Mark and his crew were on time and continued on our house until it was completely finished. At times, there were between two and four painters here, depending on other jobs. At no time did they leave us during the entire process to work on other painting projects they had scheduled. The painters were always professional, clean and neat and always cleaned up after the day was done. The attention to detail from the masking process to painting the trim was impressive. For our front porch which is cedar, we had them clean and restain it with an oil base stain. For our back deck, we had them use a product called Sharkskin, which is a solid color stain. We did this after fighting to keep the cedar deck clean and stained in past years. This maintenance for me got to be a losing battle, thus we went with the solid color stain and it looks fantastic. For our house, we used three colors, one for the main body and two for the trim. We have had so many compliments since everything is finished now. We couldn't be happier.
Description of Work: We needed our house painted as well as our front porch refinished and re-stained and our cedar deck in the backyard refinished.

Very well; Mark is a professional with his work, estimates and timing. He was able to estimate everything on a timely basis and followed through with his work. I would highly recommend him and would gladly be a reference.
Description of Work: Mark provided painting and touch up services to get our home ready for sale. This included the kitchen cabinets, front door and walls.

Mark gave a competitive bid with a set price which is unusual when wall paper removal is involved. The crew of three always showed up at the scheduled time and were very conscientious about keeping the worksite tidy and did a good job leaving no trace of their presence when the job was completed. Overall, we were very pleased with the outcome. There were a few imperfections that we found after they left, particularly involving masking (which was extensive in a job like this). I spent less than an hour fixing up some baseboard/trim paint line issues which, although a little disappointing, acceptable given the retexturing and overall baseboard fit of the house. I'll take the little extra effort on my part vs. the extra cost that removing and reinstalling all the baseboards would have added to the project. I would definitely consider using Mark's crew in the future.
Description of Work: We had a large vaulted living room and adjoining dinning room with a total of six windows in a dated wallpaper that was part of the original construction nearly 30 years ago. Although the walls were properly prepared before the wallpaper went up, it was quite an effort to remove. Since it was part of the original construction, all the walls needed to be textured before painting. With priming after wallpaper removal and after texturing plus the two coats of finish paint and painting the vaulted ceiling, this was quit a job.

