We do our best to provide top quality work while respecting your home. Once we start the job, we will continue working until your are satisfied with the results. I will stay in touch with your throughout the project to ensure that there are no problems. As you can see by the reviews here on Angie's List, not every job goes according to plan, so we are flexible and able to adapt to new situations quickly. We only use high quality paints and tools that will give your home the best look possible. I personally manage every job and make sure that my highly experienced employees are doing exactly what is expected. Owner-operated. No subs. Cost is determined by the job.
It was a pleasure to work with Barry. His initial estimate was for a significantly different set work than we ended up doing, but he was very flexible and accommodating to our changing needs. His crew showed up promptly every morning. They were polite and friendly and cleaned up the work area when they were done. The team worked quickly and did great work. The work took 4 days, I believe, and we are very happy with the results. We will certainly hire Barry again and would recommend him to any friends
Description of Work: Laminated old, damaged drywall and paneling with 1/4" drywall - approximately 45'x8', including new floor molding and quarter round. Replaced some water damaged drywall. Skim coated a textured ceiling to match adjacent smooth ceiling room. Repaired ceiling holes left by old light fixtures and electrician's work. Painted a single floor's ceiling and painted the newly installed drywall and trim.

Barry and his team were very prompt. Barry was totally accessible by his cell phone at any time. He responded to my price inquiry immediately. The work took a few days to complete. I left the key with Barry, and he left the key when they completed the work. Barry provided an itemized invoice at my request, detailing the work that was done to repair damage from the tenants, as well as the work we had him do to beautify the rest of the apartment. We would definitely use Barry again. His responsiveness and attention to detail was more important to me than price. I don't know if someone could have done the work more inexpensively...he was prompt and delivered, so I was happy.
Description of Work: Painted almost an entire 2BR/1BA apartment. Repaired multiple holes in walls caused by tenants. Bought and hung an interior door which had been damaged and ripped off hinge. Repaired front door frame and trim.

Working with Barry and his crew was a pleasure, and I would definitely hire him again. Price-wise, his estimate was similar to other contractors, but we ultimately chose to work with Barry because of his attention and responsiveness to our many questions and concerns. Barry is very accessible by email (and phone), which is a huge plus. Even though Barry's schedule was very busy and he couldn't schedule our repairs for about a month, he worked within our time frame and made sure to have the work completed before my operation. The work was completed quickly and looks excellent--our apartments look brand-new! His crew carefully cleaned the work space at the end of each day, making the whole experience more comfortable and easy.
Description of Work: Barry and his crew replaced drywall that had been damaged by water, treated other affected areas of drywall (that didn't need to be completely removed and replaced), and extensively re-painted.

Most contractors can do the work the we do. It is the extra things that you don't expect from a contractor that make us different. I do my best to stay in contact with you via email or phone throughout our relationship. I also make sure that we clean up. Not every job can be cleaned up as well as this one, but we do our best to contain, maintain, and clean our mess. Thank you for noticing our efforts and for the wonderful review!

Barry was very responsive via email and honest about his ability to schedule the project. When we scheduled the date, he and his fellow worker, Sadiq, were on time and professional. The job required him to come back a second day, and again, they were on time and completed the work quickly. I am very pleased with the quality and the outcome of the work. I had several other contractors come and either given me quotes double or triple of what Barry quoted, or just say out right that the work to meet the brick wall to the gypsum board couldn't be done. Sadiq was able to finish in the way I had envisioned it looking. Good work, good prices. Would use again for certain!

Barry and his painters are fantastic. We wanted fresh paint just prior to listing our house for sale, and he completely understood that we wanted to do the work needed to make the house show well, but not absolutely everything (i.e., our kitchen walls needed paint, but not the ceiling, and he advised us against painting any trim because it would be so time consuming and expensive). We are extremely happy with the results. Barry and his crew were all pleasant to work with, kept the disruption to our home to a minimum (which we appreciated since we have two small children), and did an outstanding job in terms of technical proficiency. We highly recommend him and plan to use him again in the future.

