Our upstairs neighbors hired Olson & Jones to do a major remodel of their home. In February, during the remodel of a bathroom above our kitchen & dining room, a pipe they were working on started to leak unnoticed, causing a flood in our condo while we were out of town. Damage to structures and belongings turned out to be extensive.a Jeff Jones assured us that this had never happened to their firm before. He was apologetic and said that they would handle it. They would not, however, do the work themselves because they don’t like working with insurance companies. A restoration company was hired by their insurance to do the work. Because the work at first appeared to be about 3-weeks-worth of effort, and our cat is sensitive to travel and change, my husband and I chose to stay in our condo, living in the back of the house with two bedrooms, and a bathroom. New issues continued to crop up, which dragged the process into May. At about 3 months in, with the new floors installed and near completion, Olson & Jones had another issue installing the new toilet in the upstairs remodel, springing another leak into our condo. We came home to find drops of water on the wood floor that was still curing and called the restoration service and Jeff Jones immediately (after finding a bucket!). At this point, Jeff Jones seemed more annoyed with the issue than apologetic. Apparently, this was now the second time this had ever happened to Olson & Jones. Lucky us. In the end, it was a full 4 months before we were able to get our furniture back and inhabit the kitchen, dining and living rooms. It was another 5 months before all work was complete. During that time, it was left to us to make sure that the work moved forward. It was also left to us to deal with insurances. In the end, we had to involve our insurance to cover depreciation that Olson & Jones’ insurance would not. This cost us a deductible, and a ding against our insurance which recommended that we not officially report the second leak as the pattern would risk our insurability. At the end of it all, we requested some compensation to cover loss of use, inconvenience and the cost of the months of effort to manage the situation. The insurance declined to provide any compensation, and Olson & Jones refused to even discuss the matter. While other reviewers may wind up giving them high marks for their remodeling capabilities, you should consider the damage that working with them could do to your relationship with your neighbors, or to your own downstairs rooms.

he actually did not address the real problem. His price was too high for what he suggested of fixing the problem. Wanted to do a heart transplant for symptoms of heart palpitation! Fed my tenants with false information through unauthorized conversations. Very unprofessional.

It went amazingly well. Every representative of Olson & Jones was professional, warm and courteous every step of the way. We chose them over other bids even though theirs was a little more expensive, because we felt great about the communication we had with them, because we felt we could trust them, and because we could see how much attention to detail had gone into putting together the bid -- in our minds, this meant (a) the bid was more likely to be accurate than the "other guy" who hadn't seemed to put as much thought into it and (b) we have detail-oriented guys here, which is great for a couple of detail-oriented kitchen shoppers :-). They provided us with a timetable for the work and stuck to it. They communicated every step of the way. The work was done amazingly well, whether by Olson & Jones employees or by personable, professional, experienced subs. When small things weren't perfect, they were on it immediately and had it fixed. I had heard so many nightmare stories about remodels going sideways that the whole time this was going on I kept thinking "it's not supposed to go this smoothly; when's the sh** gonna hit the fan?" -- and it never did! Simply cannot recommend these guys highly enough!

We picked Olson and Jones because the deck had been constructed by Jeff Olson when he was working alone and we were impressed with the quality of the work when we bought the house. It aged superbly and the construction itself was very unique. Jeff reviewed what needed to be done and gave us a very detailed timeline and estimate. The cost was very fair. Most of the work was done by Darren and a number of assistants. Darren worked on some of the hottest days of the summer but kept the job on track. The workmen showed up on time every day and explained everything they were doing and were very pleasant to work with. The job lasted several weeks and the work site was cleaned each day before they left. Where ever possible, Darren tried to save on costs by judicious use of materials. When they found part of the support beams had rotted and would need to be replaced, Jeff carefully explained what needed to be done and how it would change the estimate. When we got the bill, it contained a receipt for every single item purchased for the job, no matter how small an itemized list of the costs. The deck itself looks great. It's impossible to tell where the tree had been. With care, it should last another 15 years. We were very satisfied with Olson and Jones and would recommend them to anyone.
Description of Work: We have a 18 year old ,2000 sq ft mahogany deck that needed repair. A tree had been constructed growing through it and it had outgrown the opening and was damaging the deck. We had the tree cut down but the stump and the box around it weren't attractive. In additon, the privacy walls built around the deck were starting to bow outward because the ground was settlling under the deck supports. Finally, a retaining wall below the deck had bowed out by 18 inches and was in danger of failing. Olson and Jones removed the tree stump and the box around it, replaced the support beams under it which had rotteed, reinforced the side walls, and excavated and constructed a new retaining wall.

