There are 6 steps, and they stopped the railing on the 5th step. When I asked about it, they said they could add on to the railing, but it would cost extra. I don't think I should pay extra for their mistake. I emailed them and said I did not want to pay more.

WE DID NOT MAKE A MISTAKE. THE STEEL HAND RAILING WE INSTALLED IS ONLY AVAILABLE IN 6 FOOT SECTIONS. THE ONLY WAY TO GET THE HANDRAIL TO 7 FEET IS TO USE TWO SECTIONS. IT IS CLEAR ON OUR PROPOSAL THAT WE WOULD BE INSTALLING A 6FT SECTION OF RAILING. THE MEMBER WAS VERY SENSITIVE TO COST AND ADDING THAT SECOND SECTION WOULD HAVE DOUBLED THE COST. THIS INCREASED COST WOULD NOT REALLY HAVE ADDED ANY VALUE TO THE HANDRAIL – EITHER ESTHETICALLY, OR FUNCTIONALLY. THE HANDRAIL IS ACTUALLY LONG ENOUGH AS IT IS TO WORK PROPERLY AND IT LOOKS FINE. HER COMMENT IS THAT IT IS NOT IN THE SAME “CONFIGURATION” AS THE ORIGINAL. AS THINGS CHANGE OVER THE YEARS, WE CANNOT GET MATERIALS NOW THAT ALLOW US TO INSTALL THE RAILING IN THE SAME “CONFIGURATION”. WE’RE SORRY FOR ANY INCONVENIENCE THIS HAS CAUSED THE MEMBER.

The lady I spoke with over the phone was very nice, but the gentleman who came out to give me an estimate spoke in general terms about what it was going to cost me to repair my gutters. He didn't bring a ladder to look at the actual work. He then told me, he would have to charge me to have someone come out to bring a ladder and do an inspection. I thought that this was the wrong thing to say and he advised me that he wasn't going to pay to have someone come out to bring a ladder just to perform an inspection. I told him, he should have already had a ladder with him to perform the inspection when he came out. I would absolutely never call them again.
Description of Work: They came out to give me an estimate on repairing box gutters.
Everything went very well. The work was essential done in one day. All old parts were hauled away and everything was left very tidy. I could not have gotten this cooperation and follow through from my husband.
Description of Work: We had many things in our home that need to be taken care of and just never had the time. The list included hanging a ceiling fan, replacing a light, fixing seals around our exterior doors, rehanging fixtures, repairing our garden gate and taking down a basketball pole. They seem to be able to handle almost everything you can hand to them.
Dan was awesome. He was very professional and did great work. They said it would take a week and were done with everything in three days. Their price might of been a little higher than others but it was done right the first time. We definitely got what we paid for. They seem to have a lot of integrity in the work they did.
Description of Work: They power washed all of our siding, replaced portions of wood facade, repainted exterior, replaced French door from kitchen to deck, replaced floor joists and other flooring and deck repair.

Came a little after time frame given, bud did let me know. Was very polite, left no mess. I'm not sure if cost was high or not. First time I've had this work done, but was similar to other estimates obtained.
Description of Work: Recaulk bath & toilet. Repair leaky bathroom faucet. Replace faucet in kitchen with additional spray. Repair fan - determine why fan is very slow. Repair hole in door.
Rotten sills and window molding was discovered by house painters and needed immediate replacement. House painter recommended this House Doctor's franchisee who came out the next morning to look at and bid the work. His carpenter came out the same day to begin work. Difficulty getting material for the half round window molding looked like it would delay the work up to 2 weeks. However, the carpenter and proprietor worked the phones to track down the material and the carpenter came the next day and completed all the work. The Carpenter, Mike, was very skilled, courteous and detail oriented. In both damaged windows, he worked to ensure complete water proofing and tight repairs, using high grade cedar and ruberized molding for the replaced sections.

The estimator was prompt and professional. I had confidence that the work and materials would be high-quality. It a was very close decision, but I ultimately went with a competitor who demonstrated a slight bit more attention to detail on describing the work that would be done and the attention to detail that would go into it. The price was essentially the same as the competitor I chose, but slightly higher. Overall, I was very impressed with the estimator and the company. I will definitely call them again if I have a similar need in the future.

