I let them go as they didn't show up for three weeks. He came gave me the estimate and he was very professional and reasonable. I thought it was going to be a good match for the season. They came and did the spring cleaning and did an okay job because they didn't complete it. They came back and mowed the lawn and didn't complete the job. They were supposed to come two weeks later to do the up keep but they didn't show up so I let them go.
Description of Work: I used the service of Larson Lawn four weeks ago for some lawn work and mowing.
We use this company about twice a year for yard clean-up and maintenance. Marty Larson and Larson Lawns respond quickly and professionally, always stick to the estimate, and are always friendly and easy to work with. I especially appreciated how well Marty explained the benefits and downsides of different options, which really helped us make the right choices for our yard. Marty never pushes additional services and always seems genuinely interested in reaching our desired result.

They don?t communicate with us as well as we would like, but they keep the place looking pretty neat. They are doing OK. The price is fine.

I used the Angies List e-mail option on Saturday, but didn't get a return e-mail until Monday evening. In the meantime I telephoned Monday and made an appointment at 8:30am to meet with Marty. I was hoping for an appointment later in the day as I take medication that requires me to get lots of sleep, but Marty said that it would need to be 8:30. Marty arrived on time to tell me that I was too far out of his area so it wouldn't be worth even giving an estimate. I do wish he had checked out my address at some point, so that it wouldn't waste his time or mine. He seemed nice enough though. I can't really speak to anything else about him or his work.

Being quite new to lawn and associated maintenance in general, I was quite appreciative of the fact that Marty walked me through the various options and provided a la carte pricing. I was quite satisfied with the work both times and would be happy to hire Larson Lawns again!
Description of Work: I've hired Larson Lawns on two occasions although this is the first post. First time they did some yard work at the house we just purchased. When I called, the owner (Marty Larson) was able to schedule an inspection next day to provide an estimate. Work was done promptly afterwards. The second was for some additional follow-up work and Larson Lawns was able to complete the work after a couple of weeks due to backlog. The one hang-up the second time around was the one or two days delay in getting back to me. The first time around when I called I got Marty right away. The second time I left a v-mail. However, it's probably due to the backlog. Work they performed on the two occasions include rototilling, aerating (though that was sub-contracted out and there was a bit of billing confusion), pruning some shrubs, and applying seeds, lime, compost, etc. Additionally they planted a couple of trees.

They came right away to do the clean up. They were coming every other week for about 3 months to mow the lawn. I never knew when they were going to come, and it seemed like it was different everytime. The price was okay for the most part, but the price to trim hedges was way too high. The billing was always inaccurate, and every month I had to point out an error in the bill.

It is hard to know what each different client wants. Most of my clients don't water their lawns and are glad when my crew takes the initiative and doesn't cut the lawn when it doesn't need cutting in the summer (as in this case) or winter. The member was right, we made a mistake on the bill once and corrected it. The next time she complained about a charge, I explained the misunderstanding she had. I canceled charges for her several times to try please her, but terminated our services after three months because we couldn't please her.

This company is great for year-end cleanup. They did some major hauling and plant removal and spent a long time on our yard. I will say that the team is not that detail oriented, and if you want a clean finish I would perhaps finish with another company. It is helpful to be present when they are doing the work to make sure that they do all of the areas agreed upon. For the work that they did, they are a great price. We had to hire another company to grind the stump of our tree, but they did a good job of cutting it down and removing it. I will definitely use them again if I have another seasonal cleaning job that needs to take place.
Description of Work: They did some major brush clearing, mowing, and hard edge. They also removed a large bushy hazelnut tree, but did not grind the stump.

They ended up charging more then the estimate. They killed my whole front yard and I called them to tell them the owner needed to come out. I bought the products that would fix what they caused. I told the owner, Marty, I needed one of his workers to do use my products to fix my yard. The man that came out didn't know what Marty & I had talked about and so his 'fix it' was just to cut really close with a weed eater. I then called Marty back and he told me this is what we agreed to and that he was done. I offered to buy sod for them to replace the area and he said they already did all they were going to do and were done. Now I'm left with a mess.

