The quote is excellent ! so [] will be in touch very soon to make a deposit so we can get on the schedule. Thank you again for taking on our little project and we look forward to working with you - Response September 23 2016 Hi, thanks for contacting The Wood Doctor, we will be out of office until 9/27/16. We will respond to your email promptly when we return. Response September 26 2016 Sounds good hope to hear from you in the future. Email Response on September 28 2016 I am very sorry to inform you that we will not be able to take on your project. My installer has suffered an accident and will not be able to do any work for a long time. This is something completely out of my control, and I don’t have anyone else at this time that can do this type of work. Again please accept my apologizes for the time that was wasted on this but unfortunately I have no other resources to accomplish your project. I hope you will be able to find another contractor that can help you with this. Be aware, this contractor doesn't have the support to complete all jobs bid.
Description of Work: First Contact Email Sent on August 3 2016 Greetings, We have a odd, small project in need of your services. We tore up the carpet in a hallway (20 SF) and off the stairs (13 treads) and need them all replaced with new material. We would like to match the top nail narrow plank floor that is original to the house. We know this is white oak. We would like to provide the Oak material, unless you might be able to source salvaged materials. Would you please let us know your pricing, and scheduling? We were hoping to have this project wrapped up by mid month, however, we have been experiencing some flakiness with all the contractors we have been referred to thus far. Thank you kindly for the response!

Most of the time when I have had contractors come to my home, they call to confirm when they will be there, or if they can?t make it, they will let us know. So even though I anticipated they were coming, I was not completely prepared for when they showed up. However, they took care of everything for me, such as moving furniture, etc. They were great about it, and the two-day job ended up being completed in one day. They had to mix their own stain to match the coloring of the paneling throughout the room. They really brought my faded paneling back to life using a pickling method. The only issue I has was that I spoke with the gentleman who provided the bid about trim and wood putty work that was needed, so I assumed they would take care of it. However, I had to ask them to do this. I would advise anyone who works with them to itemize everything that needs to be done with the person providing the quote and with the people performing the job to ensure things do not get left out. When I asked, they were very accommodating and took care of all the details I asked for. They were very neat, clean, and professional, and when they tell you they will be there, they will be.
Description of Work: I have paneling in my living room. They rough-sanded and refinished the paneling.

They were not always on time. Stephans partner was rude and negative. If you take the partners attitude out of the equation, it would move the company to a solid B
Description of Work: The work performed was good quality. They completely stripped and refinished two solid cherry doors in our front entry. The doors were 20 years old and looked bad with streaking and water spots. When they were finished, they look almost new with the exception of a few minor spots in the molding crevices.

They were prompt, competitively priced (although not the least expensive), and did great work. Our cabinets now look brand new. They got the job done on time and within budget. They were careful not to track dirt or other construction debris in the house. We are very satisfied.
Description of Work: All cabinets in the home were refinished and stained. New knobs and hinges were added to cabinets as well. Banister was also refinished and re-stained.

IN the beginning we had several companies come in and give us bids and options on getting the cabinets repaired. Two of the companies voiced that the cabinets were too severely damaged and needed to be completely striped and refinished. with a cost that was between 4000 and 6000$. I had heard from a friend about a process called restoration. with that process i was told that aged or damaged cabinets could be brought back to looking new for a fairly inexpensive cost. Then asked both the businesses if they new anything about restoration both responded with thats not possible and doesn't work. To say the least I was not convinced. I then called my friend who told me about the restoration, she gave me a referral card for The Wood Doctor. Right from the start the wooddoctor crew made us feel comfortable about having them in our home. They seemed polite, professional, and trustworthy. I asked them about the restoration process. THey explained the process and told us the cost. In the short of it we preceded with them. THe results were awesome! The cabinets looked like new and cost was a fraction of what it would have cost to completely strip and refinish the cabinets. THANK YOU WOOD DOCTOR.
Description of Work: My elderly parents needed their oak cabinets in their kitchen repaired. The cabinets had over twenty years of use had started to show damage. The Wood Doctor came in and basically made the cabinets look new.