Thank you for this wonderful review. We tried very hard to get this done right. The scheduling worked out well, since we had to paint their steps on a Friday when they were going out of town for the weekend. You can't have a family of 4 stuck on the 1st floor. We enjoyed this project, and I hope we helped to make your house sell quickly.
Barry and his crew are quite possibly the most professional and at the same most reasonable contractor(s) that we have ever encountered. They were courteous and professional from the initial contact until the minute the job was completed. We found Barry here at Angie's List and he was among the only two (A-rated drywall/painting contractors) that actually answered our initial call. The others simply ignored our message(s), and/or repeated calls to schedule an estimate. Barry, on the other hand, was in constant touch after our initial conversation, and while he was also very busy at the time, he promised that he would make every effort to schedule us in as soon as possible. In the end, that indeed was the case, and the work was completed at least a week before it was initially scheduled! Barry and his crew were very punctual, professional and did an overall great job. Best of all, their rates are extremely reasonable. I would wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone.
Description of Work: Barry's crew did the repair work needed after our basement was flooded: - installed new 5/8" drywall where it was removed in the main basement, bathroom, storage area and ceiling - applied 3 coats of joint compound to all seams - sanded and finished all joints - removed partially removed baseboards to the corners and installed new baseboards in those areas - replaced door trim - painted the ceiling, walls, and all trim in the basement and the stairwell to the 1st floor

Barry and his team were a pleasure to work with! Quality of work was great. We met twice prior to starting the work, once so that he could give me a quote and then a second time to finalize the colors for each room. He began on the day that he said he would and the work took the amount of time that he had indicated. Additionally, Barry was extremely responsive and always emailed me back right away. On days when I was not at the house, he would send me an update towards the end of the day to let me know the progress. The painting looks great and the team paid close attention to detail!

Working with Barry was great! I really appreciated that he explained everything his crew was going to do, how long it would take, and who'd be working in our house each day. Dan, Sadakiel and Jen left our house cleaner than they found it ;) and they were all very good sports about the spiral stairs, small spaces and uneven surfaces in our old rowhouse. The estimate was right on the nose in terms of cost and timing. The whole crew was a pleasure to work with, and we are completely thrilled with the results.

Barry was great - he was super responsive and professional. He helped us figure out the best kind of paint to use and what to do because we have old lead paint on our trim. He was efficient, cleaned up after his crew every day and the place looks great. The whole thing took only 3.5 days. We even had a little issue with some paint on a door trim peeling and he came right out and fixed it. I got estimates from other companies and his was the lowest. Overall, I highly recommend Barry Bush and if we need more painting done, i will definitely use him.

Barry and his team found and repaired flaws we didn't even see - they were so exacting and expert with the prep work - it was not only impressive but also so heartening to work with a contractor that truly cared about providing quality service and about his customers. We had many questions prior to the work and Barry responded to all of our emails promptly - he offered expert guidance. Weeks after the work was completed, we are still having those moments when we celebrate how great everything looks. The cost/estimate was very fair - we have already referred Barry Bush to others.
Description of Work: Barry Bush and his team painted two bedrooms, a bathroom and the upstairs hallway. This work required extensive preparation and repairs to the walls in this 150 year-old row home - expert plaster, wood and dry wall repair. We had a large hole/gap next to a window replacement that was left by a previous contractor who could not figure out how to repair (or did not care to fix) They also replaced and repaired closet doors and installed molding.

It went very well for the most part. It did go one day longer and require more paint than initially expected, but that was of no major impact to me. However, had I needed the project to be completed exactly the day planned, I assume Mr. Bush and his team would have made the necessary arrangements to meet this requirement. I was in no great rush so extending the process an extra day was not a major issue for me.

I believe that we did a great job on this wonderful property. I don't know why he gave me a B for punctuality. I showed up at the initial estimate appointment on time and started the job on schedule. It took longer and more paint than planned, because the color he chose required a 3rd coat to make it right. We always do our best to make sure that the job is done correctly, not that it is done within the estimated time frame.

