Everything went well, he got the job done and passed the inspection. The porches look Great!
Description of Work: Bill and his crew did a porch on a duplex for me, They came out and gave me a resonable estimate on a big job. Bill was honest and very helpful with all of my concerns and got the job done as fast as he could. They crew was on time everyday and were professional and clean.

Great experience! This was my first house after living in the city for 20 years. Wasn't sure what to do or ask. I got several quotes and Bill was my first. His quote wasn't the lowest, but the quality of the work and the extras he did on the deck more than made up for the small difference in price. Everything was on time and the work schedule was well communicated. We've gotten compliments on the deck already. As this is a newer subdivision many people put in their decks when the house was being built and cut corners to save cash. I'm glad I waited and did it right. We are looking to do the basement next and I will definately use Bill again.

We are very happy with Bills work and will continue to use his services around the house. We are planning a front porch in the spring and will hire him to do that. Excellent person to deal with all the way around.
Description of Work: This is the second job Bill has done for us. He replaced all of the baseboard in our living, dining and hallway (we painted, he cut and placed it). He also did woodwork around a door and window.

Bill and his crew of two got to the job about 8 a.m. They first dug the post holes and set six of them. They had the wood delivered the day before so they just started they construction of the stairs and replacing the railing. They finished in one day. That evening I received an email from Bill asking how we liked the job.
Description of Work: I called Bill and he responded with a date to make an estimate on replacing the railing as well and putting in new stairs with a landing. The deck is about 9 feet off the ground so instead of building steps straight to the ground he built about six steps to a landing and then turned the steps 90 degrees and built the rest of the steps to the ground level. His workmanship was outstanding.

Everything went very smoothly!! It took the crew 2 days to build the deck and bill came out both days to check on the progress and move an exterior outlet above the new deck. Most of the time we were not home but the work progressed without any problems, they cleaned up and shut the gate and were very professional. I am extremely happy with the way the deck looks and the way it was built! i know we will enjoy this for years to come. We have had tons of compliments on the deck and it adds so much to the appearance of our back yard. I meant to write this months ago, sorry Bill. I work with contractors every day and know how badly a job can go. Hire this company, you will not be sorry!
Description of Work: We asked for a quote on a deck attached to the back of our house. Bill came out personally and discussed what we wanted and took measurements. He answered all of our questions about how he would build the deck, materials, time frames etc.. We also looked at some of the decks he had built on his website which gave us an idea about a railing detail that we used on our deck at no extra charge. He got back to us within a few days with a detailed quote and diagram for the deck. We made some changes, increasing the size and adding built in benches. We agreed on a price and Bill gave us a start date.

I decided to contract a small deck with Highman construction after getting bids from 3 other companies. I was impressed with the fact that Bill priced out the deck estimate on a per piece cost basis and not just a typical square footage total price as the other contractors used. This kept the price more within my liking. During construction Bill not only explained what was happening, he used his vast experience to make decisions that greatly enhanced the quality and the esthetics of the deck. Several time he pointed out changes that would benefit me with the end product. The construction was smooth and timely. My wife and I are extremely pleased and our neighbors are quite impressed. I?ve spent 35 years in the engineering/construction field so I know quality work. Bill Highman was a pleasure to work with and I highly recommend him and his crew for any of the contracting work that they perform.
Description of Work: Had wanted a 16'x10' deck constructed over an existing 14'x10' slab. Contacted 4 contractors. Chose the one I felt most comfortable with.

We initially got an estimate from Bill last year and were completely impressed. When we decided to follow-through this year, we were pretty certain we would go with him. Hands down, he is the best contractor we have worked with over the course of owning 4 homes. His attention to detail stands out as does his promptness and reliability. He described all the options re materials and design, explainning the pros & cons of each; there was never any pressure to go with one thing or another. He was very patient and responsive to all questions from start to finish. He is a very focused and hard worker, clearly taking pride in his work. He was there when he said he would be, worked non-stop to get the job done that day, and cleaned up so thorughly that you never would have known he was there--except we now have a great set of front steps that truly captures the "look" we were going for. Without question, we would hire him again!
Description of Work: Bill designed and built 7 ft wide front porch steps and replaced and stabilzed to posts on our deck which had been incorrectly (and unsafely) installed by the home builder.

