Aside from it being the middle of winter, and holiday season which made it seem like a long project, all the work went very well, and all the workers were friendly and professional and got the work done in a resonable time frame. I don't know much about how to rate the insulation, but I do know that the attention to detail on the siding job was fantastic! all trim and details were not over looked. I was additionally very very pleased with the attention to cleaning up and keeping the house nice throughout the project. If you can afford them, they are worth it.
Description of Work: Neil Kelly was our contractor when we did the "clean energy works" program to upgrade our home for a tighter "envelope" and better insulation. Kattie Martin managed our project and was extremely approachable and responsive. They insulated our attic, all walls and some random side spaces. We opted to contract them to re-side our house since we were looking to have that done at the same time as getting blow-in insulation. Also added on changing our entry and side doors to fiberglass, and changing out 2 old and broken alluminum windows.

I would not contact Neil Kelly again about doing work for me.
Description of Work: It took several weeks after first contacting Neil Kelly to get a call back. We finally made an appointment and he showed up on time and gave a very good look over the project. He was very nice and easy to talk to about the work to be done. However, I never received a bid. After about 3 weeks, I called to see if he was even interested in the job. He told me he was and would get the bid out the next day. After over 2 months, I still have never received a bid on the job.

Excellent. When we applied for financing through the Energy Works Program, Neil Kelly was the contractor that we were first introduced to. Their representative met with us and explored our house and our goals, asked direct and important questions and followed up with a thorough bid outlining his recommendations for describing the best ways to meet our energy goals. His recommendations were all advised to lower our energy footprint and make our home more comfortable in the winter. I shared his report with a friend of mine who works in real estate and was told that item for item I could get a better price working direct with the service providers. i asked the Neil Kelly representative about his bid and he admitted that we could find cheaper contractors or through the providers directly. He was unapologetic as he explained the value of working with his company, the smoothness of work I could expect, the quality of work I could count on and the warranty on the work and products that I would receive. I stayed with Neil Kelly and I am glad that I did. As with most major projects, bumps came up along the way. Although his workers were at times inconvenienced (like when replacing a window they found an ant farm and had to rebuild the frame-in the rain) or when during the walk-through the Neil Kelly supervisor asked the workers to redo some of the work as it was not up to her standard- and she graciously explained to me with a smile that it was a good learning opportunity for them, or when I was unhappy with the door that I choose and they kindly ordered a replacement, the customer service and the quality of the work was never below excellent. i trusted their choices for the plumber, electrician and other vendors and I was happy with each without exception. I felt that my satisfaction was a priority throughout the project and each person that I dealt with happily worked with and around my family's sometimes hectic life. I have enjoyed the comfort of my well insulated home, the joy of my new furnace, the wonder of my tankless water heater, the amazement of the incredible bathroom fan that was recommended and installed, the beauty of my new windows and the happiness of having my attic sealed off with a quality door. I would recommend Neil Kelly highly and I tell all of my friends that it is true: you get what you pay for!
Description of Work: insulation, new furnace, new water heater, two new windows, new fan for bathroom, new door for attic
Working with Neil Kelly was a wonderful experience. The contractors work was exceptional and they kept to the schedule. It wasn't a stressful experience and by seeing the contractors work, I was confident that we had people working in our home that knew what they were doing and were professionals. Overall, it was a pleasant experience, and our finished kitchen exceeded my expectations in beauty and functionality, I highly recommend Neil Kelly for any remodeling of your home. I will definately be using them in the future.
Description of Work: Working with Neil Kelly was a pleasant experience. I worked with a Neil Kelly designer to give my kitchen an updated look. From the beginning, the designer was involved in the process. She met my husband and I at our home. I told her what I envisioned for my kitchen. I wanted to keep all the orignial cabinets, but install a new island which would include a new kitchen sink. I also wanted the old tile countertops replaced with new engineered stone. I wanted the island to be a cherry cabinet with bead board and have matching beadboad and crown molding above the exhaust hood that extended from the exhaust hood to the kitchen ceiling. The designer looked at our kitchen and took notes. The designer brought the project manager to our home, and introduced us. They discussed with us how they would protect our floors, and existing cabinets, took measurements and discussed how the work would be done. After we picked out the island cabinet color, engineered stone, new sink, faucet, dishwasher, garbage disposal, the designer had a schematic drawn to show us how the completed kitchen would look and were provided with a timeline from the project manager showing what work would be done on what days, and the times that the contractors would be at our home. The work took about 5 weeks, and it far exceeded my expectations. The project manager called the contractors daily on their cell phones to ask about the status of their work and was often on site to look at the progress, answer questions and to anticipate any problems. The designer was onsite with the tile mason laying out the tile to get the right look .

