Response from Mt. Tabor Construction
Dear Member, As you are well aware, Portland has been experiencing unprecedented growth in home sales, home repairs and remodels for the past four years. Even with this growth. Mt. Tabor Construction has been able to handle the increase in volume of phone calls, texts and emails without increasing our overhead. We are a small company and stay competitive by keeping our costs low. This being said, when I answered your call, I told you that I was working on a large remodel project and would be unable to leave it in order to bid yours. I also mentioned that our over the phone policy is to ask for a "ball park" budget upfront to see if we were on the same page. In review, I answered your call, was completely honest with you concerning my availability and budget policy, and for this I get a "C" grade. Wow.

We first contacted Mt. Tabor Construction about a year ago because we had a laundry list of handyman tasks to be handled. Rob came out and took care of everything on our list...moving bathroom mirrors and light fixtures around, interior painting, minor plumbing and electrical repair, and a bunch of other things I've since forgotten. We were quite pleased with the handyman work, so we hired them to do our garage conversion. Mt. Tabor Construction is a small operation - we got a lot of personal attention and were able to be very involved in the entire process from start to finish. Rob was very hands-on in dealing with all aspects of the job. He is definitely not the sort of contractor who bids a job, subcontracts everything out, and then comes back at the end looking for a check. This was great for us because it was our first time embarking on such a large project and we had plenty of questions along the way. Rob was always ready to suggest ways we could save money on the job and gave us good advice on which aspects of the project were worth spending extra money on, and which would be served equally well by pursuing a less expensive route. If you're going to be working with someone for months on a project, it's important to have a good working relationship. Rob was always friendly, personable, and helpful. He was great with our 4-year old son (who was often troubled by the sounds of power tools) and bonded exceptionally well with our dog (who loved all the attention!). The various subcontractors that were brought in were all professional, friendly, and performed quality work - no "shady" types who make you wonder if they're casing the joint while they're working. We had no qualms about leaving a house key with Rob, and no worries about any of our possessions "walking off" when we weren't home. The end result is absolutely stunning, and the attention to detail they put into the project really shows. We'll be sure to call Mt. Tabor Construction for our next project.
Description of Work: Converted our 500 sq. ft. detached garage into a fantastic guest house/accessory dwelling unit. They literally did everything necessary to turn a dilapidated shell of a structure into a showplace. They also performed various handyman-type tasks around the house.

Rob and his crew did a fantastic job rebuilding our shower, and minor plumbling fixes. Really easy to work with. Finished the job ahead of schedule. The tile work for the shower walls and pan look great.
Description of Work: A shower stall in one of our bathrooms had been leaking water into the basement for several years. The shower stall was completely demo-ed and redone with the Wedi shower system. Re-tiled and new shower door installed.

Both projects done at different times went very smooth. He arrived when he said, and made daily arrangements to keep things as clean as possible. Also cleaned every night before he left! The bathroom remodel went great, and we where never without the use of our facilities by the time he cleaned up to leave. He made sure to keep us informed of any changes that might need to take place, and of possible future problems he noticed. Our bathroom turned out great and we love it. The screened in porch is a beautiful addition to our house, and gives us another space to enjoy our front yard. Rob started the project when he said, and he was completed in just a few days. The porch helps our house stand out in the neighborhood and we love it! Both Rob and his wife Alex where very nice and awesome animal lovers! Our needy cat Miles can attest to that, he gave them 5 paws!! We would definitely use them again.
Description of Work: A bathroom remodel, and a screened in front porch.
It was a delight working with Rob. Rob arrived punctually each morning to do the work. His work is exacting. He takes great delight in doing excellent work, He became a part of our family including our dog who waited patiently for him to arrive each morning. He explained what he was going to do before he began that phase of the project. When there were some surprises like a pipe in the wall that we didn't know was there, he quickly developed a new approach to the project. He began the project on the day he said he would and completed it on schedule. He told us in advance that he would be away on family business in the middle of the project. There were no surprises in Rob's work. We were greatly appreciative of his excellent work.
Description of Work: Installed a new medicine chest, light fixture, exhaust fan and vent, toilet, towel bars and vinyl flooring. Removed old vanity top and prepared it for the installation of a new tile vanity top. Took away old vinyl, vanity top, toilet and medicine chest. He oversaw the installation of the new tile vanity top.

I spent $250. It was easy for me to get an appointment considering the lateness of the time that I called. He had other things that he had to do and because I called fairly late I understood that I would have to wait a bit. He arrived on time for the appointment and he was courteous and professional. I was very impressed with the way he explained things and my daughter was the one who put the toilet in a few years ago so they had a good discussion about what he was doing and I appreciated the fact that he thoroughly informed us about what he was doing.

He's terrific at playing Sherlock Holmes, taking in all the information about the old house and its funky wiring, and doing the right tests to narrow down the possible problems. He was able to show up within a couple days of my phone call, arrived on the dot of the appointed time, and solved the problem in less than 2 hours. He obviously loves old houses and neighborhoods and enjoys the challenge of solving problems. (My cats and Rob were buddies within minutes of his arrival. He's obviously an animal lover.)

