On May 10th, we were bullied by owner Josh A. into a contract to have our kitchen, some windows, and a sliding glass door completed for us by Premier Kitchen and Bath / American Window Industries, Inc. We had asked him to come meet us for an estimate and, somehow, he left with a signed contract even though he wouldn't give me the kitchen cabinet color scheme I wanted, never showed us anything in reference to the type/brand windows we were buying, and had only provided us a large total cost - no breakdown whatsoever. Our fault, I understand that. However, Josh definitely knew he was taking advantage of two people who were feeling in over their heads with a renovation turned gut job - and he ran with it.
First off, we never heard anything for an entire month or so after signing the contract. We had never been presented with any kitchen designs and not a word was mentioned about the windows. After months of no progress on our kitchen, we asked to at least get the windows ordered. He broke out another large lump sum and, yet again, we signed the "addendum" to our original contract without knowing what in the world we were even paying for.
After weeks of waiting, the windows were finally getting installed on August 4th. As we were still living out of state, my father (not a handyman) let the workers in and stayed the entire time reading a newspaper on the deck. However, the installers left their boxes/debris all over the house. They installed a sliding glass door without a screen and with a scratched handle, one of our crank windows did not even have a handle, the other crank window handle was scratched, one window had zero insulation installed (I could see daylight) and was not framed in fully or symmetrically. Not to mention, the same brand new unframed window had a caulking stain inside the window sill from where the installer apparently had placed his cup full of caulking and dripped it all over the interior of the window. Once we arrived at the house a few days after installation, we immediately notified Josh of all of these items. On August 13th we sent pictures text messages of each and every item we were unsatisfied with. Josh responded saying he would take care of it - even personally come out and clean the caulking stain from the window sill.
However, Josh then proceeded to illegally charge our credit card for the remaining balance (minus $300) of the window addendum WITHOUT AUTHORIZATION from my husband or myself! He had the card number because we used it for our previous down payment. Needless to say, we were furious and we made him well aware of our unhappiness. That?s when we got the runaround for TWELVE weeks. We had a service person come to the house in September with only two items on his work order. The rest of the issues just sat waiting to get resolved. I would call or text Josh every week stating we still hadn?t gotten the issues completed with our install. Still, we waited.
I eventually filed a Better Business Bureau complaint. My last resort to try to get the incomplete job finished. That?s when true company ethics came out. American Window Industries (and Premier Kitchen and Bath) lied again and again to the BBB to make themselves look good.
As I mentioned, I sent a picture message of the CAULKING stain located on the interior sill of the newly installed window. Josh responded to the BBB stating we told him there was a COFFEE stain on the inner sill of the window. Completely laughable.
Josh also told the BBB that he told us we could ?hold? $300 from the remaining balance due. However, $300 just happened to be the amount of the balance that he left remaining after illegally charging our credit card without the authorization of either my husband or myself. We actually called our bank and had the card number cancelled/changed because of the ordeal. VERY disconcerning knowing that a company is willing to just illegally charge a credit card for thousands of dollars without the authorization of the cardholder.
Again, Josh told another lie to BBB that, when the service call was made to our home in September, some missing material kept the service from being completed. However, the person making the service call showed me his work order as I told him about all the items that he had not addressed. He pointed to the work order and said he only had two items listed. Josh never told the manufacturer?s service person to do any of the other work. And, in written text conversation with Josh in October, when asking why it was over two and a half months past installation and my window was still not completed (we could still see daylight!), Josh responded that he only ever told the manufacturer?s service person to come out and complete the issues at our home. However, he also stated that the manufacturer only handles issues such as ?broken handles, screen not shipped with the windows, etc.? Therefore, the manufacturer?s service person was never actually going to fix the unframed window!
After having to explain to Josh that he is the contractor we hired to get our job done and that he is ultimately held responsible, he then said that he had just texted the original window installer, Joe, to contact us. Joe, we come to find out, is the person who fixes issues other than missing pieces and parts ? the person Josh should have contacted back in August when we notified Josh of all the issues with the window installation.
I waited another week before Joe came out. Josh mentioned in his BBB response that a service technician was scheduled to have our service issues completed by October 30, 2014. Again, another lie. I texted Josh on October 28th notifying him I still had not heard from Joe. However, I did talk to Joe that same day. Joe mentioned he was busy for the next couple days and could not come to our home until October 31st, not ?by October 30th? as Josh noted in his BBB response. Luckily, Joe did come to our home on the 31st and completed the remaining unfinished items. Sadly, Joe mentioned multiple times that he was unaware of any issues with the installation or else he would have come out within a week or so after installation. Joe mentioned he is the person who takes care of such issues, not the manufacturer. So, why Josh never just asked Joe, his own employee, to come back and just fix our issues? Beyond me. Although, if you ask Josh, it?s always someone else?s fault. Via text on October 23rd, he blamed my husband by saying he told Josh not to have Joe came back to our house. Yet another sad lie... ridiculous.