The job went very well. I requested some time between the tear off of the old decking to regrade the area under the deck. Bill was very accommodating and waited until I was ready for him to finish the job. He advised prior to the start of the job that you never know what you are going to find when you remove the decking. We found support joist that didn't comply with current standards. He removed and re-installed several joists and also added some, at a minimal cost. We also found water damaged rotted wood under the patio doors. He removed and replaced the damaged wood and took steps to stop further water damage. He could have taken advantage of the unexpected problems that he encountered. He did just the opposite by only charging for the additional material and labor. We found him to be very fair and extremely easy to work with. We did a lot of communication by e-mail and he was always quick to reply.
Description of Work: The decking, rails and steps were removed from a 24' x 24' deck. The support joists were re-positioned and additional joists and supports were added. Water damage and rotted wood was discovered on the face plate of the house under the patio doors. The damaged wood was removed and replaced. New treated lumber decking, railings and steps were installed. Skirting was installed after the deck was finished at Bill's recommendation which was done for the price of the lumber only.

Bill responded quickly to my request for an estimate and was out within a few days to review the project and provide an estimate. The workmanship was excellent, including beautiful drywall finishing and craftsmanship in the finish carpentry. He has a crew of experienced carpenters who have been with him for several years. Bill is an excellent communicator and was a pleasure to work with. He went out of his way to offer suggestions and was very receptive to any ideas that we had. We are extremely pleased with the finished produce.
Description of Work: We had 550 square feet of basement finished with drywall and drywall ceilings, 16 canister lights, a 2' x 13' closet with shelves and bi-fold doors and a seven foot bar. We did the painting and flooring ourselves.

Bill Highman was a pleasure to work with. He responded promptly to my request to come and discuss the job, and he discussed a variety of materials and options. He presented more options than other contractors I talked to about this work. He answered e-mail messages promptly while I was making decisions about details of the job, and deciding on a contractor. The price quoted was the lowest of the three contractors I talked to. The installation date was scheduled within a few days after agreeing to have Higham Construction do the job. He and his crew came on the day and at the time specified, worked efficiently and showed great attention to the details of getting the job done right. Bill and his crew members were very courteous and considerate when dealing with my wife and me during the construction process. I couldn't be more pleased with the result. The deck looks great and shows that a great deal of careful craftsmanship went into the job.
Description of Work: Services involved replacement of the floor and railing caps of my deck which has an area of 500 square feet. Two sets of stairs were also completely re-built. The material used was a no-maintenance, vinyl coated composite material that provided a very good color match.

Bill Higham was quick to visit our home, provided a quote when he promised and once we entered into a contract he was extremely punctual with communication and work performed. We did have some quality issues due to some mistakes by one of his young carpenters but Bill stood behind the work and made it right before he left the project.

The whole experience was very smooth. Bill Higham arrived promptly to all of our appointments, he responded quickly to e-mails and phone calls, and the project started and ended on schedule. The whole process, from digging the first hole to cleaning up the site, took 2 work weeks. This included 2 days away for the Thanksgiving holiday plus 1+ days lost due to rain. Bill has great energy and enthusiasm, listening to our ideas and providing his own. We also felt his pricing was very competitive. All of those things lead to us selecting him for the job. The deck was finished just as the weather turned cold, so we haven't found out yet if there were any "bugs" in the final product. If there are, we're confident that Bill will make it right. Our only complaints are very minor: There was one design detail where I wish Bill had consulted with us / made the decision more clear to us prior to going forward, and I wish they had offered to put our grill / deck furniture back in place after construction was complete -- it was fairly heavy and difficult for my wife and I to move back into place (particularly in the snow). As I said, the complaints are minor. Based on our experience, I would recommend Higham construction without hesitation for this type of project.

