Description of Work: March 2013, We closed on a home just under 27,000sqft and needed to move in within a month, i started getting quotes/bids from everyone since the entire interior needed to be painted, we were in a time crunch to get painting scheduled and finished before carpet and flooring. During my exhausted state, i talked to PDX Property Group (my rockstar realty co.) and Sherpard Painting was recommended to me via my realtor, whom I know well and trust. Thus, it was a no brainer to allow his recommedation to present a compariable bid. Although the bid was a bit out of my projected budget i decided to go with them because the Owner, Justin Shepard contacts you himself and always answers his cell phone, returns calls after hours and on weekends. and each time I had a question, he had or found the answer. As a contractor, Justin worked closely with his team of painters, often checking up on their work and calling me with any questions. i made lots of last minute changes and adjustmentsand Justin and his team rolled with the punches. Pros: 1) Very little to no clean up. The painter's were fast and efficient 2) Completed job within the specified time constraint 3) Competitive pricing 4) great design ideas and detailed with trim (our home has lots of windows and compact rooms, drastic angles and a dramatic lighting hillside but they made the paint choices look great in the suggested matte and room transitions 5) Attentive owner, professional painters Cons: 1) Contractor paint version of my selected colors from Sherwin Williams are made seperately and with "lower quality", so reordering for touch-up proved to be a pain.

All went well. Justin gave us a thorough step-by-step painting plan and communicated with us each day on progress, issues, etc. He was also on site to inspect the work and manage his crew on a daily basis. He guarantees his work and without asking, has inspected the quality of the paint on several occassions, repainting areas that needed follow up attention.
Description of Work: We have a 1906 craftsman home listed on the Historic Register that needed great attention. We wanted to highlight the architectural details and chose 7 different colors to bring the house back to life. It was pain-staking work and Shepard Painting did an outstanding job on a somewhat difficult project. Their carpentary division designed and rebuilt a custom porch railing to match the original design based on a postcard of the house from 1910. The finished result exceeded our expectations and added wonderful character to the house as well as increased value. Their work was profiled in a cover story in the Oregonian's Home and Gardens section.

BUYER BEWARE! I was very impressed with Justin Shepard when I first met him. He seemed like a nice guy and convincing salesman. His prices were in the middle of the range of quotes I got to repaint the exterior of my house. I chose Shepard because we seemed to have good communication. The painting process was an utter disaster. His crew power-washed my house when some windows were open. They painted some windows shut, then broke the ropes on the windows while slamming them open and shut to break up the paint. Paint failure began within a year in various places. The crew painted the south wall of the house so thickly that there are large chunks hanging off 5 years later. They painted the front door in a hurry in full sun, so that it bubbled and looks terrible. Justin Shepard and I emailed for a few summers in a row about his crew coming back to fix various paint problems, including the poorly painted deck. He agreed to do the work but never followed through. I eventually filed a complaint with the CCB, only to learn that Shepard had put me off for so long that his work was out of warranty. He also claims that his company repainted my porch twice. They never repainted. I invited him to come by to assess the thickness of the paint so he could see that the work still needed to be done. He never did. Beware of this highly unprofessional company. They are better at bidding projects that doing solid work.

Dear Angie's List Readers, Please notice the year that the customer listed. 2005. 5 Years ago. Our contract was very clear that we did not warranty the porch on this project. The warranty on this house project was for 2 years. Despite the fact that we do not warranty certain porches in their last stages of life (like this one) we returned during the 2 year period and repainted the porch 3 times as a show of goodwill toward the customer. 4 years later and way out of the contracted period this customer demanded more work to be performed. The requested work was not reasonable nor within the terms of the signed contract so we declined. Shepard Painting has an excellent track record painting thousands of homes, lawyers offices, restaurants, historical buildings, businesses large and small. for the past 18 years. Our success comes from providing a clear contract and performing excellent work within the terms of the agreement. The other component are reasonable customers that understand everyone's responsibility. Shepard Painting went above and beyond with this customer and we are sorry that she is so displeased.

