Toran Heating & Air Conditioning

My AC wasn't working very effectively during the heat wave, and was making some noise, so I called them to come to give me an estimate, I also wanted to have my unit serviced. The first call was answered by a very rude person, who shouted all the time -- granted there were a lot of background noise, but please, couldn't you step away for a minute?? He said he couldn't schedule me that day, but was going to call me back later, or the next day. Never happened. I called back three days later, and this time I did have an appointment. NO SHOW, NO CALL. I called the office 2 hours after the window, and was told Art was on the way over, and he should be in my house in a couple of hours. Didn't happen, and no call still. I called the office myself a couple of more times, they just told me he was on the way when they did bother to pick up the call. Finally Art showed up, only 5 hours late. No apologies whatsoever. He looked at the unit, found out the noise was due to an improperly inserted filter (the only reason I'm rating the company at C, otherwise will be F), and gave me a quote for regular maintenance. I asked if I should call the office to schedule the service, he said, no, the office would call me in 3 days. ok, I waited. The call never came. After 5 days I put them down on my black list. So, seriously, do yourself a favor and avoid these people.

Great! Prompt and reasonable estimate. Efficient and timely service. Art took the time to walk us through the mechanics of the new boiler and thermostat, and also helped us figure out the source of the water in our chimney.

Excellent. Toran was one of four companies we received estimates from. Art Toran was very descriptive in the estimate about what equipment he would be installing and what would be involved. We were able to look up the equipment online and look up Consumer Reports ratings about the brand.

Arthur Toran gave a very competitive estimate. After I signed the contract, his crew arrived in just a few days and completed the job in less than a day. The experience from start to finish was excellent as Arthur was prompt to return calls and to satisfy any of my concerns and questions.

The owner of the company came out to do the estimate. We set up an appointment to do the job about a week later. He came out exactly when he was suppposed to do. They were clean and hard working guys. The job took two days. I am very pleased.

We went with another company so we didn't use them.

Horrible, they rescheduled the estimate 2 times and never showed up for the 3rd scheduled appointment.

Excellent family-owned company. Art, the owner, was immediately responsive. Made an appointment and came right over to assess our needs and give a fair estimate. Five days later they installed the A/C system --a new technology called Mitsubishi Split--perfect for our old house with radiators. They installed 2 on-the-wall units, one downstairs and one in the master bedroom on 2nd floor. We chose Mitsubish Split because we could choose the rooms we wanted to A/C and add on later. All units are SILENT, even when running (including outside condenser). Highest Energy Star ratings,. We had heard of this unit from friend with a historic house and same radiator problems, and decided to pay the higher price. We're glad we did--the service from Toran couldn't have been better. Professional, friendly, and knowledgeable. And immediately accessible by cell phone should you have questions later. The beauty of the air conditioning was that we don?t use the whole house air conditioning. AND it delivers silent, even u coolness, controlled by a Remote mounted on the wall. You can program the Remote so it changes settings for different times of the day (e.g., when you're away, at night). AND there is a heat pump so on chilly autumn days you can heat one room without turning on your furnace! We're glad we went with Toran and with the Mitsubishi Split A/C. We've used it over 2 months now, and love it. I wish we'd replaced our window A/C units a few years ago. Now I'm bringing brochures to the church next door. Their ancient A/C unit is right outside our windows. They leave it on 24/7 and the condenser is so loud we can't open our windows or sit out in that side of our garden. It sounds like a diesel Semi truck with the motor running all night. Please, church, get Toran over to install Mitsubishi Split A/C.

Toran Heating was quick to respond to my initial request for estimate. I had several different estimates, but Toran heating was the most inexpensive for the comparable solution. It took several weeks before the work started because Art had injured his knee, but, once he gave me a date, they were true to their word. They came on the day and time I was given, were very courteous and as unobtrusive as they could be for this kind of job. I was very pleased with their attention to detail and the lack of disruption to my environment during the work and when they had finished.