In 2009 we noticed boards separating at the skirt, two of the posts going crooked and a couple of deck plank edges bending upwards. Bill was called and he inspected the deck to see what needed to be done. He told us he needed new WeatherBest material to do the necessary repairs and that the WeatherBest material used on our deck is no longer available. Apparently he has been unable to locate any suitable material and he has been silent for almost a year with no response to my letter or phone calls seeking his warranty service or his advice. Our deck is usable but it looks bad and it will need to be repaired or replaced before our house is ever listed for sale. Bill seems to have abandoned us.
Description of Work: Bill Higham built a deck for our new house in 2004 using WeatherBest composite decking, railing, and skirting. Workmanship was warranted for 7 years and the structure was warranted for 15 years. We were pleased with the installation and posted a very positive Angie's List report in 2004.

Contacted HIgham Construction and two other contractors for deck estimates. One contractor never returned my call. I set up appoointments with Bill Higham and a second contractor. I met with both Bill Higham and the second contractor in separate appointments, explaining to both that I needed quotes by the end of the week. The second contractor missed that deadline by over two weeks, and also told me that a permit was not needed (a violation of Cleveland City Ordinances). Bill met with me in the early evening (after a busy day at work), took measurements and discussed both basic construction and design of the deck, provided a ballpark estimate on the spot, followed up immediately with full details and a preliminary contract via email, and promptly fine-tuned the contract. He listened to my input, answered my questions thoroughly, and enthusiastically entered into discussion of the design. Bill was able to work around another construction project (new garage). Bill and his assistant, Chad, started the deck project on a Friday and completed it the next day (Saturday). Bill was pleased that I was able to be on site during the construction process to address a couple of problems that came up because of the way the poured concrete pad was sloped, and because of some special design elements. He and Chad did not seem to mind my questions and picture-taking while they were working. Bill was able to do slight modifications to accommodate the sloping concrete, the old concrete porch that was left in place under the new deck, and concerns about drainage of rainwater and snowmelt. He even returned some material to his supplier and deducted the price from my final payment. I had encountered some problems with the garage project done earlier that month by another contractor, so it was a real joy to work with Bill on a problem-free project! He was kind, courteous, polite, and professional throughout the process. Above all, he listened respectfully and gave thoughtful, knowledgeable answers. Some contractors have a tendency to "talk down" to female homeowners, but Bill certainly had no hang-ups working for a woman, and respected the fact that I had thoroughly researched the project in advance.
Description of Work: Installed a 12x12 Trex deck over an older, smaller concrete porch on a newly-poured concrete pad, completed with vinyl rails, skirting, and a door to access area under the deck.

Higham helped us envision a solution to our awful entryway / laundry room which was essentially a tiny area with a small coat closet with an adjoining wall / door into a small laundry room. Upon deconstruction of the entire area a new large space was realized. It took longer than we anticipated but the reward was amazing. We now have a large area for all 6 of our family members to house coats, shoes, backpacks, gloves, hats, snowsuits - plus it flows beautifully into our laundry room so the entry mess is well contained. We also gained storage area at the top of the lockers which was a big help. It's also an attractive design so we receive many positive compliments on our mudroom.
Description of Work: Higham Construction renovated / built us a mudroom. They deconstructed the present entry / laundry room and constructed a larger entry / mudroom / laundry. They installed a new doorway, french door and built us custom mudroom lockers. They performed some basic drywall work and installed tile in the new area. We absolutely love the difference the mudroom has made for our family. Much of the cost was for new materials including tile, paint, etc.

Bill is someone who is easy to work with, diligent, punctual and pays close attention to detail. His quality of work is excellent and we feel confident that his workers will carry out the same workplace values. We are thrilled with the basement and feel that we got an excellent product for the budget. In any project there are concerns and issues, but when faced with those we always felt that Bill corrected the situation and was as concerned with the look and quality as we were. Any issues that came up were addressed and rectified. Not only would we recommend Higham Construction for basement work, we will continue to utilize his services for othe renovation projects we encounter. We have referred him to friends and neighbors who have had the same level of satisfaction.
Description of Work: Bill Higham worked with us to finish our basement. He gave us the most reasonable pricing while still being realistic and offering high quality workmanship. He helped with the initial floorplan / layout; did all of the framing; installed ceiling insulation in the entire basement; hung drywall; re-plumbed the bathroom for drainage; framed out the bar and fireplace areas; and provided finished electrical. We will be pursuing the finish trim and door work, fireplace and bar construction with Higham Construction as well.

