We hired Enviromental Works to test the soil and water around an old heating oil tank that we had removed. The guys where friendly and helpful. The crews that came to take the samples where on time and friendly. So this kind of thing can be pretty stressful. Stressful. Because you don't really know how much things will cost you. The test can add up very quickly and you often wonder if it will ever stop. Our contact person was helpful and had a nice common sense approach to our project. Thank you for that. The only negative problem we had was a change in personnel. We started with one guy and finished with a different person. I think we lost some information along the way. Maybe there wasn't the best hand off with the new guy. For example we removed the tank and back filled the hole ourselves. But the new guy on a couple different times mentioned that they needed to back fill the hole. The other thing that happened was they miss read the test data. A units problem. Grams vs micro grams. This caused a bit of stress. Anyway it all worked out thankfully.

They did an expensive nice job. They were fine and we would use them again. The price was within what people charge for that kind of stuff.

When I bought the house, they gave me this statement saying the tank had been decommissioned. Now that I'm trying to sell the house, I find that's not true. The statement said there was no evidence of diesel in the tank, when in fact, the recent inspection stated that there was oil in the bottom, mixed with soil and the tank had not been decommissioned. Had I gotten the truth from Environmental Works, I might not be facing the problems I'm encountering now. I assumed, because of their and quot;statementand quot; that the tank was decommissioned, that the present day soil samples would be better. Because there WAS oil in the tank the recent tests are the same as the ones done 3 years ago. I can't very well go back to the seller and try to recoup my losses when it was Environmental Works who was responsible for reporting that the tank was decommission and there was no oil in the bottom. I do not trust this company and I don't think others should either.
Description of Work: They were actually hired by the seller of the house I bought. They charged $150 to do some soil samples and gave me a "Statement of Decommissioning" for the oil tank that was present on the property that i bought.

We hired Environmental Works for our initial sewer scope and oil tank soil tests while inspecting this home that we purchased. They did a great job with the scope, so we hired them to decommission our oil tank as well. They scheduled the service for May 29th at 8am. Call me naive, but this gave me the impression that the oil tank would be completed that day. The service men showed up on time, got to work, and seemed to do a great job with removing the old crud from the tank. I was terribly surprised to show up the next morning, and see that a giant hole had been left in our yard where the oil tank is. The hole was covered with a flimsy, half-rotting piece of plywood, and some orange plastic fencing was rigged up around it. I called Enviro Works, and was told that there was no way that they would finish an oil decommission in one day. They always needed to inspect the bottom of the tank for leaks, and they would do additional soil sampling around the bottom of the tank to verify that no leaking had taken place. There's always a delay between draining the tank, doing the tests, getting the test results, and then finishing the work. This was all news, and all a surprise to me. We had a lot of contractors and a lot of work going on at this house, and we were trying to manage them so they didn't trip over each other. I asked Enviro Works when we could finish the job, and he said that all his technicians were busy for the near future, and scheduled the completion for June 4th, almost a full week later and we're wondering if it would have been scheduled if we didn't insist it get done soon. This aspect could have been remedied with clear communication when we set up the initial appointment, explaining that the decommission would have to be a two-step process. It all could have been disastrous in the period before they came to finish the job. Roofers were on the site replacing our roof. Since they had to work around this gaping hole right next to the house, they took down the orange fence. When they were done, they just left the flimsy plywood. We were hanging out in the front yard considering all the work, when my toddler ran over to the plywood and stood on it. Luckily, it didn't collapse. Luckily, my son didn't fall into a ~6 foot cavern filled with toxic oil product. This was terrifying, and I was just really upset with the whole process. You could say that this was not solely Environmental Works' fault: that the roofers didn't put the plasticky fence back up. Regardless, I was upset with the whole cascade of events.

After testing with high radon levels, we contacted two companies in Portland for bids. One was Environmental Works. Both companies were very professional, responded promptly and seemed to thoroughly check out the problem. The bid from Environmental Works was several hundred dollars cheaper, so we decided to go with them. They promptly scheduled a date to do the mitigation. The young man who came to do the work was very personable, professional, and thoroughly explained what he was doing. The work was completed in one day and everything was cleaned up. We checked our radon level after the mitigation and it was well within acceptable limits. We were very pleased with this company and the service they provided. We would definitely recommend them to someone else.

