I would not bother calling this company again.
Description of Work: I attempted to get a quote for chimney flashing. Incredibly, when I called the office number I was told the person answering the phone was on her way into a meeting and would have to call me back. She did call, when I was away from the phone. I called the office again. This time the person answering the phone indicated that she was driving and would have to call me back. A few days later, I thought, well, perhaps it was a fluke and called a last time. Of course, the lady answering the phone was again driving. I asked if this was the office number which she confirmed. Again she promised to call back. She finally did call back this time, at 8pm. I finally had my chance to describe the problem and ask them to provide a quote. At this point, she informed me that this company charges $20 to provide an estimate. I don't pay for estimates and I don't like this business practice so I did not have them provide an estimate. This was a huge ridiculous waste of my time.

I called the office based on the Angie's List profile, and was told that there is a $20 estimate fee. Though the fee would be deducted from the cost of the project, I still disagree with having to pay a fee for the privilege of POTENTIALLY giving this company my business. I understand that the $20 fee is justified as either "gas expense", "lost productivity", etc.", but in my opinion it's a hook designed to psychologically obligate the customer to do business with this contractor since the customer would be out $20 whether work is done or not. I believe that traveling to the customer's home to see the work that needs to be done and to provide an accurate estimate is part of the cost of doing business. Other customers may be fine with the fee, but I'm not.

The floor installation company was good and their price was better than what the other people gave us. They were punctual and professional. They were a one stop contractor that handled everything from removing the old flooring and putting in the new flooring. We didn't have to deal with different people to do different aspects of the work.

We had a recurring leak which we had attempted to fix with small repairs over the course of nearly a year. We were finally convinced that replacing the section in question was the right thing to do. The two workmen showed up mid morning on Monday and tore the old roof off. This is when they discovered that some replacement of old boards was needed. They were great about showing me precisely what the problem was. They left for a few hours to get supplies and during this time, although it was sunny all morning and there was no prediction of rain, there was a brief but severe rainstorm, resulting in a lot of water coming through the ceiling. The roof had not been covered in a tarp prior to their leaving, probably due to there being no apparent sign of inclement weather. Luckily I was home and so I was able to catch most of it, avoiding serious damage to our floor, furniture or carpeting. It did lead to water damage on the ceiling in a second room where there previously had been none and new water damage on the ceiling which had some preexisting damage. The owner, Don, came over as soon as he could to look at the damage. The workmen finished most of the work that day, but had to return the next morning to finish it all up. When they left for the day they did tarp the roof. The work was completed the next day. They left the jobsite clean and didn't damage any of the landscaping in the process. They also did a few minor repairs at no additional cost (caulking around vent pipes, nails and such). I paid the full cost of the repair the next day, although we had not yet resolved the issue of the rain damage. Over the course of a few weeks, Don and I negotiated for a few weeks over how to address the damage caused in the course of the work and ultimately he sent a check for the estimated cost of painting the two ceilings. I considered this to be fair resolution of the problem. While the experience as a whole does not make me comfortable hiring the company again, I believe the work they did is of high quality. Furthermore, throughout the process Don was open and honest in his communication with me and treated me with respect even though we did not agree about everything. I have every reason to believe that leaving the roof without a tarp was an honest and rare mistake and would not hesitate to recommend Punch Out Plus to others. In my opinion, the measure of a person is not so much how they act when everything goes well, but how they react when things get difficult. Don was admirable.
Description of Work: The one of the four pitches on our roof was replaced. When the old roof was taken off, they found a few boards needed to be replaced as well, which added to the repair costs.

We would like to say “thank you” to member for his kind words and his acknowledgment of Don’s honesty, credibility and commitment to excellent customer service by sending member a check for painting. Small repairs made over the course of nearly a year were made by other Angie’s List Service Providers. Member is correct, it was sunny and there was no prediction of rain. Therefore, the workers made a conscious decision not to tarp the roof. It was not a mistake. In fact, the brief storm was a rare pop up. Member is somewhat misleading; therefore, we would like to provide the entire picture to all members. Don immediately acknowledged the damage we caused and offered to repair damage (which was minor) and paint ceilings using our Super Service Award winning repair and painting technicians. There was absolutely no negotiation whatsoever over how to address the damage caused. Member had already lined up a contractor to repair preexisting damage before we repaired the roof. Member wanted his father-in-law to paint the ceilings when he was in town visiting, expected to arrive “in the next two weeks”, as while visiting “father-in-law normally performed small tasks for nominal fees used as spending money while in town”. Member’s statement “over the course of a few weeks” resulted as the father-in-law ultimately arrived in several weeks, not two. Member’s statement “we did not agree about everything” resulted as it is customary that the company that caused the damage repairs the damage. When the father-in-law arrived, member provided us with three verbal quotes (member felt it was best to obtain quotes from local painting companies) of $400.00, $310.00 and $305.00, with father-in-law’s quote being the highest. Member preferred a simple payment from P.O.P. allowing him to choose the contractor of his choice. A check in the amount of $310.00 was promptly cut and mailed. Considering member believed our work was of high quality and praised Don’s character and professionalism, it seems peculiar that member would recommend P.O.P. to others but would not personally hire us again.