I had decided to replace the broken concrete patio with a new deck. I got bids from about half a dozen different companies ranging from landscapers to construction companies. Bill was able to build me a maintenance free deck using Azek PVC decking for what all the other contractors were going to charge me for wood so it became a pretty easy decision. I also had them tear down an old privacy fence and build a new one. Bill had someone else do the concrete removal which was fine since that required some specialized equipment. He stopped by after that was done to verify that everything was good to go for the next steps. After that it took them a little over a week to get everything done including mandatory stops for city inspections of the post holes and framing. Bill was great to work with right from the beginning, offering advice when asked and suggestions when they made sense. He and his fellow carpenter Chad arrived when they said they would and always kept me fully informed as to next steps. In general I felt that they had my best interests in mind and were not always looking to get this job wrapped up as quickly as possible so they could move on. They took the time to make sure that things were done correctly and even put in some extra framing along the one side just to make doubly sure that there wouldn't be any movement of the deck surface. All in all I 'm very pleased with the work they did and would recommend them.

We contacted Bill Higham of Higham Construction after reviewing his history on Angie's List. When we called he answered the phone and agreed to visit our home to provide an estimate. Mr. Higham spent a good hour on a Saturday morning looking at and consulting with us about our deck and, particularly, the kitchen floor issue on our very modest 90 year old Lakewood home. He indicated that he could not provide an estimate about the kitchen floor until he had an opportunity to have a closer look at it after the old deck's removal. The following Monday Mr. Higham sent us an email, which included his proposal and a graphic illustration of the proposed deck. He suggested we execute this process through a series of contracts. The first contract covered the old deck's removal and haul away. The second contract would include the kitchen floor issue. The third contract would specifically apply to building a new deck. We appreciated his honesty and concern about the kitchen floor issue and his price point was more competitive than that of other bidders. Once the initial contract was signed, Mr. Higham scheduled a time to remove the old deck. Once the old deck was removed and the debris placed into his truck, he and his colleague examined the kitchen floor area. He carefully conferred with us about our expectations regarding the problem and then provided a rough estimate to address the issue based upon some assumptions. He indicated that he would need flexibility to execute this repair because he would need to open the floor up to examine the situation further. There remained some uncertainty about conditions. We agreed. Mr. Higham scheduled a time to return to our home and did so. He and another of this colleagues began to remove portions of the old wood and siding from the house. He addressed the issue with the floor in a relatively inexpensive manner. He indicated he would bill us for the time of his colleague and any of the few materials used in the repair. We then signed a contract to build a new deck. Over the course of a week Mr. Higham progressed on completing the deck. First, he secured the proper permits. Next, he stopped by our house and drilled the appropriate post holes. Third, he stopped by the house to pour concrete into the post holes. Finally, in two consecutive days he constructed the deck. It took two days to construct the deck because one of his colleagues was ill. Once contracts were signed, the entire process took about one month. Bill Higham was professional and communicated with us in clear and concise terms both through email and by telephone. We appreciated his bidding process, which included the graphic illustration of the proposed deck. He was honest about what could and could not be accomplished, specifically regarding the kitchen floor. Mutual trust was involved because of the nature of this problem and Mr. Higham was worthy of that trust. When a minor problem arose regarding the proposal and the city's requirements, he contacted us immediately and we addressed this issue. We highly recommend Higham Construction. We would hire the firm again.
Description of Work: Higham Construction removed an old, estimated age 25 years old, wooden deck, addressed an issue with the kitchen floor (the deck was off the kitchen), and built a new wooden deck.