Barry was a joy to work with. He was responsive over email, phone, and text messaging and I felt totally comfortable with him and his team tackling a very messy project, namely a popcorn ceiling removal. Barry did a great job for a great price. I would high recommend Barry as he pays attention to detail (covering furniture, painting the baseboards with care) while being super accessible and polite. In a case where something needed to be attended to after initial work was completed, Barry went out of his way to fix it ASAP. I highly recommend Barry Bush for painting and handyman needs. Very pleased with Barry Bush's responsiveness and work performed. Have hired Barry previously for other painting in the house [repairing and painting kitchen ceiling and walls following a plumbing leak] and was pleased then too. Barry responds to phone calls and emails promptly and is accommodating in scheduling estimates and work. For this job he worked with a team of two other painters, alternating between rooms as paint dried. Team was friendly and professional. Homeowners had to delay scheduling painting due to waiting for carpenter to install crown molding first. Barry was very accommodating in scheduling painting job soon after crown molding was installed, knowing that homeowners wanted rooms painted sooner rather than later due to the upcoming birth of a baby. Barry had advised to have crown molding installed prior to painting room, and team did very good job painting neatly around molding and not getting paint on molding. Team arrived when scheduled and Barry communicated with homeowner regularly regarding any changes in scheduling (ex., paint needed extra time to dry, so team left early one day and came back next day to complete job). Furniture covered with drop-cloths during painting and rooms left neat and 'broom-swept.' After job was completed, homeowners noticed that markings previous owners had made on the molding around the nursery door were still visible through the paint. Contacted Barry, who offered to come back the same week and put another coat of paint over that portion of the door molding - problem solved. Homeowners would definitely hire Barry again.
Description of Work: Painted a nursery [walls, trim, ceiling] after patching holes in walls and ceiling cracks, including areas of the ceiling that are curved/uneven. Nursery required primer and 3 coats of paint due to paint color chosen. Painted a living room [walls, ceiling]. Ceiling had recessed lighting in it and walls had newly-installed stained wood crown molding.

This is a hard review to write. So hard that I have put it off for almost a year. I really like Barry as a person: great e-mailer, solid writer, blogger, committed dad, and serious Angie's List contractor (his responses speak for themselves). What makes this review hard to write is that my experience does not seem to reflect the overwhelming majority of people who have hired Barry in the past (or the expectations I had of him). Here's one theory of why that may be: my job may have been too big. Most of these reviews you see are of jobs $5K or less and took a few days. Mine took about 2 weeks. I could write forever on the experience (we probably had over 100 email/text exchanges), but let me boil things down. As a committed Angie's List customer, I felt obliged to share my experience since it could help others evaluate the size of their job and what to anticipate. Barry is one of the best communicators out there. He tries really hard to be on top of things, to the point that I think it stresses him out. But it's his livelihood, so I respect that he's got to do what works and pays the bills. I don't think anyone could ever really say that he doesn't care or try. That said, he can be a bit hard to read in person; he's got a unique sense of humor. He'd say things like, "I'd rather not paint that, if I don't have to" or "I only want to do what's needed." Not sure if it's a joke or he's serious. It could be interpreted as, "I'll do it if it makes you happy." But it could also mean that excellence is not the goal but mediocrity is fine if it's acceptable to the customer. Case in point: Of all the things done to my home, the one thing I cannot stand is this soffit they built in my bedroom. Even Barry came over weeks later, looked at it and apologized. Truthfully, I did not demand it be reworked because by that point I just wanted to be done with renovating and move into my house. But how could someone leave a job that they find "ugly" and have a sense of pride? I guess sometimes you just have to move on, and if the customer doesn't really complain you chalk it up as one less thing you have to do. The crew consists of artsy folks, which is a trait I really like. They're all nice. I accidentally broke someone's drill and Barry and I worked it out without causing any noticeable conflict or tension (I bought a new one). But the one flaw as a group is that they are really messy, especially on a big job. Sure my house was under renovation, but they did not take the extra steps to make life easier. For instance, why not tape up the vents? I had to vacuum tons of dust (a few times) and will need to clean the ducts eventually. I mentioned this once and the response was negligible. Ultimately, Barry and his crew did a good job in helping to transform our home. But the quality of work was not as good as one would expect for the amount of money paid and time invested. (Caveat: I know I could have paid much more, considering competing contractors' bids were higher and Barry had a discount.) It definitely was not bad. And I honestly think it could have been a lot better had time not been an issue. Nevertheless, all I can go by was the final results. So let me break down the various jobs and their individual grades on the main items: Skimcoat: B minus -- My house is fairly old and had lots of odd texture on the walls. The crew did a fairly decent job of smoothing this out but it varies from room to room. It's not an easy thing to do, but I'm not sure they approached it with the best technique. In the end, I don't know if it was worth paying for. Paint:: B -- Overall it looks good but there are definitely some weak spots, making me question whether two coats were indeed done in every room. Drywall: B -- We had a few ceilings done. If you don't notice ceilings, that's a good thing. But there are some spots where the seams show in the living room. Barry tried to fix them, yet they are still there. Crown molding/Trim: C plus -- We were excited about this detail, but our initial positive reaction was not meant to last. We discovered that the molding was installed upside down (a common mistake, I guess) and it started to crack shortly after installation. Partly because of the type of material and maybe because of the installation technique. The trim wasn't always installed in the same fashion. I've since learned to do both of these things, so perhaps am a bit more critical because of this. Glass back splash: A minus -- Emily, who is mentioned in other reviews, is one of Barry's best workers. She did a great job with this. It's not easy to work with an older home that has unlevel surfaces, etc., and for the most part she worked well in the space provided. However, there is one tile that is obviously crooked, although, fortunately for us, in an inconspicuous area. Would I recommend Barry? Given the overwhelming positive feedback he's gotten, yes, why not. I don't think my job was typical for him. He doesn't always build ugly soffits and call it a day. But I would be cautious if you've got a big job and it doesn't seem like Barry has enough time. It could compromise the quality of work. And you should take your own extra measures to ensure cleanliness. In the end, though, you could do a lot worse and spend a lot more money going with someone else. Hope the review is fair, balanced, and helpful overall.