Don't waste your money!
When workers arrived with the door, we found that they had manufactured it incorrectly. They put the window screws on the wrong side. The worker insisted that our entry door would need to open out instead of in. We absolutely did not want that, as it was a security hazard. They told us that it would be a huge delay, so we agreed to take the door with the screws on the wrong side. The mullions were also on the outside of the door, after we were promised that they would be inside the glass. When I called the salesman to come and look, he said 'of course they're on the outside, the only things that have mullions inside are windows'. I know that is not true, as my parents purchased doors from Home Depot with the mullions inside, but the salesman literally argued with me. At this point, I had a huge gaping hole in the side of my house and had no choice but to have them install the door. They had to move the heating register and cut a hole in my floor to do so. They finished this all off with a nasty piece of wood as a threshold between the door and my kitchen floor. The window looks like a child installed it. They threw a piece of drywall under the inside of the window (to make up for the space where the door originally stood) and a piece of beadboard on the outside.
Two years later, the door mullions are bowed and look awful. The door does not close correctly, and we have to fight with the deadbolt to get it to open or close. The front door that they manufactured has paint peeling, and it does not get any weather and only morning sun.
Every time they call and ask if we're ready to do more work I give them an earful and they promise that someone will call to make it right, but NO ONE has called. I've called them and have gotten the run around. I would NEVER do business with them again and make sure that everyone knows just how bad this company is. They lie to sell you their products then never stand behind them.
"This client was misinformed about the evaluation, currently all his windows are brand new and energy star rated as I stated at the meeting. Also he had brand new windows installed in an addition currently under construction. The addition is not complete so the installers did not caulk the windows yet, this was explained to him. His attic was so small that you could only peek your head inside the attic area. It was a crawl space and I told him he could do only blown in insulation in that area. His complaints are unjustified in our opinion."
From the initial bid by Jason Zatman, to confirmations and scheduling by Beverly, to the craftsmanship and consistency by Joe and Sam, everything was professionally handled.
There had been water damage to my hardwood floor in the dining room from condensation on my previous aluminum slider. Both Joe and Sam were able to take the damaged oak flooring out and replace it with oak I had saved from the original installation of the floor. Again, the job was done to perfection.
The window quality far surpassed my expectations. The title of the window is Liberty II Fusion Welded Vinyl Windows [and doors].
It was a joy and a privilege to work with American Window Industries, Inc. Their quality, consistency and dedication to a job fairly priced and well done is more rare than on might imagine. When I need additional replacements for other windows in my house American Window Industries, Inc. are my "go to" professionals. I also want to thank my neighbor across the street for recommending them. "L" could not say enough positive comments about American, Joe and Sam. Thanks! A Great Recommendation! And I thank American Window Industries, Inc. and especially Joe and Sam for their skill, expertise and commitment for doing an exemplary job. By the way, both Joe and Sam have been with the company for over 30 yeas, love their job and make an excellent team. Thanks again!
The two workers did such a neat job that we had very little cleanup afterward!
They started upstairs around 9am and by 3pm they had removed and installed 10 windows.
When the job was completed it looked like we had a new house!
"Unfortunately the manufacturer of this door was Pella, we do not manufacturer any products so we are at the mercy of our manufacturers on product logistics. We too felt as though we were getting the run around from the distributor Houston Starr who distributes this door. We were told a certain time frame the door would be in and kept relaying the information to the homeowner as we got it. We have no reason to give this homeowner any kind of runaround since they not only purchased a house full of windows from us, but also remodeled there entire kitchen as well with us. This was one of those unfortunate situations where we were getting bad information from Houston Starr and have since stopped ordering Pella storm doors from them."
"Contrary to the homeowners belief that the work was not completed as agreed. Our company and manufacturer stand behind our product and installation. All our installations are done by our national manufacturer. Member has a short memory since we have been out to his house every time he has requested us to be there. His attic is not air conditioned, so in the summer months his attic without the insulation which was installed would be at a temperature above 150 Degrees, with the current insulation installed which is sold by Costco, the products are performing at a rate where his attic temperature is reduced to industry standards with this type of product. We stand behind our manufacturer and have never had any other complaints about this product not working."
"We were hired to enclose a porch that already had a roof existing, apparently there was a pre-exisiting condition with the roof, which we had no idea about, we were hired to install windows in a porch that has a bad roof. We determined that there is no ice and water shield on the roof, valley metal is only 12' wide, most of the leaks are coming from the main valley. Front left drip edge has negative flow, and does not go over plywood. We took pictures before and after and in order to fix the problem they will need to hire a roofer. Manufacturer of windows and doors went out there and determined all windows and doors were installed correctly and are working properly"