All of the work was performed well, especially the work of the built-in dishwasher space.
Description of Work: The biggest project Rob did was enlarging the space for a built-in dishwasher. It was a tricky job that required precision work. He also did a variety of other smaller jobs.
I live in an old house, with an upstairs bathroom that was added sometime in the 70's. It was drafty, leaky and inefficient. I had an idea how to correct that and Rob from Mt. Tabor Construction was the perfect guy to make it happen. He listened to what I wanted and made it happen. He removed a pocket door, stabilized the wall, covered it up, and you would never know there had been a door in that location. There was an on going, small leak in the shower . Fixing it required cutting a hole in the ceiling of the bath below. Thank goodness there was no hidden water damage! Once again, leak gone and no telltale sign. I also wanted Rob to downsize an in-wall bookcase. That's when it was discovered there was a lot of caulk missing along the sides of my fireplace chimney. Rob re-caulked both sides from the outside, working around the power line coming into my house. Draft gone! Looking around outside I noticed some water damage along the edge of my roof. Rob was able to fix that, even though it wasn't part of the original contract. Rob was great to work with! I was very comfortable having him in my home. He has many skill sets, so he was able to do widely varying jobs, and do them well. What was a marginal part of my house is now functional and warm, and secure from the weather. I would definitely hire Mt. Tabor Construction again!
Description of Work: Remodeled an entrance, repaired a leak, cured a drafty situation, and improved drainage. Cost of service also included all necessary materials.

From start to finish Rob was very responsive and punctual. He was consistently on time and if he was running late he would call and let me know. Example: He called to let me me know that he would be 15 minutes late and this happened maybe 2 times. He always kept me informed and educated about the process. I always knew what was happening and when it would happen. Rob is an excellent craftsman. He is very skilled and has high standards. He does not suffer fools, in other words, he expects high standards in others. His history includes master shipbuilder of yachts and sailboats. He is a verbal guy, educated and has traveled the world with wonderful stories. I am extremely pleased with my new elegant bathroom. Since my circa 1927 bathroom had basically never been remodeled, there were a few surprises along the way. Rob did not think the lath and plaster need to be completely removed and afterwards wished that he had included that in his original bid. When he went to install the ceiling fan vent, he encountered a solid wood block between the ceiling joists. This required a great deal of effort to remove and a partial removal of the lath and plaster ceiling. He was able to seamlessly patch the ceiling with sheet rock, not an easy task. There were several adjustments and changes along the way. Rob always listened to my ideas. If he wasn't sure it could work, he would think about it rather than just say no it can't be done. Most of the time he made it work. His finished work was the best. The original woodwork on the cabinets that were not removed look new. The plumbing and tile work were subcontracted. They were both excellent and I am extremely pleased with their work. It is clear that Rob has used them almost exclusively and knows their work is up to his high standards. Rob does have a counter top provider but I was very particular about the look I wanted for my counter tops. In the end I used a provider that had the marble look in quartz that I loved in stock. It was a new design, so of course it was more expensive. I also found my own shower glass installer and Rob liked them so much he plans to use them in the future. Rob is a happy guy with a strong personality. He has a strong work ethic and gets the job done. His wife helps him out as a go-fer and even a heavy lifter. They work as a team. I would definitely use Rob in the future.
Description of Work: Bathroom Remodel. Removed cast iron tub, pedestal sink and original floor tile. Refurbished/restored original cabinets and mirror. Replaced old lath and plaster sections with new sheet rock. Installed new vanity, fan, lights and electrical outlets. Painted walls, ceiling and trim. Performed all necessary prep work needed for installers. Coordinated and worked with plumber, shower glass, counter top and tile installers at every step. The cost of service represents all work including subcontractor work and all fixtures for my 6.5 x 9 ft bathroom.

MTC did a great job! They worked with my plans to reuse building materials as possible. They were very aware of timing of the project and took steps to ensure that we were not too inconvenienced. Well as much as you can be when you don't have a kitchen! They took a great deal of time to make sure everything was done properly. Did I mention they vacuumed and cleaned up well every night they finished? Plus they were very conscientious of my pets which I loved. My kitchen looks like one that would cost twice as much! Great quality for the price!
Description of Work: MTC remodeled my kitchen. They demo'd the old floor after removing my existing cabinets and base boards (that I wanted to reuse), they worked with in conjunction with the countertop and floor installation, added additional lighting, installed appliances and then put it all back together.

In the past year Rob has done many jobs for me. Last fall he replaced the vent/fan in our master bathroom. This consisted of crawling into the smallest attic crawl space on a wet and cold day for six hours in order to make sure that the fan was properly wired and vented correctly to the outside. This spring I hired him to close off some parts of our basement, so that our cat couldn't gain access to some dangerous crawlspaces. Rob took the time to come up with a custom solution so that our cat would be safe, he also took the time to help me balance my front loading washing machine so that it wouldn't dance across my basement floor anymore. Finally, last week Rob and his wife Alex came over and installed my Little Free Library in my front yard. He made sure that is was installed correctly and then gave me some advice on how to maintain it, he and Alex also donated some of the supplies. Which was awesome. Thank-you.