We used Neil Kelly to install new home energy materials in our home. There were incredibly professional and terrific. The job site was perfectly clean, and they were top notch! While they were working, they discovered an electrical wiring problem. They called in an electrician for the repair so they could continue to work. We are very pleased with their service and would use them again if need be.
Description of Work: Neil Kelly provides and installs home energy materials in homes.
On time, on budget, fully professional. We called them because an interior corner in our cedar siding appeared rotten. They opened it up and...together...we assessed the cause (moisture control and old ant infestation), and they proceeded to so the necessary structural and siding repairs so we could paint and finish. We also asked them to look at second story window trim. They discovered metal flashing had never been installed at all, so they inspected around windows, removed all rotten trim, installed new metal trim and mouldings and caulked, ready for painting. All done very well. Totally please.
Description of Work: Neil Kelly investigated some rotten siding, assessed any carpenter ant damage (minimal) and performed the necessary repairs to bring our home back to "normal." Also replaced metal flashing and window trim in second story windows. This is just our most recent project. We have used them consistently for years.

Not a day has gone by that my wife and I do not appreciate and enjoy the results. A great job by a great crew of man and women. Everyone was pleasant and easy to work with. Quality work does require to be paid for; therefore, we paid well for the remodel project, but the work was superb, and in our humble opinion, well worth it.
Description of Work: My wife and I have enjoyed our house for 20 years, but it needed to be updated. Our project included complete kitchen, complete master bedroom and master bathroom, new flooring upstairs and downstairs (carpet, hardwood, vinyl and cork) complete interior repainting, some new windows, and updating the utility and laundry room. This was a huge project for us. Something we could not risk to just any remodeler. 2-3 months was spent on just the planning alone. But it was worth the time, because when the job started, it just went like clockwork. Any changes we made after we started were completely needed to keep the house in tip-top condition.

Joel Fraley was our designer and Paul Louis was the project manager. Both Joel and Paul were wonderful to work with. They were professional, responsive, and really know what they are doing. Joel worked with us for months before we finalized the design. Before the work began, Paul developed a timeline of everything that would happen. All the subcontractors were coordinated beautifully and we were completely on schedule until we hit one glitch, the wrong tile was delivered. Paul then moved people around so that we didn't have to wait for the tile to arrive before we could proceed, and the final delay was quite short. There were a couple of things that could have been done better. For example, when the cabinets arrived, no one checked their dimensions against the plans before they were installed. A couple cabinets were the wrong size. But to their credit (I was seriously impressed) they had the cabinets pulled out and the replacement ones came quickly. There were a few other examples of missteps like this, however in every case Joel & Paul willingly fixed the problem. Oh, and another great thing is that they did quite a bit of work that we found along the way without charging extra. For example, they added a new faucet to my basement laundry sink and new shut-off valves to the washing machine. They even helped us to install the Ikea cabinets that we bought for the new office area (this was not ever in the contract as we weren't sure what we were going to do with the space when the project got started) for free. This was a BIG deal as we realized when working with the man who was helping us. We could NOT have done it correctly if he hadn't been there. I would definitely describe myself as detail oriented and I had a lot of interaction with Joel and Paul throughout this process (I'm not a sit back and let them just do their job type person) and I can absolutely recommend them, and Neil Kelly, based on this remodel.
Description of Work: Our entire kitchen, 1st floor bathroom, and the unused space between them was taken down to the studs and rebuilt. In addition we removed an old chimney from the basement through 2 stories and the attic; added a laundry chute and floor space where the chimney used to be; reframed a small opening to enlarge the kitchen by 6 ft (complex reframing of load bearing walls); reframed the floor on the entire back section of the house; put in a new water line from the street to the house; and put in a new 95% efficiency furnace. The job included everything you could imagine: demo, framing, all new electrical in the remodeled area, new plumbing (including through the basement and they ran new plumbing to the 2nd floor bathroom which sits above the kitchen), a new ceiling, insulation, drywall, custom cabinets, countertops, electrical and plumbing fixtures. Also we added a new back door and a new window.