Constance (in the office) and Dan Landon, the owner, responded immediately to our request to get an estimate for various jobs we needed done. Dan was very patient with us as we changed our minds a couple times on the work, and Constance was very easy and fun to talk with on the phone. Dan even fixed a pesky doorknob and storm door when he came to our house to provide an estimate of the work. Steve came to our house actually a bit earlier than we anticipated and went through all the work that needed to be done. We were extremely pleased with the work completed by him and Sean. Steve stayed quite late the last day to finish everything up so he wouldn't have to drag the work out another day. We were completely comfortable with having both Steve and Sean in our home. They are obviously very professional and trustworthy. I would not hesitate to have Steve and Sean do more work in my home.
Description of Work: Steve Nutley and Sean Hammann repaired, patched and painted plaster that had cracked and was water damaged, re-primed and painted the very rusty steel walk-out garage door and replaced the door sweep after repairing the concrete that had been damaged by waterproofers, patched holes in the basement ceiling from previous work, and repaired mortar on the outside of the house to prevent future water damage. Steve also built a door frame and door where there had never been a door, being very cautious about retaining the character of the arched doorway.

One of the problems was that the guy came to give me the estimate apparently didn't communicate his visits with the guy who was going to do the work and so when he came he didn't know what he was supposed to do. He was supposed to be here at 9:00 and didn't show up until around 11-11:30. I was hoping to get out of the house and I had to stick around and wait for him to get finished. When he finished the job, it was actually very nice. The carpenter said that I should put horizontal strips up the ramp and I told him that that sounded great, but that was never brought up again. I called and got a hold of the man who does the estimates and explained that to him about the strips. I have never heard from him since. The carpenter did a fine job, I think the man who does the estimates is where the problem is.

I needed the caulking around the bathtub removed (the professional re-modelers did a horrible job) and replaced. My front door was badly weathered and needed to be re-sealed. Shawn (who was wonderful by the way) did an outstanding job of laying a bead of caulk that not only looked good, but also was a much better color match than what was there. The front door was only supposed to need a light sanding and re-varnishing. As it turned out, he ended up having to sand it all the way down and re-stain it before he could varnish it. It looks great now. I was very pleased with his efficiency and craftsmanship and will definitely use him again. Although the work was more than expected, they did not charge me any more than the original estimate.
Description of Work: Removed old caulking around bathtub and replaced. Re-finished front door.
It was a very professional operation. The person who came knew exactly what he was doing and simply went about his business. He was pleasant and did a very good, thorough job. It was done timely and within the time frame previously agreed on. All in all, it was a very enjoyable experience. I congratulate them on being top notch.

Not pleased with the experience at all.
Description of Work: We called them to do handiwork for some tasks around the house. They mailed us a form letter that read "after looking at our work schedule and reviewing your needs, we regret that we will not be able to bid on your project(s) at this time." Very disheartening to receive this. If they weren't interested in doing the work, they should not have wasted our time coming out to our house especially when they promised we would get our bid in a day or two. Obviously, they must have looked at our job as unimportant to them. We shall look for a handyman whose interested in doing the work.

WE DID NOT SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT WITH YOU TO GO OVER YOUR PROJECTS WITH THE INTENTION OF TURNING YOU DOWN. THAT WOULD BE A WASTE OF EVERYONE’S TIME. THE ESTIMATOR KNEW THAT YOU WERE SELLING YOUR HOME AND THAT YOU NEEDED THE WORK DONE RIGHT AWAY. AFTER WE LOOKED AT OUR SCHEDULE, WE KNEW IT WOULD BE A WHILE BEFORE WE COULD GET YOU SCHEDULED IN. RATHER THAN WASTE YOUR TIME, WE LET YOU KNOW RIGHT AWAY SO YOU COULD MAKE OTHER ARRANGEMENTS. WE ARE SORRY THAT THIS CAUSED YOU AN INCONVENIENCE, BUT WE GOT BACK TO YOU AS FAST AS WE COULD. THE ESTIMATOR DID NOT PROMISE YOU A BID; HE SAID HE’D GET BACK TO YOU IN A FEW DAYS.