The job took 5 days during the week. The men showed up on time. The were very careful and detailed. They did not damage any of my plantings and did not splatter paint anywhere (windows, walks, driveway, etc.). They spent about 3 days washing, taping, and preparing for painting and two days actually painting. I was fairly picky in that I wanted them to paint the bottoms of my vertical siding, omit painting certain electrical and cable boxes on the side of the house, etc. They were great - they listened to my requests and did them. I did not notice it, but my original paint job had one exterior door painted inconsistently with the other doors. I had told Shepard to paint exactly as the original color was done. After they had done this (exactly as I had asked), I noted the inconsistency and asked them to repaint the door - they happily did this at no charge. Overall I was delighted with their work and will definitely use them again when I needed painting done.
Description of Work: I had the exterior of my 4000sf, three level home painted. The paint on the house was in very good condition so there was very little repair work needed. I requested that they use the Sherwin Williams Duration paint which is rated by many as the best paint available. It has a lifetime warranty from the manufacturer and costs a bit more than other paints. I got three bids - $7900, $8500, and $9500. Shepard was the middle bid, but the reviews on Angie's List were so great that I decided to spend the extra $600 - I am very pleased that I did.

They were very responsive and the price was good. At the end of the job, their punch list was a little weak; they didn?t come back to take care of the small things. It wasn?t enough to hound them over but it still bothers me. They did a good job until the details at the end of the job. I'd totally hire them again.

Amazing, impeccable work. Precise to the smallest detail, creative with difficult spots (gas meter, downspouts, etc.). On time and clean work manners. HUGE plus: included in price is a color consultation with CJ Hurley Century Arts, a design company specializing in historic Portland homes. The recommended four-color scheme looks shockingly great, really. Lots of people ask me who the heck did this great job.
Description of Work: Complete exterior paint job with primer and two coats on stripped two-story, cap-code style single-family house, including concrete patio and garage doors. Paint job included CJ Hurley Century Arts color scheme recommendation.

They did an excellent job. They had come highly recommended from neighbors whose paint job we admired. From the initial meeting, Justin, the owner was our point person and he was extremely knowlegeable and responsive throughout the process, not just in making the initial pitch. Even after the job he made sure that all last touchups were done to our satisfaction. His crew was prompt every morning, pleasant, willingly did anything we asked, from shifting cars in the driveway so we could all park, to sweeping up each day. We have a koi pond and they took great care to tent this so that no debris or paint spray would reach the fish. When there were any questions, they asked to make sure they were doing exactly what we wanted (complicated paint color scheme for example). Justin provided 2 hours initially of consultation with a colorist that was included in his bid. Throughout the process, he and his crew were professional, hard working, responsive and did excellent work. Terrific!
Description of Work: There was some paint prep work done to strip the exterior in particularly bad patches prior to Shepard coming in to paint. Then, over about 4 weeks, they painted the entire exterior of our house which was a very complicated job. It's an old Queen Ann Victorian with 4 stories, on the National Register of Historic Places, and we used 5 different colors in different parts of the wood siding and trim. They spent a long time getting all the prep just right so then the actual painting went easily. They also helped arrange for window cleaning at the end of the job.

This is the SECOND phase of work. This company is EXCELLENT! Levi worked with me as if the house were his own! He has spent almost 2 hours with me going through things each time he was at my house. They are superb craftsman and get the job done in a very timely fashion. I guess the thing that impressed me most was how NEAT they kept everything. They moved things from my closets and lined them up on the bed in the exact same way they took them out. They also took out FINE CHINA from a wall unit they were working on without breaking a piece. These big construction guys were so careful with all my stuff. And, they kept a very neat workplace. You need to hire this company today. They can do it all, anything you need. Be sure to ask for Levi. He will listen to your dreams and help fulfill them!

