Michael Hoffar Woodworks

My wife is thrilled. The madrone island countertop is beautiful and everyone has to touch it. Michael is a very skilled woodworker and tells stories of training as a furniture maker in Germany, it shows in the detail of his work. We had an Ikea budget but our builder thought that might be less expensive overall to have custom cabinets made because they are easier and faster to install. Our architect drew up the dimensions and design and while that may have cost more, the design and proportions are stunning. My wife has already overloaded the drawers and they can handle it. Michael used details like blind dovetail joints to increase the strength of the sliding drawers. Michael came out and installed them with great care, and then he came back a month later after they were painted to check the fit. On reflection, I think the decision to have custom cabinetry was a good one. Our house was built in 1920 and has settled so one side of the kitchen is 1/2 inch lower, it could have been a nightmare to make it look right. Our house is in a historic district of Portland so we can't make any changes to the exterior so all changes to the inside have to fit the old proportions. It was a pleasure to work with Michael and if I could afford it, I would love to have him make some furniture for our old house.