Initially they were very attentive, actually a bit too attentive. They then totally dropped off of the planet. They then told me we never paid them; I said they never sent me a bill. I was working with the contractor not the office which was a mistake. The contractor wouldn?t take my payment while the office was getting angry that I hadn?t paid. The price I was initially quoted has gone up as the work continues. The main issue is that the contractor was telling me on thing while the office wanted another about the status of the bill.
Description of Work: I hired them to work on water damage in a bathroom.

Response from Olson & Jones Construction, Inc.
Olson & Jones Construction strives to perform all of our work with honesty and caring. This is a case of a bill that went unpaid for over two months, even though the Member had no complaint regarding our work. We signed a contract on 9/24/10 to complete rot repair work on a duplex owned by this Member, who lives out of state. We communicated clearly the estimated costs in a proposal, which she accepted in a signed contract. We came in UNDER BUDGET for all of our originally estimated work. The member’s statement in her report: “the price I was initially quoted has gone up as the work continues” is misleading because she authorized the increase in scope and cost with two signed change orders. Work was completed on 10/18/2010, and she was sent a bill at the end of the month on 10/30/2010. The signed contract stated that bills are to be paid within 5 days of receiving them or incur a fee. We didn’t hear back from her for a month. On 11/30/2010 she finally told us that she never received a bill. We mailed another bill immediately and e-mailed a copy as well, but still we did not receive payment. After the e-mailed bill was sent, we recorded 10 more e-mails and multiple phone calls from our office requesting payment. Olson & Jones Construction does not have a policy of taking payments on a bill, but in this case we negotiated a payment plan on 1/13/2011 to accommodate the Member. An overdue bill is never a fun process for either party.

EMPLOYEES SMOKED IN THE HOUSE, OWNER GREGG OLSON DENIED THAT HIS EMPLOYEES DID IT EVEN THOUGH HOUSE STUNK LIKE SMOKE. TOLD HIS EMPLOYEES TO NOT SMOKE ON THE PROPERTY AFTERWARDS, THEY CONTINUED TO SMOKE ON THE PROPERTY AND DENIED IT AND GREGG OLSON DID NOTHING ABOUT IT. THE SAME WORKERS HIT MY DOG WITH THE COMPANY VAN AND GREGG OLSON REFUSED TO PAY VET BILL, I FILED A CLAIM WITH HIS INSURANCE CARRIER AND WAS ISSUED A CHECK.

Response from Olson & Jones Construction, Inc.
At Olson & Jones Construction, we believe the customer experience is as important as the finished product. We take great care to work with homeowners and respond to their requests. We believe this Member’s report inaccurately reflects our efforts to meet her needs. We’ve tried for the past 30 days to contact her to resolve the issue, but she has not responded. This Angieslist Member has never hired us. Her husband hired us for their basement remodel, and contrary to the member report above, he now continues to hire us for more projects because he is pleased with our company. According to company policy, crew members may smoke in their vehicles during breaks. Their clothes may have smelled of smoke when they returned to work in the house, but our crew never smoked in the house. At one point, this Member’s husband (who is the homeowner and our client) even invited two employees to smoke with him outside the house. After the first complaint from this Member, all workers took smoke breaks off the property. One employee was backing up a van and thought he might have made contact with one of the 3 dogs that are often lying around in the driveway. He immediately went to our client, this Member’s husband, and reported the incident. Though no injury was apparent, a vet admitted there was a chance of a bruised rib, obligating a reimbursement from the insurance company.

They deserve "A's" across the board. There were things here and there, but I was very happy with the way that they were resolved, and the speed in which they were resolved.

Our project manager, Frank Bradley, was pleasant, prompt and professional from the first contact. He quickly provided us with a detailed budget and rough timeline which both turned out to be quite accurate. O & J was quick to handle little "surprises", like when the mounting for one of our toilets was discovered to be dicy, or when some bath tub caulking material didn't stick properly. Our experiences with O & J employees and sub-contractors was excellent: all professional yet friendly and very capable. All of the subs visited our home before the final budget was put together which helped make it a very realistic estimate of the final cost. It also gave us a chance to discuss our expectations with each of the subs, which gave us considerable confidence in leaving our home in their hands.
Description of Work: Refinished kitchen cabinets, replaced kitchen sink & plumbing with new, "tile-in" sink, refaced bath cabinets, replaced flooring in kitchen, bath and entry, refinished dining room wall (open grain cedar), repaired/replaced plank in living room wall (open grain cedar), refinished 18 windows trim in living room, replaced baseboards with ceramic tile in master bath, remove and re-support two toilets, replaced caulk/grout in master bath tub enclosure, repaired grout in kitchen granite tile counters, repainted 2 bathrooms, kitchen and utility room and replace a stall shower door with a custom-fit door.