Rob and Alex met with us about two weeks in advance of our remodel start date. After our initial meeting, Rob thoroughly researched all of the components we selected. He came back to us with a full understanding of any special install recommendations, pricing and availability for timely delivery as well. Thankfully, his research caused us to select a different and more substantial bathtub that we are very happy with. Rob accommodated my special (and potentially quirky) request to have a seamless transition between flooring types. Because we don't wear shoes in our home, we truly appreciate comfort beneath our bare feet! The flooring transition is seamless, comfortable, and beautiful. We agree with other reviewer comments about the level of perfectionism and attention to detail. What we really appreciated in addition, was the care and respect Rob and Alex had for our home. Freshly laundered tarps were used each day. Custom plywood and / or cardboard covered all other flooring surfaces against damage. Our home was cleaner each night than when they started work each day. Rob and Alex work on only one project at a time. This means that they can devote 110 percent focus to your project.

I called Rob just before 6:00 on a Friday evening. I expected to get his voicemail but he answered within 2 rings. We are in the process of selling our home and need to make a few repairs. We weren't happy the contractor suggested by our realtor, so with just a week left to get the repairs done I got on the phone. Rob was my first call, and even though he is unable to get the work done in this short timeframe, I would definitely call him again. He is courteous, professional, and was genuinely sympathetic to our situation. It's easy to see why he has so many excellent reviews!
Description of Work: Spoke to Rob about doing some repairs to our home
We called Rob again, after a previous, smaller job he did for us several months ago. As before, Rob's has, once again, been meticulous. He is willing to do anything. His punctuality and work ethic are wonderful. His manner is forthright, creative and detailed, if somewhat outspoken and bold. We plan to ask Rob to do more projects and expect him to always deal with us honestly and to continue to do superb work.
Description of Work: We had Rob perform all kinds of work over a three-month time. Work included big as well as smaller jobs: * Removed and repositioned insulation, installed flooring, fixed a problem with condensation in attic * Performed plumbing: Removed and replaced toilet, removed and replaced kitchen faucet, water dispenser and garbage disposal * Removed and replaced ceiling fans, faulty outside lighting, lights * Performed miscellaneous outside work: Patched and painted siding, replaced and repaired hose bibs, secured gate hinges * Prepared and painted two rooms, included moving furniture * Removed and transported three raised garden tub/planters including one-and-half tons of soil * meticulously cleaned up after each project

I had some plumbing work done in the bathroom and kitchen and the plumbers did not replace the walls they tore out. I called Rob in to replace them. This sounds simple enough but Rob had to get creative working in tight spaces. He encountered some unforeseen problems as well but stayed late until the job was done. I'm totally satisfied with Rob's work and will most likely have him come back for some other projects.

They (Husband and Wife team) arrived on time. They were pleasant and he is most definately a perfectionist, which is good. But, he was slow. Didn't finish the job on time. Had to return the next day. I understand that things don't always go as planned, but some of his reactions and comments were less than professional. I will not use him again. Honestly, I just wanted him gone. When discussing the bill, he informed me that it wasn't just his time, but his wifes time as well. I hired a handyman, not a team. I believe I overpaid, but again, just wanted him gone.

Response from Mt. Tabor Construction
The work was done on August 24th and 25th, not September 12th as stated in your review. The project was to remove an oversized, very heavy front door (hence the need for an extra person) and replace it with an equally heavy, badly weathered and barely functioning door that you assured me would fit. It did not. Once the existing door was removed, I discovered that the hinge side jambs had been “modified” and mortised so many times, that the entire side would need to be rebuilt. When I brought this to your attention, I was surprised that you already knew about the damage, which had been caused by your previous tenant. Compound this with an hour spent returning the wrong hinges that you bought, and another hour spent trying to install door glass that would not fit because you did not measure the frame correctly, then I might see how you thought I was slow. Since I could not finish the job until the new glass was ready, your payment included work that was not yet completed but that we agreed would be scheduled on Monday, August 27th. Phone records show that I called you twice on Monday August 27th at both home and work, also on Wednesday August 29 th, and again on September 6 th, each time leaving a message stating that I needed to finish the door or do other work in exchange for the time owed. I called you for the sole purpose of finishing what you paid me for or to at least allow you to use that time for something else. It is highly unlikely that you did not receive any of my calls. I find it disappointing that rather than answer one of my four phone calls, you chose to wait six months and then use Angie’s List as your means of response. At the very least, please call me and tell me how much you think you were overcharged and I will gladly send you a check. Our reviews demonstrate that Mt. Tabor Construction has achieved and maintained a superior service rating. Our reputation is far more valuable that any money that you paid me. Communication is everything. If only I had known how you felt. Rob Willis - Mt. Tabor Construction