There is too much written here to respond to everything, but I must give a general response and respond to a few specific things. The main thing I can say is that I constantly offered to fix the things that this member did not like. He did not allow me to do anything a second time, except the skim coating of the walls. It's true that this was not a typical job for us. No one has ever asked me to skim coat an entire house before. All of the walls had a thick texture and we covered it twice. It was quite a bit of work and we did everything he asked us to do. Mainly, I think the member and I had a disconnect. I don't think he was accustomed to my personality and my sincere honesty. He always thought I was stressed or not accustomed to this work. All I have is my reputation for the quality of my work, so I take this work seriously and do everything I can to make sure that you are satisfied with the results. By the long winded review he gave here, you can tell that he was a bit particular with the details (he complained about 1 tile that was extremely difficult to install on his irregular kitchen wall). Overall, I still can't tell if he was happy with the work. I just hope you, Angie's List member reading this review, can tell the difference between this review and the reviews from other large jobs with extremely happy members.

I read great reviews about Barry Bush on Angie's List and know that some neighbors have used him in the past. I contacted him the first week in July to have him do some carpentry and drywall projects. He told me that he was busy, but could come take a look at the house in the last week of July and perform the work on the first week of August. I had to leave multiple messages when the last week of July came around, and when he finally called me back he told me that he was too busy to take my job because he had been on vacation and was now backed up with other clients. It is pretty lousy to have delayed projects and waited on someone a month only to have them back out at the last minute. If you want to work with someone who will respect your time and honor their commitments I would suggest contacting someone else.

I am truly sorry about this. I am very busy. I work with a lot of people and do my best to get everything done with quality that everyone expects. I never rush a job. Sometimes, I get overbooked, there are delays, additions are made to jobs, I have problems with staffing, and the unexpected problems occur. This is when the unfortunate mistakes are made in my scheduling as I try to manage the work flow. I did not make any promises or commitments to this person, and she did not tell me of any impending deadlines until our final conversation. I was honest, sincerely apologetic, and very respectful when I mentioned that she would benefit from another contractor who is not so busy. If I tell you that I am overbooked during our initial conversation, it might be wise for you to talk to someone who is not so busy. So, I am surprised that she would want to tarnish my reputation in this way. This is not how I want things to go, and I try to avoid these situations. I hope everything goes well for this Angie's List member in the future.

It went very well. They were excellent. They were on time, the price was right, and they even moved up the time because they had an earlier availability. They were very respectful and engaged. We would definitely use their services again.