Cooperative office staff, understanding of concerns. Work done professionally and cleanup was complete.
Description of Work: Dryer vent moved to new wall, hole drilled through brick wall, new pipe run.
Dan came out in a timely fashion to provide the estimate. I took him through the house explaining the repairs and I found him a bit "pushy." When I showed him the door in the bathroom, he said it couldn't be fixed. It would have to be replaced and would provide the door and stain it. As he was leaving, he noticed the door stuck and said he would recaulk it. He said he would put the estimate together and get it to me in a day. The estimate was mailed and I thought it was high. My husband and I discussed the different estimates and decided on just putting in doggie door. I called the office and Connie(?) said she would contact Dan. She called shortly thereafter to tell me that Dan said he couldn't do just the doggie door ($264) because it wasn't worth their time and cost of gas, that if I added a couple of hundred dollars more he could do it. I thought that was just an ESTIMATE. He did work for other clients under $500.

WE GAVE THE MEMBER A PROPOSAL FOR A LOT OF WORK TO BE DONE. OUR ESTIMATOR WENT THROUGH EACH OF THE TASKS WITH HER AND CREATED AN ESTIMATE TO RESPOND TO EACH OF THOSE CONCERNS. WE DON’T UNDERSTAND THE COMMENT ABOUT THE BATHROOM DOOR. THE DOOR WAS SPLIT FROM THEM BREAKING INTO THE BATHROOM WHEN THEY GOT LOCKED OUT. SHE IS IMPLYING THAT IT COULD BE FIXED AND NOT REPLACED. WHEN A DOOR IS SPLIT LIKE THAT, THERE ISN’T ANYTHING THAT CAN BE DONE TO REPAIR IT. THE ESTIMATE TURNED OUT TO BE ABOUT $4,600 WITH ALL THE WORK SHE ASKED US TO LOOK AT. THE DOGGIE DOOR WAS TO BE INSTALLED IN A STEEL DOOR THAT HAS GLASS IN THE UPPER HALF OF THE DOOR. CUTTING THE LOWER PART OF THE STEEL DOOR ENOUGH TO GET A DOGGIE DOOR INSTALLED COULD POTENTIALLY WEAKEN THE DOOR. WE ESTIMATED THIS TASK AS A PART OF A BIGGER PICTURE AS A COURTESY TO THE MEMBER AND WERE WILLING TO WORK OUT THE ISSUES WITH THE DOGGIE DOOR AS PART OF A LARGER PROJECT. WHEN SHE SAID THAT ALL SHE WANTED WAS THE DOGGIE DOOR INSTALLED AND NOTHING ELSE, WE WERE NOT WILLING TO TAKE THE RISK OF PROBLEMS WITH THE STEEL DOOR. WE WERE ALSO NOT UNDERSTANDING WHY SHE WOULD NOT GO AHEAD WITH SEVERAL SMALLER PROJECTS ($200) THAT SEEMED PRETTY IMPORTANT. A HALL LIGHT SYSTEM THAT DOES NOT WORK AND FRONT DOOR WEATHER-STRIP THAT IS SHOT.

Dan was extremely polite & professional. He showed up right on time, brought his laptop & printer with him, & after he'd surveyed the work to be done, he entered the measurements & printed me a quote. I about choked, though, when I saw the $5100 price tag. It was a about $3000 more than I'd expected to pay for a 6x4 shower stall. When asked about alternatives he said he could have done a fiberglass insert for $4100 (again about $3000 more than expectation). I thanked him & decided to get estimates from two other companies. Both other companies quoted $1500-$1700 for the same job House Doctors quoted $5100. I'm sure they do very good work, but at that level of price inflation, they're not going to be able to demonstrate it to me.

