Curt McKinny was the designer and oversaw the project. In hindsight we wish we had not compromised on some of our concerns. When he insisted, we tended to give in because we wanted to rely on his expertise. We were unsatisfied with the following:
1. Moved plants he shouldn't have and we didn't want moved.
- He insisted on transplanting a beautiful 8yr old red bark maple even though we were happy with where it was. It didn't survive.
- He also moved an established magnolia, but because they aren't responsible for it's survival, they didn't take care. It sat in a water filled hole for week with below freezing temperatures. It's still struggling after 2 seasons.
- He removed 4 of our Hinoki insisting that they weren't the right kind and installing 3 new ones. No difference. One of the Hinoki already died and was replaced. But we now have younger trees when the original were well established. Again they didn't take care in replanting the original Hinokis. They have been planted too close together and too close to a neighbor's lace leaf maple. Neighbors aren't happy.
2. Poor plant choices
- Curt recommended Hebes for a border plant. I told him we've tried them before but because we're at a higher elevation they didn't survive. He said he had a different variety that would be fine. Sure enough 14 of the 20 Hebes died last winter. Curt has refused to even call us back when we called him about them. We relied on his expertise again but were misled.
- Suggested 3 different ground covers. Corsican mint which has the best aroma when one walks near it is planted where no one walks. Second one is too aggressive. We have to now work to keep it from choking other plants and taking over paths. The third is nice, but too few planted so it's too sparse and hasn't spread.
- CEANTHOS 'JOYCE COULTER' looked great and did well through summer and fall, but all 3 died the first winter. Thought they may come back but didn't.
3 Poor quality/attention to detail
- A good part of our front lawn was removed to create beds and borders. They didn't spray/kill any of that lawn and left too much of their roots in the ground. We've had a very tough time pulling out grass growing throughout the new beds and through the plants.
- We use a riding mower. So we asked that they cut the lawn back from sloping areas. Didn't do it enough so it's still too steep and continues to be dangerous for the riding mower.
