House Doctors Hanydman Service provides a good service. The work took longer than they thought it would to complete. They were very thorough and professional and I would use them again.
Description of Work: House Doctors Handyman Service replaced rotten wood posts on my deck, they repaired drywall, and they did other smaller jobs for me.

When Mr. Nutley returned on Monday, March 9, the homeowner pointed out that the framing would not create plumb walls. Mr. Nutley noted that the roof joists were not plumb. The furring strips, he said, did not look plumb because he had nailed them to the joists. The homeowner, an experienced carpenter, pointed out that Mr. Nutley's later drywall could fulfill the conditions of the contract only if he were either to shave or to shim the furring strips. Mr. Nutley agreed that what the homeowner was suggesting was true, and acknowledged that it would mean going back and shaving the furring strips to make them plumb. The homeowner replied, "That's what we expect." Mr. Nutley did not subsequently correct the framing. The resultant wells were off by more than 1" in some places. Prior to his painting them, on March 10 the homeowner's wife once again pointed out to Mr. Nutley that the walls were not plumb. Instead of a person not being "able to tell that these skylight wells were added," the wells instead gave the strange appearance of parallelograms above the rectangles of the room's other windows. Mr. Landon was then called to the scene before the job was completed. The homeowners complained that the work was not well done, nor was the quality that which was agreed upon in the contract. Mr. Landon replied that it was "good enough for dry wall work" and " wait until it's painted to see how it looks." After it was painted, it looked no better. The homeowners asked Mr. Landon to return to see the finished job. The morning of March 17 the homeowner's son measured the length, width, and plumbness of every surface. He found them to be demonstrably off and in clear violation of the contract. He also discovered that the paint and drywall mud had already begun cracking in several places in both wells. Later in the morning, Mr. Landon arrived and was apprised of this. Mr. Landon inspected the wells and said he found nothing wrong with them. In fact, he told the homeowner, a senior citizen with arthritis who has difficulty climbing ladders, that he didn't even see anything wrong with the paint or drywall mud from on top of the ladder. Only when the homeowner's son once again climbed the ladder and pointed out several spots did Mr. Landon agree to fix the drywall mud and painting. Yet despite the fact that the well walls were at an angle and of different dimensions, Mr. Landon asserted that what he saw constituted the acceptable construction of new skylights in a new house. When the homeowner once again noted that Mr. Nutley could have corrected this problem earlier in his work, Mr. Landon replied, "That's not what we agreed on." He then replied that fixing Mr. Nutley's errors to fulfill the contract drawn up by House Doctors would constitute "working for free" and threatened to put a Lien on the house. The homeowner now must hire someone else to re-construct the skylight wells correctly.
Description of Work: A company recommended by Angie's List, Bone-Dry Roofing, installed a new roof on our house on March 3, 2009. While installing the roof, they installed two skylights in the roof above the cathedral ceiling over the family room. They did a superb job. To complete the separate job of finishing the interior skylight wells, we once again consulted Angie's List and chose House Doctors. The owner, Dan Landon, wrote up a contract detailing the tasks he would perform and the finished quality. It reads, in part: JOB DESCRIPTION: 1) Finish Skylight Wells: -Line Skylight Well with Drywall (2 Each) Line the skylight well with drywall. The roofers will install the skylights and we will open the ceiling, frame and drywall the skylight well. -Frame Between Rafters (2 Each) Frame between the rafters. We are assuming that the roofer will not frame across the rafters and we will add framing to support the drywall. -Prime & Paint Skylight Well (2 Each) We will take a piece of the cut out drywall from the ceiling and get matching ceiling paint. We cannot guarantee that the new paint will match exactly. -Dry Wall Corner - Inside or Outside (2 Each) The drywall will corners [sic] will be finished off at the existing ceiling and inside the wells. The drywall work will be such that you won't be able to tell that these skylight wells were added. -Gallon Interior Paint (1 Each) We will try to get a matching paint so the ceiling paint will match as best as we can. We cannot guarantee a perfect color match. -Setup/Cleanup/Materials Pickup Small Job (1 Each) We agreed to pay $1004.00 for this work. On March 1 the homeowner's wife mailed a check to them for $101.00 as a 10% deposit. Steve Nutley, craftsman, began work on the left skylight well on Friday, March 6, leaving a partly completed job over the weekend. Seeing Mr. Nutley's initial work, all three adult family members voiced concern that the 2x2 furring strips were not shaved to be plumb, and therefore the finished walls would not be plumb (or "perfectly upright"). Because the contract with House Doctors specified, "the drywall work will be such that you won't be able to tell that these skylight wells were added," oddly angled walls would be a major problem. (Mr. Nutley asked for and was paid an additional $59 that day.)

