We hired Kelly’s Landscaping, Inc. for two projects: The first job was to redo a paver walkway in the front of our house. Issues:
- The cement sand spacing the paver blocks did not settle (harden) appropriately. The border pavers are now sinking and will need to be replaced.
- Drain installed to control water run-off formed puddles when it rained.
- Grass (re)planted near the new walkway was a different blade than the rest of the lawn (had to be replanted again – by me)
We discussed the issues with the pavers and the drain but the contractor did nothing to remedy the situation.
The second job was to install a paver walkway around our pool. After excavation of the existing walkway was completed and the work was well underway, the owner (Dan Kelly) made a comment that “he and his team took a class for pool paver installation during the winter…” Perhaps we should have stopped the work then but that's hindsight...
The work was finished in late April but was a completely and utterly unacceptable. Among the issues:
1) Busted pipe in the pool system: When installing the edging around the outside of the pavers, they drove a spike through a pool drainage line. We had to get the pool company to come out dig a hole and replace the pipe. Kelly’s did come back and redo the pavers near the damaged area.
2) The groove between the pavers and the coping that surrounds the perimeter of the pool: Kelly’s put cement sand in the groove instead of pool caulk which is what should be installed. They also removed some and misaligned other parts of the Styrofoam spacing that was installed originally with the pool (this is supposed to remain intact – i.e. replaced, not just pushed back down or discarded). In fact, parts of the Styrofoam were exposed – coming up through the cement sand. Kelly’s came back and redid the groove but did not replace the Styrofoam and the caulk they did install was uneven, discolored in spots and started to bubble in many places. They also let the caulk leak in between pavers. All of this made the job look cheap and the product of extremely poor craftsmanship. Any qualified professional working on pools knows how vital the Styrofoam spacing is for the integrity of the pool and its coping.
3) Cement sand within the pavers: Like the job on the front walkway, the cement sand did not harden/settle. This time, however, the sand got into the pool and harmed our equipment (several grids in the filter had to be replaced). Kelly’s came back and reapplied cement sand in pavers where gaps were obvious but there are still numerous areas where the cement sand is not even across the pavers (standard operating procedure would be to remove old cement sand and redo - not just top-coat). Again, several border pavers are now sinking and falling out of place and its only a few months since the job was done!
4) Uneven pavers: The initial installation left several areas where the pavers were uneven with the coping leaving a hazard for the kids to trip going into the pool. Additionally, puddles were forming when it rained indicating that the pavers were not level in several areas. Kelly’s came back and fixed the leveling around the coping but puddles still form.
5) Stones used to form the base for the pavers were left and mixed in all over the decorative river rock we had around the pool. While this is not as problematic as the other issues, similar to the use of a different type of grass seed vs. our existing lawn, it shows complete disregard for the professional pride in their work.
In summary, the work Kelly’s Landscaping did reflected poor and novice craftsmanship, lack of attention to detail and little to no
professional pride. Rarely did we see Dan Kelly out at the job site – even after the issues were identified. The workers who did the job did not speak English so we had very little opportunity to point out issues as the job was being done.
I would not only dissuade others from hiring Kelly’s Landscaping – I would warn other consumers not to even consider them.
They have a nice receptionist who scheduled the work on a slow day for us and showed up exactly on time.
My experience with landscapers in the past has always been poor.
I hope to use them for a re-seeding of my lawn at home .