Art Toran has done great work for us in the past as well. On this occasion, as a major heat wave hit, our AC died. Art came out promptly and diagnosed the problem. He ordered the replacement equipment immediately and returned within a few days to perform the work as soon as he received the blower motor. Art is honest, practical, and does superior work. I highly recommened him. He is a rare breed.

Art was very prompt coming for the initial meeting and he emailed me a detailed estimate promptly. I got 2 other estimates for this work and Art's was slightly less expensive. The York units come with a 10 year warranty and Toran Heating & A/C backs that up with 2 years of repairs should anything go wrong, which is a much better warranty than the other estimates promised. Art came back one evening to meet with my husband to answer a few of his questions. He was very knowledgeable and was able to describe the system in very concrete terms so we could understand everything that was required. He let me know at the last minute that the installation date was going to be a day later than he had originally scheduled because the unit was not in yet. The workmen arrived much later in the day than I would have expected and a 2 day job turned into a 3 day job, which was inconvenient for me. The said, the installers were very nice, polite and efficient and did a good job. Art came to the house for part of each day to make sure everything was going well. The area was kept clean and the unit works great. My husband discovered a rough piece of metal across the opening where the filter goes and Art came back and fixed it promptly. The old musty smell that used to come out of my old air conditioner is completely gone, for which I am very grateful.

Arthur gave us the best price by far amongst four companies for the identical products. He was very patient when we asked for pricing for only two indoor units as well, though we decided to go with three. Installation was scheduled for two weeks after we signed the contract and was supposed to take 2 days. The first day was incredibly frustrating for all when the supply house delivering the AC units directly to our house did not show up as promised at 9 am. The units did not arrive until around 1 pm, no fault of Toran. The two man crew began the job, and Arthur promised to send a third person along the next day. The three guys really hustled and completed the job by early afternoon of the second day. Joe, the crew foreman, was diligent about making sure the indoor units were exactly where we wanted them and about making sure the outside lines were as unobstrusive as possible. He went over everything with us before starting. They did a great job and despite the delay, got the job done as scheduled. We are very pleased with the quality of the job and just love having air conditioning for our entire second floor!

I called on a Wednesday to let him know the A/C wasn't working optimally. Due to the hot weather, the house was about 80 degrees. He showed up on Thursday to take a look at it. It turned out that the entire A/C unit was frozen, so it had to thaw out. Art returned promptly on Monday to fill it with gas & everything was back in working order. Art did provide some helpful feedback on proactive, recommended services so I could avoid this situation in the future. Art was punctual & very likeable. Fair pricing. I'll definitely call him again.

We had to replace the heating and A/C in a tiny 1832 Trinity row-house we had just purchased. We got two estimates, one from a company recommended by our realtor, the other from Toran Heating & Air Conditioning, which we found on Angie’s List. Mr. Toran’s estimate was 30% lower, and also far more detailed and professional. Mr. Toran had his sheet-metal technician come by separately so as to accurately calculate the expense of the new ductwork. Due to personal circumstances we had to wait over a year to have the work done. In the mean time, the building code for furnaces had changed, making the original plan impossible. Our house is too small for the larger return ducts now required. Mr. Toran came with his mechanic and together they examined the structure of the house and possible solutions to the challenge posed by its dimensions. They recommended a higher efficiency (95% afue) gas heater not requiring a new internal duct. The cost was only slightly higher than the original estimate. We were concerned about the appearance of a PVC pipe going 7 feet up the front of the house, as required by code; but it was done so elegantly, placed close to the existing drainpipe, that it looks completely unobtrusive. The job took three days. Mr. Toran’s team were courteous and expert. They kept their work area clean and minimally disrupted our lives. They had to take the old furnace apart in order to remove it via the narrow winding staircase; they were careful not to damage the floors or walls. Mr. Toran came by each day to supervise the work. He is straightforward, intelligent and honest, and we are extremely happy with the work done. I highly recommend his company for any HVAC job.

