Knowing we couldn't do an attic fan and downspout ourselves, we opted to hire someone to do this. I was so impressed with other Angie's List reports, that we requested this company do several other smaller jobs, too - things that we never quite had time to get to. The initial visit for the estimate took place the day after I called. There wasn't anything on our list that they couldn't handle. The estimate was prepared and presented that day at our kitchen table. I would have liked to see, and next time will ask for an itemized estimate, since we had so many different little jobs. The work was scheduled for 2 days later. The owner called that morning with an update on the handyman's arrival time. The handyman was pleasant, knowledgeable and professional. Thank you, House Doctors, for helping us cross so many chores off our list!
Description of Work: Installed downspout from 2nd level roof to lower gutter; replaced attic vent fan & thermostat; replaced door "closer" on kitchen door going to the garage; replaced soffit panel where there was a hole (to prevent birds nesting); caulked shower stall; reattached loose aluminum siding; reattached exterior shutter; tightened interior door hinge to prevent door swinging.

Worker arrived on time and finished job early. The only negative experience was partially a mis-communication of expectations. I had left the instructions for assembling the shed in a location that was accessible from the outside of the house which I assumed would enable the worker to get started without knocking on the door and disturbing my mother who was still in bed. I did not specify directly the the door not be knocked on so I don't consider this to be a major mis-step.

They were very prompt to make the estimate and seemed very helpful. They took out our front door, and put in a piece of plywood and then said they could return it three days later. The door was never returned and I called, but they didn't return my call in time, which never happened before. When they did call me they told me that the guy who was supposed to refinish it had quit. I didn't have a door for a while and then they delivered it and I ended up varnishing it myself, because the guy they had sent to finish the job was misinformed and wasn't sure what needed to be done. They did come and re-install the door, but they did not insulate it like they said they would. After all this they also refused to knock any money off the original price although not all the work was done. It was quite the nightmare.
Description of Work: He came to the house and removed our door to refinish it.

THIS WORK WAS COMPLETED LAST SUMMER. AT THAT TIME WE WERE HAVING CRAFTSMAN ISSUES THAT WE FEEL ARE NOW RESOLVED. WE DID HAVE TO SEND SOMEONE TO COMPLETE THE WORK STARTED BY ANOTHER CRAFTSMAN. THE MEMBER GOT IMPATIENT DURING THE JOB AND VARNISHED THE DOOR A SECOND COAT BEFORE WE WERE ABLE TO FINISH IT THE NEXT DAY. THE DOOR NEEDED TO DRY FIRST BEFORE WE COULD APPLY A SECOND COAT. WE WERE GOING TO FINISH IT THE NEXT DAY AND HAD THAT SCHEDULED WITH THE MEMBER. IF THERE IS SOMETHING WE MISSED, THEN WE’D BE HAPPY TO ADDRESS THAT. WE WERE NOT TOLD THAT THERE WAS ANYTHING OUTSTANDING ON THE JOB. THE MEMBER APPROVED THE WORK AND SETTLED UP WITH US AND DID NOT MENTION THAT THERE WERE ISSUES REMAINING. IF THERE ARE STILL QUALITY ISSUES FROM THIS WORK, WE WOULD BE HAPPY TO ADDRESS THEM EVEN THOUGH IT’S BEEN OVER A YEAR. JUST LET US KNOW. WE’RE SORRY THE MEMBER HAS HAD SUCH A BAD EXPERIENCE WITH US. THIS IS NOT HOW WE CONDUCT OUR BUSINESS. WE DO APOLOGIZE FOR THE ISSUE WITH OUR CRAFTSMAN. WE’RE DOING ALL WE CAN TO PREVENT IT FROM HAPPENING AGAIN.

Office coordinator was very polite and efficient, with excellent telephone skills when we first called about the job. Dan Landon did an excellent job of assessing the work and explaining what would be needed when he came to prepare an estimate. Was very knowledgeable, thorough and professional. During the walkthrough, he was shown extra tiles left by the previous owner, as well as matching paint for the ceiling work which we had kept stored since the ing work was done. He took same into account and lowered the price accordingly when he prepared the bid. Office Coordinator did an excellent job of arranging the work schedule to fit our needs and coordinating things as the work date approached. Fritz, the actual workman, arrived promptly as scheduled, worked quickly, efficiently and professionally, kept us posted as to what and how he was doing, and gave us some excellent advice as to what we needed to do after he was finished. He told us in detail how to seal the grout after it had dried, and recommended some products that proved to be easy to use and very effective. The work was estimated to take about a day and a half, and he finished the work about an hour and a half ahead of schedule on the second day. The price was a bit on the high side, but was reduced because of the supplied materials, plus their Angie's List Discount. As discussed with Dan, we'd rather pay a bit more for quality workmanship (and in this case, the workmanship was the majority of the job) than get a "lowball" price and have the workmanship turn out to be shoddy. We believe that we got good value, good service and excellent workmanship for the money. While Dan was here to assess the job, we also spoke with him about another, entirely different, project that would need to be done sometime in the future. He gave us some preliminary information and numbers about that as well. When the time comes, we'll definitely be calling them for a bid. All told, an excellent experience all around. They'll be on our "short list" for future work!
Description of Work: Clean, regrout, reinstall and caulk edges of majority of floor tile and regrout some wall tile for Master Bathroom Shower Stall. Floor grout was old and had become degraded in many places, with some tiles loose. Also, repair water damage to ceiling drywall below bathroom, re-"mud" and paint repaired area.