Bottom line - they did great work, they managed the project very well, and the cost was the same as another quote I got. I first worked with a different reputable company to figure out what weatherization should be done. We had a unique situation and I was just not comfortable with the advice of the company. (I also was doing a lot of research online to educate myself). I called Neil Kelly because we had them do a Home Performance audit about 5 years ago (without doing any work) and I wanted to ask about some of those results. They couldn't find the report, so offered to update the testing for free. I took them up on it. The person responsible for making the recommendations has had extensive experience in construction - not just training in weatherization. This really helped with our unique situation, and he listened to what we were trying to accomplish. His advice on what should be done made so much sense to me that we decided to have them do the work. Also, their price was about the same as the other company. I had expected it to be more, since my impression of the Neil Kelly reputation is great work but really expensive. We asked several questions about whether we could do part of the work ourselves to save some money. They were very generous with this discussion. We did do some of the work ourselves, and were glad about what we decided to do, and what we decided not to do. The project manager visited our house to review the work and be familiar with our home. The sub contractors and Neil Kelly folks showed up to do the work when expected. Some unexpected things happened, as I suspect they always do in construction work, but I didn' t mind because the project manager always kept me informed, and worked with my schedule. Here is what impressed me the most: the project manager always came to inspect the work. If there was something that she thought should be better, she had the workers come back and make the improvements. She found things that I would never have noticed. ( I think this was especially important for the subcontractors work). She came at the start of the project, during the project, and at the end. If weatherization/door/window work is done wrong, there can be damaging consequences on a house. This is why I will always want Neil Kelly to do any work that we need - I am very confident that they will make sure the work is done right.
Description of Work: They first did a Home Performance audit, which included a door blower test, and an extensive test of the heater ducts. Based on the results of those tests, and discussion with us about what we wanted to achieve, they proposed what should be done. This included insulation in our crawl space, air sealing, more insulation in the attic, weather stripping on our doors. During this work they found a door and a window with dry rot, and we asked them to replace both of these. After the work was completed, they performed both tests again to see if the improvement was adequate, and it was. Also to make sure we improved enough to qualify for tax credits, which we did.

The project started on July 5 with a complete gutting of the bathroom it ended on September 6 with a completely new bathroom. The timeline provided by Dan Moore with Neil Kelly was followed with few exceptions and the plumbers, electricians, tile/marbel installers and painters were there when they said they would be. If something came up and the schedule needed to be changed we were always given notice. Janel Campbell, our designer, was available during the process to answer any questions that came up.
Description of Work: Our 1990's bathroom was in need of an update, from the carpeted floor to the all white cabinets and tile it had a bad case of the blahs. We had used Neil Kelly company in the past for a kitchen remodel and found them to be great to work with. On this project Janel Campbell was our designer and from our first meeting with her she understood our wants and needs and had a vision for the project which was outstanding. Dan Moore was the project manager for our remodel and he was courteous, knowledgeable and available when needed. The contractors used on our project were professional and all did an excellent job, the tile work in particular is wonderful. We couldn't be happier with the results of our bathroom remodel and now feel that our 90's blah bathroom is a spa-like retreat.

They performed the work well. They seemed to know what they were doing. They figured out the high level of fuel coming out of the water heater in the furnace. It had to be fixed right away. I feel they charged too much. They submitted a very high bid for sealing the house. That’s the reason I didn’t choose them. I’m having a very hard time to get them to submit the paper work for rebate. I’m not very happy with them but the work they performed was fine. I will have to call them again the third time. I paid them and they are not responding also. I won’t use them again.

We are a well established, full service, Home Performance contractor with a team of highly experienced staff. Even with professional Project Management and a 5-year warranty on our work, Home Performance audits with Neil Kelly are priced at the low end of the fair market value. Where we did file for this homeowner’s incentives, the time frame for the incentives is 8-12 weeks from filing and is accomplished with the Energy Trust of Oregon. The actual date the homeowner receives the incentives is beyond our control.

