"[removed member name], I am sorry that you did not get punctual responses. Because this is a small company both owners are out working at the job sites which makes communication with them difficult. I see that we did this job for you back in 2009, hopefully you have enjoyed your pavers. Take care!"
Long story short - Stacey was difficult to communicate with. Several times, he was "in a seminar", or away on personal business, so it was hard to get a quick response. I was told when the job would start....and then it didn't......and then had to follow up to get a solid date - which never happened & his crew just showed up one day - unannounced. He rarely showed up to the job site himself (although he told me he was very hands-on). I work from home, so was able to see who was doing the work & he made a couple very brief appearances - but was not onsite 80% of the time or more.
I had to follow up several times when certain parts of the job weren't being addressed as they were supposed to be. I felt like I had to act as the project manager, when that shouldn't have been my role. After the job was completed, I had to follow up with him to ask for a credit for work that he didn't perform - again, should have come from him and not left up to the client to do the leg work on.
It's been a couple months & I just had to rent a rototiller to till the planting beds his crew blew about 8 inches of compost on top of. It should have been mixed in but wasn't. He said it wasn't because it was too muddy. Not sure how it was regraded if it was so muddy. I have pictures of the work & it was actually pretty dry. We had a very dry winter & it wasn't muddy. Because the compost wasn't tilled into the dirt, it sat on top & formed a hard shell that the water wouldn't penetrate. When you did dig a hole, you would get through the compost & down to cement-like clay. I could dig a hole, fill it with water & it would sit there for weeks. Now I have to till everything, working around buried irrigation lines, etc. Not cute.
Overall, I'm really disappointed. I have a nice lawn - sprinklers & a drainage swale - but I'm still left to deal w/ other drainage issues. I feel like he got the job, got the deposit & was on to his next job redoing some landscaping for a commercial client at Bridgeport. I've worked with several contractors, etc. in the past who have been hands-on, communicate well & follow through. This company just doesn't cut it. I wouldn't hire him again & definitely won't refer this company.
"I try to reply to all comments good and bad in a timely manner but i somehow missed this one. I am so sorry (removed member name) that this project did not go as you had hoped. Our goal is to have all of our customers completely satisfied with our work. On this project I was the project manager and I am hands on. My crew reported to me every morning and every night. I guess I should have communicated better to you that hands on is not me working in the field with the crew but rather me managing them and laying all all aspects of it as the layout was my design. During that time of year with the rains and what not, I try to get all of my re-certification hours (which is very important to me to stay on the cutting edge of new landscape trends) done and that happened to be taking place right at the middle of your job. I was always available by phone and if you could not get me I was able to call back that day and we talked or we communicated through email. I do want to stress that i am a project manager and not a crew member onsite all day everyday. We did battle with really wet conditions and the job was not done at the ideal time of year. You had a new house and the grading was not done correctly by your contractor. We regarded your entire back yard, created a natural stream bed to have a spot for water to drain and in my opinion was a very creative solution that has worked out really well and was about the only way to handle this drainage problem. When we work in the winter the game changes a little bit. We have limited equipment use and have to do more by hand and are somewhat limited. We had a mud hole and were able to dry the lawn area out with a "Claybuster soil" mix that is a best management practice and got the lawn in for you and it is thriving. We were unable to till the compost into the beds as it was too wet. We could not walk in those areas let alone run a tiller in them. We were going to come back and till after it dried out some and you let me know if we still had an issue. I did not ever hear back from you so if i dropped the ball, my sincere apologies! I hope that your yard is doing OK and things are thriving for you. Regards, Stacey Werner, president Tryon Creek Landscape, Inc."
Kevin Durrell and his helper did the boulder placements. He and Stacey encouraged us to "tweak" the locations so the arrangements was as we wanted. They were always professional and very patient.
