to run the errand. The exception is when buying items with very specific specifications - then you should both go. The carpenters from Handyman Matters worked very hard, I did get a solid days' work from both people. Other handyman services may not be as reliable. Because it is by the hour the total cost in the end will be less than the estimates from contractors who have to factor in the unknown and unexpected. But you will not know the total until the job is complete.
Description of Work: I am having three exterior doors replaced. The front entryway had a mix of dry rot and carpenter ant damage and had to be rebuilt. I have had two separate carpenters on two separate dates come - the first to take measurements and help me select the right doors, etc. Yesterday a 2nd carpenter rebuilt the front entry and installed the front door. Both workmen arrived on time, worked hard and were professional. I really appreciated it when the one accompanied me to the store to buy the right materials.
Individual came in to assess area(s). After six days, we called for the estimate, it "wasn't ready" and they needed "a few more days". Called again after eleven days. Person on phone said she "sent it out" already (she didn't), and then emailed the estimate about four hours later, (which was dated five days prior), with a bogus estimate (for over $30,000), including the wrong materials for two of the jobs. I received a voicemail the next day, where the individual asked if we had any questions, or (with a chuckle) concerns about the estimate, and asked if we just wanted to have the fireplace door done instead. We have already hired others to perform these services. If they are not interested in doing your job, they will "cleverly" attempt to get themselves out of it. I will never, EVER call this place again. Waste of two weeks of our time. We could have had the jobs started already. Skip them. Totally unprofessional.

I've never had any problems with them. The same guy did both jobs. He was a cracker jack. They do excellent work and they do it rite. He says he's going to be there at 8o'clock, he's there. He was very professional.
Description of Work: Handyman Matters of Rhode Island replaced the latter up to my attic and also my screen door that was torn up by the hurricane.
We spoke with several contractors about converting this dead space into useful space. The room before was closed off to the house, had an uneven floor (several inches variance in some places), an odor, and saggin ceiling. Everyone we spoke to I asked for an ala-cart quote that would, in their opinion, make this a house room quality space. I noted out my main issues above to all the contractors. Handyman Matters came in more then double the next guy but they were going to address everything exactly as I expected and not do patch jobs or half baked work. Example is that the other contractors were going to use level cement to fix the floor - after looking under the carpet, this had already been done several times before in failed attempts. Victor from Lou's team is incredible. This man does some awesome work. The floor was leveled by creating custom framing and insulated foam board. Heavy duty plywood placed on top of that and then the wood flooring. The front slider was replaced with the window in the room that went to our dining room, and a new door placed next to it. The door to the garage was replaced with a new door. New ceiling put up. The door to the kitchen was removed and the frame opened up. A cut out was placed into the kitchen and the whole from the window to the dining room was closed off. Our kitchen and dining rooms were painted. Siding on the front of the house had to be installed since we went from a full sized slider to a door and window. Victor was also asked to address a short step in the front. No guidance was provided, just simply to bring it to code. He located cobblestone that matched the path around the front of the house and a piece of blue stone also used in the front of the house to encompass new steps in the front of the house. Handyman was very thorough, very detailed, and simply great craftsmen. These guys are worth every penny. The job only tooks a couple weeks to get off the ground. While waiting, I took care of all demo and removal myself so on the first day, Lou and Victor had an open area to begin working with. Time was not a critical piece for me, budget and quality was. Lou and I had a gentlemen's agreement that we would stay within the budget but I would add a couple pieces to offset the original quote where I had taken care of some of the work. I also had a discount coupon from the valu-paks that had been discussed a couple times including the first appointment we had for quote. When the final bill came in, it was a couple thousand off what we expected and the coupon not honored fully. This was something that both of us could have prevented by documenting the changes up front so we were on the same page. This didn't not leave a bitter taste or have me upset but a lesson learned for future work - simply to prevent surprises. Lou is great guy, was very prompt to all our needs, and brought guys of a+ caliber.
Description of Work: Remodel a breezeway area to turn it into a functional room that was opened up to the house.