Everyone was always on time. They did exactly what they said they would do. Joel provided the estimate, came by during the install and did some of it himself, Bob installed the sytem, Andy picked up the test monitor after the installation, and Stephanie was in the office. Every single one of these people were professional, prompt, helpful, responsive, and very nice. From time to time, I would talk to Bob while he was installing. He was always very kind and explained what he was doing. Joel was the same. A couple of days after the installation, I noticed water dripping from the fan. I called Joel and he came over as soon as I was available to meet him at home and he changed out the fan. Again, he arrived at the exact agreed upon time. My radon rating went from 26 and 15 to 0.4 after the installation. I did not have as much contact with the electrician, but he also seemed very nice. The fan is very quiet. The noise is no louder than the air moving through the pipe. They did a great job.

Everything went very well. Price was very reasonable and work done was excellent. Sure wish we had known about this company when we were soaked for nearly 12 thousand dollars by and quot;Jack Howk/Rescue Rooterand quot; at our own home, for the same amount of work that this company did for 1/10th of the price.
Description of Work: This company performed excellent and reasonable services by replacing a damaged sewer line at my mother's house. She recently died, and in the process of selling her home, an inspection revealed this work needed to be done. During the process, this company discovered a damaged water line, so they were able to line up another contractor to replace the water line for a reasonable price.

Thanks Customer! We pride ourselves on high quality services at a competitive price. With repair and replacement of underground utilities, or other excavation and soil cleanup projects there is always the potential for unforseen changes or unmarked private utilities. When we encounter a problem we find cost effective solutions and always bill changes at a fair rate. We appreciate the business and the compliments!!

They surveyed old underground oil tank for leaks, unfortunately they found a bad area, submitted samples to DEQ. Responded with report and did what needed to be done to decommission the oil tank. It was scary not knowing what they would find or how it would play out expense wise but I felt somewhat reassured in talking to them that it was not a bottomless pit and that I would not be throwing money into.
Description of Work: Showed up same day as I called within a hour, They did a preliminary search of contaminants, removed a 2 x 4-ft section of the tank top and lowered a tech into the abysis where he cut holes in the bottom of the tank at both ends where he retreived seperate sample from each end which they submitted to DEQ. Came back with in a few days and proceded to do a series of test holes (maybe 7) around the tank going 14-ft I believe below the ground surface finding clean dirt with any contaminants.

With our staff of technical science and construction based project managers we are able to navigate the DEQ regulations to find cost effective solutions to environmental cleanup projects. Depending on the levels of contamination, excavation and soil removal is not always needed to meet DEQ requirements. Thank you for choosing Environmental Works and allowing us to show you how important it is to work with a company that you can TRUST!

Everyone was friendly and knowledgeable. I had some trouble getting in contact with them a couple of times, and I had to ask them when we should expect someone to come do work. But the people that came to do the work were professional and good.
Description of Work: We had a new sewer line installed. Our old one ran through the neighbors yard, and we couldn't get an easement to fix. They jack hammered the concrete in the basement and ran the new line under the foundation and through the front of the house. Then dugout a trench in the front yard and connected the pipe to the mainline in the street.

We got bids from two other companies we also found on Angie's list. We went with Environmental Works initially because the initial bid (for simple decommissioning and testing) was lower. When contamination was found (due to leaks in the tank), we went back to the other two to get bids on the cleanup and/or testing. There are two options at this point: 1) risk-based analysis - determining the plume of contamination and testing air quality in soil and basement to see if harmful chemicals are present in the air, or 2) digging out contaminated soil until the contamination is not an issue. Environmental recommended digging and the others recommended the testing. Either way, the total cost was unknown because it depended on results of testing. The risk-based option would have been over $5,000 if the test showed acceptable levels, and the minimum cost for digging was about $3800. We went with the digging option, being optimistic that the initial soil removal would resolve the issues, and considering it an advantage to have contaminated soil removed. Unfortunately, after the removal of one dumpster full of soil, the tests showed areas with sill unacceptable levels, and a second dumpster was needed. Work was done on four different days over a couple of weeks, with our driveway unusable, since the tank had been partly under the driveway. Matthew at Environmental Works was good to work, explained things patiently, and generally kept me up-do-date on the status. The project ended up being more expensive than expected due to the leak/contamination and the heaviness of our soil.
Description of Work: Opening and cleaning of oil thank that we had stopped using in 2006. Take soil samples and submit for testing. After samples were found to have unacceptable levels of contaminants, removal of tank and 22 tons of soil. Back fill of hole.