I selected Mark Powers Painting based on all the good reviews here on Angie's List and I really hoped to be as happy as his other customers, but we were not. Based on our experience, I'm really surprised by all the good reviews because we had all sorts of issues and I can't imagine we're unique. Normally we do our own interior house-painting, so I can assure you we have realistic expectations. (Perhaps the unhappy people are hesitant to be vocal?) I don't like leaving poor reviews for small businesses, but someone needs to say something and this company is in serious need of some constructive criticism. Hopefully future customers will benefit from me speaking up about their poor workmanship. It's not like this was a little plumbing job. We could have gone on our dream European vacation for what this job cost! The money we spent came from YEARS of saving and I didn't feel like these painters appreciated that. In other words, they didn't do for us the job I expect they would do on their own home. POSITIVES: 1. Punctual and came when they said they would come. 2. Mark (the owner) made an appearance at the job site everyday and checked in with me to let me know the progress. 3. The living room and entry walls came out well. If you look at the kitchen from far way, it looks good. (When I first walked in and saw my new white cabinets I was happy, but when I looked at everything close up the next day all the issues became apparent.) 4. They came back twice to take care of problems and areas that didn't get painted. This is a positive because they'd already been paid so I guess they could have not come back. 5. Owner and some of the painters were friendly and amiable. (One of painters on the first day was not.) NEGATIVES: 1. Didn't stick to schedule as promised....Mark specifically told me that painting the cabinets would be a 6-day job and the living room would take 2-3 days. We were very clear that we were on a very tight schedule because we had carpet and tile installers scheduled and a non-negotiable move-in date. Mark specifically said they would start the living room on Monday, so they would be cleared out well before the carpet guys came Friday. Tuesday night, Mark told us he was sending his guys to another job on Wednesday because of the good weather but said they'd still get everything done in time. I didn't argue because they still had one more day to get the living room done and he said they'd come over the weekend if they needed to in order to be finished with the kitchen by the following Monday (day 6). Well, guess what? They didn't finish the living room in 2-3 days and they weren't done on Friday when the carpet guys came to rip out all the carpet. They were practically tripping over each other. They also didn't come over the weekend to work on anything. When they came the following Monday to finish (they HAD to finish Monday because I had carpet and tile guys the next day), they'd only spent 5 days on the kitchen and as a result they were in a HUGE rush, plus they still hadn't finished the living room/entry which was supposed be done several days prior. The guys seemed frenzied and irritated and there were a lot of short cuts. 2. Lied about marking cabinet doors and putting them back correctly..... I knew from having our cabinets painted in our old house that they're supposed to mark where each cabinet door goes because things are not always as "plumb" as we think and if you don't put all the doors back in the exact same location, they can be wonky (because the hinge might be in a slightly different spot on the door and/or on the cabinet. Well, after Mark's crew got the kitchen back together, a good number of the doors were wonky and misaligned. Some were even overlapping. They blamed the new hinges (even though I got the EXACT same hinges in a different finish at a specialty hardware store). They swore to us that they marked the cabinet doors. Well, a couple of days after Mark stood in our kitchen and promised us that the doors had all had been put back in their original locations, I went to put the metal baskets back inside the false drawers at the sink and at the stove. We have two sets and they're different. Guess what? The baskets from the sink didn't fit because the doors from the sink had been put back on the stove and vice-versa. Because of this, I know for fact that they didn't put the doors back in their original locations and they lied to our faces about doing so. 3. Lots of short-cuts.... Where do I start? When you pull tape off after painting, sometimes bits of the paint come off. This is to be expected. But I also expect that when I pay for a professional paint job, the painters will go back and touch up those spots. It's sort of important when you've painted the trim white and there are spots of dark oak showing where the paint has come off.... The edge lines around the windows and sliding door were ATROCIOUS. I'm not a professional painter and I can do B+/A- edge. These edges were flat out "F" quality. Totally unprofessional..... They ended up coming back to fix them to a B/B- quality. They were also supposed to fill holes and clean things up where needed on the cabinets. There are all kinds of holes (and even a tack) under the top cabinets that didn't get filled. In fact, they didn't even get a full coat of paint under the top cabinets.... Brass hinges painted over, lots of spots of paint I had to scrape off the wood floor, white paint on the dishwasher that I can't get off to save my life... There's a spot on the ceiling behind the overhead light that didn't get sprayed, spots on the door that weren't completely covered, edges of trim that didn't get painted at all. At the top of the cabinets were the wood meets the wall, they got a bunch of the semi-gloss paint on the eggshell walls (really sloppy edges) so now there are all these shiny splotches.... Didn't remove tape in a couple areas, didn't finish cleaning messy bits when done, threw out plus plates and switch plate covers, lost rod in laundry room, didn't paint wall area at base of cabinets (under overhang). In the bucket of leftover paint, someone had thrown in TWO rollers so I had to fish those out when I went to use it. 4. A wide variety in skill levels amongst the painters.... A couple of the painters were there for most of the days but several were there only a day or two. One of the guys that seemed to be more skilled expressed frustration about having to re-do prep work done by the previous day's crew. He also told me that when he tried to fix one of the holes I drilled for the new handles that he was told NOT to fix it. Although the misaligned hole was my own fault, but it took me 30 seconds of drilling to expand the hole a bit to get the handle to fit. I'm furious that he was instructed to leave it for me. Such a little thing? We spent $6,000. Seriously. Dot your i's and cross your t's.... On the last day when they were rushing to finish there was a really young guy finishing the upper entry way and instead of opening the wood door to get it out of the way of the roller spatter, he left it closed and got white paint all over it, which I had to scrape off. 5. Job not done to specifications + communication breakdown between boss and crew...... In addition to the kitchen cabinets, all the downstairs wood doors were to be painted white. I specifically wanted them sprayed so there would be no brush strokes. At the end of the job, two of the doors that were supposed to get spray-painted didn't get done. When they came back to do the doors, they were hand-brushed instead of sprayed. Also, they painted the front door even though they weren't supposed to. IN A NUTSHELL: If you're just having some walls painted, they'll probably be just fine. If you have a more complex job, I wouldn't recommend them. I realize and appreciate that this job could have been a lot worse than it was, but it could also have been a lot better. As someone who paints a lot, I know that when you're painting, you are very focused on a small area at a time and you constantly make decisions about how good of a job you want to do. I don't expect perfection, but when you find this many mistakes and short-cuts it's clear that the painter was aiming for adequate rather than stellar. But the ultimate responsibility for the outcome of a job lies with the boss who checked the work everyday and signed off on it. Overall grade: C (I could only add 10 images but I have many more.)