One workman arrived and waited a short time for the second man to come with the boom lift, explaining that he had to go to a second location as the first one didn't have a suitable lift. He then directed the placement of the lift in the back of the house. A short while later the first man said that he was going to work on some inside jobs that he had started the previous day. (He had been unable to do them all because of a previous job that he had to go back and finish. Those items were all completed on a separate work order with no problems.) When I stepped outside to see how the siding was coming along, I was quite surprised to see that no siding was removed. He had loosened the end of the siding and was re-nailing it. When I asked about the waving, he said that it was due to the framing and couldn't be fixed but that he'd put some nails in it. I asked about the J channels and he said they were all right. He had arrived sometime after 9 am with the lift and pulled out by 1 pm after waiting for the other man to come outside to move his truck. I believe he may have also helped a little with the interior jobs. I paid him as agreed in the invoice as I understood from previous jobs that the workmen did not deal with the pricing but noted that I would speak to Dan about the cost as the job was so very different from the estimate. When I spoke to Dan, I was completely shocked that he stood by the cost despite the extreme difference in the scope of the work done. He did apply two coupons ($200) to the job bring the total down to $1649. I have no idea whether to believe Dan or Mike (the workman) about the job. It looks all right except for the waving, but I don't know if it is done properly or not as I had also believed Dan about what needed to be done. Dan has now (a week later) offered $300 off a future job, saying that would bring this job down to $1349 (which I believe is still unreasonable). I don't want a future job. I want this job pricing corrected before I would consider using them again. He said that he is not comfortable quoting time ($80 hour per man) and equipment/materials after we agreed to the set price (with no itemization). Bottom line: the job was not done according to the invoice/estimate, but the cost remains. I've paid to have the siding rehung, and it was not done. There were not two men working on it. One was inside being paid on a separate invoice. I do believe it would have taken two men to do the job sold to me.
Description of Work: We had siding that was loosened during a storm. House Doctors had previously "tucked" the corner in, but after the June storm, much more came loose. Dan explained that the entire section of siding needed to be removed and rehung as there was additional waving and that it was probably improperly installed. Also he noted that the upper J channel and corner siding were loose. He said it had to be done from the bottom up, would require a boom lift and two men. We believed him and agreed to his original price of $1849 which seemed acceptable due to the scope of the work.

We contracted with this member to repair the loose vinyl siding on the back of her house. Our invoice reflects the scope of that work. The siding was loose on the second story of the house and we needed a lift to safely re-attach the siding. We pulled back the siding to access the corner piece and J-channel that needed to be re-attached, and then re-installed the loose vinyl siding pieces. Vinyl siding locks together and can only be properly installed from the bottom up. This is exactly what was done. The wavy nature of the siding is a problem with uneven studs in the wall. Sheathing board was not originally installed by the builder, which would have prevented the wavy appearance of the very flexible siding. The customer agreed to a fixed price on the scope of work specified. The work was completed. With the proper equipment and the skills necessary to do this kind of work, it can seem to be very easy. If there is a quality issue with the work done, we are ore than happy to come out and address that. We are not hearing that there is an issue with the quality of work. The member only wants a lower price. It is not appropriate to negotiate a price after the work had been done to the original scope. We gave the customer a $200 refund on the original invoice because of their concerns. We also offered a $300 discount on the future job with us. We feel that this is more than adequate to address their concerns. We are sorry that they feel we did anything inappropriate. In the future we are more than willing to work on a Tim and materials basis if they are more comfortable with that arrangement. Most people though, like a fixed price so they know their costs ahead of time.

We were so impressed with this company. We live in a rural area and we were having difficulty finding someone who would come to our home. They scheduled an appointment for a free estimate and called they day before to confirm it. They came at the time scheduled and gave us an estimate the same day. We called them to set up an appointment to have the work done and they came two days later. The day of service the workman called on his way and was here at the scheduled time. The work was completed to our satisfaction and he was extremely professional. The cleanup was so great you couldn't even tell someone had been here. We would definitely hire this company again. Being business owners ourselves, we don't often have the time to do things we need to get done, so they will be the first folks we call to help us out. Thanks for such a pleasant experience!!!!!
Description of Work: We have a bump out window in our dining room that had not been sealed and caulked correctly at the bottom by our builder. It did not fit tightly and had cracks around it. You could actually see daylight in the basement. This led to mice getting into the house through the basement and into our kitchen. House Doctors came and installed an exterior grade plywood cover on the bump out and bolted it on to hold the joists secure. It was sealed tightly to prevent critters from entering our home. In the basement they added more insulation to insulate the bump out.