When I bid the work at the members (I only talked with the wife) house we talked about a lot of things. I submitted a bid for $500 for the items on the bid and she agreed to it. After 2 of my men completed the work (They have worked with me for over 8 years each), she called a week later and said that they hadn't completed the work, some trash needed to be picked up (she lives next to an commercial area), rake along a fence, they had missed spraying some broadleaf. I sent them back out to do the items she mentioned, some of which we had talked about but were not on the bid. She called me back out saying that my guys had accidentally killed some of her lawn. That was hard to believe, but I went back out and met with her again. My notes on July 12 says the area of grass that was dead had been sprayed in a straight line -- it wasn't accidentally sprayed, it had been done purposefully. It was strips of grass between cobble stones that was broadleaf infested and partially dead. In trying to appease her, though it wasn't our error, I said we would take the dead grass out from between the rocks, spray broadleaf or take out the weeds under a picket fence that was laying on the ground and by the front corner of the house, but we would not replace the lawn for her. She agreed to my terms. My guys went back the third time, did what was asked, made sure everything was good and left. On 7/17 she called and asked when I was going to finish the work, and I replied that we were finished, that Phillip had come and completed the work we agreed to, that she could hire someone else to put in sod, that my efforts to please went above what I said I'd do, and that I was pleased with the work that had been done.

I researched lawn services on Angies List. Contacted Larsons Lawns over the internet. I got an immediate response and estimate of $35 per lawn cut for the house. Great price for a property that is a little hard to get to and tough to mow on a hill. They have been mowing the yard for 5 months now. Every month I get a billing statement. Everything is great. Easy to work with.

Of all the contractors, landscapers are one of the more difficult to reach (especially after payment has been made.) One reason is that they are doing the actual work, thus unavailable to answer calls during the day. Marty was quick to return my initial phone call, but he couldn't survey my yard immediately as he was leaving for vacation. However, rather than have me wait until his return and have problems get any worse, he provided some free short term advice, which was very classy. It was basic enough for the layperson homeowner like me. A business owner with a long-term customer minded focus will always reap the rewards. Therefore, although I?m not going to do use Larson Lawns for basic fertilization ? thereby taking short-term money out of Marty?s pocket ? I will strongly consider him for larger projects. More importantly, I would recommend him to anyone seeking a landscaper. Word of mouth baby!

We have used Larson Lawns for about the last three years in spring and fall. They are punctual and never go above the price they quoted. They do excellent work from trimming, pruning, leaf removal, branch removal, pressure washing, gutters, etc., and are very fast. The haul away all of the debris. We live in SW Portland so there are a lot of trees on our property. They have never overcharged and do more than expected. I recommend them highly.

The initial contact was in early April. I explained to Marty that I wanted his expertise on determining what needed to be done to the lawns. I suggested aerating, fertilizing, and over seeding, but left it open for his recommendations. The weeding and trimming were completely relatively soon, however it took months before the lawns were done. Also, while the weeding was done quickly, it became clear a few weeks later that it wasn't done well. The weeded area looked like nothing had been done, making it obvious they didn't get the roots. But the most annoying part was how long it took to get the lawns done and how poorly the work was done. On top of that, Marty was not very responsive and clearly didn't follow up with the subcontractors he used. Weeks would go by and nothing would happen, and I would call and wait for a response. When I finally did hear from him, it was clear he had no idea what had and hadn't been done. Each step took weeks of waiting and phone calls before something was done. Eventually, the aerating was done, then something was put on the lawn -- I assume it was fertilizer -- then seed just tossed on top. No preparing the bare areas, no mulch, nothing. He didn't even tell me what day it was happening so that I could begin the new watering schedule. This was in June, more than 2 months after we initially made arrangements. I had to cover the lawns with peat moss myself, but it was hot and by the time I was able to do it, it was too late. So I had to reseed and fertilize it myself. In addition, he did a poor job of tracking what had been agreed to, what had been done and what the charges were. They kept changing and he tried to charge me twice for the seeding. This was a major headache and a waste of time and money. It's hard to understand how he got such good reviews.
Description of Work: Based on Angie's List reviews, we contacted Larson Lawns to do some spring preparation on our lawns, as well as some weeding and trimming. The latter were done as expected. The lawns were mowed and some lawn prep was done, but it was inadequate and very late.

I hired Marty to do monthly maintenance after finding him on Angie's List and reading glowing recommendations. The first year went reasonably well, although he was inconsistent in scheduling, and I had to do most of the work myself. Sometimes he'd come on the 24th of one month and the 5th of the next, which meant the yard was maintained 2 weeks in a row and then not at all for 4. I discussed that with him, and ultimately moved to have him come every other week and to include mowing in the service. This is where things fell apart completely. He missed an entire month in the heaviest growing season (June). He didn't respond to phone calls or emails. My wife was extremely ill at this time, and I didn't have any time to find someone else, much less do the job myself. The yard literally looked like the house was abandoned. I fired Marty, and out of desperation ended up hiring someone blindly out of the newpaper. Miraculously, they turned out to be fantastic. Even so, my yard will never recover from that 5 weeks of neglect.