When Barbara came to our home she looked at our guest bathroom and indicated that our budget of $7K was pretty reasonable since it was just involving cosmetic work. We were very surprised at her office to be presented with an estimate of $18K-$20K. Her estimate included design work, permits, job site prep, demo of counter, sink, faucet, tile floor, tub/shower fixtures, new exhaust fan & sheet metal work, new undermount sink, new faucet, new fixtures in tub/shower, drywall repair for plumbing access, carrara marble countertop, new tile in shower niche, gray tile floor, ceiling light fixture & paint. I felt like this was a pretty straightforward project and so I managed it myself - I picked out all the design elements and I hired professionals for each part of the project (aside from the painting, which I did myself). Compared to NK's original estimate, we ended up not needing to knock the shower wall down to replace the fixtures (they said this was absolutely necessary but my plumber was able to replace all fixtures with taking out just a small amount of tile) - this saved us a lot of time & money. I was able to get everything else in the NK estimate plus a 3 new custom wood cabinet doors, 1 new medicine cabinet frame, and 4 new drawer faces, all for a grand total of $10K - pretty much half the price of the estimate, and I didn't take shortcuts - I used professionals and I got top of the line finishes - carrara marble counter, Ann Sacks limestone tile floor, Kohler sink, Kohler faucet, Kohler jacuzzi jets, Kohler bath trim/faucet & shower head, Rejuvenation hardware for cabinets, and Restoration Hardware light fixtures. The newly remodeled guest bathroom looks great - we saved money to put towards the master bath which is definitely a larger project for which we'll need a contractor & designer. Unfortunately, NK's estimate for our small guest bathroom was so inflated that I can't consider them for our larger project, even though that estimate may be more in line with the actual cost.
Description of Work: Neil Kelly provided two estimates for us - 1 for our guest bathroom cosmetic remodel ($18K - $20K) and 1 for our master bathroom complete remodel ($42K - $47K). I went to NK first because they did our kitchen for the previous owners of my new home, and the kitchen is very nice. We did not end up going with Neil Kelly because the estimate for the guest bath was very high. We met Barbara at a free bathroom remodel seminar, and that was helpful. She later came to our home to see our projects and then we met at her office for estimates. Barbara was nice and helpful, but we just didn't feel like the price was justified - We have no problem paying for quality work, but I feel like we would have been overpaying. The estimate for the guest bath remodel was very high, while the estimate for the master bath seems more reasonable. In this review I'm focusing on the guest bath remodel because we ended up doing it ourselves for $10K.

Response from Neil Kelly Company
Clients have been coming to – and coming back to – Neil Kelly for over 64 years because they want the services, the guaranteed quality, and the value we provide. Neil Kelly is the 4th largest remodeling firm in the country and has completed over 30,000 home improvement projects for our customers, all in the Pacific Northwest. That strength comes from customer loyalty, and we work very hard to earn it. Do-it-Yourselfers with the skill, the time and the inclination can certainly save money by doing their own work and their own contracting, as expressed by Ms. Gibson. The homeowner’s skill and expertise in this arena will be reflected in the quality of the project and for many talented homeowners this a viable option. Neil Kelly customers choose us for the following reasons: • Top-quality design. Whether for kitchens, baths, additions, small projects or complete home makeovers, Neil Kelly designers consistently are among the top award winners of the industry. • Accountability. Because the Neil Kelly Designer works hand in hand with the Neil Kelly Project Manager from the first day of the project, there is never a disconnect between design and construction. And for the homeowner, this means one source of accountability, one company to stand behind the job…the entire job. • Warranty. The work performed by Neil Kelly is guaranteed for 5 years. Our customers recognize that a one-year warranty is the common standard for the remodeling industry and they value the extra protection they get with Neil Kelly. • Security. Every carpenter, trade contractor or vendor who steps into a client’s home for a Neil Kelly project has earned the right to wear the Neil Kelly badge. The Neil Kelly vetting process assesses skill levels, security background checks, and a drug/alcohol screening process. Our customers appreciate that. • Competitive bids. Homeowners know the best value can be obtained through healthy competition. Which is why Neil Kelly secures competitive bids from our approved and vetted (see ‘Security’ above) trade contractors on every job we do. The result is superior quality at the best price. • Firm price guarantee. Before the contract is signed, the homeowner knows the exact price the project will cost in the end. We don’t include risky estimates or allowances in our contracts. Our customers have complete peace of mind about the project cost before we even begin. • Overall Value. Design...One Source Accountability...5 Year Warranty…Homeowner Security…Competitive Bidding….Price Guarantee. All these elements add up to the value offered by Neil Kelly. Not everyone prioritizes these elements. Customers of Neil Kelly do. And that’s why we’ve been serving - and thrilling - our customers for over 64 years.