Stephen was prompt and courteous in the quotation phase. We had just moved into a 1910 Craftsman and were having several contract jobs performed. Stephen's crew arrived a week after we had replaced all of the old window glass with new double-pane windows. We work from the home and often have to make phone calls or join in on conference calls. The power tools used are very loud, and the crew often work with headphones on, singing or talking loudly as if no one was in the next room or upstairs. We had to ask them to be quiet on several occasions. It would be a good idea to advise clients of how loud the work can be. Also, we were surprised that hey did not have enough drop cloths to adequately protect all of the carpet and furniture in the dining room. We had to put down towels the night before to be safe. The evening after the work was completed in the dining room but before they started in the living room, we found numerous drips of stain on the wood floor. But far worse were the scratches on our brand new windows from one of the crew using a scotchbrite pad to clean them. Stephen brought in an outside contractor to estimate the cost of the repair, which was $300. Stephen complained to me that he would not make any money on the job after he paid for this -- which did not give me any confidence for what would follow. Stephen and his crew finished just before Memorial Day weekend. He asked me to pay him for the rest of the job, and I did. He said he would have the glass contractor contact me, but when the contractor called, he told me that Stephen had just cancelled the repair! I immediately canceled my check to Stephen and contacted him, telling him I would file suit if necessary to get the windows repaired. Stephen came by the house and apologized, saying that he had made a bad choice. On good faith I paid Stephen again. There was no more drama after that. It was several weeks before the contractor polished the windows, which had to do with the contractor's schedule, and and they are fine now. Stephen asked me to give him a review on Angie's List. I have waited 4 months, debating about whether I should. I want people to know that the overall job on the refurbished wood surfaces was good. But the problems we encountered make it very hard for me to recommend them. Perhaps Stephen was having a bad period in his business, I don't know. But it was the most difficult engagement we had with any contractor during the refurbishment of our "new" old house.

He was true to his price, even though we had to extend his contract. He gave a great suggestion to add a gloss finish to some existing cabinets. He was punctual and friendly. We did have some issues with the way the unforseen challenges were handled.

Description of Work: Nice guy. I think he meant well, but the quality of work is very mixed. We hired Stephen primarily to clean up our kitchen cherry cabinets from 20 years of use. This included a re-glossing, not a re-surfacing. At the same time, a cabinet maker rebuilt our island with new cherry panels that needed to be matched to the existing cabinets. Stephen promised several times that he could match "99%" to the other cabinets. Though we talked with him in detail about how he would achieve this (my husband is very knowledgeable in this area), Stephen was certain that he would be able to do this. When it became apparent that the match was not good, he initially said that he would "eat the cost" of having another contractor complete the job, which I thought was appropriate. He later asked my husband to share the cost. Because Stephen had seemed to be up front about the difficulty working with the new cherry, and our desire to have the job done right, my husband agreed to share the cost, but that we wanted to be very involved in the consultative process and with the new contractor. Long story short, the cost was very high, and we had little confidence in either of them. My husband ended up finishing the project beautifully. He also was to refinish the wood on the edges of our stairs. They look adequate, if no one looks closely. To us, they look poorly done, with a muddy looking finish. Stephen was also contracted to refinish a maple dresser and headboard. It was a poor job. I had to ask for more coats of finish because it felt sandy and unfinished. When the project was "complete" some of the drawers were very noticeably lighter than the others (some of this is related to the nature of maple). I asked him if he could darken the few drawers to match. He left the pulls and knobs on the drawers and varnished over the top of them!. If that weren't bad enough, because now I am not able to replace the pulls with a different shape- one of them had been replaced upside down when he varnished over the top, so when I turned it over the dresser showed an outline of the upside down handle. The sides of the dresser and the legs were done poorly, showing acid marks, and sanding that wasn't then varnished. The matching mirror was not finished well, with several edges sanded but not finished. The headboard is a bookshelf type. Looks good until I lie down and see into the spaces that there is slopped stripper all over the inside. And the trim pieces were sanded but only varnished on the front, though they had been finished fully from the factory. By the time I had spoken to Stephen several times about all of these things he needed to attend to, I just wanted him to be done, and gone. The dresser is used in the spare room, thank goodness. But I get mad every time I look at the set.