I consulted Don for an estimate to perform the above work. He set an appointment for one week later to provide an estimate. Don arrived on time and called with an estimate in 2 days. The estimate was accepted and the work was scheduled. His employee arrived right on time and completed the work the same day. The results were excellent.

The price charged for the work ? way overpriced ($1070). Then, it is a mess. A storm door was installed incorrectly (the door was $174). He installed an exhaust fan in the bathroom. So not that much money. A few little things like 2 baseboards. The first group messed up the storm door. The second and third time Don (the owner) came out. He could see it wasn?t right and has gotten worse after the corrections. I sent him a letter. He knows this can't be fixed. In the letter he states that I was fine with all the adjustments (which I wasn't). He was ready to leave and forget about the job-he never mentioned the mess-All they did was manipulate the open area of "sweep" at the bottom from one end to the other. There should be no open areas at the bottom of the sweep. I wrote him a letter on July 3, 09 and told him he could order a new sweep at Home Depot, pay for it and pay for Home Depot to install it. He then wrote me a letter stating dated July 26th and said that I seemed to be fine, but he would have someone named Davina get in touch with me and it is now August 5th and no one has!! I think he was just waiting for me to sat something, but I kept quiet. As he is ready to leave and knowing that it is not right.
Description of Work: They were supposed to install a new storm door for me and an exhaust fan in my bathroom. I had a few little bits of 2 inch baseboard I needed glue and a piece in the living room that looks worse now that they have done it.

The storm door and sweep were installed correctly. Storm door is plumb and square. If the door were installed incorrectly, a new sweep would not remedy the problem. Member’s door opens directly onto concrete porch, which does not have the proper fall, and there is no step-down. When Don spoke to member on previous occasions, the member seemed to understand. We have raised and lowered the sweep to no avail. There are only two (2) screws to adjust the sweep, not much to go wrong. When the sweep is lowered and the door is opened all the way the sweep drags on the concrete. When the sweep is raised enough to clear the concrete, there is a gap between the sweep and threshold. Member then called and complained debris and insects were entering her home due to the gap. Dragging on the concrete has damaged the sweep. Member first requested P.O.P. pay for a new sweep and pay Home Depot to install sweep. Davina did call member; member was extremely rude, cursed several times and hung up on Davina. Now member is requesting a $500.00 refund! Clearly, $500.00 for a door sweep is irrational… sounds like extortion to me! This complaint is the first time member alleges door was improperly installed, as well as the baseboard in “the living room that looks worse now that they have done it”. Don must return to address and assess these allegations. Clearly the member is confused, as the work was completed June 2008 and invoiced June 5, 2008, not July 6, 2009 as member alleges. Our work was not overpriced. Clearly member is confused as we performed eight (8) separate tasks, per the verbal request of member May 12, 2008. Member accepted verbal quote May 20, 2008 and signed contract May 24, 2008 detailing scope of work and price quoted. The work was performed correctly, professionally and in a timely manner. The work was not performed by a “group” as member alleges, but by one technician. Member was pleased with the work performed and paid her invoice in two (2) days. Member then contracted us to perform additional work (also completed June 2008). The second round of work was also performed correctly, professionally and in a timely manner. Again, member was pleased with the work we performed and paid her invoice in three (3) days. Member does not want to face Don again, as we believe she’s trying to get a free sweep fifteen (15) months later. P.O.P. has won twenty-one (21) super service awards in seven years, twelve (12) alone in 2008! We do not have an “A” rating by ripping people off. Please read our hundreds of positive reports. Unfortunately, every now and then you run into someone you just can’t please. Clearly, this member is confused.

It did not happen as he did not give me the estimate I paid for.
Description of Work: The owner, Don Bricken, came on Tuesday to do an estimate for the work I had described that was needed over the phone. I told him when he was here that I would be leaving for two weeks and needed the estimate done before I left on Friday. He agreed that this would be no problem. It is now Thursday evening and I have not yet heard from his company, despite having paid the $20.00 fee for the estimate.

