Details:
I called Peters Associates to investigate a lack of cooling on a residential Lennox HVAC system they installed six years ago. My best guess was the problem was due to low refrigerant probably caused by a leak. I described this to the dispatcher and was quoted a price of $109 for a technician to come and provide 1/2 hour of diagnostic services. An additional charge of $28 for every 1/4 hour of additional time was also quoted. I was told that once the technician identified the problem, they would be able follow up with a quote. I also confirmed warranty status for the system (no surprise here).
The technician arrived within the scheduled time window and quickly got to work. He confirmed the system was low on refrigerant within 15 minutes and then proceeded to tell me it would be an additional $301 charge to search for the leak. This fee was never mentioned when I called nor would the technician use any of the remaining time to even do a quick leak check with his leak detector. I asked him to check with his manager and have him call me, but only received a call from the dispatcher wanting to know if I wanted the work done.
I gave them the go ahead to do the expensive leak check. It took about 1 hour to find a leak in the evaporator coil (the cold part). The total charge was significantly more than the hourly rate I had been quoted due to the flat rate nature of the leak check pricing.
The technician told me the coil would be covered by warranty but not labor, as per the Lennox terms and conditions. I asked the technician to have his manager call me to review options and to see if they could check with Lennox if there were any "hidden" warranties available.
The next morning I received a call from Peters (not a manager) with a quote to replace the coil. It was a big number. I again asked if he could check with Lennox about potential "hidden" warranties and was told that Lennox never did such a thing. After repeatedly asking, he reluctantly agreed to check with Lennox. He called me back within a few minutes to tell me Lennox wouldn't do anything.
At that point I started calling other Lennox authorized installers. I found another company that came out to inspect the system at no charge to me. They confirmed the leak and quoted the labor for a warranty coil replacement for well under 1/2 of what Peters quoted. I hired them, not Peters.
"WE HAVE NOT DONE ANY WORK FOR THIS PERSON IN OVER TWO YEARS. MAYBE IT IS SOME ONE ELSE. AFTER TWO YEARS THIS IS SAID."
The installers showed up on time and where very professional. They placed a tarp down to protect my floors and went right to work. They spent the whole day at the house and installed the system even though it rained that day.
I would recommend them to anyone looking for a new system.
Sales did call me a few days later (while I was sleeping-I work weird hours), and the quote seemed a little suspiciously low so I asked for him to send the quote to my email which he agreed to but then never did. So I immediately called another Heating company. They came out and replaced the $20 part for me and charged me HALF of what Peters charged me just 2 years earlier. They also told me if I was planning on moving in the next couple years not to bother replacing it but if I was going to live there for a few years it would be worth investing the money to replace it. Will not be having my unit replaced my Peters thats for sure.