I called Toran heating to get an estimate for AC installation. We set up a time about one week later. Art came to do the estimate as scheduled in the evening. He surveyed the layout. I liked his plan. He supplied a written estimate by email a few days later. We agreed to the proposal and Art returned to the house to get a few more measurements and finalize the proposal. He said it would take a little more than a week to complete the work. I think it was completed in 7 working days. Everything was done as expected.

Art and his team were very professional and the quality of their work was top notch. The work was done much faster than I had expected and I was kept informed throughout the process. Art was present at my home for the majority of the installation to ensure that things were getting done properly and that I was satisfied. I would highly recommend this company for your HVAC needs.

My heating system mulfunctioned and the house became alarmingly cold. Initial emergency call was responded to in a reasonable and timely manner. After alternative repairs / replacements proposals were considered and discussed, a decision to replace the (old) heating system was made. Mr. Toran was honest , professional and courteous; I liked his manners and scheduled an installation date. The process was smooth; work was done professionally while cleanliness was maintained at all times. I will willingly and easily recommend Toran to anyone.

They are very knowledgeable. I also feel that their work was neat and clean. They were very reliable. I would highly recommend them.

Initially difficult to coordinate time for a quote, but Mr. Toran communicated appropriately as his schedule changed. I selected the company based on prior Angie's list reference that indicated experience with replacing an oil steam boiler. Mr. Toran was also diligent about answering questions I had around sizing of the boiler and the use of copper on iron with returns. The work started as scheduled and was completed in less than 4 days (as communicated). All remnants of the oil boiler and oil tank were removed, etc. The new boiler appears to be working fine. However, the work done by his crew (he was not there for most of the install) was sloppy. - The boiler was installed at an odd angle to the wall. Does not affect how it works, but it looks stupid (it did not occur to me to make this a formal requirement) - The boiler cover on the side with the water column, drain, etc. was cut in several places when installed to get it to fit around boiler pipes. Again, not critical to performance, but as I told Mr. Toran, it's like buying a new car with dents. - A cable wire was left hanging on the exhaust vent (which gets very hot). - The small insert that goes into the exhaust vent to limit cold air coming in was never installed. - One of two oil inlet pipes going to the outside was not blocked off (in their defense, 2 is not normal) - There were loose screws on the boiler cover in several places that I ended up tightening myself. Mr. Toran did return to talk through the punch list (after we had made final payment), and gave a verbal commitment that he would get a new cover and come back to install it as well as work through the other items on the punch list. It is now 2 months later, and we have not heard anything. I am a little torn in how to review this work. We got a working boiler, and the work was done on time and during consecutive days (ie minimized impact to the household). But the quality of work was not quite as good as hoped, and the lack of follow-up really disappointing.

I was comparing 4 companies and Toran was one of the 2 finalists. I went with Toran over a $500 difference in price. The install took 2 days as agreed upon but Toran was willing to leave the job considering it finished while the furnace was leaking, a hole had been made in a structural wall without being fixed and a pile of bricks lay on my sidewalk. Toran was nice but I expect contractors to be accountable for missteps and be pro-active about correcting their errors. I needed to be diligent about pointing out mistakes that were made and inquiring multiple times to set up 4 separate follow up visits. I wasted more of my time correcting the initial install issues than the benefit of the $500 I saved. I am sorry to say that in hindsight I would have gone with another company. 9/13/11- It has been a little over a year since the furnace was installed. I have had to install a dehumidifier due to all the moisture and I have had to call Sila to come and fix the issues. I would never recommend Toran and only regret I made my decision based on price. Working with Toran was the worst decision I have made as a home owner.

Our heating and air conditioning unit was very old, so we had Toran come in and replace it. It took less time than I had expected, and they were very professional. I would recommend again to anyone who needs Heating/AC needs in the Philadelphia area.

He was on vacation when I called, and he said he would be out to provide an estimate once he returned. I called later, and he said he would be out. He never called or came out, however.