Patience is a virtue; be respectful of other’s schedules. Member requested estimate July 1, 2009 via email through our web site (www.punchoutplus.com). One of the tasks member wanted an estimate for was to recaulk shower with mildew resistant caulk. Some jobs there is just no way getting around performing an estimate in order to determine the appropriate cost of a job. Other jobs, like caulking a shower, sometimes it is possible to determine the cost with clear and adequate pictures. Therefore, in an effort to reduce costs to members any way we can, Davina offered we may be able to bypass the estimate if member emailed photos hoping Don may be able to determine the cost based upon the photos, or perhaps provide ballpark cost as a starting point based upon the photos. After viewing the photos, Don thought it would be best if he personally assessed the shower based upon the following: 1. Considerable amount of mold along shower walls and shower base. 2. Member indicated (with emailed photos) caulk had been replaced twice in 2 ½ years due to recurring mold issues despite lengthy monthly cleaning measures. 3. Shower wall tile appeared to be an uncommon tile not normally found in showers. Don assessed shower and electrical issues July 7th. Member pushed Don extremely hard during estimate to replace an electrical outlet on the spot; however, Don’s schedule did not permit it. Member did receive estimate. Don never promises an exact date as to when he will contact member with price. Don does indicate he normally shoots for within two to three days, however, it all depends upon his heavy schedule and unforeseen issues that arise on jobs out of Don’s control that commonly occur in this industry. Don quoted verbal price July 10th (3rd day), which included resealing the grout due to wide grout lines apparent during estimate. Member accepted verbal quote and the work was scheduled for the week of July 20th, allowing adequate dry out of shower prior to commencement of work, provided member returned signed contract prior to commencement of work. As member was going out of town, Don advised member it was unlikely he could submit proposal that evening (July 10th) but would do his best, that realistically it would be Monday July 13th. Member indicated that was not a problem, as she was traveling with her laptop computer and would be able to print, sign and return the contract while she was away. Member provided Don with her condominium manager’s name and phone number to coordinate work schedule while she was gone. Proposal was emailed to member Monday July 13th. We never received signed contract. Don left numerous detailed messages for condominium manager in an effort to schedule the work to no avail. Davina left detailed messages on member’s cell and followed up via email in an effort to obtain signed contract to no avail. Clearly, we did our part.

I spoke with Davina about obtaining an estimate to repair our siding (storm damage). She indicated that she would need to check with Don to see if they could service our area (Johnstown). She was very pleasant and professional. She also got back with me promptly. While she indicated that they could come to our residence to provide us with an estimate, there would be a $50 fee. She stated that it is usually $20, but based on our distance from the city there would be an additional cost. I'm always suspect of any company that charges for an estimate. Of the six companies that I contacted, all from Angie's List, they were the only one with a fee for an estimate. For this reason, I chose not to pursue their services further.

We are a family owned and operated business. The nominal estimate fee helps offset expenses, which in turn allows us to keep our hourly rate lower. In addition, we have found that people who are serious about having the work performed do not mind paying the fee. Member called five other companies and most likely hired the least expensive. Don cannot afford to drive two hours (one hour each way) in addition to walking the potential job with member, tracking down appropriate siding, calculating the estimate and phoning the cost and detailed scope of work in to member. Members, please consider the costs involved in running a legitimate business such as advertising, fuel, truck maintenance, vehicle insurance, general liability insurance, health insurance, affiliation memberships, BWC and City fees associated with licensing and registration.

A few weeks ago, a shingle blew off my roof. The first company I contacted estimated $445 to repair it - they wanted to use a shingle from the porch roof to replace the missing one, then completely re-shingle the porch roof, so that the main roof would all be one color, and the porch roof would all be one color (although the porch and main roof colors might differ slightly.) The second company I contacted said that they had a minimum charge of $250 for any work, and that since all I needed was to have one shingle replaced it really wasn't worth it, since the seal on my roof was still intact. So, I called Punch Out Plus, who said they would replace the shingle and nail down any other shingles that looked like they were coming loose. Several people that I've talked to, including roofer #2, suggested that this was really the kind of repair job that a homeowner could easily do on their own. The thing is, my roof is nearly three stories off the ground, steep, and if you fall off, you'll land on either a concrete sidewalk or a wrought iron fence. I was more than happy to pay a professional to take care of it.