The project went great. We have worked with Neil Kelly on two previous projects, so they have obviously done a good job for us, or we would not keep using them. We knew that they were a bit more expensive, but we think it is worth it. Here are just four of the major reasons: From the beginnning, our Neil Kelly designer, Jamel Campbell, designed an aesthetically beautiful space that also captured our needs for a bigger shower and more storage. The result was a Zen-like masterpiece. We are delighted every time we walk into the room. The project manager, Dan, not only came onsite regularly and made sure all the work was done well, he kept us informed from the beginning, and even arranged to speed things up in places so they finished ahead of schedule. We have complete trust in him and his team. There was one subcontractor that needed to address the dust control more thoroughly, and Dan and Janel were both onsite that day to address the issue before we even knew about it. The lead carpenter, Jason, was phenomenal. He is not only reliable, but also talented, careful, neat, personable, and responsible. In fact, Jason’s work on a stair railing for our previous project qualifies as a work of art! Both Jason and Dan were diligent, professional, and treated our home with great care and concern. Neil Kelly uses environment-friendly approaches to their work. For example, they donated our used cabinets to Habit for Humanity and they recyle everything humanly possible. So yes, they were probably more expensive, but we had such complete trust in them that we handed over the keys and left on vacation for part of the remodel. That kind of trusting relationship is worth quite a bit.
Description of Work: This was a remodel of our master bathroom, and it involved designing a custom shower, along with gutting most of the rest of the bathroom and installing almost everything new except the toilet. There was one area we wanted to leave the same, and the designer, Janel Campbell, helped to ensure that everything blended perfectly. The custom shower involved a great tile design by Janel and we appreciated her excellent guidance on picking tiles and other fixtures. We also appreciated that she suggested some extra safety features that were added as options. These features will allow us to stay in our home longer as we get older, but we would have had to pay much more to have them installed later, so this was really helpful.

at neil kelly the customer comes first. and yes, that comes at a price. however we very much appreciated their professionalism, quality of work and materials from neil kelly and their subcontractors, their responsiveness; workattitude; the efforts to get the materials we wanted; and openness. every few days the project manager we went through the process with us and any mistakes/setbacks (that happen at ANY makeover) were promptly resolved. great TEAMWORK neil kelly.

This is the second remodel that Neil Kelly has done for us with the same team and again we are extremely pleased. Our team of Janel Cambell, Designer, and Dan Moore, Project Manager, did an amazing job for us. With a rough sketch I did of what I wanted, Janel turned the design and selection process into perfect reality and really worked with us on the budget. We replaced the vanity with beautiful wood cabinets and a granite countertop; moved and replaced the sink, put in a new mirror, tile flooring, new toilet, new sliding shower doors, new hardware and faucet; replaced overhead fan; replaced a bi-fold door with a pocket door; and painted. Jason, our main carpenter and installer was simply amazing, but we also had a few sub-contractors that did an excellent job and were worked into the schedule seemlessly. Dan coordinated the schedule perfectly so that every day something was being accomplished and in the appropriate order. This is where Neil Kelly shines -- the execution is spot on. Every step of the way was planned, completed and on schedule. We knew exactly what to expect from day to day and we were completely satisfied.and delighted. Neil Kelly is so thorough throughout the process and uses the best people. The fact that they were willing to work within our budget for the most professional work was icing on the cake.