WHEN YOU GET COMPETITIVE BIDS, IT IS IMPORTANT TO BE SURE THAT THE BIDS ARE COMPARABLE IN THE SCOPE OF WORK. IN THIS CASE, THE ESTIMATES COULD NOT HAVE BEEN OF COMPARABLE SCOPE. OUR PROPOSAL INCLUDED ALL LABOR AND MATERIALS. OUR COST FOR THE MATERIALS ALONE FOR THE SCOPE OF WORK WE ESTIMATED WAS A LITTLE LESS THAN THE COMPETITIVE BIDS. IN THIS CASE THEIR HOURLY RATE WOULD BE ABOUT $10 PER HOUR. THIS IS HIGHLY UNLIKELY. IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THE COMPETITIVE BIDS WERE FOR LABOR ONLY AND DID NOT INCLUDE MATERIALS. MANY NEIGHBORHOOD CRAFTSMEN DO NOT INCLUDE THE COST OF MATERIALS IN THEIR PROPOSALS AND DEPEND ON THE CUSTOMER TO GET MATERIALS. IN THIS CASE, THE COST OF MATERIALS AND THE TIME/COST TO GET THE MATERIALS TO THE JOB SITE SHOULD ALSO BE CONSIDERED IN THE OVERALL COST OF THE PROJECT. IF WE DID NOT EXPLAIN OUR PROPOSAL IN ENOUGH DETAIL, WE APOLOGIZE FOR THAT. WE ARE NOT “INFLATING” OUR PRICES. WE COULD NOT STAY IN BUSINESS IF WE WERE INFLATING OUR PRICES.
The work was overpriced and not properly completed in several areas. For instance, the downspouts are still blocked and a gutter still overflows the dryer vent was not replaced.(only its exit cover was) The garage door opener was not replaced, but only removed. The workers tried to cut corners, and were totally unresponsive to customer dissatisfaction with the quality of the work. We would certainly never use this company again, and strongly recommend that no one else use them either.

THIS WORK WAS COMPLETED IN NOVEMBER OF 2006. THE WORK INCLUDED STRIPPING WALLPAPER, A TILE BACKSPLASH, AND PAINTING IN THE KITCHEN. THE BACK DOOR WE REPLACED WAS NOT FRAMED PROPERLY AND WAS VERY TROUBLESOME. THERE AREN’T ANY ISSUES WITH THIS WORK. WE DID CLEAN THE GUTTERS AND DOWNSPOUTS. WE RAN A HOSE ON THE ROOF AND FOUND THE DOWNSPOUT DRAINS WERE CLOGGED. WE CLEANED THE DRAINS AND DID NOT CHARGE FOR THAT. WE HAD ICE THIS WINTER AND THE GUTTERS MAY HAVE BEEN CLOGGED THEN. WE WERE TO REPLACE THE NUMERIC KEYPAD ON THE GARAGE DOOR OPENER. WE COULD NOT GET A REPLACEMENT NUMERIC KEYPAD (THIS HAPPENS OFTEN.) THEY WERE NOT CHARGED FOR THIS. THE GARAGE DOOR OPENER ITSELF WAS NOT REMOVED AND STILL WORKS FINE. THE DRYER DUCT WAS CLEANED OUT AND THE OUTSIDE VENT WAS REPLACED. THERE IS NO VALUE IN “REPLACING” THE DRYER DUCT, BUT WE’D BE QUITE HAPPY TO REPLACE IT IF THERE IS STILL SOME CONCERN. BECAUSE THE BASEMENT CEILING TILES ARE PAINTED IN PLACE, THEY WILL BE DAMAGED IF WE REMOVE THEM TO REPLACE THE DRYER DUCT THOUGH. WE TRIED TO WORK WITH THIS CUSTOMER TO RESOLVE ISSUES. IN FACT THEY RECEIVED A LOT OF ADDITIONAL WORK THEY WERE NOT CHARGED FOR INCLUDING: CAULKED KITCHEN COUNTER TOP AND CABINETS, INSTALLED PHONE JACK, AUGURED GUTTER DRAINS, INSTALLED TILES ON AN ANGLE INSTEAD OF STRAIGHT (LOTS OF EXTRA CUTTING), AND PAINTED THE GARAGE ENTRY DOOR. WE ARE HAPPY TO RESOLVE ANY ISSUES, BUT WE CANNOT CONTINUE TO DO ADDITIONAL WORK AND NOT BE PAID FOR IT.

They arrive on time with all of the necessary materials to complete the required jobs. The work was performed by Sean Hammann who did a very good job. He appeared to work very efficiently and seemed to completely know what he was doing as it related to the required jobs.
Description of Work: We had them re-caulk the kitchen sink area, the shower in the master bedroom, a tub and shower area in another bedroom. They adjusted some drawer blank panels in the kitchen. They replaced the weather stripping on the garage service entry door.
The estimator was efficient, and left us a written quote. He followed up as the two handymen worked all week. The handymen were very friendly, worked very hard, and have multiple skills, saving us the hassle of having to contract individually with painters, electricians, etc.