We completed the job according the scope specified in our contract which the member approved. We were contracted to install two skylight wells after skylights had been installed by a roofer. The skylights were installed between existing trusses and the ceiling already existed. The roofer installed one skylight in an area where there was electrical wiring that had to be dealt with. We had to make an additional trip once the wiring issue was resolved. We did not charge for this additional trip. We installed the drywall and prepared it for painting. The existing ceiling paint was matched and we painted the repaired areas of the ceiling and the skylights. The repaired areas could not be distinguished from the original drywall and the ceiling paint matched perfectly. This member is now saying that the drywall is not plumb. Drywall is only as good as the underlying framing it is installed on. All of the framing was in place and we installed strips as necessary so the skylight would be evenly spaced in the skylight well. The member expected us to taper our strips and otherwise fix the issues with the underlying framing. If there are issues with the trueness of the framing, perhaps the member should be talking with the builder who installed the framing. There are many issues in this situation with plumb and level that are beyond our control - i.e. the ceiling is not level. This member wants us to re-work one wall of the skylight well to be perfectly plumb at no cost to them. Our work is industry standard and their request is not within the scope of our original contract. We will not refund any money and we expect to be paid for the work already completed. We will rework the skylight well with an approved and funded change order for the additional scope. - Dan Landon, President

Don was very polite, professional and on time. He seemed very knowledgeable and I felt comfortable with the kind of work I could expect from the company. However, his quote came back three to four times more expensive ($1600 vs $400 & $500) than two other Angie's List companies I received quotes from. For that reason I did not choose to go with House Doctors.

THERE ARE MANY REASONS FOR THIS KIND OF PRICE DISPARITY. THE MOST COMMON ARE THE SCOPE OF WORK AND THE QUALITY OF THE WORK. BE SURE WHEN COMPARING ESTIMATES THAT YOU VERIFY THAT THE SCOPE IS THE SAME. THE CONTRACTOR’S REPUTATION CAN HELP YOU UNDERSTAND THE QUALITY THEY PROVIDE. BASED ON THE MEMBER’S COMMENTS, WE ALSO SUSPECT THAT THE MATERIALS ARE NOT BEING SUPPLIED BY THE CONTRACTOR. THE PRICE OF MATERIALS IN THIS CASE SHOULD ALSO BE INCLUDED TO GET THE REAL COST OF THE PROJECT. THIS PROJECT WAS FOR A BATH EXHAUST FAN WHERE THERE WASN’T ONE AND INCLUDED A LOT OF DRYWALL/PLASTER REPAIRS AFTER THE FAN WAS INSTALLED. A CONTRACTOR IS OBLIGATED TO VENT THE FAN PROPERLY AND MEET THE BUILDING CODES. A REPUTABLE CONTRACTOR WILL KNOW THE CODE AND INSURE THAT ANY WORK MEETS THE BUILDING CODES. THE MEMBER MIGHT NOT KNOW THE CODE AND WOULD NOT KNOW IF THE CONTRACTOR INSTALLED THE FAN PROPERLY UNTIL THE HOUSE WAS INSPECTED – WHICH IS COMMON NOW ON A SALE. THE DEFICIENCY WOULD THEN HAVE TO BE CORRECTED AT ADDITIONAL COST. IT IS BEST TO INSURE THAT THE PROJECT IS DONE PROPERLY THE FIRST TIME SO IT DOES NOT HAVE TO BE DONE AGAIN.

They did very excellent work for us. It was well worth the price. They were very responsive and thorough. This was a messy job and they were very good about the clean up, too. After they finished the job we got a thank you note in the mail. The note had a discount because we found them on Angie's List and it was more than enough to pay for our subscription. We'll use them again if we need to.

We did not have work done by this contractor. I felt the estimate provided for the services was significantly higher than it should have been. We have had a few individual specialized contractors come out and do various projects around our home. In fact we had the original certified electricians that had helped to build our home come out and install 6 recessed lights plus a switch in our morning room. They charged $75 per light and $50 for the extra switch. It was a more difficult job since there was a finished sitting room above the morning room and they could not tear down the drywalled ceiling. I asked House Doctors for an estimate to place a total of 6 recessed lights in our bedroom and adjacent sitting room with two switches. This area unlike the lower level has an unfinished attic above for easy access. The job is actually simpler to do then the one done by the original electricians. The estimate I got was for over $1500 for what I estimate to be 6-7 hours of work. This was over 300% higher and more than what many medical doctors make per hour. I actually emailed them to ask why the estimate was so high, informing them of my previous experience with a certified electrician and the rate I was charged. That was about 6 weeks ago. No one from House doctors has replied to date to my email. I didn't loose anything, but time in this situation. But I am surprised to see this company ranked as high as it is on Angie's List. I am afraid that if my experience is the norm then a lot of people are paying way too much for this type of service.