Very frustrating.
Description of Work: This has been such a frustrating experience. Over a month ago we asked Shepard for an estimate. They were recommended by our paint stripping company. We know they came to the house as they left an advertisement on our front doorstep. When we didn't get an estimate we contacted them. They didn't call us back. Several phone calls later they called us to verify our e-mail address. Still no estimate arrived. We called them several times over the next few weeks, to no avail. Now, four weeks later we call them again. They tell us they sent the e-mail several times. I give them two more e-mail addresses to try and nothing! No estimate has arrived. We don't think they are even sending them. I do not know why they are wasting our time so much. Either that or they simply have a horrible clerical staff that cannot send attachments via e-mail. Plus, they don't seem too terribly concerned about actually sending the estimate in the mail. We finally have given up!

Because of the amount of demand for our work we could not assist them for a couple weeks. Once we did finally get to inspect the home we had an in depth over the phone conversation regarding what needed to be done to achieve a lasting job and actually gave him a price over the phone. He thought that the we were too expensive and of course that is fine, but explained that what we described was required for us to be able to give them a warranty. He asked for the proposal to be emailed to him. We did, but apparently mistyped the email address. A time later we received a frustrated email to which we responded immediately with the attachment that was sent earlier. Based on the next response from the potential client, Shepard Painting made the decision that we had no interest in dealing with this person on this project. I will leave it there. Just as much as our clients choose us, we choose our customers.

Justin and his assitant Shane came out to meet with us. Both were extremely professional and not only listened to our needs but also offered their own suggestions as to what was needed to properly complete our project. The work began with a crew of about 4 and it went well. Each night, the work areas were cleaned up, swept clean of debris and items were not left lying around. They paid attention to detail and the job was perfectly completed. We also used Shepard Carpentry to rebuild several pergolas on our property and this was also done with the utmost care and attention. In the end, after it all was finished, we had some minor concerns/touch-ups and Justin immediately sent his crew back out to make sure that the job was done to our satisfaction. He was good to his word when he said that customer service is his top priority. I would highly recommend them to anyone needing exterior or interior painting done. They are the epitome of excellent workmanship and top customer service.
Description of Work: We had Shepard Painting paint the exterior of our home which included the main house, a separate garage, and a pool house. The structures were overdue for painting and needed a great deal of prep work done prior to being able to be painted.

Our house was in poor condition not having been painted for 10+ years. We were pleased with the services for the following reasons: (1) the Company's quick response to our initial call; (2) Mr. Shepard visited our house and gave us both a detailed estimate and contract; (3) numerous references came with the estimate, with addresses to view company's work; (4) their color consultant made good color-palate suggestions for the style of our house and the character of the neighborhood; (5) Mr. Shepard or his foreman visited our house every day during all phases of the job; (6) the painting crew leader was knowledgeable, attentive, in control of the painting crew, and responsive to our many questions; (7) young crew members were diligent, thorough, and friendly; (8) the crew prepared the house surface until we were satisfied with the results; (9) the paint job is smooth and attractive; and (10) the company contracts to repair paint failure during the first two years following the job.
Description of Work: Contracted with Shepard Painting Company in 2006 to paint exterior of our 1928 house. Contract included discount because we signed early in the year. Contract included color consultant, all prep work, including extensive scraping, washing down of exterior walls, patching, repairing dry rot on one or two window sills, painting foundation, trim, and walls of house, three sides of our garage (South side could not be done because of extensive foliage in August), and the North side of neighbor's garage that faces our yard. Company to return in early Spring 2007 to paint South side of our garage ($200 extra) and repair several paint blisters on North side of house and on garage (no charge; these may have developed during heavy November 2006 rains).
Justin Shepard and his crew of professional painters and carpenters performed exceptionally well. We appreciated Justin's friendly, hands-on approach to all aspects of our difficult project. He took a keen personal interest in the progress of the work and in our feelings about it from the time of his first visit to estimate costs until his final inspection of the finished job. Justin is clearly a perfectionist who gets a great deal of satisfaction from a job well done. His high standards carry over to his crews; foremen, painters and carpenters were careful in their work and took pride in the part they played in the transformation of our house from rundown to restored. We are very happy with our choice of Shepard Painting. Justin was a pleasure to work with as were his amiable and capable employees. They did superb work at a reasonable price. We recommend Shepard Painting very highly.
Description of Work: The project was an interior restoration of a rundown 1922 house. The walls of seven rooms and a large hallway / stairwell were covered with many layers of wallpaper, much of which had been painted over. Removal of the wallpaper exposed damaged plaster that needed patching and/or skim coating. Sand-surfaced ceilings needed sanding, patching and skim coating. A wall-to-wall bookcase in the living room and a corner cabinet in the dining room required demolition and removal. New baseboard was required where these items had been located. Old ceiling moldings were removed and replaced with molding of our choice. Walls, ceilings, trim, kitchen cupboards and doors were painted in eight colors. Cupboard, closet and room doors were removed and beautifully spray painted in a temporary paint shop set up in our basement.

