The Top Hatter

Two people showed up at the time agreed on; one went to work on the pellet stove, the other one on the dryer. They did a great job. Original work took place on 12/24, when I went to use the dryer a few days later, I noticed there was no exhaust outside. I called and they came out immediately to fix the problem. I will definitely use their services again... bonus, at time of service, they give an Angie's List member discount.

Started out great- Laura called me within minutes of completing the web form. They had a time available same day, which was great. Price was reasonable as well. The problems started after that. The technician didn't show up at the stated time, and no call came from him or the office. When I called to find out the status, I did not receive a call back. Only when I called again- at this point over an hour after the start time- did I receive a call from the technician, who stated something about his phone dying (hey it happens!). But he said he was nearby, so I was happy to wait. However another 30+ minutes went by and no call, no arrival. I called and canceled at that point- two hours after the start time. Too bad, actually. We used them before and were pleased. Now I won't bother calling them again.

Fabulous! Top Hatter techs cleaned the chimney and repaired the crown and installed a cover. They also advised me on the type of stove pipe needed and averted a possible problem. I am very grateful to the techs at Top Hatter. My contractor planned to install a gas exhaust pipe and I needed a wood stove pipe. The gas pipe would not have taken the heat and caused a potential problem. Got the correct pipe and installed it myself.

It went well. Cleaning a chimney is dirty work, but they kept the inside of the house clean. They have all the tools to do a thorough job on all the tasks.

Chris did a great job! He was respectful (covered his shoes with blue covers before entering the house), He arrived promptly - even a bit early. Introduced himself and got to work. It took about an hour. No problems reported on the safety inspection and he gave good ideas on the type of wood to burn and how often to have the chimney cleaned. Very friendly, hardworking guy. We will likely call him out soon to do our duct cleaning as well. Recommend!!

Prompt, friendly, courteous and clean service. Cost was even less than what was quoted. I highly recommend these people.

Amanda was fantastic. Great communication, excellent and proficient skill set, kept me informed of all activity. Worked swiftly, carefully, and even replaced a damaged duct hose for me at no cost. She cleaned up as she worked, there was no mess left behind. I would recommend her to anyone as a trustworthy and honest professional.

It went great and cost less than the estimate. They did an excellent job cleaning up before they left inside and out too.

Was very pleased with services performed. A pleasant experience all the way from the office making and confirming appointment to the cleaning and inspecting. Also a big help on suggesting the new screening. Workers showed up on time and were very good about keeping the house clean while working in the area. I would defineatly recommend them and also use them in the future.

What was done made a mess but did not fix anything.

The work seemed to go pretty well. However, there was a small fire in the chimney a year later. I am not sure if the job was not done well enough or if the fire was too small. We hadn't seen fire in the chimney prior to that. The part that we were not comfortable with was that one of the workers on the roof offered to clean the leaves out of the gutter since he was up there. I said yes, but later he said that his company would charge a couple of hundred dollars for that and that he would only ask for a $50 tip. He then talked to my husband and offered to clean the dryer duct for $50. When my husband told me this, I said no more, because I felt like we were being scammed. Recently, Top Hatter called for follow up service, my husband explained the situation, and they said that that employee no longer worked for them. Unfortunately, if left a bad taste in our mouth.

Technician was polite, punctual, and informative. He looked at and gave advice on a minor crack in the back of the chimney. Also replaced the crown on the chimney as it had worn away with time, and took the time to educate us on what to look for with chimney and fireplace care.

And in order to do it, they had to put additional brick on the house and used brick that didn't match quite right. The cold air still leaks through a little bit. I'd say that they completed the job, it just didn't necessarily 100% meet our expectations.

The owner and his son did the work. I marked everything 'A' in the rating, although it's been about 18 months and I don't remember the details. 'A' is what sticks in my mind, however, so maybe the passage of time provides us with an overall impression rather than a lot of details. I would definitely hire them again, and would recommend them to anyone who needed this service. They were meticulously clean, inside and out, which of course is of prime importance with fireplace residue! They were personable, and provided good descriptions of how the chimney is constructed, where the ash and soot tends to collect, and what they were doing each step of the way. Ours was way overdue, and they vacuumed out a lot of debris! I recall that the chimney cap was more expensive than I expected, but don't remember the details. Instead of galvanized steel, the owner only installs heavier gauge stainless steel to stand up to the heat and the weather. He made a convincing case, and I did not feel I was being pressured or 'up-sold' in any way. I don't want to 'wonder' about the quality in the future; I just want it to work, and keep working. I guess we'll know for sure in another ten years... Very professional, and a pleasure to work with.

It went perfectly. The two techs showed up earlier than expected which was great. They went right to work cleaning the chimney and then determined what my smoke problem was and fixed. it. I have used Top Hatter before and will use them again. The price was perfect and so was the service.

Didn't do a great job. Pretty superficial. Cleaned and put chimney cap back on pretty well. Just didn't get the main job done.

They were professional and the work was done in a very timely manner

We were going to have the Chimney cleaned if needed for a higher cost. An inspection is included in the price and the representative told us the Chimney didn't need a cleaning which saved us some money. We appreciated that. I graded the price with a "B" since I do feel that $99.00 is high for just an inspection, but am pleased to have had it done and know we don't have to worry for another year or two.

I was happy with the service and the price. They worked with me on the phone to explain everything they did (it was a lot of explaining, so don't call if you're short of time), and even worked with me on the price. The workers showed up close to the time they promised and even were kind to my 3 year old as she got in their way constantly. Nothing amazing, but a solid job done well. My dryer dries much better now too!

Great job by Chris from Top Hatter. Cleaned from top to bottom, no mess, not a trace of ash. Explained the process, provided some great info on keeping things clean, and pointed out some issues with the cap that were spot-on. I'm very happy with the results and look forward to using them each year after having gone through a number of other sweeps over the years that have gone out of business. Top Hatter has been around for a while and I can see why. Thanks.

They were punctual, offered a good price, and when they found a leak on the shoulder of my chimney they described an easy way for me to fix the problem myself rather than pay extra for the repair. This is my second time using them.