WE PROVIDED THIS MEMBER AN ESTIMATE BASED ON OUR BEST JUDGMENT OF THE SCOPE OF WORK. OUR ESTIMATES ARE USUALLY QUITE ACCURATE IF WE UNDERSTAND THE SCOPE OF WORK. IT’S POSSIBLE WE MISUNDERSTOOD THE SCOPE. IF THAT IS THE CASE, WE APOLOGIZE FOR ANY INCONVENIENCE. WE DO NOT OVERPRICE AS THIS MEMBER IS SUGGESTING. PART OF THE ISSUE APPEARS TO BE THE EXPECTATION OF THE MEMBER ON WHAT THE JOB TAKES TO ACCOMPLISH. OUR EXPERIENCE IN THESE SITUATIONS IS THAT THERE ARE VALID REASONS FOR THE DISPARITY IN ESTIMATES. FOR EXAMPLE, THE SCOPE OF WORK CAN BE DIFFERENT, THE QUALITY OF WORK IS DIFFERENT, AND/OR COMPETING ESTIMATES DO NOT INCLUDE MATERIALS. WE APOLOGIZE FOR NOT RESPONDING TO YOUR EMAIL. WE THOUGHT YOU WERE ONLY EXPLAINING YOU REASONING FOR NOT ACCEPTING OUR PROPOSAL. WE DID NOT UNDERSTAND THAT YOU NEEDED A RESPONSE.

The insurance company thought that the charge was reasonable. It took just a day or two to do the job. They were pretty fast. Because they had to co-ordinate with the roofer, it did take about a month for them to get to us to do the job, but that was not their fault. They did an OK job, but one complaint that I have against them is that I asked them to come back as the the ceiling beams did not totally match. They never did get back to me on that. They also seemed very concerned in the beginning that I was maybe too far away from them to come to look at the job. They almost wanted me to guarantee that I would give them the job before they came out. Subsequently, they did not want to come back to look at the job after it was finished because of the distance. The distance was about 30 miles.
Description of Work: They fixed the interior of the house (it was wood ceiling beams that were warped from a leaking roof) and they needed to be replaced. I don't remember what the charge. I feel that the price was a reasonable one, though.

WE WERE ASKED BY THIS MEMBER TO PLACE A CALL TO THE INSURANCE COMPANY ABOUT RE-PAINTING THE COMPLETE CEILING THAT IS QUITE LARGE BECAUSE WE ONLY PAINTED THE REPAIRED AREA. WE HAVE YET TO HEAR FROM THE INSURANCE ADJUSTER. WE WERE WAITING ON THE ADJUSTER TO GET BACK TO US SO WE COULD ADDRESS THAT SITUATION AT THE SAME TIME AS THE OTHER CONCERN. SINCE WE HAVE NOT HEARD FROM THE INSURANCE COMPANY, WE WILL GO AHEAD AND ADDRESS THE MEMBER’S CONCERN. WE DID NOT ASK THE MEMBER TO GUARANTEE US THE JOB BEFORE WE CAME OUT. WE ONLY ASKED THAT WE BE GIVEN A FAIR CHANCE TO GET THE WORK. INSURANCE COMPANIES ARE NOTORIOUS FOR ASKING CONTRACTORS TO PROVIDE MULTIPLE FREE ESTIMATES SO THEY DON’T HAVE TO SEND OUT AN ADJUSTER. WE WANT TO CONTINUE TO PROVIDE FREE ESTIMATES, BUT IT ONLY MAKES GOOD BUSINESS SENSE TO SPEND OUR TIME ON ESTIMATES THAT WE CAN EXPECT TO BE FRUITFUL.

It was no problem, they came back and installed it as soon as possible. All three were very professional and on time. It was a pleasure to have them doing the work.