Response from The Wood Doctor
We have over 25 extremely positive reports on different sites across the web. This is the first and only negative report we have every received, and we take it very seriously. Our company is built on the foundation of integrity and customer satisfaction. It is very important to us to listen and understand what a customer wants and then try our very best to achieve that goal for them. Unfortunately what this report fails to mention is that we installed new crown molding on their kitchen cabinets along with redesigning their island to accommodate a new bigger stove. The restoration and color match on the crown molding and cabinets were beautiful. When it came time to stain the new solid cherry panels that we had installed on the redesigned island, the customer showed me a stain color that he thought looked good but in our estimation did not match at all. We spent an inordinate amount of time working on a custom color that would satisfy the customer and match the existing cabinets. We designed several different colors that to our eye were good matches, regrettable the customer did not see it that way. So to try and resolve our difference of opinion we went a step further and had another contractor design a color that to our trained eyes was a perfect match. Sorry to say the customer did not see it that way and decided to stain it himself. We offer two services restoration and complete stripping and refinishing. The refinishing process takes the finish completely off down to the bare wood, which can then be sanded and all imperfections removed. The customer decided to go with the less expensive option of restoring the stairs. With this technique not all of the damage is removed but is greatly improved by our unique process. I'm sorry they were not happy with the outcome, but if they would have chosen the more expensive option all of the damage would have been removed. I'm a little confused when it comes to the dresser. When we had finished the job she seemed very happy with how the dresser looked. Also we never use varnish on any of our restoration/refinishing projects, and we always remove all the hardware and pulls before starting any project. We will continue to strive for excellence in all the work that we do, and try and learn from this experience.

They started out on a Monday and ended the job late Thursday evening about 5:30 p.m. They were late in arriving sometimes up to 30 minutes. This did not bother my husband but, I am picky about being on time. They got right to work and worked hard. They were good to clean up and very pleasant to have around. It was all very easy. I would certainly have them again. My wood has never looked better.. thanks to the Wood Doctor!
Description of Work: The wood doctor restored our cherry cabinets in the kitchen and two bathrooms, and also restored our front door which was damaged from 22+ years of weather. All that they required was that we emptied the drawers and leave the cabinets as is. They covered the shelves with towels. EVERYTHING turned out even better than I had expected. The cabinets shine and the front door looks like new! They did a wonderful job with little or no intrusion into our daily lives. It was great!
We are very pleased with the work done by Stephen and his partner, who were friendly, courteous and professional. Our built-in bookcase looks amazing and the damage repairs turned out 10 times better than we had hoped! The project took 1 day longer than initially expected but we attribute this to the careful attention to detail exhibited by these men. There were no additional charges added due to the extra time needed to complete the job. Color match to existing woodwork was precise, clean-up was complete and odors were minimal. We will most certainly hire The Wood Doctors again and again for additional restoration work in our home. Job well done!

Our maple veneer cabinets had really lost their luster after 12 years of sun and water exposure. Stephen and Lauren, the wood doctors, worked miracles restoring them to almost original condition. They did all this with a minimum of down time for our kitchen. The whole job took only just a little over two days. They removed all the hardware, sanded where needed. They then applied their specially mixed stains and final coatings. All their products are water based and had absolutely no odor. Even the sanding dust was very well contained and didn't even necessitate clearing out all our cupboards. What a great process and now we have a like new kitchen. The added benefit was the bargain price compared to what a total refinish or refacing would have cost! A great company with a great product, would recommend them to anyone needing a similar service.
Description of Work: Completely restored all our kitchen cabinet doors including the wood panels on our large sub zero refrigerator.
