Note - bullet points are used to detail using only 3K characters: Project begins with meetings with Jerry Neville (JN), owner. ? We give JN a rough design of porch along with $100 quote fee ? JN assurs he has experience and can work with partial design. ? JN returns w/ initial offer and we pay $1500 retainer. Contract signed. ? Before porch, roof needs replacement, JN recommends Kevin?s Custom Carpentry (KCC). ? Quoted and contract signed. Roof replaced by KCC ? crew professional and efficient. Strange for us ? KCC (roofer) transitions into porch job. ? JN informs Kevin Berghold (KCC owner) is master carpenter. ? Job was given to a sub and we were never told beforehand. JN never did any work. Inadequate pitch problem surfaces when tongue and groove meranti hardwood floor is installed. ? Rained midway exposing puddles. ? Pictures shown to builder who offers to cut support posts to remedy. ? We okayed but believe he only cut one of the four posts. ? Floor installation completed. Puddles continue where floor dips. ? KCC says sanding will correct it. Beautiful new porch now overshadowed by the pitch problem. Meet with JN who concedes problem and assigns blame to KCC. ? Offers solution to take up floor, examine, and propose how to correct. ? JN wants to fix problem. We agreed to this approach. Times passes, JN calls and negates his initial solution. ? Assigns blame on us b/c rough design he agreed to use didn?t specify pitch. ? We counter that common sense should dictate an exterior tongue and groove floor requires adequate pitch. ? JN continues committed to make this right. Offers new solution to lift porch, cut supports, and lower again. Insists nothing will happen to the structure. New problem arises - floorboards warp under the column where KCC cut one of the support posts to create pitch. ? JN says warp is the result of a natural wood product, not construction. ? He offers to fix it. We were not confident the 2nd solution caused more good than harm. ? We consult a professional and decide the porch would resist the alteration. ? Second solution accepted w/ condition we had a clear description in writing and had a signed document to protect us. ? JN drafted the document and after modification we mutually agree to it, sign our copy, send it back for his signature and return. ? He never did. We learn JN is in legal dispute with KCC and JN tells us contact Berghold lawyer. ? It was not our job to contact his sub KCC. JN agrees to do so. ? JN adamant he would not spend any money to fix problem. Alternatively, we told JN to quote job w/ another carpenter and we would be open to look at a figure. ? Apparently no one wants to touch another builder?s work. We hit bottom with JN via numerous text messages states he was done with us, he did everything right, and to no longer talk to him but instead his lawyer.
Description of Work: The project included the demolition of the existing porch on the back of the house and the construction of a new custom porch to be screened. The porch included a 1" x 4" Meranti hardwood tongue and groove floor (vs. a conventional deck floor with spacing). In addition to the porch, the living room rear window was removed and replaced with a 5’ x 6’8” French door. The job also entailed other modifications including: the replacement and relocation of the living room radiator, the relocation of the water faucet from the back of the house to the side of it, a redesign of the water drainage system to keep water coming off the roof and the new porch away from the building, electrical.

Response from J NEVILLE CONSTRUCTION INC
I have been in business for twenty five years as a master carpenter and journeyman- and over eight years as a construction contractor. I have not had one complaint, in all of these years, regarding my work or business conduct. In fact, I attribute a great portion of my success to repeat business and have been sought out by the same clients for multiple construction projects, time and time again. Each and every time i begin a new project a list of over twenty-five references is handed directly to the home or business owner- I encourage them to call as many references as they wish as I am proud of a well developed craft, my personal work ethic, and a business I have spent many years, and much hard work building to support myself and family. Although, I embrace and appreciate the power of digital communication, for it;s avail to those seeking advice, connection, and as a vehicle for promotion e-commerce( as we all know, in these troubling times, we need to each and every opportunity.)Unfortunately, when accessed by the misguided - I'm also aware of the more devious potential of world-wide electronic communication. It can be used as a way to filter aggression and destruction toward upstanding and hard working citizens, and as a person who has literally worked tier fingers to the bone, I truly find this disturbing and unjustifiable. IN reference to the commentary on J. Neville Construction inc, displayed here - I'm afraid this is one of those unfortunate situations. The client supplied architectural drawings for the roof and deck, which were abided by precisely. The client signed a construction contract, which was abided by to a precise and accurate measure. As well, the entire project was constructed in accordance to the building code requirements, and was in fact inspected by Abington Township twice - as per requirements - with a satisfactory outcome. The roof and desk job discussed contracted and built, is complete in its entirety. I have communicated with the homeowner that if they would like further ascetic changes to their porch, roof, or any portion of their home, that they should contact a new carpenter themselves, as I am not interested in conducting business with them now or any time in the future. this, I'd like to note, is the first time I have ever felt the need to communicate the aforementioned message to any customer or client in twenty years. Regards, Jerry Neville Proprietor