Dear [Member Name Removed], Thank you for taking the time to write this detailed review. There were many issues you brought up. We did not mark the doors correctly when we took them off and thus we didn't get them in the right spots when they went back on. We did feel the time crunch and trying to work around the other trades in the house did not work out well. One of my employees needed to attend to some personal issues, hence the Saturday we did not work. I should have insisted we use the product we usually use for cabinets instead of the one you asked me to use. ( my fault not yours) The product we usually use dries quicker and harder allowing us to recoat and handle sooner. But, you are right we made many mistakes and I am sorry. I have already addressed most of the issues you bought up with my employees. Going forward we are going to remember our mistakes and strive to not repeat them. Mark Powers

We had an excellent experience with Mark Powers and are very happy with the work he did on our home. He is a very professional, very responsive contractor. From initial consult to the final walk through, we were impressed with Mark's interest in our project and consideration for getting the details right. When we pointed out a few missed spots that needed touch-up at the end of the project, he was right back at the house to make it right. He always returned our calls, was willing to work with our schedule when we had to postpone the job, and even set us up with a color consultant to help us choose the right colors. His team got the work done on time as promised and did a nice job. The price was very reasonable as well, and included power washing as well as painting. We've had some negative experiences with contractors recently, but our experience with Mark Powers was not one of them. We highly recommend Mark Powers Painting!

Extremely impressed...5 out of 5 stars. The painting crew were punctual, friendly and incredibly efficient. We scheduled to have our house painted back in March and Mark was very excellent staying in contact with us throughout the months right up to the day they arrived to paint our house. The crew took great care to keep the site orderly and tidy, were very kind to our landscape while power washing and painting. It was a great experience and we would recommend them to anyone looking to hire a paint contractor.

There was unexpected snow on the morning of our appointment and I was very surprised and impressed when the painters showed up at 7:30 a.m. on time after apparently having an adventure driving around a downed tree on their road in a rural area. They went straight to work on a difficult job and were pleasant, experienced and hard working. They made short work of what was a complicated and frankly annoying series of tasks to restore the tall wooden baseboards without damaging the newly refinished fir floor. They made the surface smooth, installed a quarter round of base shoe all the way around the room and painted everything a clean, uniform white. They also repaired some areas of wall and paint damage above my new countertops and did such a skillful job you can't even tell it wasn't the original paint job. I was very grateful to them.
Description of Work: After having five layers of linoleum removed from my 1926 kitchen along with ugly rubber base done by previous owner, I had a bunch of tough glue, old paint and damage on my wood baseboards all the way around my kitchen and a gap below it. I tried for a year to find someone to take on this labor-intensive, aggravating repair job and several painters and handymen failed to call back or give a firm bid. Then I found Mark Powers Painting and his crew fixed it all very efficiently and attractively in short order.

The house was a challenge in that the old paint was very worn, requiring a lot of prep work. Large 3 story house. The adjacent houses are also very close so that access was difficult. The house also has a lot of trim area. The crew arrived as scheduled. I had hired Mark Powers earlier in the year to paint a three story rental. The members of the crew are experienced painters and are familiar with older homes and lead paint issues. During the job there were sections of the walls that bubbled from adhesion problems in underlying areas. The crew removed and reworked the areas until the problem was resolved. The crew worked for a week and a half, cleaned up each day and asked for feedback every couple of days. The house looks great and there are two coats of paint everywhere.
Description of Work: The company painted the exterior of our 3-story, 100 year old home and our porch/deck. Everything received two coats.

We recently purchased a new home that had some rather interesting color choices throughout. I decided we would get the entire interior painted after getting keys and before moving in. It was a pretty tight window but Mark was able to accommodate our schedule. We had the whole interior painted (minus bathrooms and closets) in a few different colors. Mark was great about keeping us informed about what was going on and even let us know in advance that it was probably going to take a little extra time. His team worked hard and did a great job. The house looks awesome! We are definitely going to call him again when we are ready to paint ceilings, trim, bathrooms, and closets. I would recommend him to anyone!