I thought that my granddaughters had damaged the bedroom wall somehow, until about 2 weeks after they went home. That's when we saw the hole in the outside wall as well. The siding was a real issue as it could not be matched and very few people are willing to work on it. He found the lacrosse ball in the wall. He was able to use sheet metal and paint to make it look very good. It was mid second story. He also did a great job cutting the damaged dry wall out inside and repairing it.

THERE APPEARS TO BE SOME CONFUSION HERE. THE MEMBER TOLD ME THAT THEY HAD RECEIVED OTHER ESTIMATES BY PHONE. I PERSONALLY VISITED THE HOUSE AND REVIEWED THE WORK. THE WORK THEY ASKED TO BE DONE WAS FOR THREE WINDOWS. THAT IS WHAT I ESTIMATED. THE PRICE PER WINDOW IS GENERALLY AROUND $200 WHICH WOULD EXPLAIN OUR ESTIMATE. I DON’T BELIEVE THE PHONE ESTIMATE THEY RECEIVED WAS FOR THREE WINDOWS OR THE COMPANY PROVIDING THE ESTIMATE OVER THE PHONE DID NOT UNDERSTAND THE SCOPE OR AMOUNT OF WORK TO BE DONE. I’M SORRY THAT THE MEMBER FEELS THAT WE ARE OUT OF LINE ON OUR PRICING, BUT IT IS IMPORTANT WHEN COMPARING BIDS TO BE SURE THAT THEY ARE FOR THE SAME SCOPE OF WORK. IT IS ALSO DIFFICULT IN MANY CASES FOR A COMPANY TO ESTIMATE ACCURATELY OVER THE PHONE WITHOUT ACTUALLY SEEING THE WORK TO BE DONE.

Quote was high, so I used them for what I considered complex. For the simpler jobs I used a solo handyman & spent $174. House Doctors bid $572 for that same work!He fixed the closet & removed the cabinet within 90 minutes ($290 or $193/hr). He spent a few hours installing the hardware & hanging the door before he realized it was too wide (I asked Dan when he was giving the estimate & he assured me it would fit). They asked for $250 more to finish the job. I was fine to pay this but asked that he adjust the cost of the other jobs accordingly since they were much simpler than planned. The response to this reasonable request was unbelievably hostile. He ultimately gave me a relatively insignificant $50 coupon. Despite the high cost, the door fits poorly and will need additional work. Beware: For us, they bid fixed price but all the risk was on us. Really it was just a minimum & we had to pay for any overrun but didn't get credit for under run. For the total job I paid $75/hr.

THIS MEMBER PURCHASED A WOOD DOOR SLAB TO REPLACE A METAL CLAD FRONT DOOR SLAB. THE EXISTING 36IN METAL CLAD DOOR WAS SLIGHTLY NARROWER THAN THE 36IN WOOD DOOR. WE VERIFIED THAT THE WOOD DOOR SLAB WAS IN FACT A 36IN DOOR BEFORE WE STARTED THE JOB. WHEN IT CAME TO FITTING INTO THE DOOR FRAME IT HAD TO BE TRIMMED DOWN. IF WE HAD MEASURED AND PURCHASED THE DOOR SLAB WE WOULD HAVE TAKEN FULL RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE DOOR SLAB FITTING BECAUSE WE WOULD HAVE DONE THE MEASURING AND PURCHASING OF THE DOOR. IF YOU WANT TO MINIMIZE YOUR RISK, LET THE CONTRACTOR TAKE FULL RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY ISSUES BY LETTING THEM MEASURE AND PURCHASE THE MATERIALS. WHEN WE QUOTE BY THE JOB, THERE IS REALLY NO CONSIDERATION FOR AN HOURLY RATE. THERE ARE ALSO OTHER FACTORS THAT THIS MEMBER IS NOT TAKING INTO CONSIDERATION. THE CABINETS REMOVED FROM THE GARAGE HAD TO BE DISPOSED OF. THERE WAS TIME IN GETTING THAT TRASH TO OUR DUMPSTER. YOU CANNOT JUST CONSIDER TIME SPENT AT YOUR HOUSE WHEN TRYING TO DETERMINE THE TIME INVESTED IN A JOB. THE CRAFTSMAN HAS TO GET MATERIALS AND DISPOSE OF ANY TRASH WHICH TAKES TIME. IF THERE ARE STILL ISSUES WITH THE FRONT DOOR, WE ARE MORE THAN HAPPY TO ADDRESS THEM. THE MEMBER DID NOT MENTION THAT THERE WERE ANY ISSUES WITH THE WORK WHEN THE WORK WAS COMPLETED, AND THEY SETTLED WITH US. NOTHING HAS BEEN SAID UP UNTIL THIS FEEDBACK. ALL THEY HAVE TO DO IS CALL US AND LET US KNOW THERE ARE ISSUES WITH OUR WORK, AND WE WILL BE RIGHT OUT TO TAKE CARE OF THEM.

Although the contracted items were ultimately completed to our satisfaction, this was neither an easy nor a pleasant experience. During the course of the project, windows were broken, wrong colored tiles were installed, and siding was installed improperly. When we pointed these issues out to the foreman on the job, he indicated he could do no better. We contacted Dan Landon about the problems and he personally addressed and completed the work.