This happened about 4 PM on Thursday so I made several calls from Angies list of recommended handymen. Dan returned my call very promptly and agreed to send someone out already Friday which we thought was VERY responsive. They (2 men) arrived as scheduled on Friday about noon, left to pick up the lumber they needed and put everything up and in working order by 2 PM. We were very pleased with the promptness and the quality of work. We did not miss one day of mail service! But since I was the person that called House Doctors, I got a lot of grief because of the price they charged! As I said, the promptness and quality of work were very good but the price was exorbitant for 2 hours work (and the price did not include new mailboxes). They won't be hearing from any of my neighbors again, I know that for sure.
Description of Work: They replaced the large square posts and the horizontal members that supported 4 mailboxes in front of our house that serve our house plus the 3 houses on the short road behind us. The original posts had rotted out and the whole thing was laying down on the lawn.

WE DID THIS WORK FOR YOU ON A TIME AND MATERIALS BASIS. THIS IS WHERE YOU PAY FOR EVERY MAN HOUR USED TO ACCOMPLISH THE WORK BASED ON HOW LONG IT TAKES. WE WOULD HAVE BEEN HAPPY TO GIVE YOU AN ESTIMATE FOR THE WORK FIRST, BUT IN ORDER TO DO THAT WE WOULD HAVE NEEDED TO SEE THE JOB FIRST. YOU DID NOT HAVE THE TIME TO SCHEDULE AN ESTIMATE. BECAUSE OF THE STRUCTURE INVOLVED TO SUPPORT THE FOUR MAIL BOXES, THERE WERE TWO CRAFTSMEN ON THE JOB FOR TWO HOURS. THIS IS A TOTAL OF FOUR MAN HOURS OF WORK. YOU PAID FOR FOUR MAN HOURS PLUS THE MATERIALS REQUIRED FOR THE JOB. THE TIME AND MATERIALS CHARGE WAS EXPLAINED TO YOU UP FRONT. YOU JUST ASSUMED THAT THE MINIMUM CHARGE WAS A FIXED ESTIMATE, WHICH IT WAS NOT.

The wood on my back door was exposed with some minor damage from dog scratches. When Dan came over to give me an estimate, we discovered some additional wood rot and loose caulking. Dan was to have Fritz fix the wood door frame, replace the weather stripping, recaulk the entire door assembly, repaint the entire door frame, and attach a jamb shield so dogs could not scratch up the jamb again. The only thing that remained to do was to tighten down the jamb shield once the paint dried. Also, when Dan came to give me an estimate, I received a copy of all of his pertinent paperwork (insurance, workers comp, etc) to give me piece of mind for the quality of work they do.

I received a $519.00 written quote from Mr. Larson to replace six (6) asphalt shingles on the low pitched roof of my single story detached garage, damaged by the recent wind storm. The base bid included labor, materials, and disposal of the debris. Should the job warrant replacement of any shingles over an above the initial six covered by the base bid, there would have been an additional cost of $45.00 each. Needless to say, I was stunned by the amount of the bid. In the end, I, a rather handy 58 year old female, did the job myself in less than 2-1/2 hours at a cost of $24.00. The small amount of debris fit in a kitchen-sized garbage bag, and was hauled away with the rest of my trash earlier this week. In doing the job, it was necessary to replace three (3) more shingles than expected. At the price Mr. Larson wanted to charge, it would have cost over $650.00, or $261.60 an hour. I have no problem with someone making a profit, but the House Doctors quote was absolutely ridiculous.

They did really basic things in our home we moved in that was kind of older, just to get us ready to get moved in. They switched the wiring in our dining room and only one of the switches work now. With the plumbing, they somehow put the faucet on backwards. We had to have them come back and redo that. I thought they were very expensive and we didn't appreciate the work.
Description of Work: They did some electrical work and plumbing on my home.

THIS WORK WAS COMPLETED IN JANUARY OF 2006 AND YOU ARE JUST NOW GIVING FEEDBACK? THAT WAS ALMOST THREE YEARS AGO! WE CALLED THE MEMBER TO SEE IF THERE WAS ANYTHING WE NEEDED TO ADDRESS AND SHE DECLINED, EVEN THOUGH WE WERE WILLING AND ABLE TO ADDRESS ANY ISSUES.

This is a company that I highly recommend for services. Very thorough, punctual and the quality was what I was hoping for. I even called back because the caulking was not adhering properly and both the service technician and myself were able to work out the details to get it fixed the right way!! No questions asked!!
Description of Work: I had a few things around the house that I could not get to or did not want to get to!! Ceiling fan was unbalanced and making a lot of noise, caulking the master bathroom shower, installing some hardware in garage to assist with pool supplies.