It turned out great. Mark was one of two painters referred to us by the finish carpenter that replaced our old beat up stair banister and railings. We have a dog and it was a challenge for Mark to do a good job with dog hairs floating around and getting into the clear coat. I don't know how many times he had to do extra work to get a hair out, but in the end it was near perfect, if not perfect. I could have done the work myself, but having a professional come in saved me a lot of time and frustration. I got three estimates before I made my decision to go with Mark. One estimate from another highly rated Angies list company came in at $2,300. I was not sure if they wanted the work or not with an estimate like that.

Mark and his crew did an exceptional job of cleaning, filling in cracks (including claw marks from our cat in the front door and deck door), priming, and painting exterior surfaces and an aluminum rail. On the aluminum rail they had to scrape off old paint multiple times to get a good clean finish. They happily changed paint color on the gutters after we changed our minds at no additional charge, and came back after the job was complete to add a wood block under the eaves to prevent bats from nesting there. Our relatively new deck was in poor shape due to incorrectly applied stain. Mark stripped the old product off, and researched the right material to use on the deck, and the deck now looks wonderful. His crew was professional, polite, and courteous throughout - he has some excellent workers (I remember Steven in particular but all of them were good to deal with). I will probably ask them to come by periodically to help maintain the work they have done.

The job went very well. I knew that for this size of job, the company would fit it in as they had time available. However, since it was September, I didn't want the lack of a fixed date to extend into the rainy season. That didn't turn out to be a problem, since Mark called with a date within 10 days of the contract being signed. The job was done well. It wasn't a real technical job, but there were no drips and they feathered the paint in so you can't tell where the bare wood was. They were careful with trimming the shrubs that they didn't take any more than was required. I left the equipment for the trimming out, and they put it back in the same spot when they left. I really appreciate a company that will treat a small job of a few hundred dollars with the same respect as a large one. This is the busy time of year for painters, and I've had some tell me that they wouldn't touch the job for less than a certain figure (like $1,000). I thought Mark's price was very reasonable. He was very responsive and had a bid to me within a few days of our initial conversation. I will definitely use this company again for my painting needs.
Description of Work: Painted home downspouts and exterior bare patches resulting from a new gutter installation. There were 5 downspouts and areas of bare wood, each was 2 stories in height and required some trimming of shrubs. Mark supplied the primer for the bare wood. I supplied the house paint.

I purchased the Angie's List big deal, two painters for a day for $570. I had been wanting to get some rooms painted and planned on doing it myself, but was not looking forward to it. This deal seemed like a good solution, although I had never hired a professional painter before. I spoke with Mark on the phone about getting it scheduled and he wanted to do it on a rainy day, which I understood. Mark is very friendly and helpful and I appreciated his input on paint/sheen selections. Two of his workers arrived on time and got right to work. We had moved everything but the beds out and had also removed all of the switch plates so they had that much more time to paint. Mark had warned us that depending on the dry time of the ceiling paint and the need for a second coat they may not get everything done in the one day. Mark said he wasn't trying to up-sell us and I don't think he was. Mark did stop by the job to deliver their paychecks. He seemed more concerned then that they wouldn't get the work done by end of the day, even though the head worker thought they could. In the end, they were able to get everything done in the one day and they did work a full day. When they left they said Mark would probably be in touch to see how they did. I expected to hear from him but didn't. Had he called, I would have told him they did a great job. If I had to come up with one thing they could improve on, it would be removing light fixtures before painting. We didn't take them down and I just expected they would do so. I'm sure they are skilled at painting around them and I know temporarily taking them down is a pain, but it seems that would be the professional way to do it. We were planning to replace the fixtures with ceiling fans and had I not paid attention would have found my self doing touch up painting when I took down the old fixtures. However, when I requested they remove the light fixtures prior to painting they did so. I should mention that the drywall repair was in a different room and they did a good job fixing that and matching the wall texture. I had left over paint and it blended it well. Overall, they did a great job at a very reasonable price. I would certainly consider using them again.

Working with Mark and his team was great from the start. Mark was so responsive and up front about the whole experience. I was clear on the price, what was included, what my options were, and he made recommendations when needed. The entire project came in just below his estimated cost. All in all the project took 4 days plus a half day of power washing a few days before painting began. There were a few fits and starts due to weather, but each day we'd chat with Mark to review what was done, what was left to do and what the next day would bring. His crew was friendly and professional, and worked efficiently. Our house looks fantastic and we'll use Mark again the next time we need painting services!