The CEO of this company, Tom Kelly, contacted me after reading my negative report. He acknowleged that the quotation process had not gone well due to the staff member involved, and assured me that this was a rare occurance. He also learned that the dates in my report were accurate, and accepted them after being shown proof. I commend Tom Kelly for his efforts to provide a better customer experience, and I would give them another try in the future. If I were rating Tom Kelly and not my experience with his staff member, I'd have been able to give a much higher rating.
Description of Work: I called Neil Kelly to ask if they handled water damage repairs. The contact told me that they don't usually work with insurance companies, because "those insurance companies just pay lower-quality contractors and we're in a different category." However he said he'd come the following week to give me an estimate. Once here, he constantly tried to "upsell" me to spend more than necessary for work that I didn't ask him to quote on; as an example, he said I needed a new sliding glass door (the door was fine, it just needed to be reset, but not only did he say I needed a new door, he said I should upgrade to a more expensive model). He also said some pre-existing nail pops needed to be repaired ... but that was not requested or needed, since there were only a few and I didn't even notice them. He acted so arrogant and told me they charge $80/hr but for our building the cost would be $90/hr -- only because it's a complex of 11 attached homes. However, when asked why their hourly charge is more for an attached home than a single family home, he couldn't answer the question, instead saying "well we're a union shop so I guess it has something to do with the union rules." He mentioned doing other repairs that I didn't ask him to quote on (since this was being paid for by insurance, only specific items were requested, but he repeatedly ignored that). When he left after being here for about 45 minutes, he said he'd had the quote to me by "no later than this weekend." That would have been 1-1-11. The following day I sent him photos of the roof that he could give his roofer -- he said his roofer would come out "within a few days" but I never heard another word from either the estimator or the roofing subcontractor. Finally, 11 days later ... with no phone call and no email notice, I walked out to my car and found him in my driveway! He hadn't even rung my doorbell but instead was out in the middle of the driveway with a dog on a leash, talking to a contractor who he said was his roofer. He said, "we came by today to give you a quote but I see you already have another roofer here." I replied, "you never got back to me with a quote." I was annoyed that he remained in our driveway even after I drove away. He is so unprofessional! I would never recommend this company when they operate in such a sloppy manner. Later this afternoon, he FINALLY emailed me a quote (11 days after his visit) and it was for $42,000. -- more than 4 times more expensive than THREE other licensed general contractors' bids. It was laughable, especially considering his terrible attitude and very poor customer service.

Response from Neil Kelly Company
We are a 63 year old company with 120 employees and 30,000 previous clients. We interview all of our clients to determine their satisfaction, using an outside firm, and find that 98% are satisfied and would use us again. This consumer did not use our services and is clearly wanting to damage our reputation. I have interviewed our employee and first need to mention that last week we received an all “A” Angie’s List review on a project completed by this individual. I want to stress that in that instance, we did the work. The consumer called us on the 21st of December and our employee set an appointment with her for the 27th. He was there when he said he would be and as part of their meeting it was agreed that he would have an estimate within five days of receipt of the photos the prospect indicated she would forward. Our employee received those photos on the 27th, and had he kept his five day commitment, he would have had a proposal back to the prospect by the 3rd, but was in fact four days beyond that date. We would give him some grace due the fact that this was over the holiday, but he was still late. He should have called ahead, but was there to view the roof and he made the judgment not to call. The price was submitted to the prospect that same day. When our employee came to the site, there was another contractor working on the roof, but the prospect indicated she still wanted an estimate from us. The prospect said we were four times the price of other contractors. We do try to be thorough with our estimates and we are not trying to be the low cost provider. We do quality work for a fair price. We can’t fully respond to this criticism as we do not have a record of what the other contractors bid on. If our prices were actually four times others, we would not get any work –period. Could we have handled this better? Sure. But, frankly, we provided a fair amount of free service. Our policy is to not take on insurance work as we have a great deal of difficulty matching client expectations with what the insurance companies are willing to pay. Our employee was granting a favor by preparing a quote in deference to our policy. We have been over this with our employee and are expecting better communication on his part, but we don’t agree that the tone of the critique is warranted under the circumstances and would present our long term reputation as a highly regarded contractor in our market. It should also be noted that the consumer elected to place the complaint on Angie’s List while never giving my management team a chance to respond. Tom Kelly, President, Neil Kelly Company, Inc.

The price included the services as well as the materials to install the doors. I really like the leadership of the team. We had a minor glitch that is in the process of being resolved. Overall, I am very happy with the team.