Thank you for this great review! My schedule is a moving target. These folks had the right size job at the right time. Another homeowner postponed their job, and I had painters ready to work. I am very happy that everything worked out here.

These folks are great! Barry came to our house for an estimate and he made me feel at ease. No high pressure and he had great advice on other parts of the project that he was not doing. Within a day or so, he emailed me a quote that I immediately thought was very fair. His contract was easily understood and he was flexible with changes made to it. Besides, I called him because of his impressive reviews on Angie's. The project wasn't to begin for a few weeks, and when the time finally came, the total painting project took three days (not consecutive because of other contractors). Barry and his team really like what they do and take pride in their work. Emily, who installed my glass tile back splash in the kitchen, did a beautiful job. On the days that Barry and his team were at my house, they were punctual, came ready to work with the paint that I selected, and were leaving the house at a reasonable time. Our house is about 60 years old, and thus the surfaces are not straight or even. The painting was done correctly in spite of this. Lines were crisp and the color application was even. Communication with Barry went exceptionally well. He (and I) appreciate email and Barry is prompt with responses. The same can also be said for the times we spoke on the phone. I highly recommend Barry Bush Home Improvements!

Thank you for the wonderful review! This is an example of how the majority of my projects go. There was a firm start date scheduled many weeks in advance. We were the finish team, and there were many delays from the other contractors who had to finish before we arrived. Even though there were delays and scheduling nightmares, we had great communication and everything got done. This was a great little project. I'm glad that you are so happy with the results and your experience with me and my team.

It went great! We scheduled the work to be done while my daughter was away at camp. Barry showed up on the day he promised and finished on the day he promised - even though it took a herculean effort to get the job done on time. His workers were wonderful people who did good work. They respected our home and kept things as clean as possible when doing plaster/drywall work in hallways and stairwells. I am a certified clean freak and I was very pleased with their clean-up especially after the day of sanding all the walls! The rooms they were not working in remained virtually dust-free and other areas were cleaned in a much better manner than contractors typically clean. I was thrilled (and relieved)! It has been about a week since the work was done and we have painted two of the rooms. The walls and ceilings in those rooms look fantastic.
Description of Work: We had the plaster wall in our daughter's room repaired as they had a lot of cracks in them. We also had drywall put up in a third floor stairwell and second floor hallway. Finally, we had drywall put up on another bedroom's ceiling and one wall in that room demolished and re- drywalled. Barry's company also painted the ceilings in the stairwell and hallway.

It is true that we almost did not make my promised time frame. We got out very late on the day that I said it would be done, but it was done and the house was clean. This did take quite a bit of effort to do. We agreed on a time frame, and I met that time frame. She said she had an aversion to dust, so we made an extra effort to keep the house clean. I am very happy that you were pleased with the work. Thank you for a great review!

Three years ago we bought a 100-year-old house that has a lot of "delayed maintenance" issues. We started a project stripping wallpaper and repairing some severely damaged walls, and then life took over and the project sat unfinished for a year. I finally reached out to Barry Bush after hearing several recommendations of his work. Barry immediately set up an appointment for later in the week, arrived for the appointment on time, and then followed up quickly with a competitive quote. We worked out a start date and Barry and his team arrived promptly on the day the work was to begin. His team was incredibly professional and detail oriented. They arrived on time, communicated any issues/problems and were courteous when family members happened to be in the house at the same time. They cleaned up at the end of each day and were careful in covering/moving belongings and other items. Most importantly, their work was top notch. I would recommend them to anyone looking for help with projects of a similar nature.

There are certain projects that I take on not because they are easy or close to home, but because they are a challenge and to make a difference. This job was extremely challenging due to the extensive repairs that were needed to the plaster after we removed the wallpaper. The wallpaper was rather difficult to remove, as well. Little did I know how hot it was going to be in that house, but I did know the difference we could make. It was a pleasure getting it done, and I am thankful for your great review.

This was an enjoyable job during the first heat wave of summer. It was nice to be outside again. The homeowner forgot to mention that we pressure washed her decks before repairing and staining them. Regardless, I'm sure she will be happy on her roof this summer with her freshly cleaned and painted deck. Thank you for the review!