We liked Justin Shepard's business approach & the way he worked with us starting when he came to give us an estimate. His wasn't the cheapest nor the most expensive estimate we got. His even included a color consult designer. We decided to go with Shepard Painting because of Justin's knowledge & it was clear to us that he prides himself on customer service & satisfaction with workmanship & communication being key. His skilled crew assigned to our house actually exceeded our expectations. They were polite, neat, detailed, efficient & professional. Their honesty, integrity, & customer service ethic were wonderful & their workmanship was fantastic. We're so happy with the work Justin & team did. We thought the estimated cost was high to begin with but after watching the time & work of Justin's crew, we are now comfortable that they earned every penny. We gladly recommend Shepard Painting. We feel that our home was restored instead of just painted. And our neighbors like it!
Description of Work: Exterior prep (including power washing) and painting of our 1908 house and new shed using a 4 color scheme. After testing for and finding lead paint, they hand scraped and removed all loose and peeling paint to achieve a solid surface. They covered and protected ground and all plants. They covered vehicles in close proximity. They caulked as needed and replaced all missing window glaze and broken panes. They primed all prepped and bare wood before applying 2 coats of paint (sprayed and back brushed between coats). They cleaned up daily. Our house is very tall and old. During the hand scraping, our special paint crew identified wood that was rotten or very, very weathered. Jusin Shepard arranged a carpenter subcontractor to replace/repair the bad boards. This carpentry work was done under a separate contract and completed before Justin's crew began painting. Both painters and carpenters were very professional and good at what they do.

THE OWNER, JUSTIN SHEPARD, WAS A PLEASURE TO WORK WITH. HE IS VERY RESPONSIVE TO PHONE CALLS, AND EMAILS. HIS CREW DID THE WORK WHILE WE WERE ON VACATION, AND WE WERE SO DELIGHTED WITH THE OUTCOME. JUSTIN EXPLAINED HIS CONTRACT PARAGRAPH BY PARAGRAPH. CUSTOMER SERVICE IS PARAMOUNT WITH HIM, AND HIS CREW. THEY INSISTED ON DOING TOUCH UP WORK EVEN THOUGH IT WAS HARD TO FIND AREAS TO TOUCH UP. JUSTIN IS VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE ABOUT THE LATEST TYPES OF PAINTS, STAINS, AND RECOMMENDED A COMBINATION FOR OUR JOB. HE EVEN MAILED ME PAINT SAMPLES SO I COULD CHOOSE THE COLOR BECAUSE I DIDN'T HAVE THE TIME TO GET TO THE PAINT STORE. I WOULD NOT HESITATE TO HIRE THIS COMPANY AGAIN FOR AN INTERIOR OR EXTERIOR JOB.
Description of Work: PAINTED UNDER OUR LARGE DECK, THE RAIN GUTTERS, AND SUPPORT BEAMS. THE JOB REQUIRED A COMBINATION OF SPRAYING, BRUSHING, AND ROLLING. THE HOUSE, AND WINDOWS NEEDED TO BE PROTECTED FROM OVER SPRAY. TALL LADDERS WERE REQUIRED, AND THE DECK OVERHANG WAS OVER A BOULDER RETAINING WALL.
